Nintendo fans waited a long time for Square Enix's RPG Final Fantasy VII, and it finally showed up in 2019 on the Switch.
With this in mind, the timeless classic is now 25 years old. To celebrate, the Japanese publisher and developer has revealed two brand new anniversary logos for the title. It includes artwork from Tetsuya Nomura - an artist on the original '97 PlayStation release.
The part about "the year ahead" - is likely a reference to Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Part 2 - a PlayStation exclusive. It will follow on from the release of part one, which arrived on the PlayStation 4 in 2020.
While we're not expecting much on the Nintendo front, at least we'll always have Cloud and Sepiroth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. If you've not played this game yet, what are you waiting for? It's a must-play if you're a fan of RPGs. Here's what we had to say in our review:

I personally do not like FF VII for being too exploited from Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, etc.
I didn't see the appeal from over exploited FF VII and the ultra realistic graphic from FF VII Remake just turned me off.
I personally never like too realistic graphic.
I get the impression that OG VII's fine - pretty good, even! - but has gotten so hyped up and sort of become a baseline that it doesn't have a hope of impressing new players nearly as much.

As much as I love the original FFVII, I can't say the same for the whole compilation that came after. I remember liking Crisis Core back in the day, but everything else just feels so far off from what made the original so good. The remake was a huge mixed bag for me overall with some aspects being really good and others being infuriating. I'll probably keep an eye on the anniversary celebrations, but I'm not really expecting anything that appeals to me personally. Hopefully we'll get something cool though!

Honestly I don't see how this is going to have much to do with Nintendo. Sure the original is on Switch and Cloud is in Smash but I don't think any actual celebration is gonna take part in Nintendo's side of things. Maybe they'll share a screenshot or two from Smash, I guess.

I sometimes wish they had shown the same love for 8 and 9, but at least I don’t roll my eyes whenever I see something about those games now.

@Anti-Matter I had loads of fun playing 7 last year, but I played a lot of snes games (including 6) before I got into it. Really appreciated the leap they must have made between 6 and 7. Loved the characters, except Sephiroth... Who is just there for some reason! 😂
I see you haven't played 6 yet, definitely get on that, it's still really good if you can get behind the snes graphics!
@CoastersPaul played it for the first time last year, was still 100% into it. The graphics require some imagination to get through. But there are still some wow moments in there!
I hate complicated customization in games. The materia system is a blast to use, and has a lot of depth of you want it!
The characters are a lot of fun and really easy to connect with. The main star is that AMAZING soundtrack. Giving every last second an emotional load.
Biggest downside: you probably know the biggest story beats. One is the "Luke I'm your father" of gaming. But the story in between got me, there's still some great mysteries, the romance plot has different outcomes so it's a gamble till the very end what happens...
And the game's just fun! A lot of minigames, different environments, you're never in the same place too long. (And the boss battles are great!! )
So, use your imagination, and there's still a lot to fall in love with!
@Anti-Matter I don't really agree with your ranking of VII. I've played both the original and the remake and thought both were very good games.

Kinda interested in Ever Crisis but the chances of a Switch port are kinda slim. At this point I'm more interested in what lies in store for Persona/SMT/Atlus and Xenoblade rather than any Final Fantasy stuff.

Shame they never gave FF VI any treatment at all. Not really looking for a full on remake a la VII, but a bit more love would be totally warranted. Story is far superior in my opinion.

Has NintendoLife just decided that FFVIIR Part 2 is a Playstation exclusive (third paragraph)? Even though the first is on PC and potentially could still come to Xbox (and Steam/PC Xbox store)?
Also Crisis Core is a beautiful game and one of my favourite video game stories.

The new-gen version of the first part of the remake is on Windows since December 2021 via deal with Epic. The exclusivity deals that Square Enix signs are usually 6 or 12 months long. This means that the first part will come to Xbox after June or after December 2022. The announcements of this year could be the Xbox release after June or the reveal of the second part of the remake.

Square Enix will probably release absolutely nothing for Switch, if anything they'll either release more mobile games, giving away NFTs, or just tease the second exclusive episode of FFVII not-so remake for the PS5. They are lazy now and I don't think I'll ever expect anything interesting from an anniversary of any kind from them anymore.

If FFVIIR2 is a PS5 exclusive, it’ll be the first game to actually entice me to commit to a purchase.
Personally, I don’t understand how a console sells nearly 15 million units without a single killer app to back it up.
I wish Final Fantasy 6 would get a remaster or something. I am glad people like 7 but it is a bit frustrating to see it get all the attention.
One of my favorite all-time games. It was such a gripping game that my grades tanked in Spring 1997. And I don't regret it one bit.

I have different perception and life experience about FF VII.
I didn't see any appeal from FF VII for being overrated and over exploited.
It just blah for me.
I still prefer FF VIII, IX and X for the Best Three.
I started playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time a couple of years ago when it was on sale along with Dragon Quest 1,2 and 3 during the first months of the quarantine in my area. I think it was a real spectacle for 1997, but sometimes those pre-rendered backgrounds are a little difficult to traverse and I don't know where to go/where I can go.
I need to go back and finish it, though.

FF XIII was Blah, XIII-2 and Lightning Return are even worse. Only played FF XIII PS3 and it was terrible in term of gameplay.
Never like FF XV for being too realistic and more mature things. Instant banned in my gaming area.
FF VII was blah. Too many unnecesary prequel and sequels that ruined the whole things of FF VII and the Remake with ultra realistic graphic just turned me off. It was too terrible game for me. Too many BS from FF VII. Instant banned too in my gaming area.
Certainly Square-Enix will be stupid enough to announce NFTs related to it, proving management that has never played the game.
@HammerGalladeBro That difficulty about the backgrounds might be exactly why the English localization added a feature where you could push Select to put icons on the screen to highlight exits and other key spots (supposedly the original Japanese release didn't have that).

I'm hoping Final Fantasy: Ever Crisis will get a Switch release, as a console-adapted package similar to how they did with Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition. Of course, the full on remake would be awesome on Switch, but that might have to wait until a Switch hardware revision.
@Anti-Matter visually FF7 is the only one that is cyberpunky, try making people that like sci fi cyberpunk themes to like the other ones that are so visually different.
I appreciate the ff franchise that always try a different visual language on each new game. and I'm glad ff7 exists cause its ff take on cyberpunk themes.
@Robzilla I know right! Used to be my favorite publisher but now I think Monolith has that honor.
one issue i have about the psone era FF games is more to do with the modern ports than the originals in that they have this issue where they use the original resolution backdrops along with higher resolution characters which causes the assets to clash hard, also the PC version of the game which iirc these are based on (at least when it comes to VII and VIII, with IX being based on the mobile version) had some subtle differences with its visuals in combat such as minor visual effects being absent.
Granted there seems to be a pushback in some gaming circles when it comes to discussing visual design but i do feel like i enjoy the more consistant style of the psone games over the modern ports, the same could be said with those now delisted mobile/pc ports of FFV and FFVI in that the pixel art of the older versions (and the newest pc/mobile ports) holds up a lot better than the odd look that the other versions had.
I just find it more noticable with the psone games due to how much more emphasis there was in terms of environments, with every town and dungeon being unique looking.
