Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has managed to reach over 2 million physical sales in Japan, and continues to dominate the competition. Keeping things healthy for the 3DS, Yokai Watch 2 comes in at second just ahead of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS by less than a hundred copies. The popularity of Yokai Watch 2 is rivalled by none at the moment, but Monster Hunter is starting to creep towards similar figures.
Software for Sony's systems take up a majority of the charts with yet more new games being released to knock 3DS titles from their perches. Despite the barrage of new title, Mario Kart 8 impressively still manages to hang on despite its age and the lower interest towards the Wii U in Japan compared to handheld systems.
Take a look at the charts for yourself below, lifetime sales are in brackets.

As far as hardware goes, it's fairly grim across the board; every single system has sold less machines than last week except the Wii U. Don't break out the buying just yet though, as the rise is not significant and sales for the system are still much lower than we'd like.
The New 3DS LL (XL in the West) continues to be the best seller, still managing to shift an admirable number of units. It vastly outshines its slightly smaller sister the New 3DS despite the ability to accommodate the attractive Kisekae plates, which the LL cannot.
See the numbers below for yourself, last week's sales are in brackets.
1. New 3DS LL – 41,633 (59,386)
2. New 3DS – 14,040 (21,281)
3. PlayStation Vita – 10,688 (12,230)
4. 3DS LL – 9,270 (10,665)
5. PlayStation 4 – 8,906 (8,942)
6. PlayStation 3 – 5,066 (5,138)
7. 3DS – 4,730 (5,258)
8. Wii U – 4,696 (4,273)
9. PlayStation Vita TV – 718 (795)
10. Xbox One – 599 (613)
11. Xbox 360 – 79 (89)
12. PSP – 50 (76)

Kind of ironic that Wii U was literally the only hardware that increased. What a dismal week.
Also interesting to note that you have to go all the way down to #7 in the software to find a new release. Even the new Vita games tanked, and the Monter Hunter-Smash-Yokai Watch trinity is still untouchable.
The Playstation 3 is still gaining sales in Japan... that alone says it all.
Accounting for all 3DS sales it's almost 70K. I don't think it's that bad, especially since there is so many other new games fighting for attention. They'll bounce back soon with the Holidays coming up.
Kudos to Yokai Watch 2, that thing is a beast.
Tis business as usual.
@Blast - Whats more crazy is that the old 3DS LL sold nearly 10,000 each the past 2 weeks the new 3DS LL has been sold. I'm guessing they must be MH4G bundles, but it's still 10k a week for an obsolete system that millions in Japan already own.
Sunset Overdrive only sold 3,500, but that has to be close to 90% of the X1's install base. Probably insomniac fans from the Sony days
1 (maybe 2) weeks until the MK8 bundle and Captain Toad, Wii U NEEDS to see a sales spike then. I don't blame the japanese for not buying the Wii U ahead of that bundle but Captain Toad and the impending SSBU needs to start moving some consoles.
New 3DS slows down, still 5x the sales of #2. Not too shabby.
@MoonKnight7 - It is the same system as far as playing games, so it makes sense to do the math. That 1 week of "3DS family" sales is a full year of Wii U sales in Japan. That's 50x more. Don't know why people are always complaining or worrying about "3DS has no games".
Sunset Overdrive – 3,534 (New)
Ouch...
@rjejr
Agreed, the real concern is just how low Wii U sales are. We'll see how good they are to it as we go through the Holidays, those bundles you mentioned will no doubt help.
The 3DS is doing perfectly fine. There's naturally going to be a dip in sales right about now, but they'll begin to level out and/or start selling better as we go through Nov. and into Dec. It's the typical yin and yang of retail.
@Alex_Onley There isn't a subtitle on this article
Everyone is saving for the holidays. I would expect sales to dip a bit for the next few weeks.
Wow Wii u sales are back to pre mk8 numbers. Not good
Still can't believe mk8 hasn't hit the million mark in Japan yet. It's a slow burner now I guess.
Japan sure loves the LL. Personally, I want the faceplates more than I want the crappy bigger screens.
Those top 3 3ds games between them have sold 6.5m copies, including downloads it must be close to 8m, thats an astounding figure for just 3 games. Once the pokemon games come out im sure we'll be talking 10m+ for just 4 games
Goooo Monster Hunter! Make tons of money!
So Capcom will finally make a new MH game on the Wii U, lol
I'm still hoping for a Wii U version of MH4U.
3DS going great, Wii U struggling. Nothing changes. Judging by the nearly-as-bad PlayStation sales home consoles continue to struggle generally.
I keep saying it, but if the fusion really is a thing nintendo will clean up in japan
@rjejr
I truly feel that some consoles deserve their sales and others do not. When the Wii U was struggling in 2013, though I enjoyed several fantastic games on the system I did understand that it hadn't yet earned success- the library was not yet impressive enough to command the respect of gamers.
But I think there comes a point in time where you must acknowledge the appeal of the library. The sales might not reflect it, but I honestly feel, from the bottom of my heart, that the Wii U has commanded respect, and has earned its place and now deserves success.
Unfortunately, just because a console has proven itself doesn't always mean it's going to succeed. I really feel, going forward, that low sales are no longer warranted, and that any lack of success is no longer the fault of Nintendo or the console or it's library. I think they've done a fantastic job turning this console into a treasure trove of gaming gems and masterpiece titles, and I actually feel sympathetic towards Nintendo concerning the continued ignorance of the gaming populous in the face of such a masterful collection of games on offer.
Geez, Microsoft needs to just walk away at this point. Pretty sure that the expats have bought their systems by now.
@JaxonH - That was so sincere and heartfelt I almost feel bad writing a rebuttal, I just want to say - tell it to the man or heck yeah or something.
"that any lack of success is no longer the fault of Nintendo"
It is Nintnedo's fault though if they don't spend the money on advertising and marketing. They are very bad at building hype, hysteria or even a basic level of public awareness. Titanfall, Destiny, Watch Dogs, Drive Club, all bashing us about the head for months on end and many people bought them even w/ mixed to middling reviews. Nintendo has to be all coy and secretive and only give out dates within months of release. They got lucky w/ Wii, but N64, Gamecube and Wii U show they don't compete, they just do their own thing. And maybe for them doing their own thing makes them some money and keeps them in business, but it doesn't inform the public enough to get them to buy many consoles. The console's been out for 2 years and I still have family members who own the Wii who don't even know about Wii U. It just never caught on, and realistically at this point it probably never will unless they go full court press, but we all know they won't.
Xbox 1 in it's 1st year has had a $100 price cut kicking out the Kinect and now another $50 holiday cut. And it's Sunset Overdrive and COD tv ads are everywhere. And we know COD isn't their game but you'ld never know watching the non-stop ads. Wii U from 1 perspective has never had a price cut in 2 years - base model was $299 and now the base model is $299. Admittedly it's a much better bundle but the general public only sees the bottom line price, which has been $299 since launch 2 years ago. So you have a large group of people who have never heard of it, and another group thinking $299 for another Wii console is still too much money. And the game many people have been waiting for is coming out and they don't even bundle it?!?!
And it's not like Nintneod doens't know how to do these things. 3DS was selling poorly - a full 33% price drop in less than 6 months - $249 to $169. To match that the $299 Wii U should have hit $229, the $349 bundle $269. And they do know how to market and advertise as well. New Pokemon games are announced in Feb or March w/ holiday release dates. And there is a constant stream of news the entire time in between. B/W2, X/Y, AS/OR, same pattern the past few years - announce, date, steady stream of non-stop news. No other game, not even Mario or Kart, gets that kind of coverage. SSBB was close, so was SSBU, but they always kept us guessing until the end on the date, Pokemon gets it very early on, people circle it on their calendars, they wait and wait and convince all their friends to get it when it comes out. Can't do that w/ undated games.
So yes, Wii U has a good price and great selection of games and every gamer - casual, family, hardcore - should get one. I've finally started telling my family. But if Nintendo really wants to sell Wii U, it needs an actual bottom line price cut, and much more advertising, and the bundle people want.
