Ahead of the chicken verse egg Splatfest this weekend, Nintendo has released a new update for its popular online team-based squid shooter, Splatoon 2.
It primarily changes the specifications for some of the main weapons. The patch notes mention how the development team has been observing the changes in weapon choice since it rolled out version 5.2.0 and made adjustments to certain weapons used more often and by higher rank players.
It's also made an effort to improve weapons that players have started using more regularly - to give everyone more of an option in battle. Long-term analysis of weapon usage will continue and adjustments will be made accordingly in future updates.
Ver. 5.3.0 (Released August 17, 2020)
Changes to Multiplayer
- Specifications for some of the main weapons have been changed.
Weapon Change Splattershot
Tentatek Splattershot
Kensa Splattershot
Hero Shot Replica
Octo Shot Replica- Reduced the amount of time it takes for shot spread (which is the gradual distance shots spread away from the target when firing continuously) to return to normal.
- Most Shooter-type weapons will have increased shot spread if you continuously fire.
- When you stop firing, the shot spread gradually returns to normal, but with this fix, we’ve reduced the amount of time it takes to return.
.52 Gal
.52 Gal Deco
Kensa .52 Gal- Extended the amount of time when firing continuously until shot spread reaches its max.
- Reduced the amount of time it takes for shot spread to return to normal.
- Most Shooter-type weapons will have increased shot spread if you continuously fire.
- When you stop firing, the shot spread gradually returns to normal, but with this fix, we’ve reduced the amount of time it takes to return.
Bamboozler 14 Mk I
Bamboozler 14 Mk II
Bamboozler 14 Mk III- Increased ink consumption by roughly 20%.
Dualie Squelchers
Custom Dualie Squelchers- Increased the ink consumed by rolling from 5% to 8% of the Ink Tank.
- Very slightly decreased the size of hit detection between normal shots and players, making it harder to hit opponents.
- There are no changes to hit detection between players and shots after rolling.
Splat Brella
Sorella Brella
Hero Brella Replica- Decreased damage dealt by each ink droplet from 18.0 to 16.2.
- Due to this change, the maximum damage dealt by a single shot has gone down from 90.0 to 81.0.
As a result of closely observing the changes in weapon choice after ver. 5.2.0 was released, we made adjustments to certain weapons that were still being used often or were often used by players of the highest rank, even after the changes in weapon choice evened out.
We’ve also made adjustments to improve those weapons that players started using a lot more often (and those with similar features) to give players more options.
We plan to perform a long-term analysis after this update is applied and make adjustments based on that.
- Reduced the amount of time it takes for shot spread (which is the gradual distance shots spread away from the target when firing continuously) to return to normal.

I love that they are still supporting this game.
That reminds me, I still need to finish the octo expansion sometime.
It’s nice to see the Dualie Squelchers get a nerf.
Still love this game. Just started playing again a few days ago.
Same. I used to play this a lot but haven’t touched it in almost a year. There’s been too many great ports keeping me away from the first party gems. I’m on like world 4 or 5 of the expansion. Forgot how many there are. @Kalmaro
Would still like the Octo campaign to receive its own physical release.
I wonder what the other two returning Splatfests will be. I am personally hoping for Squid v. Octopus and Chaos v. Order.
Too bad this still doesn't stop the hackers on this game. I would like Nintendo to do another update to make it faster to level up in game. The point system is pretty bad when you win, it feels like l lose because the system is slow and doesn't give you much. Many other games l played were never bad as Splatoon with leveling up.
@Kalmaro Octo expansion gets really cool after you get out of the subway. And as a reminder, you don't have to finish all the subway stops, you just need to collect the for parts to build the "thang". (that's what they call it.)
@WoomyNNYes Thanks, it caught me off guard how tough some of the levels were. I'll have to complete them eventually!
@Kalmaro Yeah, Octo is a bit tougher than the main single player game. I had to youtube a few subway stops. The one where you have to destroy a wall of crates with one sniper shot, a friend showed me how to do that.
Actually, when you fail a stop a number of times, a window prompt opens and Marina(I think it's marina) asks if you want a code to skip. If you you say yes, they give you a pass and it counts as complete. It doesn't affect your game or the ending. I say take a few passes just to get out of the subway, if you just want that part over with. You can always go back into the subway after you beat octo, to try and beat those tough stops, if you want to complete them. I did that, I think, with 2-3 stops.
@WoomyNNYes I think I got that option before, I'm just stubborn. Eventually I hit frustrated and just went back to online. I think it's time I went back.
@psychoBrew Good morning troll. Did someone pee in your coffee?
One of the best Nintendo games ever made. Why do people not like it?
@OorWullie Perhaps because it started on Wii U.
The update is not available here yet.
Genuinely the best shooter I’ve ever played. Or at least, the one I’ve got the most enjoyment out of.
Really though, what needs a nerf is ‘people who aren’t me’. I’ve noticed there are quite a few of them around who better at this game than I am, and I feel subsequently underpowered. Please nerf other players Nintendo.
@Ventilator yup, not seeing it here.
Wow, this is a really an actually really good update. Really targeted the more over-centralizing weapons, really the only things more I could ask for is a splattershot pro nerf and maybe and armor nerf, otherwise good stuff all around.
I like this game, but I almost never play because of the 5 minute presentation that happens before you can play. They need to make that skipable.
Splattershot gets a buff, and Bamboozler gets the king of all nerfs......okay, Nintendo.....
@psychoBrew Nice trolling.
Never noticed any of this, but good to have anyways I guess
@thesilverbrick oh goodie. Dualie squelchers can go fall in a pit and die.
@psychoBrew hi! Your a troll, so good luck in life!
They were terrible before, but now the Bamboozler is utterly worthless.
Great game. I started playing a bit again to get back into the swing of things for the Splatfest.
They nerfed the brella? Something that was already underused. At least it was fun to use before, but definitely not overpowered and you can barely ever get a 90 damage hit. Oh well, glad to see them nerf the Dualie Squelchers
I have no idea why they nerfed the brella again but the 52 gal buff sounds interesting and i think i might play that more and it might have the potential to become a god tier weapon being that it has the highest ttk in the game
