Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (10th May)

Bex_Tries

A lot of gaming with my partner and my siblings this week. Super Mario Party Jamboree, Guilty Gear Strive and some F-Zero-X, great fun.

For solo gaming, continuing my playthrough of Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness and the Secret Hideout. Still fun, spent much of my time doing side quests and alchemy, with a minor amount of main story progression thrown in! About 20 hours into it now.

Made significant progress in going through the DLC story for The House in Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence. Into Part 2 of this prequel story. One touching scene and the accompanying music had me in some tears at one point, this visual novel just keeps getting to me.

I'm also a couple hours into Alan Wake Remastered. The introduction scenes and storytelling had me hooked immediately, even if not my usual genre in terms of gameplay. Struggling a little with combat, but getting through it slowly so far.

Mainly playing Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout. I'm about 10 hours into it, still really enjoying the cozy vibes and getting to grips with the alchemy mechanics. Nothing too taxing in the main story progression, barring one early fight where I discovered that creating the best possible armor through alchemy was a key part of being fully prepared for battle!

Still dabbling in Final Fantasy X-2 but not been overly motivated to play it for more than short bursts. I'll continue with it though, even if at a slow pace.

Actually completed one of my side games at last! Afterparty, by the Oxenfree devs Night School, was a really fun 6-7 hours. Always had me engaged, and even laughing aloud quite a few times. Nothing special but certainly got my value for money after picking up in a sale.

After seeing the list of Switch games that might not work on the Switch 2, there was only one game present that was part of my backlog. Therefore, I'm also starting Alan Wake Remastered to get most/all of it done by early June.

After about 2 1/2 months and 220 hours, finally finished Persona 5 Royal, exceptional game and brilliant storytelling/characters.

The plan was to begin Xenoblade Chronicles 3, but have decided to wait until my Switch 2 arrives and starting it on the new console.

So, in the meantime, double-dipping into my RPG backlog and have started both Final Fantasy X-2 and Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness and the Secret Hideout.

FFX2 might take some getting used to, not overly sold so far on the first couple hours on the direction it has gone. Combat seems interesting though.

On the other hand, loving Atelier Ryza so far, loving the exploration and gathering gameplay loops, very chill and enjoyable. Looks fantastic as well. First time playing a game in this series and think I'm going to be a fan!

Also carrying on other active games in small doses: Afterparty, House in Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence and The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy (demo).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (12th April)

Still playing through Persona 5 Royal! It sure is a long game haha, but no complaints, it has been outstanding. I know that I'm wrapping up the final stretch now though, might even be finished before the end of today. Fantastic experience that started strong but only got better and better as the side stories and character arcs all played out and paid off during the second half. It absolutely deserves it's lofty reputation, for me.

I've been so focused on Persona, that the other games being played on the side have mostly taken a backseat for the past few weeks. I did, however, spend an hour or so with each of Afterparty and The House in Fata Morgana DLC: A Requiem for Innocence. Good to get an eye back into the story for each, enjoying both a lot.

One other thing I did do, was download the demo for The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. Really enjoyed the setup during the opening hour, so much so that I think I will be purchasing this when it comes out later this month! Good job demo, you did your job well in that respect!

On a slightly gaming-related note, after 13 years of great service, my sturdy old 42" television has finally been replaced with a snazzy new 50". Thought it was time for an upgrade for when the Switch 2 arrives soon. Nice to be rid of all the screen burn too. Enjoy the weekend, all.

Re: UK Charts: Old Favourites Keep Nintendo In The Race As Xenoblade Plummets From Top 10

Bex_Tries

@Spider-Kev Always cool to see how different opinions are on the Xenoblade Chronicles games as a whole, and the mechanics/combat

Loved the combat in XC1DE, but much preferred that of XC2, personally, to the extent that it's my fave combat I've played in gaming overall now (and indeed, my fave game of all time too hehe).

Starting XC3 for the first time shortly, as soon as Persona 5 Royal is complete, so will be excited to see what the combat has in store this time around! Great to have the full series available for those of us still catching up 😁

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (22nd March)

Bex_Tries

Progress in gaming has been a little slow the last couple weeks due to some socialising!

Mainly just been progressing with my first ever playthrough of Persona 5 Royal. Palace number 4 completed, somewhere between that and the next major section (about to go on the Hawaii trip). The story is really growing on me the more it expands, think the latter stages are going to be very strong!

Played more of Afterparty as well. Mentioned last time that I was interested to see where I land on it given some polarising opinions. I'm a few hours in now and still finding the dialogue fantastic. Had some legitimate laugh-out-loud moments which is rare for me, and overall enjoying the writing and working through the plot.

The rest, no progress. Will be continuing to try and collect all strawberries in Celeste, with visual novel House in Fata Morgana DLC, and with learning Guilty Gear Strive.

Have purchased my physical copy of Xenoblade Chronicles X, but won't get to that for a while, as I'll be playing through XC3 before I get to that one. That will get started after Persona 5

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (8th March)

Bex_Tries

@Vriess Personally, depending on the games, I'll have a main game, usually a big JRPG, then a couple other smaller scale games when taking a break from it. Sometimes though, I can end up with a half-dozen on the go in some capacity, as it is right now.

In terms of available time, I do tend to have a solid amount of free time with my 3 days off work a week. My partner and I have no children so responsibilities are indeed quite minimal with only a small cat requiring much attention! We share the same hobbies, so on many of our days off, it's gaming on the sofa with two TVs on the go, sometimes all weekend!

We've got other hobbies too outside of gaming, mainly sports as big American Football fans in particular, but gaming is definitely the one to which most free time is devoted to. I'll admit we do have a comfortable easy-going existence, know that not everyone is as fortunate and certainly don't take it for granted. I hope you get some time to enjoy relaxing, gaming or otherwise, in the near future

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (8th March)

Bex_Tries

Primary game currently is Persona 5 Royal. Finished the 3rd palace and summer exams, while also completing as far as I can with quests and exploration in Mementos. The soundtrack always gets rightly praised but the English voice cast is fantastic as well. Ryuji's character and VA has me grinning and laughing consistently!

Last weekend I completed Celeste, which blew me away, an instant top ten all-time game for me, despite never being a big platformer fan. Continued with it this weekend to complete missing strawberries and to work through the post-game content.

Started Afterparty (by Night School, makers of the Oxenfree games). Have seen polarising opinions on this one, but so far, the writing has impressed and really enjoying the opening couple of hours, will see how that progresses.

Didn't get to it this weekend, but early on in the DLC/bonus content for The House in Fata Morgana. The main game had me captivated for around 55 hours, and the early parts of "A Requiem for Innocence" seems to be just as gripping.

Played more of Guilty Gear: Strive as well, completed another run with my favourite character Slayer, completed a few dojo missions, and experimented in training with Testament.

Only other active game is Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Recently completed Ocarina of Time and dove into the follow up immediately after for an hour or so. Will need to give it a proper go soon, but this was not the weekend for it unfortunately!

Re: Nintendo Highlights Four Brand New Games "Coming Soon" To Switch

Bex_Tries

@EarthboundBenjy We have both similar tastes in genre and in process there! I do very similar, with lengthy RPGs for the most part, but with the smaller pallet cleanser games either during or in-between.

In the last few months, have gone from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, to Dragon Quest XI, to Secret of Mana, to Persona 5 Royal. And in that same period have played shorter experiences including Celeste, Gris, Far: Lone Sails.

Glad to hear that Fantasian: Neo Dimension was great! Just picked that up as well recently, though might be a while before getting to it. Up next will be Xenoblade 3, Octopath Traveller 2, then one of Xenoblade X, Atelier Ryza or Fire Emblem 3 Houses.

In terms of this article, Xenoblade Chronicles X in on pre-order! Probably the only one I'll pick up of the four

Re: Review: Guilty Gear -Strive- Nintendo Switch Edition (Switch) - A Fine Port & A Bold New Step

Bex_Tries

Thanks for the review, glad to see it got one as this is such an outstanding port and game overall. As a complete fighting game novice (outside of a little Tekken 3 way back when), had the itch to try out the genre, especially after watching EVO last year. Guilty Gear Strive stood out among the games showcased, so was pleased when this was announced for Switch, picked it up Day 1. Also gave Accent Core a shot when it was on sale super cheap earlier.

As a bit of a beginner of very limited skill, it was a breeze to pick up and get the hang of. The Dojo missions and super helpful to teach mechanics, and would highly recommend starting there. Picked up Giovanna fairly quickly and had played Slayer a little in Accent Core.

The aesthetics are superb, the battles seamless, the options and modes impressive. Only looked at the online setup once, and found myself in an empty room. Hopefully that will have changed when I try again this weekend. Glad others are enjoying it so far too!

Re: Feature: Citizen Sleeper Dev Talks Sequels, Stress, And Creating "My Own Take On The Mass Effect Series"

Bex_Tries

Fantastic read and insight, thanks! Really enjoyed playing through the first Citizen Sleeper, only did one run through it and would love to do a second before this is out. Definitely going to be picking up Citizen Sleeper 2. I don't think it was mentioned in this piece, but the music and overall audio did an amazing job of building atmosphere and mood, excited to see how that gets built on or expanded in the sequel.

Re: Community: What Are Your Favourite Sidequests On Switch?

Bex_Tries

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has some outstanding side quest content that substantially expanded upon and surpassed those of the first game. Not only were many of them in multiple stages, some, like the unique blade side quests, spanned through much of the length of the game itself.

One standout for me was for the blade Electra. She struggled to control her lightning powers and her confidence suffers as a result. She spends the rest of the game looking to help many of the people in Alrest while mastering her abilities, with the help and encouragement of the rest of the party.

It all builds to a conclusion late in the game that actually got quite emotional during the accompanying cut scene. Adding to the personal enjoyment of this side quest, Electra was the first blade added to my team early in the game so the side quest kicked off early and played out periodically alongside the main quest stories. Though not a great blade to use in battle, she still got called into combat action from time to time, in large part just to being a great character.

Between completing as much side quest content as possible, completing blade affinity charts and their individual side quest storylines, it's no surprised I piled up 330 hours in just one playthrough of that game!

Re: Your 'Nintendo Switch Year In Review 2024' Stats Are Available Now

Bex_Tries

@themightyant I did not get all blades sadly, I tried for a while though! I'm a slow player in general so the hours did pile up, but I do explore every corner of every area that I can, which takes time. And all blades I had, which was most, I took the time to 100% all of their affinity charts, which took a while! If I didn't have so many other games to play, would have no issue starting again and playing another 300 hours haha. Agreed on the music, I'll be walking down the aisle at my upcoming wedding to a song from XC2, so there's that! ("A Place in the Sun", if you were interested)

Re: Your 'Nintendo Switch Year In Review 2024' Stats Are Available Now

Bex_Tries

@themightyant Incredible games, profound and perspective-altering, honestly. I feel like an overall more positive person in life afterwards! The first two games have instantly vaulted into first and second on my all time favourite games.

Really enjoyed Future Redeemed, took an hour or two to get going but really took off and hit emotionally in moments, some fun gameplay twists from the main game. I'll be starting the XC2 Torna DLC in January, excited for that! Then 3, then X, can't wait. But yeah, replaying them is something I'm looking forward too as well eventually.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (29th June)

Bex_Tries

Playing Cassette Beasts all weekend. Blown away by how fun and creative this game is. About 30 hours deep at this point. The map that at first glance doesn't seem huge, ends up having so much to explore within it, densely packed with side quests and things to see. Well worth getting into this one. As an avid Pokémon fan, I'd put this above most Pokémon games I've played, it's that enjoyable!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (22nd June)

Bex_Tries

Picked up The House in Fata Morgana in the recent sale. A number of hours into it now, and the story has me utterly captivated so far. Seems like it will fully deliver on its high reputation.

Continuing with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. With the combat figured out and about 40 hours deep, it truly is starting to rival the first Xenoblade game, which I didn't think would be possible. What a stunning game it is, on many levels.

Also playing Rune Factory 4 very slowly, as I'm playing it in German to try and help with learning the language. Every conversation is a lengthy ordeal so far haha, but persevering with the challenge

Have a great weekend all.

Re: Danganronpa Creators Are Apparently In Debt Over New Switch Game

Bex_Tries

Unfortunate, but hopefully it sells well and pays off for them. This was one of the top 3 or 4 announcements for me from the Direct, will definitely be buying this one when it's out. Looks fantastic. Seen plenty of enthusiasm around for it among people and communities I frequent, hope that's a good sign. Keen to see more from the game nearer the time!

Re: Anniversary: Mario Golf On N64 Is Now 25 Years Old

Bex_Tries

I know Super Rush wasn't a big hit for a lot of people but it's one I've ended up getting a lot of value from 🙂 It's become our go-to game to play online with my brother and sister across various countries and on the Discord call. The multiplayer has been a blast with lots of laughs while chatting away. 30 hours racked up and a lot more that will be added to that too! Definitely far from perfect but enjoyed it a lot. If they keep releasing them over the next 25 years, will continue to play more Mario Golf!

Re: Nintendo's eShop Summer Sale Knocks Up To 75% Off Select Switch Titles (Europe)

Bex_Tries

@Kidfunkadelic83 I played Civ 2 back in the day, a big favourite as a kid. There's definitely a lot to take in and I'm bracing for a lot of stuff I haven't seen since Civ 4 I think was the last I tried. Hopefully with some easier difficulty settings and nostalgia-driven perseverance it will hopefully hit the spot for me Understand that it wouldn't be for everyone though for sure. At least at such a low price, I won't feel too bad if I similarly struggle!

Re: Nintendo's eShop Summer Sale Knocks Up To 75% Off Select Switch Titles (Europe)

Bex_Tries

Other wishlist games I'll consider:
Abzu £3.74
Deleveled £2.94
Thumper £6.39
The House of Fata Morgana £22.04
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc £5.39
Cosmic Star Heroine £7.69
Pentiment £8.99
Spyro Trilogy £13.99
What Remains of Edith Finch £4.49
Paranormasight £9.59

Would love to hear what games others are considering. Can sometimes be tricky to search through the store with so much packed in there!

Re: Tabletop-Inspired RPG 'Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector' Will Land On Switch Next Year

Bex_Tries

Very excited to see this will be on Switch! The first Citizen Sleeper was one of the best games I played last year, and know that I barely scratched the surface of the potential narrative options and other endings.

Will have another run through of the original prior to this one coming out. Looks to be a lot of similarities carrying over but some interesting new twists as well. The new area to explore sounds potentially daunting but exciting. Even though the first was on one station, there was still so much to explore within it. Can't wait!
