Re: The Man Behind Sega's Wonder Boy Series Hates The Controls In Super Mario Bros.

CaviarMeths

Oh man, I couldn't disagree more. Mario is like THE definitive example of intuitive and responsive controls. Especially later games with the diamond face buttons, the way your thumb fits over Y for running and B for jumping is perfection.

It's also important to note that most platformers of the time used Up on the D-Pad to jump... which is a horrible idea and everyone who does it should feel ashamed of themselves. Yes, even Smash.

Re: I'll Take Zelda And Mario Over Sharing Call Of Duty With Sony And Microsoft, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

Reggie...

Your machine has lower specs, completely different architecture, and a userbase that is generally unreceptive to 3rd party content. It doesn't really matter how big the userbase is. You're still not going to get those AAA multiplats.

The second part is just nonsense. It's not a "this or that" situation. The PS3 had an extensive library of both exclusives and multiplats.

On a personal note, the biggest shame of the Wii U for me is that of that extensive PS3 library, almost all of my favorite games on it were 3rd party exclusives from Japanese studios like NIS, Atlus, and Bamco. In other words, the type of games that could easily be on the Wii U, but aren't. I can live without the AAA multiplats and both Sony and Microsoft's 1st party IP. Them not being on Wii U is no big loss to me. The bigger loss is not having games like Disgaea 5 and Guilty Gear Xrd.

Listing the lack of exploration and open world as a "good" thing and welcome change from retro RPGs is really messing with my perception here. Large open maps is one of the things I absolutely miss most about old RPGs. Area selection screens and long series of hallways can bugger right off.

Re: Moon Chronicles Developer Seeking Interest for Wii U Version Through Kickstarter Campaign

@Jaz007 Backers can get burned. When you fund a project, you're not purchasing anything tangible. There's risk involved, if the project doesn't meet its goal or if the starter doesn't follow through.

For a company like RK, crowdfunding can be seen as unethical. They have several games out now and unless they have poor sales or terrible management, they shouldn't need to shove that risk onto the consumer.

Re: Iwata Cites "Same-Generation Hypothesis" For Strong Smash Bros. And Pokémon Performance

CaviarMeths

I think Iwata is right in his analysis, but a little off in the demographic. I would say 15-22, not 18-25. I'm 25 and nobody my age was playing Pokemon in 2003. We were 14-15 in 2003. That's the "Ew, Pokemon is for kids!" age where we thought "childish" things would make us uncool. I distinctly remember going to my first party when I was 15, so no, I definitely wasn't playing Pokemon lol.

Re: Poll: Should Nintendo Follow Microsoft's Lead With A Wii U Price Cut?

CaviarMeths

@hydeks The PS4 doesn't need a price cut at all. Last month, Microsoft had a promotion where you got a free game with purchase of the console. That included bundles. You could get a Forza or Madden bundle for $400 and get Destiny as a free game. That's $50 less than the PS4 Destiny bundle AND came with an extra free game. Still got beaten by PS4 in sales. It couldn't even beat PS4 in US or UK, its most dominant markets.

With the XB1 price cut, $350 for a machine that you don't want is still a worse deal than $400 for a machine that you do want, and for the vast majority of the market, the XB1 is a machine that they don't want. Outside of US and UK, it's a complete slaughter. The PS4 is outselling it 5 to 1 in some regions. 10 to 1 in Japan.

@gari14 Maybe because Mario Kart 8 was the last 1st party retail game. Surely there were some Bayo 2 adverts that you missed though, because the game broke the top 10 in UK all-format charts.

Re: Poll: Should Nintendo Follow Microsoft's Lead With A Wii U Price Cut?

CaviarMeths

I think it would be wiser to put more in the box, so to speak, than lower the price on the box. The problem isn't cost, it's value. Software and hardware bundles will be key. Not just games, but bundling with extra controllers or amiibo will surely increase value in the eyes of parents and gamers.

The XB1, on the other hand, really needed a price drop to be competitive with the PS4 because it's essentially the same product as the PS4 competing for the same audience. There's not really any value that Microsoft can add to it, because whatever else they put in the box, Sony can just do the same thing. Dropping the price is the only way they're going to remain competitive through the holiday.

The Wii U is currently being sold at a profit, by the way. Hardware gets cheaper over time, not just for the consumer, but also for the manufacturer. Nintendo reported back in May that they were no longer taking losses on hardware.

Re: Atlus Discounts 3DS eShop Titles in North America

CaviarMeths

@flummerfelt There are so many spin-offs that it's a little too much to go into for an article comment, but there's 4 main series games, with SMT IV on 3DS being the latest. The one before that was Nocturne on PS2, so the main series is spaced pretty far apart. All the stories are self-contained like Final Fantasy though, so you don't need to play one to play another. They're challenging dungeon crawler games.

Devil Survivor: Overclocked is the newest SMT spin-off. It's a tactical RPG game set in modern day Japan. It's pretty good too. It's probably the best non-Fire Emblem tactical RPG on the 3DS.

The biggest and most unique spin-off is the Persona series, which has its own fanbase and is probably even bigger and more popular than the main series. Those are Sony exclusives, but if you have access to them, I highly recommend Persona 3 and 4.

Re: Mad Men Football Shows Off Its New N64-Inspired Sports Uniform

CaviarMeths

I really don't think N64-style graphics are something anyone should strive for these days. It was Nintendo's first steps with 3D polygons and they've aged horribly. They look worse than the sprite graphics of SNES games.

That said, the video is pretty bad, but it's pre-alpha, so I don't want to be too disparaging.

Re: Capcom Won't Greenlight Sequels If A Game Doesn't Sell Over Two Million Copies

CaviarMeths

This is a little misleading. The won't greenlight AAA sequels if the predecessor didn't sell 2 million. That doesn't necessarily apply to Darkstalkers, Mega Man, Ace Attorney, or even Street Fighter. It really only applies to stuff like Resident Evil, DmC, Dragon's Dogma, or Azura's Wrath.

So this is pretty much non-news, as most studios won't greenlight sequels to AAA games that didn't sell 2 million.

Re: Review: Red Riding Hood (Wii U eShop)

@ZeroZX_Dev I dunno if the cause is so noble... Every parent should read to their children. It's a huge part of not only the child's development, but the bonding between parent and child. I refuse to believe that there are parents who don't have 10 minutes to read to their kids every day, unless they have quintuplets or something. Some people are just too lazy and expect TV to raise their kids for them.
