Update [Wed 28th Jul, 2021 02:00 BST]: Following on from the first system update for the 3DS in 2021, Nintendo has now released the official patch notes. As expected, it's more "stability" improvements and some other minor adjustments to improve the overall experience.
Here are the official patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's support page:
Ver. 11.15.0-47U (July 26th, 2021)
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.
Here's a little extra about what might have changed from the Nintendo dataminer and Twitter user OatmealDome:
Original article [Tue 27th Jul, 2021 03:05 BST]: There's been a fair bit of 3DS news over the past week, and while it seems like certain services will could be ending soon, Nintendo's not done with the system updates just yet.
As revealed by the Nintendo customer support Twitter account for Japan, update Version 11.15.0-47 is now available.
Official patch notes aren't available here in the west just yhet, but when they are, we'll be sure to update this post.
This is the first update for the 3DS since November last year. Of course, it improved system stability and made some other "minor adjustments" to enhance the user experience.

And yet they still haven't removed the Miiverse icon from the Home menu.
@RupeeClock .. And why should they? Has it been discontinued?
@Fujimoto-San Yes, long ago.
@Fujimoto-San
...Yes? Launching the Miiverse icon on the 3DS Home Menu will just display a message that the service has been discontinued.
It would be better to remove the icon at the stage, but I suppose that they can't because some later 3DS games have Miiverse integration and they need some way to handle that.
@RupeeClock Is that so? I haven't used/checked or updated my 3DS in quite a while so I guess I was out of the loop. However I agree that removing the icon would be for the best. Now that I think about it I don't think I ever used that feature. Was it any good?
@rushiosan I see. Thank you.
Sorry Nintendo, my custom firmware is even more stable
Oh, i will update all my four 3DS XL machines (2 USA, 1 Japan, 1 PAL) tonight.
@WavedasherX CFW unaffected?
My 3ds was becoming so unstable, I was considering counseling for it. Thank you Nintendo!
Man not updating until I know if cfw is unaffected
It somehow behooves Nintendo to periodically issue stability updates for their obsolete hardware.
If your 3DS is modded is this going to brick it?
@Fujimoto-San The service has its moments. It would have been great during COVID, but it was already long gone. Nintendo is always late or early to the party.
@RupeeClock don't remove the icon! Homebrew scene wants to bring it back!
@faint A shame. I would have liked to have tried it at least once. It seems Nintendo isn't the only one late to the party ha ha!
@Zeldafan79 @NinChocolate mine worked fine after updating.
Can they stabilize the secondhand market while they're at it
@Anti-Matter Wait so how can I update but still keep my 3ds modded ?
@RupeeClock it is linked to game services so even though the miiverse isn’t working no longer it is probably not removed to cause issues with games
This makes me happy to see continuing support. I know the update is nothing major but the 3DS is evergreen to me. Long live 3DS!
@Aozz101x thanks for the heads up!
@AstroNomad I think he's saying that because he's against cfw overall. I hear that all the update does is patch some browser exploits that allowed people to install cfw. You should be fine if you already have cfw installed. However, it's better to wait some time and read up on the effects of the update as it only has been a couple of hours. The 3ds already works absolutely fine without the newest update, and I doubt online is affected in any way by it. There really is not a lot of reason for you to update really. The only reason it even exists is to patch Amy vulnerabilities that may allow users to install cfw (which will likely be circumvented in a very short time, but at least Nintendo can say they tried).
@Anti-Matter You can mod hardware you own, and it doesn’t make people lesser for doing so. There’s no need to get rude about it.
This is also untrue; currently installed CFW works just fine, though apparently the update changed the method for installing CFW and the “main” guide will be updated shortly, according to the homebrew Discord.
@Cr4shMyCar
All my four 3DS XL from three different regions are Original. All my 3DS games collection are also legit cartridges with boxes.
I don't want to mod my 3DS machines with CFW.
@Anti-Matter Alright, then don’t. Nobody’s forcing you to. I love the extra flexibility and customization that CFW allows for. I don’t know why you’re being rude and spreading misinformation.
@Cr4shMyCar
I wasn't rude.
Nintendo will not play nice with piracy so i assumed the newest update will probably brick the modded 3DS.
@Anti-Matter CFW =/= Piracy
Hope they fixed swapnote now and then saying an update is avail yet when to download it it gives an error message.
Tbh tge only thing I dislike is the fact that I can't play Link to the past on a normal 3ds i need a new 3ds which I dont feel like getting
Removed - unconstructive; user is banned
@Anti-Matter wouldn't brick the device just might make homebrew unavailable until the modes one up ninte do again haha
I was this close to finally pulling the trigger on CFW on my 2DS. Now I am glad I did not risk it.
@SwankyKong64
I will update all my four 3DS XL tonight.
@Caryslan if you install a CFW made after 2017, one of the first steps is always setting up a thing that prevents official system updates from removing it and/or it resulting in a bricking. If you're TOO paranoid, you can install the CFW next to your original firmware.
@Anti-Matter i do not feel like buying a Japanese 3DS to play out of region games, and I cannot live without Super Robot Taisen. CFW is the least cumbersome way to do so.
@Noelemahc
I have around 30 Japanese exclusive 3DS games on my list (already got 8 Japanese 3DS games so far) and i bought New 3DS LL Japan in November 2018.
I keep my statement to play with Original things even i have to buy another 3DS machine with different regions and No CFW in my gaming rules.
Official patch notes aren't available here in the west just yhet.
What's the definition for yhet? Can Nintendolife use a spell-checker? Yhet?
I feel now it is stable enough for me to finally buy one.
@Anti-Matter
Same here mate! I have 4 3ds systems. 3 pal (3ds Og, 3ds xl and New 3ds xl) and 1 Us New 3ds xl Samus edition model to play the 20 ntsc 3ds games that I have in my collection. I have More than 120 3ds (pal-ntsc) games, always physical, always legit!
Is it worth a Japanese 3ds console? Are enough japan exclusives games that are playable without knowing the language?
@Anti-Matter if @Zeldafan79 wants to mod his own property, it's up to him. I wouldn't install a firmware update though.
@Guile
Very worthy for me.
I can read Hiragana and Katakana words with a few Kanji words. I understand a little Japanese language but i have recognized some basic Japanese words in video games.
The Japanese 3DS games i wrote on my list are mostly games by Nippon Columbia (games for girls audiences, kinda like Imagine series but with semi chibi looking characters and real Japanese voices. The series played role as nurse / amateur mangaka / newbie beautician / pet shop assistant / newbie chef / etc), Yokai Watch 3 Tempura / Sushi / Sukiyaki (i got Tempura since Yokai Watch 3 English version are nowhere to be founded), Yokai Watch Sangokushi, Yokai Watch Busters 2 Magnum / Sword, AKB48 + Me (Mii game about being new AKB48 member with practice schedules, mini games like from TV show, rhythm game with official AKB48 song), JS Girl Doki Doki Model Challege (kinda like Style Savvy but focusing on model posing with pose cards), Pet to Kurasou (kinda like Nintendogs but with a lot of different small animals such as cat, hedgehog, rabbit, hamster, duck, etc. Again, by Nippon Columbia too), Sumikko Gurashi games (One of Sanrio-X games on 3DS and Switch), Maho Cole: Maho Idol Collection (Rhythm adventure game with cute chibi characters and anthro animals like Animal Crossing).
@Zeldafan79 > If your 3DS is modded is this going to brick it?
Yes. That's what stability means.
@BreathingMiit exactly, it will turn into a brick that will allow you to build a stable house xD
@Caryslan Honestly if you don't update the 3DS you should be fine. When you follow the main guides for cfw you end up installing particular updater apps. These are useful for when Nintendo releases an update to block homebrew, as modders would develop a counterpatch that once installed would allow you to update safely. This is a common thing that happens every year or so. Also there is no requirement to update at all so if you ignore it you should be fine for the most part.
@Fujimoto-San the mileage may have varied on Miiverse as with everything else, but it did double as the console's only native screenshot tool. Of course, you could only see and share them on Miiverse itself, but at least users were eventually allowed to export them all before shutdown.
@ZeldaFan79 do you really have the need to update a modded console in the first place?🤔
trying to think of something witty to say but I'm really out of phrases over here, sorry
@Abeedo once a year is a bit off, there where 3 or more in 2018
4 in 2019
1 in 2020
1 so far in 2021
if it is down to just once a year, it means they mostly given up on trying to stop people from hacking their 2/3ds's(though its not like they where ever really able to stop it to begin with)
Pretty sneaky of Nintendo doing this, glad I homebrewed my 3ds when i did, no loss from me 👍👍🙂
@Caryslan well there will be a new method out soon just watch.
@Anti-Matter
Considering the amount of crap Nintendo still hasn't done for the 3DS, it makes perfect sense why people would want to mod it.
Not everyone bought the 3DS at launch, so they can't gain access to the GBA games locked to Ambassadors.
Not everyone bought the New 3DS models, so they can't gain access to SNES games.
Not everyone downloaded limited-time content like Four Swords Anniversary Edition.
I hope you realize that while modding a console is unethical towards Nintendo, it's the sacrifice people have to make if they want to be able to play more games. The 3DS is a pretty flawed console without mods.
@ModdedInkling
"Not everyone bought the 3DS at launch, so they can't gain access to the GBA games locked to Ambassadors.
Not everyone bought the New 3DS models, so they can't gain access to SNES games.
Not everyone downloaded limited-time content like Four Swords Anniversary Edition."
I don't even care with those bold things above.
I wish 3DS was not region lock but i will not modding my 3DS machines with illegal way whatsoever reasons.
I don't even think it was right way to do.
This is obviously an attempt to stop hackers from modding their console, though it is now long dead and they should focus on the Switch instead. If they didn't make any kind of big changes (and they don't have a reason to anyway), then the "minor adjustments" aren't meant to fix bugs or whatever, only to prevent mods. This once again shows that, as a company, they're completely out of touch. Hackers always find a way to make their way back in their systems.
@nhSnork p sure the Internet Browser, at least on 3DS, has a shortcut to upload screens to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, though I think at least one of those had been removed at some point?
@lifepsychedelic
Why did you have to tell me you want to mod your 3DS machines ?
It will not change my statement to keep my 3DS machines stay Original.
@Anti-Matter
Look, I already acknowledged that it wasn't the right thing to do, but what other choice do those people have? It's not like emulating those games on other platforms, PC, or mobile is any better, and it certainly looks like Nintendo isn't ever going to re-release those games anymore.
If this was the Switch, I'm 100% on board with you. Modding consoles isn't right, especially when Nintendo put a lot of work into it. But with the 3DS, a console with several scummy limitations, it's bound to happen.
No one's telling you to mod your console and no one's trying to disrespect your opinion on it. If other people are doing it, then just tolerate it. It doesn't hurt you in any way and if they get caught by Nintendo, they're the ones facing the consequences.
Should had just make the 3DS region free now Nintendo, at this point there's no reason to continue purposely blocking region compatibility. I say purposely cause through an exploit you could play other region's 3DS games just fine.
I miss MiiVerse. That was one of the coolest things Nintendo ever came up with, so of course they discontinued it and never bothered with any sort of replacement.
@Anti-Matter nobody really cares if you don't want to mod yours. Do it if you want, if you don't then don't. Nobody is forcing you to and being rude to others who wish to mod theirs is unnecessary. Grow up man, your adding nothing to this except being disrespectful to those who wish to mod the console they purchased with their own money. If it's not yours, don't worry about it its literally none of your business
@FluffiestP1llow
Pardon, telling me to grow up ? 🤨
(Ignore button pressed)
Adios.
@Anti-Matter Modifying something that you own is not illegal. You have your 3DSs from different regions; let us have our CFW and homebrew apps. You’re not converting anyone over to your side by yelling about how CFW is evil and how you have a massive game collection.
Just updated all my five 3ds consoles and put them back away in a box
@Cr4shMyCar
Oh, well...
I will not changing my mind.
I have updated my New 3DS XL USA version just now.
Still another 3 machines to be updated.
@TJF588 TIL, but I was talking official methods anyway. This, similarly to that one rumoured way to browse the internet via Switch's screenshot sharing tools (an ironic reversal, heh), sounds like too much hassle.
Unexpected and I was about to hack console to be able stream with it, now I be waiting longer.
With this update, I might pass on putting CFW on my only 2DS.
The good news is that if I want to play GBA games, I have my PSP that is still a little trooper who is up to the job.
@Zeldafan79
Probably yes
@Anti-Matter
If it makes you feel any better, I'm still holding off on modding both of my 3DS XLs and I don't have any sort of reason to mod mines because I already have consoles that play the other games.
@Anti-Matter I respect that. Honestly, you are one of the few who use your 3DS the way it's supposed to be used. With 3DS soft modding guides, even a child can mod their 3DS. It's simple, but there's so much more meaning when owning the actual games, perhaps it's from a collector's mentality, but you shouldn't be judged incorrect or even be recommended to mod your console.
Let's face it, when people softmod their 3DS it's to play pirated games. Some say they only do it for the extra perks and not for piracy, but that's not true. It's for both, with the vast majority modding for piracy. I also consider emulating without ownership of the original game piracy. I don't get why people are debating with you anyway. Your method of gaming is correct. You live by the standards you set for yourself, and despite knowing about modding and the perks it offers, you won't bend. If anything, you should be getting praise.
This is my opinion at least. I understand that others believe differently, also I'm not telling modders that they shouldn't mod their consoles. I just believe you shouldn't be pressing it on others.
Nintendo, have you removed the Miiverse icon yet or is that too much work for you?
@Fujimoto-San
Miiverse were very popular on Wii U. There were freebies there from developers like Steam PC version of a game if you paid for Wii U version first, competitions, graphic competitions with the Wii U paint app, early news on patches, game news and whatever.
Also. Lots of Indies stayed in touch with Wii U users there directly. Miiverse were probably the most used Wii U feature.
Miiverse were a big loss for Switch.
.
So freaky to see the Spotpass light turn on again for this reason. Might be the last time that blue light goes on.
[Insert stability joke here]
@RupeeClock just remove the icon but keep the system code for the miiverse there so games can run it if they need
I love my Switch but I also love my 3DS. Currently Playing Devil Survivor and The fantastic 1994 Donkey Kong!
I am prefer not to Mod my consoles, but I get why people do it. Modding or not modding is preference, there is no right answer nor is there a wrong answer.
@Anti-Matter with a installed CFW after I can use it to backup my digital games and extract DS games (than I discover it's possible to install and make they look like a original 3DS game, with it own icon, that's wonderful for me). CFW is like a fail-safe for who prefer digital. It's risky someday Nintendo make a update that anyone will bother to crack and after the servers are close, if anything happens with your console, you will lost everything, the official backup only work on the same console. That way I'd may be able to buy other system and install everything again, even my backed up savegames. It's not my case, but for who like to play games that the language is a wall, you can install a language patch on your games. There are a lot of "joys" with CFW, even without going to piracy
@RCGamer
I have no interest at all to think about CFW, modding, etc. Sorry.
@FluffiestP1llow Lol he needs to grow up even outside that. I started out thinking he was a great member of the community and respected his devotion to rhythm games but he’s worn on me massively. He’s a bizarre kind of Puritan towards violence in specific and tells everyone that anything not made for little children is “a poison that corrupts everything pure”. He’s in his late 30’s by the way. He literally won’t play some rhythm games because they feature songs from anime made for adults. He also said he was disgusted by Astros Playroom and will never touch it because it features a cameo from an adorable robot Kratos and other references to non E rated games. He pushes these beliefs aggressively onto everyone here, not to mention constantly flexing about how great he is for only playing games physically 100% the way Nintendo wants. Like, I understand wanting full ownership of your games and being a collector, but do you need to tell everybody EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE that has anything to do with digital games?
Edit: I got 3 likes at the end of a comment chain so it seems other people are fed up too.
@Anti-Matter Modding a Nintendo 3DS isn't illegal. Nintendo can whine all they want and say it's illegal, just like with emulation, Modding a console isn't illegal.
@Dbzfinal2
Could you please stop talking about modding 3DS to me ?
I don't understand some peoples reacted negative toward me for my choice to play with Original devices and games, not thinking about CFW or modding.
I mean, there is a new update for 3DS from Nintendo.
Of course i will be happy to update all my 3DS machines.
@Anti-Matter You... said it was illegal. I don't want people to think somethings illegal when it isn't. You don't have to, your choice. Your opinion. But if somebody says something thats false, I have to point that out. Im not hating on you by doing that.
@Goat_FromBOTW Enjoy your fourth!
The majority of players mod their 3ds's to play the games for free. That's for sure. This also happened from Psone era Ps2 gamecube etc.. Back then they used pirated cds for dirty cheap. Now the time has changed. From the Ds era all the games in one card for free. If all the gamers do that, then the gaming industry is over. So leave @Anti-Matter, me and few others gamers to buy the games normally(and physically) and do what you want to do.
I play all the retro games(nes, snes, n64, gamecube) on my original consoles on a crt tv and not on a mod 3ds or wii u.
@Anti-Matter
The reason everyone is responding directly to you, is because you are trying to push your view of (not)modding to others by spreading lies.
Someone asked if the update would brick their 3DS if modded, you said "yes" while it isn't true. Then you say it is illegal, while it isn't. Piracy though, is illegal.
I respect that you do not mod yours, but do not spread misinformation because you do not want others to do what they want. That is what basically is what people have issues with and do not respect about your behavior here.
@Goat_FromBOTW exactly. Have strange beliefs for certain games, like the Astros playroom example is fine, it's just that he pushes his beliefs as 100% factual and anyone who believes otherwise is just wrong. He doesn't want to mod his 3ds, and thats perfectly fine I personally don't want to mod mine, but I don't go pushing the idea that if you mod your 3ds your a terrible person. It away I generally avoid his comments on here because he usually doesn't add anything to the topic
@Anti-Matter it is not illegal to mod tho. Why do you think that. Just because you and Nintendo don’t like it does not mean it’s illegal.
I don't know why some peoples keep defending about using CFW as a legal way.
When Nintendo released an update , that means Nintendo want to prevent the hacking, piracy and illegal modding.
So whoever keep calling modding the machine with CFW as not illegal way to do, then why did Nintendo have to release an update ?
Support the games company by purchase their legit products, not by using CFW / homebrew to play the pirated games.
It will make the games company going bankrupt.
If you still persistent with modding and CFW..... Whatever.
I'm speechless.
Nintendo is as much allowed to patch things out as the customer wants to mod their products. Legal is from the point of the law and the law doesn't prohibit either way.
It is now clear that your opinion is that no one should mod their consoles and you are not agreeing with it being legal while it is. That doesn't change the way it is though.
You seem a little black and white on this topic, I own forty legal games, all newly bought. Still I modded my 3DS.
One of the best features unlocked because of it, is to be able to run high clock/L2 mode on all games on my new 3DS XL. Finally Rayman 3D runs like it should, was a bloody slideshow without that clock/L2 mode.
Nintendo should indeed get paid, but they also should fix certain issues, which they do not, so I fix those myself on my own legally bought hardware.
That is what I legally choose to do, if you do not want to go that route, all fine with me.
But again, do not spread misinformation just out of spite and only to try and get your way. That is an immature and a non constructive way of discussing.
Doing that will make people distrust you and will only be counter productive to what you are trying to achieve.
@Anti-Matter
You should check Theatrythm Dragon Quest if you are fan of the series.
Also if you understand the japanese language you can go for Super Robot Taisen Ux and Bx. And of course Many more exclusives Japan Rpgs.
You are very Lucky to understand at least some Japanese words.
I have also some Japanese exclusive games for Nintendo consoles but I struggle to understand what's going on.
@Anti-Matter
Exactly!! Keep supporting the gaming industry by buying legit games.
That's why I have pre ordered Andro Dunos II 3ds from pixelheart. I love 3ds console and stereoscopic 3d and this game contains the 3d effect. I supported pixelheart as it would bring some more games on the 3ds console in the near future! That is the way to support a game company and not the mod of the console!
So guys, if you if you love your 3ds console and the shmups genre pre order the game!
@Goat_FromBOTW
Pardon, are you talking bad about me ?
(Ignore button pressed)
Adios.
@NinChocolate That’s what I wanna know 😆
@Anti-Matter Nintendo will not go bankrupt because I play homebrew Doom lmfao
Done.
I have updated All my four 3DS XL machines. 😀
Okay guys he updated all 4 of his 3ds xl machines, maybe he'll shut up about it finally
@Fujimoto-San Been living under a rock?
Queria saber se o moleque chato do Anti-Matter já atualizou as 4 máquinas dele..
Porque caramba ele falou que ia fazer isso umas 5x, afffff achei que gente assim era exclusividade daqui onde moro!!!
@Virbickas
Boa noite.
I will speak in English.
I got all four 3DS XL from my local store.
I bought Old 3DS XL USA in November 2013, New 3DS XL USA in February 2017, New 3DS LL Japan in November 2018, New 3DS XL PAL in June 2020 (the only used 3DS XL i got). All of them 100% Original.
Well, i have a job as school librarian but my salary is enough to buy those machines. My dream have comes true to able owning 3 different 3DS XL.
Well done @Anti-Matter!!
These are the 3ds consoles that I have:
1)Zelda (Ocarina of time) 3ds Og Pal (pre ordered)
2) Zelda Link between worlds 3ds Xl Pal (pre ordered)
3)Zelda Majoras mask New 3ds Xl Pal (pre ordered)
4)Samus edition New 3ds Xl Ntsc (New, bought in november 2020)
And I am looking forward for a New 3ds Xl japan version.(I will be glad if I find a collector's system like monster Hunter or Super Famicom or something else).
Also I have more than 125 3ds games in my collection, everything physical!!
@Zeldafan79 As far as I can tell, no. So far my 3DS seems to be working fine.
