Re: Talking Point: How Do You Play NES Games These Days?

thesilverbrick

My original ‘85 NES is still kicking. I replaced the pin connector with the “Blinking Light Win” model a couple years ago and it runs flawlessly every single time. I know I can easily play NES games literally everywhere, but nothing beats firing up a chunky cartridge on original hardware.

Re: Review: Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Switch) - Still Out Of This World

thesilverbrick

The price is obviously steep, but unfortunately I will be contributing to the problem and buying the physical $70 version. I already have Galaxy on 3D All Stars, but I desperately want a physical version of Galaxy 2 and they don’t sell it separately. Between the $70 game and two $40 amiibo, I’m blowing $150 on 15+ year-old games I’ve already bought multiple times before. Yikes.

Re: Opinion: We Really Don't Need A Donkey Kong Timeline

thesilverbrick

I think the game is heavily implying that Lady from the original arcade Donkey Kong was Pauline’s grandmother, meaning Cranky is still the big ape in that game and “Jumpman” could be an ancestor of Mario. When you look at it through that lens, the entire DK and Mario timeline actually makes sense. I realize that lore has never been the strong suit of games like this, but Bananza actually does a lot to harmonize the Mario and DK timelines. Not that we needed it, though.

Re: Japanese Charts: Fans Go Bananas For Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

thesilverbrick

@Serpenterror I actually never complained, if you read my post again. And I bought the game myself. I just find it a little bizarre to put such little effort into a port and the charge more than it cost when the game released 15 years ago. The Metroid Prime Remaster had infinitely more love and care put into it and sold for $20 less. $40 would have been a much more sensible price point for such a low-effort port.

Re: Poll: Do You Prefer Fire Emblem: Three Houses Or Engage?

thesilverbrick

I personally don’t care for all the social and dating sim bloat that has taken over modern Fire Emblem. I want to play a tactical strategy RPG without having to take care of virtual pets in between each mission to make sure they all get married. Engage was an amazing return to form and I would take it over Three Houses any day.

Re: Feature: 16 Best Nintendo Switch Soundtracks Of 2023

thesilverbrick

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have their issues in terms of performance, but the soundtrack consistently fired on all cylinders. I’m aware the base game came out last year, but the DLC was a 2023 release and that part of the game in particular had some great tracks, especially the Indigo Disk. The remastered tracks from Gen 5 were particularly amazing.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Targeting A 2024 Release For The Switch Successor

thesilverbrick

@Dragonite89 Specs are generally irrelevant when it comes to gauging Nintendo’s success. GameCube was one of their worst performing consoles and it was technically superior to the PS2, which absolutely trounced it.

By contrast, the Wii absolutely dominated its generation despite being essentially a souped up GameCube and paling in comparison to the PS3 and 360, spec-wise.

The Wii U bombed because it wasn’t marketed properly and the architecture was a nightmare for porting. When it released it was ahead of PS3 and XBox 360 in terms of specs. Third-party developers jumped ship when it was apparent nobody was buying third party games on Wii U, even before the PS4 and XBox One came along. The Wii U was the most powerful system on the market for a few months and it didn’t make a difference.

Re: Where To Pre-Order Nintendo Switch Pastel Joy-Con

thesilverbrick

@Nassov Newer JoyCon have a bit of extra padding behind the stick ensemble, which effectively stops drift. They’ve been doing this since the Skyward Sword set. I have used my Skyward Sword JoyCon constantly for a couple years now and there hasn’t been any sign of drifting.

Re: The Wonderful 101: Remastered's Free Stretch-Goal DLC Is Available Now

thesilverbrick

@Cashews You’re definitely right. In most cases crowdfunding is absolutely a scam, especially in the case of this game, which did not need to be crowdfunded. I can see the merit of crowdfunding for smaller ambitious indie titles, but a port of a game originally published by a major studio absolutely does not need crowdfunding to get off the ground.

Re: The Wonderful 101: Remastered's Free Stretch-Goal DLC Is Available Now

thesilverbrick

@iDidSomething I don’t want other people to have to pay for the DLC out of spite, I’m just irritated that I and many others effectively already paid for the DLC and it’s now free. Sure, give it for free to everybody, but send those original backers a little something extra to offset the higher cost they paid. I’ve learned a valuable lesson here and will never be backing another game on Kickstarter again.

Re: The Wonderful 101: Remastered's Free Stretch-Goal DLC Is Available Now

thesilverbrick

@Cashews This was the first and only game I’ve ever backed on Kickstarter. I did it because at the time I was told I was going to get it earlier than everyone else and pay a slightly lower price for the game and the DLC combined. It seems like a good deal. And then when the game launched, they had issues shipping it, and I received it a couple weeks later than the retail launch and now the DLC is just being given to everybody for free. I paid more money than your average customer just to get the game late and zero bonuses with it. Lesson learned.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online Game Boy, SNES & NES Service With Four More Titles

thesilverbrick

@EarthboundBenjy I see where you’re coming from and I don’t deny that there are plenty of good games on the NES and SNES that are not included in the service, but so many of those you listed belong to other publishers and Nintendo does not hold the rights to them. It might not be practical or realistic to expect them to appear. The NES version of Tetris and Star Tropics II are reasonable requests, though.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online Game Boy, SNES & NES Service With Four More Titles

thesilverbrick

@EarthboundBenjy Out of curiosity, other than, say, Mario RPG, what games would you realistically like to see come to the NES and SNES apps? Nintendo has pretty much released all of their first party games, and I can’t imagine too many third-party companies are itching to have Nintendo give out their retro games for free when they could independently sell them as separate downloads, like the Castlevania or Mega Man collections.

Re: Quiz: Are You Ready For Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom? Find Out With Our Fiendishly Hard BOTW Quiz

thesilverbrick

The answer to the last question wasn’t fair or categorically true. It could be argued that Breath of the Wild takes place at the end of any of the timelines, but after Spirit Tracks is the hardest to reconcile, considering that Hyrule as we know it ceased to exist after Wind Waker, meaning all the familiar landmarks in BOTW rule out this being the “New Hyrule” founded in Spirit Tracks. And notably, when Zelda is praying over the Master Sword, she references it having been “bathed in the embers of twilight,” which has always led me to believe this takes place well into the future after Twilight Princess, not Wind Waker.

The actual truth of the matter is that Nintendo doesn’t care about the timeline and is leaving it open to interpretation, but the interpretation this quiz chose as the “correct answer” is categorically the wrong one, no matter how you slice it.
