For many Nintendo fans, the standout announcement at E3 this year was Metroid Dread - the first new entry in the original 2D Metroid series in 19 years.
It seems to have everyone buzzing, and as a result - the base game, special edition and Samus & EMMI amiibo have been in high demand. With this in mind, video game retail giant GameStop has now revealed its top 10 pre-orders following this year's E3 (via an official PR), and unsurprisingly Metroid Dread has taken out the top spot:
As you can also see - five other Nintendo Switch games have made it onto the list - illustrating just how much demand there is right now for the Japanese company's titles. This follows on from news last week about Metroid topping the Amazon "best sellers" list in the UK and US, and also featuring in the top ten games list in various other locations around the world.
If you're still yet to purchase a copy of Metroid Dread, take a look at our Nintendo Life pre-order guide. Have you played a part in the next Metroid game becoming GameStop's top pre-ordered game? Leave a comment down below.

I for one am very happy to see Metroid actually popular. It bodes well for the future if this game sells well.
Metroid Fusion was amazing. This is a sequel. It better be amazing. The trailer doesn’t make it seem all that great. I hope I am proven wrong!
So ready for Dread! Will replay Super in the meantime.
I'm not a Metroid fan either, but this is great news for this franchise. Metroid Dread could be the first game in the series to break 3 million.
...okay how is Pokemon below Metroid?
Yeah. A lot of metroidvania fans will be able to enjoy a metroid fresh game. And this one will be the biggest seller of metroid series, of course. Rejoice, Fusion fans. Is a worthy entry in the series.
why are so many people buying skyward sword its one of the laziest games ive ever seen
@Phenzy You are proven wrong cause after the E3 presentation the game was demonstrated in a live Nintendo Treehouse event showing all the great gameplay and new mechanics.
The only reason I haven’t preordered yet is because GameStop almost always offers bonus trade credit (20%, so 30% total for members) toward big new releases closer to the date. Day one for sure though. I’ve been playing Metroid since #2 for the fat old gameboy and loved every minute.
@cheesetastesgood Would you rather get nothing on Zelda's 35th anniversary?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I’m very OK with that. I just want to love the game.
Pffft, I’m ‘bout to preorder that Metroid goodness, myself. I’ve waited many years for this game.
There are trolls under the bridge of its success. Best not to feed ‘em.
I just want a special edition! Is that too much to ask?
@Pavil
Sir, I believe that your trolling is in dire need of refinement. I'll give you a C-minus for effort, and for infusing heavily subjective viewpoint using comparisons of a separate under-rated franchise. It is effective in forming a ruse that there is some actual validity in your argument, yet anyone with a trained eye will see that at best, you are merely upset that one of your personal favorite franchises remains largely overlooked. Hang in there, a kickstarter reboot is bound to happen at some point.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi lazy games like that ruin reputation so yes,
@cheesetastesgood
I for one am buying it because I want it. 🤯
Pre-ordered been playing since the nes days
@Classic603 there is nothing wrong with that
most of the preorders are from those greedy scalpers taking all the amiibos and special editions this bs needs to stop period.
@cheesetastesgood I never got it for the Wii, and I've been wanting to play it for years on a modern console. That's why I'm buying it, and I couldn't be more excited. It'll be my second 3D Zelda game.
I can't even pretend to be mad about the fanboyism on display, here.
Happy for Metroid. This game seems to be off to a good start which bodes well for the franchise. I'm sure Halo Infinite would be up there in preorders if it weren't for gamepass.
I really want this game to sell what the franchise deserves to sell. This is its "Fire Emblem Awakening" moment. If we can prove to Nintendo that the game can sell a minimum of 5 million copies, it wouldn't take so long to get another one. No Metroid-like game comes close to what Nintendo does with this franchise.
Lol good luck even if it does ok that's not going to matter as its the end of the series anyway.
@Gamepro500 the creator of the series alrdy stated its not going to end.
with every pre-order, metroid fans continue to grow more powerful
I wanted Metroid to be successful so much that we don't need to beg Nintendo to make games, now it's seems trendy, as if liking Metroid it's the coolest thing just because and honestly it kinda drives me mad 😡
"RiasGremory
@Gamepro500 the creator of the series alrdy stated its not going to end."
lol no such thing was ever said, and it is the end of the metroid series. No metroid no series....not unless people actually liked federation force.
way to go metroid. this game looks great. this and MH RISE AND SMTV are all game of the year contenders. it will be so hard to choose which one... heck all three win in my eyes.
The Pokémon Company absolutely screwed themselves over. Keep in mind, they are now directly competing against FromSoftware's Elden Ring.
I just need the SE to come back in stock! plzzzzzz
@Gamepro500 There’s been Legends of Zelda with Link but no Zelda to be found, pretty sure they can always make more Metroids without needing Metroids!
And even so, "marking an end to that story arc" about "the uncanny relationship between these Metroids and the heroine Samus" doesn't even imply an end to the Metroids themselves! It could just as easily mean no more starring Samus (dumb), or simply that they're less central to the plot, or at least less connected to Samus personally. And even if they are finally ended, totally for real this time...
... they're games, they can absolutely find an excuse to bring them back.
The end of a story arc isn't the end of a series, it's a possibility to start new arcs. Or fill in the rest of the timeline. Who cares? If people are actually buying them again and the developers want to and Nintendo okays them, there's nothing stopping them from making more later!
That's nice to see, Dread is looking great. Also, nice to see the top five are all Switch games. 👍
@link3710 It's probably just the highest of the last 24 hours before that screenshot. Pokemon was already available for pre-order, probably? It wasn't at E3 for sure.
@CoastersPaul I think it will be a conclusion to samus' relationship with the baby, x parasite, chozo, space pirates and galactic federation. This doesn't mean that none of these will cease to exist, they could all return. It's just that this narrative has revealed various origins and groups were not how they first seemed, and samus' needs to respond to the revelations at the end of fusion plus the art at the end of Samus returns.
So happy for Metroid...! Can't believe a 2D Metroid game is getting so much love. What a time to be alive!
For me, the two Monster Hunter, No More Heroes 3, Metroid Dread and Shin Megami Tensei V will be the games of the year. And what a year.
I have mine preordered, more to show early support than anything else.
Why is the chat of this news so filled with trolls?
Oh well anyway, good news. The more it sells the more Nintendo is going to focus on this series.
I've already ordered mine through Game. I can't wait. The last special editions I bought was the last guardian in 2016 and lego star wars 2nd complete saga last year. It's time for a Nintendo special edition.
@Moistnado I just want a new Metroid with Samus blabbering about D A B A B Y, with her ship shaped like D A B A B Y
Who needs to preorder Halo when that bad boy is on GamePass?? (Will preorder a limited edition when possible hehe)
I hope the smash and samus returns amiibos unlock something cool in Dread. I thought it was cool when the Metroid amiibo from Samus returns unlocked a new paint job in federation force.
@Flashlink99 is that what you really want? I suspect Samus will be mute in this game. Perhaps you could unlock this blabbering with 'da-baby' amiibo from Samus returns? What I meant by resolving plot points was the fact that she has a hyper beam from the baby sacrifice at the end of Super Metroid and it's DNA from the start of fusion. The varia suit, was fused with x parasite, which in turn fused with Samus, making her part chozo, part Metroid, part x parasite, we don't know what she will look like under that suit (except for the image at the end of fusion). It seems that the E.M.M.I are designed to extract DNA for the federation, and they have a habit of cloning dangerous organisms so I think this is where the plot is heading. Blabbering is not required.
@Moistnado Missed the joke

@cheesetastesgood Yeah, I was shocked when I saw it was number 2
This is heartening to read. I'm not sure about scalpers. It's not an obvious target. I suppose they see the hype pretty easily, but it is kind of funny how the social media response was a mix of "Nintendo had nothing" to "Nintendo won E3". Metroid is just lesser known with the big gaps in major releases and classic status without the sales history to back it up.
I've been a huge fan since the original NES Metroid had me lost in it on and off for a couple years and then SNES Super Metroid for the refinement, best-in-class polish, attention to detail, and attentiveness to the state of the player — probably in response to how much the original was lacking in some of those areas!
Anyway, very much looking forward to it and I'd love to not wait for decades between big releases in the future.
@GoldenSunRM I never added someone — Pavil was it? — to my ignore list so fast on this site. No substance, multiple stabs at trolling, just ignore. Suddenly it is less noisy in here!
Very impressive preorder figures for Metroid Dread and Mario Party Superstars.
Both Pokemon games also did quite well considering that neither titles were mentioned at the E3 Direct.
Great to see some of nintendos often sadly neglected titles at this e3. Metroid 5 I think I'm more excited for than prime 4. Advance wars, wario ware and before all this famicom detective club and pokemon snap.
Makes you think maybe hope for chibi robo, golden sun, panel de pon ( damn I miss puzzle league).mother etc...a man can dream
Aw yeah, keep that success coming! Come on Samus! This is already showing loads of promise, especially considering games like Mario golf, Mario party, and Skyward Sword are also up for pre order. We might actually do it guys!
@Roibeard64 Yeah, I agree Metroid 5 means more than Prime 4, games like Super Metroid are my favorite.
Honestly, I think Nintendo is doing a pretty great job exposing people to Dread. The developer interview and trailer were well done, and besides being slightly cheesy so was treehouse. I know many people previously not into the series giving this a glance. Now if only we could get zero mission, Samus returns and fusion onto Switch so people can go back and play the games in order. I know nintendo is trying to reassure that anyone can make this their first Metroid, but I know a lot of people who would appreciate going in order, so I don't know what Nintendo is doing there.
@KryptoniteKrunch Mostly because Switch actually has games this year...but agreed, still great to see.
wow, that's a lot of arguing I just started playing super Metroid and hopping this game would be super plus more!
@link3710 because Pokemon wasn't featured and these gae have already had announcements, with preorder spaces put up on retailer sites awhile back.
@Gamepro500 you must be blind as a bat he did state the series wont end period plan and simple just in a different direction.
so happy that Metroid Dread can become the best selling game of the franchise.
Do the people that keep making these "it's scalpers" comments not understand that it's nigh impossible for a special edition that sold out everywhere in minutes to be keeping this game continuously at the top of preorder sales & hourly charts at major retailers for the entirety of a week?
A Metroid game is about to sell very well and it's spooking folks lol
@Double-L Dude Super Metroid is such a treat, you'll love it, also its just nice that Dread isn't only garnering itself attention, but also the series as a whole, I'm seeing plenty of people going back and playing some of the older ones, and that is exciting! I can't believe we are actually about to explode as a fan base. It's a dream!
@ModdedInkling,
At the risk of sounding stupid, how exactly have the Pokemon company screwed themselves over?.
@johnvboy
It's of bit of an overstatement when I said that they "screwed" themselves over, but I'm a bit surprised that they are adamant about their release date, which is one week before Elden Ring's release date. Because of that release date, it kind of makes the two games competitors of each other; two open world games where one is from the highest-grossing media franchise, and the other being the most anticipated game.
Pokémon automatically sells, but Elden Ring has shown to have so much more potential than Pokémon Legends. People were and still are very skeptical about Pokémon Legends, especially considering the game not only looks sub-par to most open worlds and RPGs, it also looks sub-par to other Pokémon games.
@ModdedInkling I assure you the overlap for fans of Elden Ring and Pokémon is so minuscule you can safely ignore it lol.
@ModdedInkling,
See your point, but Surely Pokemon games sell great numbers no matter what, and as for looking sub-par, I bet most potential buyers will have little to no issues with it's visuals, I feel they need more polish, but love the art style.
@johnvboy
People definitely will still buy Pokémon no matter how much they complain about it.
@ModdedInkling,
The internet minorities will always complain, not so sure hey represent the majority of Pokemon players.
"you must be blind as a bat he did state the series wont end period plan and simple just in a different direction."
The end of the metroid series means the end of metroid lol, but its been dead for a while this forgotten game shows that. It would make more sence for them to make a game people actually care about like i dont know...f-zero.
@johnvboy
Except they aren't as small as they used to be. Remember the number of people who complained about the lack of the National Dex in SwSh? Even people who completed the game 100% and enjoyed the game still criticized it for the missing Pokémon. The same can be said with Pokémon Legends.
Even though it has a questionable art style with a choppy frame rate and lower resolution, it might still very well be fun, but it definitely won't stop the complaints from rolling in.
@ModdedInkling,
Agree it's larger, but still small compared the the potential purchasers of these games.
Also you have to understand people who complain will shout the loudest, people who are happy with these games just tend to get on with it.
@johnvboy
That's already common knowledge. I was just pointing out how the minority isn't as small as it used to be.
@ModdedInkling,
True.
