Monster Hunter Rise is obviously the focus this week, but we've also got a little bit of news to share about that other Monster Hunter title, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin.
As spotted by My Nintendo News, Nintendo Australia's official game page for this upcoming release appears to have revealed the file size, and the file size of the game is estimated to be 14.6GB. Assuming this is accurate, that's more space than we expected it to take up.
Monster Hunter Rise, according to Nintendo's website, is only 6.6GB in size. And the original Monster Hunter Stories on the 3DS, for the sake of comparison, required just 1.8GB of free space.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin will arrive on the Switch on 9th July. Alongside its release will be a deluxe edition and three amiibo - Ena, Razewing Ratha, and Tsukino.
Will you be checking out Monster Hunter Stroies 2 when it arrives on the Switch? Tell us below.

The baby dragon will bring terror, it chomps off the toes of anything it sees
I welcome bigger files tbh. Usually means higher quality.
Usually.
Makes sense as this is a much more linier style game compared to main Monster Hunter that reuses it's own (lovely) assets a lot in a more sandbox collection of areas. This'll likely need more especially if it's going to be a long adventure.
Be curious to know if we will be having much of a voice track as well? That all adds up especially if they do dual audio.
@Yanina Tell that to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare lmao, I have NO idea why that game has to be so big. And it constantly gets like 10-20GB (gigabyte!) updates that seem to add *** all
@XenoShaun : Indeed, lossless audio can add several gigabytes to a game, though developers tend to heavily compress audio for Switch games, not due to any technical reason, but to save on cartridge costs (cough Smash Ultimate).
"seemingly"
guess we will have to wait till Capcom confirms it
How is Rise only 6.6GB? Now I'm worried,
I was expecting a decent sized world and a lot of content but for that file size with the graphics it has? I'm not so sure anymore
@UltimateOtaku91 The biggest games on my Switch are Spyro and Project Diva. One is a port of a triple pack of games using tons of detailed models, one is a rhythm game with over 100 songs and tons of DLC. Most my other games are 6-8. It's a matter of compression and optimization. It's more a testament to Capcom's talented optimization then any sort of negative. Once the free updates come out, the file size will balloon, but that's just how DLC works, not because the game is gouged or anythibg silly like that
@Kieroni yeah maybe you're right, just worried seeing as it's file size is the same size as a monster hunter world update and even pokemon sword and shield double the size, I think even splatoon 2 and Mario kart are bigger. It most likely will be a sizeable day one patch
@UltimateOtaku91 The maps are smaller than World's, and content/monster-wise it'll start off like World. So don't expect too much from this game at launch. I'm gonna guess we've seen almost all of the monsters already from trailers and stuff. Unless the guys that reviewed the game are hiding more. (well, besides the final bosses, lol)
@UltimateOtaku91 I mean, it could also be that the devs are good at compressing data? Comparing it to gamefreak is kind of dumb, since they've been known to bloat coding due to their inefficiency. Really though, with Rise, I wouldn't expect much until the updates. It'll be a big game but I think they probably revealed most of what'll be in the game at launch. At least the Title updates will be big and will add more faster than they did for World.
@UltimateOtaku91 Mario Kart 8 is a port, and Splatoon has DLC. PC games are always way bigger then games on Switch. Stardew Valley has bigger updates on Steam then the game is total on my Switch. I don't think you need to be worrying about a game's level of content based on its file size, that's a totally subjective unit of measurement
Looking forward to this, the first had lots of charm.
@Silly_G This is a valid criticism of games like dark souls remastered but I have to cut smash ultimate some slack here. How many songs/hours of music exist in that game? If they didn't compress it I can't imagine how much space that would take up.
@UltimateOtaku91 monster hunter rise will have a long string of free updates that will probably balloon that file size, I wouldn't worry. I suspect that covid plus the data breach meant they had more delays than they expected but still wanted to get the game out before the end of the fiscal year. Given the absurd length of MH games, waiting one month for more content probably won't be an issue as I don't see myself burning through over 100 hours in less than four weeks.
@Chowdaire World pretty much did the same thing as Rise, but Rise is getting it's updates sooner, with more content in them. G rank will probably be in the game's expansion.
@UltimateOtaku91 MH World is only 16gb
Really? With that chibi artstyle I thought it would be a lot less.
Plus Monster Hunter Rise is so big.
I loved this on the 3DS. I want this more than MH Rise
@Automated_Unit_4937 on my ps4 its over 50GB....
@Chowdaire yeah I don't anyone could put 100 hours in 4 weeks lol plus I suppose monster hunter world had quite a few monster variants but I like the look of the new ones in rise, i think after playing monster hunter world my expectations are too high and need to give Rise time with the updates etc to reach that level, I'm just glad I get to play monster hunter on handheld again
@iLikeUrAttitude Actually, the environments in the promo materials look to be pretty big and detailed. Especially the lighting.
@Chowdaire : They could have easily fit it all on a 32GB cartridge without compromising the quality. I wasn't optimistic when I found out that the base game was under 16GB in size as that seemed far too small for a game with as much content (and music) as Smash Ultimate, and I was immediately struck by the lack of range in the music, which is such a shame, as Nintendo have hindered their own product in order to save a bit of coin on cartridge size (and these compromises for the physical release then get passed on to digital buyers by proxy).
Considering that there was no doubt that the game would have been a tremendous success, and that Nintendo could charge full price for the game for as long as the Switch remains available, they of all publishers really had no excuses for being miserly.
@Yanina A Short Hike is one of the beet games I know, and that’s only 400MB
@Taekw0ndud Yeah but that is different. I meant AAA titles that get bad Switch ports could use some more GB.
Only ever played a demo of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and never understood what all the fuss is about. However I can't wait for this one having only even seen reviews of number 1 on 3DS. It's so hard to find right now!
As a RPG, there will be more landscapes. No wonder it will occupy more.
Hopefully the battle system will be improved. The 3ds one didn't make any sense and was kinda annoying.
@Yanina the problem is that being a Capcom game I bet it won't be on the cartridge... And on that case a potencial day One for me gets to 50% or less sale
@UltimateOtaku91 well when I played xenoblade Chronicles 2 for the first time I out 85h+ within 14 data as I was enjoying it that much... P.s: I do work on a full time job however I was playing on the commute journey too
I'd be getting it physically anyway so file size isn't really an issue for me. I've got 68 physical games and a tiny SD card with mostly screenshots and save data on.
I hope that equates to a meaty adventure (mmhhhmmm Tasty!), Actually looking forward to Stories 2. As for Rise, it isn't the "Ultimate" version yet and from reviews isn't complete. So the 6.6 is just the beginning, it'll reach 9-10Gig. Still smaller than Generations Ultimate. It must have alot of repeat textures and assets, or there's a decent compression method built into RE engine, which is also likely.
@Balta666 Yeah I imagine being a physical collector is really painful this generation anyway. Even if the whole thing would be on cart, at some point the newest version of the game isn't.
@Yanina I am fine with that as long as I can have the main game on the cartridge day one. Now, a box with a digital code is something that you can see the smoke getting out of my ears
As long as it fits the cartridge I see no issue.
that kinda has me excited to see what this game is packed with, really seems like this sequel is pulling all the stops
@Balta666 So big day one updates don't bother you? (From a collectors point of view, assuming the servers will shut down at some point in the future)
I really enjoyed the first game. Enough to give the main series a try at any rate! Naturally, I'll be grabbing this as well... physically.
@Yanina not really as one the main thing I buy games physically is to be able to trade them in at a later date if I am not satisfied and games with partial download decrease in value very quickly.
Day one patches can be solved by soft modding if required when the stores eventually closes
@Silly_G What about dlc though? They fit the base game on a 32gb card but now you've set a standard for the music quality. Is nintendo gonna then make players buy a micro sd card just so that they can have all the dlc when everything is said and done after a few years? Also, I think nintendo has a policy in place that a game can't exceed 16gb for digital only buys, I doubt they want to make any first party title require buying additional storage. Imagine if the base game plus dlc ended up being 50gb, if you only buy digital thats a tall order for the switch, and I am willing to bet it would hurt sales.
Maybe because it actually has a gasp story that I'd enjoy?
That's great, can't wait to see what story contents and gameplay it will deliver over Monster Hunter Rise and the first MHS game.
This can't be accurate.
My hype for this game is un paralleled,
Loved the first one i really thought a sequel was out of the question.
Funny really, as I don't like the core series, yet I love the spin-off, not like me at all.
@Yanina * cough cough * call of duty * cough cough *
@Jackpaza0508 I meant the Switch specifically. I feel like they try to not go as much overboard on it if nit necessary.
@Yanina Oh ok! I use NL and push square so I got a bit mixed up with what website I was actually on lol
How does this game take up more space than Rise
