Bandai Namco has announced Dragon Ball: The Breakers, a new, asymmetrical online game that's headed to Switch and other platforms in 2022.
The game has you teaming up with others in seven-on-one matches; the seven Survivors, having been sucked into the mysterious 'Temporal Seam', must team up to fend off the eighth standalone player, known as the Raider. The Raider's task is to simply wipe out the team of Survivors, who can only use items, weapons, and vehicles they find to try to escape.
The announcement trailer (above) gives us our first look at the game, but we also have a feature list for you below, with thanks to Gematsu:
Key Features
Escape as a Team… Or on Your Own! – Cooperate with others while there is still time, but the Raider or other Survivors’ decision might force you to go at it alone. What will be your playstyle?Trapped in a Temporal Seam – Escape from a large map composed of several areas, but be careful! The Raider is always looking for you and may destroy areas to reduce your living space, making your chance of escaping always more limited…
Enjoy Three First Iconic Raiders… Cell, Buu, and Frieza! – From the Dragon Ball franchise—As a Raider you will enjoy overwhelming powers to hunt and wipe out survivors. Master each Raider’s power to track, catch your victims to evolve and get even more powerful!
Customize in Your Likeness – Whether you are a Raider or a Survivor, choose your progression path and unlock perks, skins, etc. to fine tune your own personal strategy to escape as a Survivor, or hunt as a Raider…
Enjoy Unique Power-Ups and Items – Vehicles, weapons, grappling hooks… make the most of each gimmick to face against the Raider and struggle for your life!
It's also been confirmed that Dragon Ball: The Breakers will link save data with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, although full details on this are yet to be revealed.
We'll make sure to keep an eye out for further news on this one, including an eventual release date. Until then, feel free to share your early thoughts with us in the comments below.

This looks hilarious, like a cuter version of 'Dead By Daylight'
That takes a few liberties, Imperfect Cell powering up to Semi-perfect Cell by absorbing a random human rather than either Android 17 or 18, and the presence of Dragon Ball-Era Bulma and Oolong.
But the idea of being one of the random humans during Imperfect Cell's attacks on the human cities and struggling for survival is pretty fun.
They probably have to omit the part where Cell can detect power levels otherwise hiding would be impossible.
AKA the child-friendly Dead by daylight.
Dragon Ball: Amogus?
Gotta admit wasn't on the 2021 vision board, but I can 'Z' it now!
DBZ X Friday the 13th? Ok Bandai.
The fact that I can play as Oolong with a bazooka makes this pure gold. Now, if only I could play as Hercule with exploding Game Boys...
Looks fun. Can't wait to get disconnected.
Oooo love these "survive the night" type games. Pretty neat concept. Definitely on my radar
@Mauzuri Maybe they're focusing on villains with multiple 'forms'. But agreed this trifecta have been done to the ground.
@Mauzuri
Cell, Frieza, and Buu all enjoy multiple transformations where they will gradually become more intimidating.
I suppose Syn Shenron powering up to Omega Shenron as he absorbs the remaining dragon balls, and Goku Black powering up to Super Saiyan Rosé and fusing with Zamasu works, the Future Trunks Saga definitely lends itself to this scenario.
@Tim_Vreeland It better have "Old McDonald had a farm" in the soundtrack (see AVGN Halloween 2021 episode for reference)
@Greatluigi
If you are familiar with Bulma and Oolong (the people hiding in the trailer) you wouldn't think it's child friendly at ALL
This.... looks unique! Creative! And fun! Haven't seen that in an anime game since Fighterz. Looking forward to seeing how this will be rushed and unfinished knowing Dragonball games reputations
Another copy cat of DBD
Dead by DragonBall is actually a pretty cool concept.
OMG Its DBZ Dead my daylight, Lets goo! i'm 100% down to play this day one.
It just occurred to me that depending on production pipelines, that this might be one of Christopher Ayres' last performances of Frieza since his tragic passing.
If not new lines, maybe some re-used ones, or a new voice actor if new lines are needed.
@RupeeClock The updates and and maybe crossover dlc, that could happen is insane!
Evidently, I don't know what this "Dead by Daylight" thing is. My first thoughts while watching the trailer was "Oh, so this is just a knock-off of Evolve, that failed concept by the Left 4 Dead folks".
Seeing this ties into Xenoverse 2, I'm surprised they didn't just make this an additional mode to that game. Like when they added the whole Yu-Gi-Oh card game thing to it. It's my understanding they're still making a large profit off Xenoverse 2 and this looks pretty asset reusing anyways.
@Clod No, this needs to me its own game in my opinion, I rather it not be tied to that game, It needs different devs.
@RupeeClock Lets just act like cell is a complete noob at finding people, and that, he some how lost the power as perfect cell....Ok it doesn't make sense, but i'm really glade they tried not to, just for the sake of staying true to the source.
So this game takes place in the timeline where Vegeta was killed by Krillin in the Saiyan saga and Trunks/Future Trunks was never born? Cool can't wait to see how it unravel.
You know, this might actually turn out okay.
My only worry, is that games like this always fail, DBD is the only one that has really stayed up on top, but because of how hard it is to get it right, I hope they can do it right.
@Mauzuri think it's mostly due to being the biggest villains of Z and thus the most recognizable, in addition to the transformations
i have very little doubt they'll add dlc characters, bamco loves milking their anime games
I have absolutely no interest in Dragonball Z these days...But the title had me intrigued, that is, until I found out it's just a Dragonball Z version of Dead by Daylight.
I was expecting this to be the part of a series (pick any, they all do the same shtick) where all the useless characters like Yamcha, Tien and Krillen try to survive, fend off and buy time until whatever OP character comes to roll the credits (probably Goku) or maybe given continuity doesn't matter since it's just a game, whittle the villain down and beat him themselves.
I love this concept, so I'm excited to see how this turns out. I never tried Friday the 13th or Dead By Daylight cause I'm not into horror and gore, but I will definitely keep my eye on this.
@Mauzuri the fact that the article states “ Enjoy Three First Iconic Raiders… Cell, Buu, and Frieza!” Makes me think if the game is well received DLC with more raiders will come
That's pretty freakin' cool. I bought Xenoverse 2 and FighterZ when they were on sale for like $10 a piece but have hardly touched them. I'm just not very good at fighting games. This seems like something I would enjoy a lot more, though, but I don't know if it'd be worth 60 bucks or anything. Hoping this is a free-to-play title with optional cosmetics you can buy that don't give you an advantage. Something like Fortnite. Since it requires a group of 8, I feel like it has to be for the online community to remain viable, right?
Looks really good!!
I'm very interested in this, looks fantastic.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! I've always been curious to try the Dead By Daylight gameplay and a Dragonball Z twist is just AWESOME!
I'm 100% getting this! Its made even more awesome by the fact that you can play as the three main big bads, customize your character, have different abilities, an open environment AND they took one of the most exciting parts of Dragonball Z (the danger regular folk have to face every time there's a threat) and made it WAY MORE INTERESTING! Holy hell! Day one purchase for sure!
I hope they keep adding to it too! I was just thinking we could use a new Dragonball Z game. And if more villains (Janemba, Broly etc) were added, that'd be even better! More costumes, character types and cosmetics would be nice too! Very well done!
@ThatNyteDaez I hope they allow us to pick which one we spawn as if we got the role, I would just main buu.
@PBandSmelly well... less scary and gruesome version of dead before daylight. 😅😅
Haha this looks awesome! Can't wait to try the beta
@Mauzuri I am willing to bet Zamasu and Goku Black will be in the base game as well given their popularity.
I am hoping this extends to outside Earth like a Namekian trying to survive against Moro.
I would also love to see them a gameplay segment on Demon King Piccolo's rampage on Earth that predates Dragon Ball.
All that said, I think they focused on Frieza, Cell, and Buu first because those three are seen as the unholy Trinity and the three most iconic villains in the franchise.
Although Zamasu and Goku Black are close.
@Snatcher I am 100% sure you'll be able to pick between all three villains whenever you land the chaser role (forgot what its called already haha). In all other games this one is clearly based off, you can choose which baddie you want to be. Often in the middle of the match. I'd say the only thing you might have to worry about is landing the villain role over someone else who also wants to be the villain in that same match - since there can only be one at a time. But I'm betting there will be ways around that. You'll have plenty of fun as Majin Buu, I'm certain.
Honestly I'll be happy as anything. Villain Role would be great as both Freiza and Cell. Survivor role would be fun too - I'm pretty good at hiding so I'm confident I'll have a blast. xD
@ThatNyteDaez I'm going to play the hell out of this one.
Honestly, this looks really cool and I'd take it over another Xenoverse game any day. Not that Xenoverse is bad, I enjoyed both, but 2 just felt like 1 with a slightly different storyline and new characters so I don't feel like there's much point in doing a third. I like that they're trying something new, and as a fan of both asymmetrical horror and Dragon Ball, I'm absolutely looking forward to this.
@RupeeClock The last few Dragon Ball games had someone else voice Frieza due to Ayres' health issues, so my guess is it will be the same case here unfortunately. I'd love to be wrong though, it would be cool to see it as a final send-off to him.
@Snatcher SAME! A brand new Dragonball game is such a relief since I dont play Xenoverse 2 anymore and FighterZ is beyond me. xD
I just saw a youtube video about the The Breakers as well and the youtuber stated the game is connected to the Xenoverse universe and will have some connectivity to Xenoverse save data. So I bet this will be especially exciting for people who played Xenoverse at least one time or another.
SO cool!
@ThatNyteDaez Its also great that there doing a new idea for a DBZ game, its always the same thing but this time, this is just wacko!
Looks pretty fun
@Snatcher Its about time we branched out. Much as I love DBZ combat, we've already tried everything under the sun where fighting games are concerned. The Breaker is a long overdue game type in the Dragonball sphere.
Now if only we could get a couple more...
@ThatNyteDaez Just not a DBZ BR LOL. But I agree, The fighting games are a been there done that, but this is a whole new beast.
