It must be said, a good infographic can go a long way. While issuing statistics and numbers can make eyes droop and lose attention, if you place some key statistics with some pretty graphics the message can be a lot clearer; Nintendo's keen to make just that point.
An infographic tweeted by Nintendo of America states that the Wii U and 3DS share more highly rated games than all other current generation systems; we're taking that current-gen statistic to mean PS4, Xbox One and PS Vita. Even accounting for the fact that the latest home consoles from Sony and Microsoft have had just a year on the market, there are an impressive number of 3DS and — particularly — Wii U games that have a metacritic score of 85%+ and an average user score of 8.5 or more. User scores on Metacritic are notoriously punishing, so it's a surprising statistic.
You can see the infographic below.
It's certainly worth remembering that there are some terrific games on the Wii U and 3DS, even if Nintendo is naturally going for the best angle and spin possible. It is all about the games, remember.

I have to say, this is quite interesting with them including third-party titles on the list.
What makes Nintendo so special is that almost every game on their list is exclusive to their hardware ( Rayman and Bayonetta excluded ). I'm curious how many out of the other 8 games are muliplats.
@shigulicious Isn't Virtue's Last Reward on the Vita? Other than those I think the rest are exclusive.
And no Donkey Kong tropical freeze! God that game needs some love!
It's cheating to have Bayonetta 1+2 separate, and cheating to have Pokemon X/Y separate. >
What else would "current generation" be, if not the ones listed?
You really can make statistics say whatever you want them to. But Nintendo didn't have to play with the numbers TOO much in this case; their games really are the best.
I bought Luigi's Mansion 3DS today ^-^.
@TobiasAmaranth No cheating for Bayo 1 + 2, it makes the double pack even more worthwhile for people who realise they can get two great games for the price of just one.
@BLPs Opinions however, may vary. "Better" is a subjective (read: opinionated) term
@BLPs Yup, i think so too. Sadly, Nintendos "fair and nice guy" attitude is a reason for other companys to mock them. But please dont ask me why...
But this pretty much just shows "Look people, we have some great games, and a lot of people thought so too"
Nintendo may have a host of great, exclusive retail games on both systems now, but yet another eShop exclusive is about to feed Sony more digital sales.
I'd have bought a Vita for Shovel Knight (and Persona 4, Dragon's Crown, Muramasa Rebirth, Senran Kagura, Virtue's Last Reward, Ys Celceta and the next Ys, etc..) had I known it was a timed exclusive.
Going forward on the steam of Japanese devs, Vita looks much brighter than 3DS, which is getting into remake season with Xenoblade and Majora.
To be frank, the Final Fantasy X, X-2, Jak and Daxter, God of War and Sly Cooper remakes / collections are much more appealing. As are the smoother, more detailed, easier to play versions that are on both handhelds.
Hopefully, the enhanced 3DS helps Nintendo close the gap.
With the focus turning further toward the Wii U, I think the 3DS might be Nintendo's last dedicated handheld.
So.. kill both systems next year (retail wise) and drop the next system, a Fusion of both handheld and home console, in early 2016. Encourage indies to support with digital content that can be played on all 3. And for god's sake, Nintendo NEEDS to learn to build a significant online presence.
I hate online gaming (it's a convenient way for extroverted, poor people to meet new 'friends' and keep in touch with old ones) but it's undeniable Nintendo's rep has suffered by keeping gaming in the 80s for 30 years.
Very nice, I like how it's not full of itself like Sony likes to be All and all, Nintendo had a great year, so much in fact that people that I heard that didn't want a Wii U, rushed out and got one! I know I will be getting mine soon, and I can't wait!
Nintendo consoles might not get as many games as Microsoft and Sony, but I've never traded in a Nintendo game like I have a Sony or Microsoft games. Nintendo games I usually find I enjoy more and end up finishing and beating everything in their games, and go back to them time and time again, while Sony and Microsoft games I usually barely get through the story, then I either barely touch it again or I trade it in
Shots fired!
nintendo has launched thier nuke but i think they shoulda put kid icarus uprising on there because that game is amazing.
They've cheated by counting Pokémon X and Y separately, but they have received separate user reviews, so I suppose that may count for something.
Another great Ninteod graphic - can't believe they actually acknowledged other systems exist - that I will never see anywhere else but here. These are the kinds of postes they need to have hanging up on the walls of Gamestop and Walmart and TRU. "Great games, great exclusives, what more do you want?" Hows that for a marketing slogan?
@midnafanboy Yes, it does.
@rjejr i would say a dvd player or blu-ray but still but would be epic for dvd player.
@NodesforNoids
"To be frank, the Final Fantasy X, X-2, Jak and Daxter, God of War and Sly Cooper remakes / collections are much more appealing."
As somebody who likes his Vita a fair bit, please, please do not list awful ports like the Jak and Daxter and God of War Collections alongside other recommendations. When they chug along at around 20fps on average, sometimes lower; and have to compensate for the lack of appropriate controls with somewhat confusing rear touch-pad mapping, they're hardly the best examples of great remakes for the system. In other words, much like the recent Borderlands 2 port - which is borderline unplayable in my experience; they're hardly the best advertisement of the system's capabilities.
I do have to agree, though, as a European who only recently purchased Shovel Knight; had I known it was coming to the PS Vita in a matter of months, I'd have likely skipped the 3DS and Wii U versions.
@edgedino Yeah, it should be there. But I think they didn't include it because it is relatively old now. I haven't seen a copy on store shelves in quite some time.
I would like to play all those games in this infographic, besides Pokémon X, Wind Waker HD (cleared 100% the original) and Animal Crossing. From that list I just own Ocarina of Time 3D, Pokémon Y and Smash 3DS
I wish I could have more money... hehehehe
@Porky Congratulations. Seriously. I say this with zero sarcasm. You won't be disappointed.
Well with this graphic they've convinced all of us who already own a Wii U, 3DS, and most of these games how brilliant we already knew these games were.
I somehow doubt it will convince the COD/FIFA crowd though....
This graphic has convinced me (a guy who owns both consoles) to go buy eight more Wii u's and eleven more 3ds' so I can play these all at once.
IMHO they should've put The Wonderful 101 instead of Ubisoft's Rayman Legends.
@Omarpixel9 There is no "they should have put x" when a game simply doesn't qualify.
It's a great list, but why not make this a TV commercial? The people that will see this already have a Wii U. Get the message out to the people not following you on Twitter, Nintendo!
Great infographic though they should be busy dealing with their stock issues. For example, there's no point in including Pikmin 3 on that list if you can't even find the game anywhere to buy!
Bayonetta 1+2 isn't cheating, but X and Y is
And when you think about the fact that the most highly reviewed games from the other systems are remakes of games 1-2 years old, this packs an even greater punch.
I think maybe they should have only gone for the user-score - Lord knows DK nad 101 needs some love!
"it's a convenient way for extroverted, poor people to meet new 'friends' and keep in touch with old ones" ......way to sound like a spoilt rich kid in one sentence!! No Offence but your dissing almost all the users of the internet with that one mate, might want to re think that attitude while you still have friends!?!
Virtues last reward is on the list but not professor layton? That is really amusing.
Nintendo know it's all about the games, it's why I stick with them even through the rough times.
I don't have a PS4 and Xbox One (getting them next year).
With that said, I've been more than happy with my Wii U and 3DS. Bayonetta 2 was my personal GOTY, and I often think of the console as a 'GCN 2.0' (low sales, but consistently awesome games).
Next year is going to be even better: Zelda U, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Maker, Starfox, Splatoon, Kirby, Majora's Mask, Codename S.T.E.A.M, Xenoblade 3DS... And hopefully we'll see Project Zero, Devil's Third and Yoshi Wooly World too!
They only list games that got a metacritic score of 85+ AND a user score of 8.5+
There is no they should have put X and Y on there. These are the games that fulfill these two scores.
@NodesforNoids It's way too early to dump the Wii U and move on. Nintendo would alienate and frustrate recent adopters of the system and make them even less likely to buy their next console. The Wii U needs at least a five year life like other consoles. Sega was quick to jump ship and upgrade their consoles so often and look what happened to them. Nintendo needs to ride this one out and make their next console in 2017 or so. And I think they're giving the 3DS a modest upgrade so it can stay in the market for a few more years with the goal of synchronizing a handheld and home console release when the Wii U finishes its run. Point is, now is not the time for Nintendo to abandon either the Wii U or 3DS.
Main reason I keep buying every Nintendo console, those games are all of such high quality, just like almost every game Nintendo releases. IMO Rayman feels a bit out of place though, since it's on all platforms and Nintendo had nothing to do with it (same goes for Bayonetta 1 actually ).
Even without counting Bayonetta/2 and X/Y as separates, that's still 17, over twice what's on the competition. So it didn't really matter that they dual - counted .
Is donkey kong country a niche franchise or something now....? Oh well, good to see bayonetta on there!
There are several deserving games that didn't make the cut just because they didn't get an 85+ avarage score on Metacritic (Kid Icarus Uprising, The wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Countr Tropical Freeze and even New Super Mario Bros U), and many of them BARELY didn't reach that score..... how sad....
@Blast lol this fight's about to get (info) graphic!
It has to be retail only(since this is a buying guide) so two 3DS games, one WiiU game and three PSVITA games aren't counted since you can't pick them up in stores.
Sometimes you guys argue for no reason
@rjejr Nice...
Where can you find Pikmin 3 though? The price has skyrocketed online and it isn't available in any local stores.
As much as I love W101, it does not meet the requirements of this infographic.
And this is basically the reason why I only have a Wii U and 3ds as these gen systems. More highly rated and fun games to me.
@8bitforever Try going into some wee independent stores nearby.
@MrGawain yeah because those guys like to buy the exact same game every year with same gameplay that has nothing difference besides the name of the games... Go buy something better than the overrated cod and fifa. I used to love cod but not anymore I'm ashamed I used to like that game so much...
...not to mention communist nations are not hijacking Nintendo to instigate world war. (Sony-North Korea-US)
It's sad though, if Nintendo thinks this can replace TV ads, they have lost already
SMT IV and tropical freeze both deserve positions in that info graphic.
I have 12 of those 19 games.
lol its easy for Nintendo to point to stats like this when its been out twice as long as XONE/PS4. They don't include PS3/360 which is funny because they still outsell Wii U in most weeks which would make them competition as well.
Regardless I do think Nintendo's library is vastly superior to the ONE/PS4 and it deserves far more praise than what it receives.
Q: What's the difference between owning a PS4 or owning and Xbox One?
A: A coin toss
@blujay1524
People should be using that coin to save up for a decent PC. Seriously, it's funny to watch dedicated Sony and MS go at each others throats about "power" when my budget PC destroys both of them...without having to pay to play online, and getting access to STEAM sales, and having better control options, and every good indie game and then some, and...well you get the picture. Nintendo exclusives+PC near-universal support...why are PS4 and Xbox One even a thing?
@TobiasAmaranth How so? They sell Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 separately on the eShop (and physically in some regions) and they are separate games. Separate games, separate experiences, both rated 85+ by both critics and users. Why would they not include a game that scores over 85? That's an asset to the system, and one they should most definitely boast.
As for Pokemon X and Y, well, it's not like people actually think they're separate games.
This kind of surprised me. Go head Nintendo
@sinalefa
Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Captain Toad, Hyrule Warriors, NSMBU... There's a good number of very fun and well regarded games that aren't even on that list.
I do suppose DKC, MH3U and W101 are three of the best games on the system though. Those three are certainly worth mentioning even if critics did not value them at 85+ Because in my honest opinion 2 of those 3 rank among my top favorite games of all time, and the other would certainly be in the top 20.
"Nintendo is naturally going for the best angle and spin possible" by only counting the best games that scored 8.5+/10 by reviewers AND users together, which is extremely fair.
If Nintendo had included last gen too (adding Wii and DS vs. 360, PS3, and PSP) then that would have been a really sad day for "all other consoles".
It's great because Virtues Last Reward is one of the 8 for "other consoles" as well xD
@R_Champ while is agree that PC is certainly the best option over PS4/XB1... I kinda have a soft spot for the upcoming Bloodborne.. Along with Uncharted 4 and Final Fantasy 15.. And kingdom hearts/Persona 5... So I've kinda been on the edge of nabbing one.. Also.. Guilty Gear Xrd :0
@Captain_Gonru I think they will probably still go up with physical till they can work out all bugs with movie players or atleast start going with microchip styled data drives first.
@TobiasAmaranth i can see why you say that about pokemon, but how so with bayonetta
Bayonetta, Rayman Legends, and Virtue's Last Reward...
uh
"other consoles" that Nintendo shade
@Omarpixel9 or at least switched Bayonetta 1.
@BLPs
I have both, i would say the PS Vita is far superior to DS. However the DS is superior in game quality and choice. DS also has superior backing by its owner compared to PS Vita. Vita can do more, and do it better looking, but there is more to do on DS. Thats my opinion on the two.
@midnafanboy
Huh... wait WAT?
Why is Mario Kart 8 on the list at all, and where is DKC TF? It's a better game than Mario 3D World.
@R_Champ nice!!!
This is one of the main reasons I got a Wii U and 3DS. For quality game play.
@ShanaUnite
Not really? I love the Professor Layton series and have all of them but Virtues Last Reward is a superior product to all of them. Besides Layton didn't get the Metacritic scores!
Everyone into narrative video games needs to play VLR!!!
@Monkeh I'm not sure I agree that a well made artistic platforming game, bursting with creativity, with some of the best gamepad implementation (due to originally being created as an exclusive) on the console. It is incredibly at home on the Wii U.
I'm just happy VLR is there.
@R_Champ I think people (myself included) prefer to use a controller (which is accessible via PC/MAC anyways). But as of this generation there really isn't one, save the Sony exclusives.
I'm still trying to figure out any reason to buy a PS4/Xbone over a PS3/360 being that they have all the same new games but with slightly better graphics.
As Nintendo Fans/Hardcore/Retro Gamers, I think every regular poster to this website would say: "$350+ for an entertainment system with updated graphics? Big deal, the Wii U is a video game console with Backwards Compatibility and GAMES"
