@Offolsense The pacing might be a little different, but the core gameplay loop is identical: a single interconnected world that expands as you acquire upgrades and augment your mobility. It’s the exact same premise, just told in 3D and from a first person perspective.
@Elock I would argue the opposite. Metroid transitioned from 2D to 3D while keeping its essence intact. For comparison, look how radically different 2D and 3D Mario are. They’re essentially different games.
I’ve been suffering from some pretty severe Musou fatigue lately but this game is absolutely excellent and I can’t put it down. Age of Calamity was a lot of fun too, but the deviation from canon kind of diminished my excitement.
Hopefully I can finish it before Prime 4 next week.
@rjejr The video says that the 3.0 update is free for everyone on both systems and I don’t imagine the HH update is tied to it in any way. It looks like the only thing the five dollars gets you on Switch 2 is a resolution bump, megaphone and mouse controls.
My original ‘85 NES is still kicking. I replaced the pin connector with the “Blinking Light Win” model a couple years ago and it runs flawlessly every single time. I know I can easily play NES games literally everywhere, but nothing beats firing up a chunky cartridge on original hardware.
I used $18 worth of GameStop points to bring this down to a slightly more palatable price. I’m falling in love with Galaxy 2 all over again. I have no regrets.
@The_Nintendo_Pedant That’s a fair question. It mostly comes down to playing the games at a higher fidelity, but also I’m a collector. I own over 1100 physical games and just about everything Nintendo has ever published. I know it’s entirely my own neurotic choice to continue buy these items, so I’ll refrain from complaining too much, haha.
@Lyricana I am fully aware the amiibo aren’t a required part of the game, but they’re an accessory specifically tied to this release. I’m spending $150 on Mario Galaxy related items connected to this specific rerelease of the game.
The price is obviously steep, but unfortunately I will be contributing to the problem and buying the physical $70 version. I already have Galaxy on 3D All Stars, but I desperately want a physical version of Galaxy 2 and they don’t sell it separately. Between the $70 game and two $40 amiibo, I’m blowing $150 on 15+ year-old games I’ve already bought multiple times before. Yikes.
While his departure is quite a bummer (Zion has always been so pleasant to listen to in the videos he makes), I wish him the absolute best. Thank you for everything, Zion.
I think the game is heavily implying that Lady from the original arcade Donkey Kong was Pauline’s grandmother, meaning Cranky is still the big ape in that game and “Jumpman” could be an ancestor of Mario. When you look at it through that lens, the entire DK and Mario timeline actually makes sense. I realize that lore has never been the strong suit of games like this, but Bananza actually does a lot to harmonize the Mario and DK timelines. Not that we needed it, though.
@Serpenterror I actually never complained, if you read my post again. And I bought the game myself. I just find it a little bizarre to put such little effort into a port and the charge more than it cost when the game released 15 years ago. The Metroid Prime Remaster had infinitely more love and care put into it and sold for $20 less. $40 would have been a much more sensible price point for such a low-effort port.
I personally don’t care for all the social and dating sim bloat that has taken over modern Fire Emblem. I want to play a tactical strategy RPG without having to take care of virtual pets in between each mission to make sure they all get married. Engage was an amazing return to form and I would take it over Three Houses any day.
I snagged a set of the amiibo for pickup on Best Buy’s app this morning. They’re not at my local Best Buy and I have a 40 minute drive to go get them, but it’s way better than paying a scalper.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have their issues in terms of performance, but the soundtrack consistently fired on all cylinders. I’m aware the base game came out last year, but the DLC was a 2023 release and that part of the game in particular had some great tracks, especially the Indigo Disk. The remastered tracks from Gen 5 were particularly amazing.
@120frames-please Biologists are fairly confident the average human eye can’t detect anything beyond 70 or so frames per second. Anyone looking for 90 fps is asking for something thats literally indistinguishable.
Now if only they took their time with the game and delivered on this visual concept. The games are fun and all, but the visuals and performance definitely at least disrupt my enjoyment of them.
@Dragonite89 Specs are generally irrelevant when it comes to gauging Nintendo’s success. GameCube was one of their worst performing consoles and it was technically superior to the PS2, which absolutely trounced it.
By contrast, the Wii absolutely dominated its generation despite being essentially a souped up GameCube and paling in comparison to the PS3 and 360, spec-wise.
The Wii U bombed because it wasn’t marketed properly and the architecture was a nightmare for porting. When it released it was ahead of PS3 and XBox 360 in terms of specs. Third-party developers jumped ship when it was apparent nobody was buying third party games on Wii U, even before the PS4 and XBox One came along. The Wii U was the most powerful system on the market for a few months and it didn’t make a difference.
Am I the only one who likes scouring the world for the items necessary to upgrade my equipment? I love tracking something down, photographing it for the compendium and then using the sensor to locate more. The thrill of the hunt is a good time.
@Nassov Newer JoyCon have a bit of extra padding behind the stick ensemble, which effectively stops drift. They’ve been doing this since the Skyward Sword set. I have used my Skyward Sword JoyCon constantly for a couple years now and there hasn’t been any sign of drifting.
Does the free game apply for people who bought the physical version of KOTOR 2 from Limited Run? I hope so. I wouldn’t mind a free copy of Force Unleashed.
@Cashews You’re definitely right. In most cases crowdfunding is absolutely a scam, especially in the case of this game, which did not need to be crowdfunded. I can see the merit of crowdfunding for smaller ambitious indie titles, but a port of a game originally published by a major studio absolutely does not need crowdfunding to get off the ground.
@iDidSomething I don’t want other people to have to pay for the DLC out of spite, I’m just irritated that I and many others effectively already paid for the DLC and it’s now free. Sure, give it for free to everybody, but send those original backers a little something extra to offset the higher cost they paid. I’ve learned a valuable lesson here and will never be backing another game on Kickstarter again.
@Cashews This was the first and only game I’ve ever backed on Kickstarter. I did it because at the time I was told I was going to get it earlier than everyone else and pay a slightly lower price for the game and the DLC combined. It seems like a good deal. And then when the game launched, they had issues shipping it, and I received it a couple weeks later than the retail launch and now the DLC is just being given to everybody for free. I paid more money than your average customer just to get the game late and zero bonuses with it. Lesson learned.
So those of us who paid a higher price for the Kickstarter so that we could get the DLC just paid a higher price than someone who bought it at retail for no reason whatsoever. Sweet.
@Eagly I’m sure the necessary patches and coding were ready ages ago to support Home in Scarlet and Violet. They deliberately hold off on adding import support to Pokémon games to prevent people from importing generations worth of Pokémon and blowing through the game and dominating online. They’ve done it every generation since Bank was introduced.
As much as this is disappointing, at least they’ll allow you to continue to enjoy the part you paid for. I wish more service based games did this when they closed down. I hate investing money into a mobile game only to have it taken down and become unplayable, effectively flushing my investment.
@quinnyboy58 He wants a functioning TOTK pro controller. He likely preordered one or was lucky enough to find one in a store and now has to just return it instead of exchanging it for the product he wanted. I’d be bummed, too.
Every few months one of my pro controllers develops a slight drift. I have to open it up and blow out the stick mechanism to reset it. Small pet hairs find their way into the guts of the controller and cause the drift in my case. Removing them always solves the problem.
@TheBigBlue If being a Disney property didn’t prevent Sora from being included in Smash, I can’t see why it would stop him from being made into an amiibo. Disney licenses their properties for figurines all the time. Just look how many Funko Pops there are of Disney characters, Sora included.
I’ve had my original Switch since launch and this model finally made me take the plunge and jump to an OLED. I feel kind of silly, though, since I nearly never play handheld (unless I’m on a plane), so the added benefits of a sharper screen, improved battery and a decent kickstand are entirely lost on me. And this will be my sixth set of JoyCons. Oof.
@EarthboundBenjy I see where you’re coming from and I don’t deny that there are plenty of good games on the NES and SNES that are not included in the service, but so many of those you listed belong to other publishers and Nintendo does not hold the rights to them. It might not be practical or realistic to expect them to appear. The NES version of Tetris and Star Tropics II are reasonable requests, though.
@EarthboundBenjy Out of curiosity, other than, say, Mario RPG, what games would you realistically like to see come to the NES and SNES apps? Nintendo has pretty much released all of their first party games, and I can’t imagine too many third-party companies are itching to have Nintendo give out their retro games for free when they could independently sell them as separate downloads, like the Castlevania or Mega Man collections.
The answer to the last question wasn’t fair or categorically true. It could be argued that Breath of the Wild takes place at the end of any of the timelines, but after Spirit Tracks is the hardest to reconcile, considering that Hyrule as we know it ceased to exist after Wind Waker, meaning all the familiar landmarks in BOTW rule out this being the “New Hyrule” founded in Spirit Tracks. And notably, when Zelda is praying over the Master Sword, she references it having been “bathed in the embers of twilight,” which has always led me to believe this takes place well into the future after Twilight Princess, not Wind Waker.
The actual truth of the matter is that Nintendo doesn’t care about the timeline and is leaving it open to interpretation, but the interpretation this quiz chose as the “correct answer” is categorically the wrong one, no matter how you slice it.
