The Summer is already looking relatively busy for Switch gamers, and now yet another meaty game is joining the fray; NIS America has confirmed that Ys IX: Monstrum Nox arrives on 6th July in North America, 9th July in Europe and 16th July in Oceania.
This latest entry in the series see Adol start out as a fugitive, and this time around the core setting is the rather foreboding city of Balduq. There's the series' usual dose of action and enjoyable boss fights, and as the game has been out on PS4 for a little while you can browse the review over on Push Square for a sense of what to expect.
As for the Switch release, there's a neat new trailer to celebrate the release date announcement.
If you're a big fan and want a cool physical copy, you can find details on the Pact Edition and Limited Edition on this official page, along with various store links.
Are you planning to pick this up in July?

The Ys (pronounced "eece") series is a great series to go to when you want some quick, no-nonsense action without having to think too much. This one is heavy on the dungeon-crawling, and looks as good as the rest of the games.
Sooo... that gives me what, 3 months to clear my backlog of... 150 games approx...
I'll see you there.
Going to be a busy few months of releases for me so I'm not sure when I'll get the chance to play it but I'll likely still get a physical copy at launch as copies of Ys VIII have been pretty scarce a lot of the time.
One of my top three most anticipated Switch releases of 2021, behind SMT V and Monster Hunter Stories 2.
I'm waiting for anti matter's opinion before I consider buying this one!
I've waited this long to play it, may as well wait the bit longer and get the Switch version.
So many great epic RPGs coming to Switch this year and next year. At this rate I had no reason to play the PS5, Final Fantasy VII remake could wait.
You can bet I will grab a physically copy of it!
Same month as Neo The World Ends With You? Ouch. Am still looking forward to this, but it might end up in the backlog for a while if I do pick it up near launch
Ys IX is probably one of my most anticipated releases of the year. I'm almost done with my 100% completion playthrough of Ys VIII so this is a perfect release date! It also releases a couple of days before my birthday so I guess I know what I'll be asking for lol
I'm waiting for this like since forever!
Wow, July was already stacked. This makes it even better.
July I’m going to be busy with Mario golf, monster hunter stories & Zelda skyward. Not sure I can fit it in.
God help me if streets of rage expansion releases or HOTD or TMNT
Wow... another friggin July game?! Please, publishers, stagger releases more! This is nuts. Well, at least I'll have plenty to play this year. My prediction last year that the switch is on a star trek movie cycle appears to be accurate. Odd numbered years are great, even numbered years suck. Hopefully 2022 will break that trend with pokemon arceus, splatoon 3, and triangle strat.
Do you need to play the others to understand this one?
Is there a physical Switch version for this game or is it only digital? I have only seen the PS4 version listed on places like Amazon and Best Buy here in Canada.
I'll pick it up sooner rather than later since copies of Ys VIII became scarce pretty quickly here in NA. I had to buy a UK copy off Amazon. Dang...another game I want in July....My poor wallet. XD
@VoidofLight While I haven't played a Ys game yet (VIII and Origins are backlogged), from what I've been told there's no relation between most of them besides using Adol as the main character. It's perfectly fine to play each entry without previous context.
@TheWingedAvenger Love Ys!!! Got Ys Origins and Ys VIII physically and loved them both! Cannot wait to get YsIX!
Already preordered off Amazon. Can't wait
Oooof the framerate looks rough
@Tyranexx Ah alright! Thanks for the info!
@VoidofLight absolutely not, but mu advice is to play at least YS VIII, because it's really, really good!
I'm definitely interested. I waited on a PS4 copy and now I can't seem to find one. I should probably pre order a Switch copy in case a physical version is hard to find at launch.
Definitely getting this. I've become quite the Ys fan during the pandemic by playing through about 5 Ys games.
I cant wait to buy the game in thw store the ys VIII really was an extremely enjoyable experience for me... I dont expect anything less from tje new part either
@VoidofLight No prob! I'd love to get to Ys VIII before then, but that's looking increasingly unlikely. For some reason I decided to pick up Monster Hunter Rise.
YS VIII was simply phenomenal, in my opinion, so I'm actually pretty nervous about this one... can they really match or surpass VIII? I somehow doubt it, but I will be there day 1 regardless.
@VoidofLight @Tyranexx Ys IX references previous games quite a bit, but not in a way that would require you to have played previous games to enjoy the story.
@Ooyah It's pretty good from what I've played so far. I think it's about even with VIII. There are some bits I prefer in each game.
I will definitely be buying this game as soon as it comes out. At the moment this is my most anticipated JRPG of the year for the Switch. At least until we learn of more awesome JRPGs coming out this year.
@Wargoose Sounds similar to (but not exactly like) how DQ and FF handle each subsequent entry, minus a few nods/references and the main protagonist. That's how I've had it explained to me at least.
Preordered! Been waiting for this.
@Nintendofan83 Not sure if you found your answer yet, but yeah, there's physical coming out too! I preordered the limited edition on the NIS America online store - check it out, the goodies look awesome!
