Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2021 Nintendo Direct, Then?

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

I enjoyed most of the announcements but it still felt light for being the first direct after a year and a half. The last two partner showcases actually had me more excited than this direct. The most baffling thing was the lack of news on games we already know about. Where were the two SMT games? Rune factory? Monsterhunter stories? The world ends with you? Most of these games are scheduled to release in summertime and despite nintendo claiming this direct would focus on the first half of this year they still included a lot of summer games and two 2022 titles.

Re: Introducing Knockout City, A New Dodgeball Game From The Developer Of Mario Kart Live

I'll echo others' sentiments. I did not understand that trailer at all. Wha-huh? who? Why? what was with all those different characters and different styles that seemed to be drawn from different gaming genres and why were they talking about a generic looking game where all the avatars looks like wannabe Fortnite rip-offs? Was there a point to that ad? Am I supposed to believe a 2d cartoon is playing a video game? Why is a 2D cartoon playing a video game? Why does her character not visually look like her? MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE!

Re: Nintendo "Doesn't Have Anything To Share" About Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Right Now

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

I can wait.

Random aside, is anyone else a little bewildered by the development of this game? Didn't the original game, a game built from the ground up, take five years to complete? From what I understand they began work on the sequel after finishing the DLC for BotW which came out at the end of 2017. So assuming it does come out in the second half of this year, that means it took them four years to make a game that uses the same building blocks and assets as the original? Something isn't adding up.

Re: Switch Exclusive Project Triangle Strategy Looks Set To Scratch That Final Fantasy Tactics Itch

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@Friendly My biggest concern is that all the titles listed as "summer" or later such as Fall Guys, Outer Wilds, Neon White, etc could all get pushed back due to covid or just game development in general these days.
Again, I'm not upset just confused. Actually, now that I think about it, the DLC for age of calamity is perhaps the biggest indicator of things being delayed. If you look back at other Koei Tecmo games for nintedo - OG hyrule warriors, Ultimate Alliance 3, Fire Emblem Warrios - DLC is usually out within a few months of release. The fact that wave 1 doesn't drop until almost 8 months after launch makes me realize things are not going according to plan.
It is what it is, just baffled by the messaging on Nintendo's part.

@Friendly Summer isn't first half, July is officially the start of the second half of a year and A LOT of announcements are listed as summer or later. I would have to rewatch the complete direct but the only new games listed before July that were of note (That I can remember) are: Miitopia, Famicom detective thing, Mario Golf, That Danganronpa thing and Ninja Gaiden.
Don't get me wrong, between those games and Bravely default, ghosts n' goblins, monster hunter and Pokemon Snap I'm pretty content with the switch for the moment. But again, Nintendo specifically said this direct would focus on first half of 2021. Maybe they're talking business calendar which I suppose counts since that goes into September but I'm still a bit confused by the messaging.

Re: Pillars Of Eternity Will Get No More Patches On Switch, Despite Unresolved Issues

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Let's not forget that this was made by obsidian. I love obsidian but they release some busted-ass games. Even pillars 2 has some serious issues on ps4 so I'm guessing there's only so much versus evil can do when working with something so fundamentally broken.

As for the good news, I bought this game on PC years ago and bought the switch version at launch for portability... switch at launch was BAD. To their credit, they did fix a lot and six months post launch I would argue that the switch version is perfectly playable if a bit unpolished.

Re: Ori Director Criticises "Snake Oil Salesmen" Behind No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk, And Fable

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

A man after my own heart. A person who begins their rant against gaming's biggest liars by dragging Molyneux into broad daylight and dressing him down is a dev I can respect. They also have a good point that gamers are partially to blame for this crap. You already see CDPR apologists happily looking forward to the day cyberpunk is fixed. How about we just don't give them money or the benefit of the doubt so that they actually learn a lesson for once?

Re: PSA: Planning On Buying Monster Hunter Rise? Play The Demo First To Receive Free Extras

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@Strumpan To clarify, while I liked world and iceborne I fall into your camp, liking 3, 4 and gen more. Strangely my second biggest complaint after the designs is the large open worlds. It's cool at first to hunt down monsters but since this is a series meant to be played for hundreds of hours the novelty quickly wore off and just took away from the actual fun of a monster hunter game, which would be fighting monsters of course.

Re: Feature: 6 Huge Video Game Franchises Missing From Nintendo Switch

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@Silly_G Thanks for pointing out just dance, I didn't know about that example, but it falls in line with the behavior of many publishers.

A similar story of greed and insanity was seen with doom eternal. Doom 2016 released in the launch year of the switch and shipped on a 16gb cart (admittedly with a mandatory patch) and yet years later eternal ends up as a digital only release.

Whats most baffling about these decisions is that we know 16gb carts aren't THAT expensive and have definitely dropped in price since 2017. How do I know this? In 2019 several ports hit the switch like: dragons dogma and the darksiders series. Each of these games shipped on 16gb carts but the games were also only 30 bucks. If 16gb carts are so expensive how are they able to be used on budget games and how was Bethesda able to utilize one three years ago when they were more expensive but suddenly the cost now is too risky?

Covid may have factored into this decision but I also just think its another example of a publisher cutting corners for maximum profit.

Re: A 'Pro' Switch With More Power Might Not Even Be Fully Utilised, Says Industry Veteran

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

I think most sensible people would expect a switch pro to mostly just give a simple resolution or performance increase. The problem is you have a lot of games media and independent content creators out their putting this stupid idea into gamers heads that the switch pro should be as powerful as a base ps4 and should therefore get exclusive games the regular model doesn't.

As much as I love Easy Allies I'm going to throw them (mostly Huber) under the bus for a second to illustrate this point. These kinds of gamers like to have radical pie-in-the-sky fantasy trips where they imagine best case scenarios without stopping to think about the business end of these decisions. Would I like a super ps4 powered switch? Sure, but what does that mean for developers? What does that mean for the consumer base? The switch is on fire right now, Nintendo is not going to throw a spanner into the machine by splitting their audience and putting a new burden on the shoulders of their development partners.

Re: Feature: Best Kirby Games Of All Time

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@ZeroRVL I honestly don't see it. The big gimmick mechanic was completely wasted. The "big suck" or whatever it was called is entirely scripted, only playing in designated areas of the game, and there is no actual gameplay hook to it. It doesn't challenge the player or open new ways to play, its literally a cutscene. The rest of the game, while having good level design, is nothing we haven't seen a million times since kirby's adventure.

When I think of the best kirby games I think of the games that introduce a fun new gameplay hook (planet robobot), mix up the traditional platforming with variety (superstar and its remake) or take the principles of a kirby game and apply it to a different genre (dream course)

Re: Nintendo Explains How Photo Evaluation Works In New Pokémon Snap

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

@meeto_1 There is nothing stopping people from taking photos of things they find aesthetically pleasing and posting it on social media. At the end of the day, the scoring system has to be based on some metric that the game can objectively evaluate; something as abstract and subjective as "I find this angle and composition visually appealing" isn't something that could be programmed into a game.

Re: Switch Ranked Greatest Handheld Of All Time By UK Newspaper The Guardian

Cromulent_JohnyCakes

Too early to make such declarative statements. Let's wait for the dust to settle on the Switch before determining its greatness. Also, while I appreciate the cultural and technological impact the DS had on the gaming community at large, I actually think the 3DS is the better system. The software for the 3DS is top tier and it's backwards compatible with the DS so there's that.
