Games don't normally celebrate their own birthday unless it's a major milestone, but one that seems to do it time and time again is Square Enix's RPG, Octopath Traveler. This game started out life as a Nintendo Switch exclusive in 2018 and was eventually made available on other platforms.
While a sequel still seems to be on the cards, Square Enix is currently focused on the new mobile release Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. Earlier this week though, the original game celebrated its fourth anniversary with some special new artwork:
Octopath Traveler's success opened the door to titles like Bravely Default II on the Switch as well as Triangle Strategy. A few other Square Enix RPG and tactical strategy games are also on the way such as The DioField Chronicle and Live A Live.
If you still haven't got around to Octopath Traveler yet, be sure to check out our Nintendo Life review. We awarded it an excellent 9 out of 10 stars. Have you played it? Tell us down below.

Time sure flies! I remember picking up this gem on day 1 and I couldn't stop playing (100+ hours) I'm a big fan of 2D-HD because of this game! I regret not buying the Collector's Edition when I had the chance.
Now bring on Live A Live!
Love seeing Tressa front and center as she was my favorite character from the game.
What are you talking about? This game definitely came out like half a year ago, regardless of what the calendar says. Also, whenever they want to make another one, I'm good to go. Loved syncing up buffs, boosts, and breaks with a powerful skill and completely shredding a boss's health. Plus the music was great.
Ah, I hope they have the next one coming out soon! Awesome gameplay and the soundtrack is still in my rotation for study music. I know the story was super divisive, but I personally loved having a series of mostly disconnected mini stories for each character. Made it feel like a playable short story anthology, and the way it all came together in the optional ending was super satisfying.
Loved this game. I still regularly play the soundtrack to this day.
Loved the full story of the game and how each member sometimes were inadvertently impacted by it. Ripple effects work way better than “you are the chosen one” stories for me. Great game.
In all honesty I really didnt like Octopath. Found the combat boring, (hit weak point, lay on damage, repeat) and the lack of connection between characters made it hard to get invested.
I love this game so much. The music, the voice acting, the battle system, the art style—all absolutely terrific. Don’t make me do a “Sophie’s Choice” between “Octopath Traveler” and “Triangle Strategy.” I can’t wait for what’s next.
Haven't played it yet, waiting for it to go on sale for $30 on the eShop again.
What I'd most want out of an Octopath 2 is stories brought together a little more by the end of the game itself, I think, rather than only really being connected by the post-game. Let the game acknowledge other characters are there in the latter parts! Oh, and maybe an airship.
But I definitely enjoyed the first.
2D-HD engine is the best thing squareenix has done for switch, I really hope they keep making this kind of games and remaking old one with this engine 😃
Great game! I enjoyed it a lot (except the final boss) and it has a great soundtrack! One of the best titles for Square Enix!
More 2DHD games please, Square and Enix (folk really need to stop calling them Square because Enix were ace too.)
Final Fantasy 6 for 2D-HD next please!!!
I loved this one surprisingly much. Interesting story, fab looking, combat didn't bore me (which from my PoV is not a given in jrpgs), and good conclusion. They shouldn't have made the ending so "hidden"/optional though I think.
@Royalblues If you enjoy Strategy RPGs then do not sleep on Triangle Strategy. It's brilliant.

I've always wanted to come back to this game after abandoning it after the first chapter of each of the characters since I still adore the world, style, gameplay, characters and music. I think what I need to do is stop moping about it and just start a completely new file (with the new knowledge that I need to get everyone's level up a lot more than before) because this game deserves all the love and attention in the world.
Like, Flamesgrace and the surrounding Frostlands is one of my favourite video game songs/locations of all time and I want to come back to it so badly.
Really liked it, way more than I was confident I would. And according to the player data I put some 60-80 hours into it, iirc 😳
Glad we'll get something somewhat similar with Live-A-Live in a week!
Loved the game. Actually preferred it to Triangle Strategy
Thanks for making me feel old
ahhh how I want to play this game... i've been trying to find for a decent price on internet.. but it's hard..
Octopath and DQ11..
and yes, its soundtrack is brillant!!
