@COVIDberry The base game is definitely on the easy side, but the final secret level in 3D World is easily the most challenging level in any 3D Mario platformer to date. The jump in difficulty is jarring, to say the least...
This game is fundamentally unplayable, in my opinion. It’s drowning in steep microtransactions, and the base control scheme is wonky and unmanageable. The only thing I like about it is the character roster, and I hope future console Mario Kart games borrow that page from Tour, but absolutely nothing else.
@Menchi Those were always clearly intended as placeholder mockups. Granted, this one may not be authentic, as well, but no credible source has ever released a boxart for Prime Trilogy on Switch and tried to pass it off as the real thing.
This game is refreshingly confusing to play. Crabs on scooters swinging nunchucks to ska music. Can’t say any other game has ever made me laugh the way this one does.
Glad to see him here. I was super bummed to lose him on GameXplain, but as long as I can still find and enjoy his insights and sense of humor somewhere on the Internet, I’m happy.
@BoyfriendOfDeath I highly doubt that, for several reasons. There are no third-party series In Smash with more than one unique character (Ken and Richter are echoes). Square Enix is super cagey with their properties, and it was a stretch for Sakurai even to secure the rights to put Cloud in the game, as evidenced by the two music tracks and complete lack of FF spirits. And thirdly, Hero is a Square-Enix character, and I doubt they’d include another DLC property from a studio already part of the DLC.
@DJ_Cheemstar I’ll agree that Mario has significant enough representation at this point. There are other first party series that need attention in Smash (see my previous comment about Zelda). And I know it’s a fairly unpopular opinion, but I don’t think Waluigi deserves a spot in Smash, either. He’s never appeared in a mainline Mario game, and he’s essentially just a filler spot on the roster of spinoff titles. Sure, he’s amusing here and there, but any potential move set for him would have to be entirely made up or drawn from stretched obscurity. What would a stage representing him even look like? What unique new music could they include? I’d much rather see another Zelda character, or even someone from Kirby.
@DJ_Cheemstar Mario is not only Nintendo’s flagship franchise, but it’s also the highest grossing video game IP in history. The cast of Mario is instantly recognizable to anyone who has even heard of video games, and each playable Mario character in Smash has made many, many appearances in games of various genres. The same can not be said for Fire Emblem as a franchise nor the characters from Fire Emblem in Smash. Aside from Ike and Marth, none of the characters were featured outside of amiibo cameos (or in Warriors) in more than a single game, and to your average person, the eight characters are virtually indistinguishable. Don’t get me wrong, I love FE, but to try to argue that it deserves as much representation in Smash as Mario is a bit silly. For crying out loud, Zelda hasn’t received a new character since Brawl, and technically we have three Links, two Zeldas and Ganondorf (a clone of a character form an unrelated IP) representing what could be considered Nintendo’s number two IP.
@Moroboshi876 The DS outsold the Wii, unless you’re referring to home consoles exclusively. But the DS was technically Nintendo’s most successful hardware, in terms of raw sales.
It’s pretty rough, considering we know exactly how this game ends. I’m curious to see how they handle this narrative’s inevitable dark conclusion. Will each of the champions have to do battle with one of the Ganon blights and lose? Sounds rough.
@ianl579 This isn’t the first time they’ve stuck to an art style when they’ve portrayed the same Link again canonically. Ocarina and Mask used the same engine and art style, and the same can be said for the art styles of Wind Walker and Phantom Hourglass. When the same Link appears more than once, Nintendo has historically stuck to the same art style.
@PapaPedro I totally agree. To be honest, when the second DLC pack was titled “The Champions Ballad,” I got really excited that we were going to get more of their story, but sadly, that wasn’t the case. It looks like this will finally do them some justice, it seems.
@Shamrock This is being developed by an entirely different studio than BoTW 2. That’s still coming. And Warriors games are almost always rated T. The first Hyrule Warriors had a T rating. Even Twilight Princess was rated T. It’s not at all surprising.
@Shamrock This will be the same Zelda and Link from BoTW, not their ancestors. Remember, they were frozen in time for 100 years, Link in stasis sleep and Zelda being locked into binding Ganon.
Just when I thought I had sworn off Warriors games after musou fatigue, this comes along. The fact that the art style matches BoTW definitely makes this appealing, plus the prequel story elements have me intrigued. It’s entirely unlike Nintendo to address story elements in Zelda with direct prequels or sequels. I love it. Plus, I felt like the champions were underutilized in the original game, and it will be awesome to flesh them out a bit more here, plus see what they can really do, combat-wise. What’s one more musou game, anyway? Sign me up.
@UmbreonsPapa I’m in the states, too (east coast). Not sure how to go about coordinating an island visit, but I’m all for it if you’re interested and have any ideas. This site could really use a direct messaging feature, haha.
@Rika_Yoshitake Nowhere in the article is the game referred to as a “limited print run.” They simply call it “limited” or “limited release,” both of which are accurate. You might want to read the entire article first before lobbing criticisms.
I desperately wanted to get into this game but it just never clicked. There’s no sense of direction and I got so bored so quickly. Maybe I should try it again.
I thought amiibo was over (aside from the Smash DLC, anyway). I’ve collected them all up to this point so I guess I have to buy these, too... Who am I kidding? They’re adorable and I want them.
My inner child died and went to heaven during this trailer. Too bad my place is way too small and carpeted. There’s no chance I could get this to work practically at home.
I would’ve ignored this entirely if it weren’t for the glowing review. I’ll definitely throw it on the pile of games to play and at this rate with my current backlog I’ll probably be checking it out in 2022 or something.
I am falling into the bad habit of starting games and leaving them unfinished while moving on to new ones. Over the past couple months I’ve nearly finished Golden Sun and Hollow Knight, and while I should just wrap those up and be done with them, I’ve since begun replays of Starfox Adventures, Metroid Prime: Federation Force (in co-op with a friend) and Banjo Tooie, all of which remain far from finished. And while I should just finish any one of those, I opted instead to start Astral Chain the other day, instead. I have a problem.
I really wanted this game back when it released on other platforms. I never expected to see it on Switch, especially so long after the fact. I’m excited, nonetheless.
I think Nintendo is forgetting that the majority of their consumer base buys Nintendo consoles for first party Nintendo games, yet they insist on only announcing a single in-house game every few months. Don’t get me wrong; I’m loving the increase in third party support, but we really need a Direct that includes Nintendo’s own titles. Even a Mini would do.
I have enough spare GBAs and link cables to make the GameCube original the definitive version for me. I’ll pass. This game is best played in local co-op, anyway.
@Ulysses The proposed Switch Pro screen would have to be substantially larger for the human eye to even notice a practical difference between a 720p and 1080p output. And at that size, the portability of the console would be compromised so as to be impractical, anyway.
The people in this comments section who say they want a 1080p handheld screen fail to realize that on a screen as small as the Switch in handheld mode, the human eye can’t distinguish a difference between 720p and 1080p. It would be a ridiculous waste of resources to make the handheld Switch output in anything higher than 720p. You literally wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
@TheFullAndy I will agree that datamines are annoying when they’re reported on with obvious spoilers in the headline, especially when they relate to the plot or secret elements of an unreleased game or DLC content. And occasionally, this site isn’t as careful as it should be when it comes to spoilers. I do occasionally see headlines or subtitles that are misleading to one degree or another, but whether those are done intentionally or not, I can’t really say. Don’t get me wrong, NintendoLife isn’t perfect, but I am hard-pressed to find another site that reports on as much Nintendo content as this one does, and if the worst thing I have to endure is an occasional fluff piece or mild clickbait that doesn’t particularly interest me, I’m fine just ignoring those. They don’t immediately invalidate everything good that this site does.
@TheFullAndy Sorry, in my haste to reply I missed what you said at the end of your comment. My bad. I still fail to see any deterioration in the quality of the articles here. I get that it’s disappointing that not every single game gets reviewed like they did back in the Wii U days, but as you already stated, that’s understandable, given the flood of games on the eShop every week (with most of them being obvious shovelware). By and large, the same content that has existed for years is still present. There are just far more things happening in the world of Nintendo, meaning there is going to be a bit more content on this site. Sure, not all of it is geared specifically toward my interests, but I have the sense to ignore articles like that and certainly not comment on them, telling those who are genuinely interested that this whole site is worthless because certain articles aren’t written with me specifically in mind. I agree that constructive criticism is a helpful tool, but most of the criticism I see lately isn’t that kind. It’s more of a “I don’t care about this exact game/topic/thought piece, therefore this site is trash” kind of criticism. To people like that, I’m simply asking why they even bother visiting. They seem to get zero enjoyment out of the content here and in the interests their own happiness, their time would be better spent elsewhere. But I’m genuinely curious to hear your opinion on datamining. You are obviously an intelligent person whose comments are genuinely well thought out. What about articles pertaining to datamines do you disagree with? Again, genuinely curious.
@TheFullAndy Of course he’s free to say whatever he wants, but if you read his post history you’ll see a slew of complaints against this website as a whole. I don’t understand why people who hate this site so much and complain about it all the time even stick around. They’re free to leave, but they seem to think that their negativity needs to be voiced in every single article they don’t find 100% interesting. Also, this guy seems to have a strange idea that datamining is illegal or unethical, and has said as much in the past. And Anti-Matter calling him out before he even posted was unnecessary, as well. Don’t think for a minute that I’m somehow siding with him.
The long and short of it is, I’ve been regularly posting on this site for over seven years now, and in recent months, the comment sections on these articles have grown increasingly toxic. I have not noticed any difference in quality in the journalism here as of late, but people seem to be more negative and entitled than ever, whining and complaining if every article post it isn’t exactly aimed at their narrow interests. They bring nothing to the table except trollish criticism of this site, and it makes me wonder why in the world they even bother visiting here. They waste their time and everyone else’s by whining about every post, and I just happened to call one of them out.
And I definitely made reference to the original article in my post. I said stuff like this is harmless and interesting, and it gives us a preview of what might come next. I can’t imagine how you missed that. If anything, you’re being a bit hypocritical saying my criticism is worthless while posting criticism of your own.
@Cosats You know you can always just leave if it’s so bad here. I personally like stuff like this. It’s harmless and it gives us a look at what might actually be coming, plus it generates discussion. You’re just wasting everyone’s time (including yours) with comments like the one you left. If you hate it here, do yourself a favor and stop visiting. You’ll be happier.
I finally broke down and bought a third party wireless Hyperkin N64 controller after reading the reviews and I’m loving it. It has made me fiendishly excited to revisit old N64 games and I’ll be working on Banjo Tooie and Diddy Kong Racing a bit this weekend. And to keep the Rare theme going, I also am revisiting Star Fox Adventures. It’s woefully linear and not very mechanically exciting, but it’s aesthetically pleasing, and I still think it’s one of the prettiest games on the GameCube, plus the voice acting and dialogue are so hilariously cheesy.
Apple isn’t going to budge. They don’t need to. And frankly, it’s hard to pick a side to root for when they’re both so scummy.
Epic clearly knew this would happen (they made a pre-rendered CGI trailer for it, for crying out loud), and they’re violating the terms of service they agreed to when they put the game on the App Store. They’re not some “hero” like they want the consumer to believe. They’re just trying to maximize their own profit and not pay anything to Apple for use of the platform.
@nessisonett Federation Force is unfairly criticized. Beneath the exterior, it’s actually a really fun team based shooter and it’s a total blast in local co-op. The problem is that it’s not a Metroid game and should never have been branded as such, especially during a time when the fans were dying for anything new from the series. People wrote it off because it was a spinoff, it had an awkward art style and they understandably wanted a traditional Metroid game, but I dare say that if it were skinned differently and launched as a new IP independent from Metroid entirely, it would’ve been praised. Bashing on Federation Force is just the “cool thing to do” and everyone just blindly jumps on the bandwagon, and most of them without actually ever having played the game.
The bosses in Hollow Knight are brutal, but I’m in what I believe is the final area of the map. I’m hoping I can put another dent in the game this weekend. Picked up a massively overpriced copy of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (I cannot believe I actually paid $140) from a used game shop the other day, so I may start that if I can finish Hollow Knight.

They’re not some “hero” like they want the consumer to believe. They’re just trying to maximize their own profit and not pay anything to Apple for use of the platform.
Re: FIFA Rival Pro Evolution Soccer Won't Be Making The Switch This Year
Wait, they bleeped out a four letter c-word in the quote. Is it the one I think it is?
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Has Sold More Copies Than The Entire Metroid Franchise
Re: Rare Celebrates Its 35th Anniversary
Their best games will always be their SNES/N64 works. I sure do miss their output from those days, but Rare as we knew them is pretty much gone.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 8th)
