Re: Nintendo Has Detailed The USB Cables You Can Use To Safely Charge Your Switch

thedicemaster

@Piersen cables with a 56k OHM resistor aren't some special kind of cable, it's what the specifications for type C demand.
any cable that doesn't have one is not a type C compatible cable.

expecting the switch(or any type C device) to accept it without issues is like expecting any USB 2 device to have no issues while being fried by 10+ volt.

the reason so many type C cables are unsafe is because a 56k OHM resistor is a somewhat expensive component, and many "nameless" companies use cheaper resistors with a different resistance or no resistor at all.

@gatorboi352 nintendo is within the safe range with the switch itself, even if they deviated a little from the specs.
it will not suffer from catastrophic failure when used with proper type C cables and chargers, worst case a communicating problem will occur and the charger won't charge the switch.

the issue with the 3rd party docks is a different matter altogether.
nintendo opted to use their own method of communicating with the dock loosely based on an established standard, and they purposely didn't claim compatibility with existing type-C to HDMI devices/standards.
the 3rd party accessory makers did an incomplete job reverse engineering the dock, resulting in 3rd party docks that follow neither type-C to HDMI standards nor Nintendo's own dock designs.

Re: Random: We Have Our First Nintendo Labo Knock-Off

thedicemaster

@DTFaux nintendo has been indirectly active in China for a while now through the company "iQue".
they sold modified nintendo consoles with built-in games(to comply with Chinese anti-console laws), and upgraded handhelds and consoles to support the more complex Chinese "alphabet".
this was all with Nintendo's permission and support.

China lifted the ban on consoles a few years ago though, and I don't know how that affected the deal with iQue.

as for this ... box, I'm actually pleasantly surprised they considered the fact that several games have a portrait mode.
very little accessories are built with portrait mode in mind.

someone shared a few links that should not be shared, good thing this website's security is in order.

several game links actually link to admin pages, to open them you need to copy/paste the links and remove "/admin" from them.

Re: LEGO Worlds Just Got a New Update

thedicemaster

@riChchestM i once spent 5 minutes walking in circles on the moon looking for an NPC that i was sure was in that corner, but couldn't find him.
after a few minutes i stopped walking for a minute, and he pops up right on top of me in a spot i had already passed 20 times.
I wasn't even using a vehicle.

Re: Lichtspeer Developer Suggests That Nintendo Has Switch Achievements in the Works

thedicemaster

@Henmii the issue isn't really achievements, it's making a systemwide achievement tracking system.

games which don't have a need or reason for it will get achievements shoehorned in, as the system will put pressure on developers to include it.

achievement systems/tracking will become less creative.
developers will just use the built in system instead of building their own unique way like the photo puzzles in SSB4 and kid icarus, or the gold stars in mario games.

and when developers do bother to make their own creative achievement system you'll end up with the confusion of 2 reward systems at the same time.
"that achievement just now, did i just unlock something ingame? or did that go on my public profile?"

Re: Random: Watch What Happens When You Drop a Switch from 1,000 Feet

thedicemaster

i think not reaching terminal velocity also helped it survive.
it was spinning around, but i think it spent most of the time with either the screen or the back towards the ground.
this increases surface area, increasing drag and lowering its dropping speed.
it would've fallen much faster if 1 of the joycons was facing the ground the whole time.

Re: You Can Use Bluetooth Headphones On Your Switch, But There's A Catch

thedicemaster

@NEStalgia i'm pretty sure the vita does support Apt-X.
it's fast enough to make music games playable over bluetooth, but it ocassionally skips because the vita can only barely handle it.

Apt-X seems to be more than a simple codec though.
it seems with standard codecs each sound is individually encoded and sent resulting in inconsistent delays, while Apt-X encodes the entire audio output as a single stream resulting in a consistent delay.

Re: First Impressions: Splatoon 2 - What We Learned About Weapons, Visuals and Controls

thedicemaster

the game really needs a dual stick + motion control.
the current 1½ stick + motion is really annoying, i have difficulty aiming vertically all the time because I'm expecting the camera to respond to the right stick when i push it up or down.
going dual stick without motion is not an option for me either because I'd completely lose precision, so i wouldn't be able to hit the broad side of a squid with anything other than a roller.

Re: Review: Lifespeed (New Nintendo 3DS)

thedicemaster

@Hikingguy shooting is more of a side thing.
it's like in mario kart and wipeout, the primary goal is winning a race and along the way you can find random items to boost you or disrupt your opponents.

@WeeManStudios let me give you some more helpful input than just my "interrupted" comment.
i like the idea of the game, but there are 2 notable "weak points" in my eyes.(not counting issues caused by platform limitations, which aren't your fault)

the story mode feels like a demo, right when it started to get somewhere i was hit with a "to be continued" screen.
it just made me feel like i paid for a demo, which is something you should avoid(either make a full story right away, or skip on it at first and spend that time on making a more appealing challenge/tournament mode like what wipeout has)

next up is the vehicles.
perhaps you wanted to go for a "formula 1" kinda thing, but the 2 things i always look forward the when playing a new racing game are trying out all the different(and preferably unique) tracks, and try out all the different vehicles.
unfortunately from what i could tell they all have the same model, only differing in color and specs.
it takes away from some of the "discovery" in the game, and it feels out of place when all vehicles have very different performance despite looking identical (a fast ship should look pointier, an agile ship should have big wings, and a sturdy one should be bulky)

and as a side note: if you really want the game too feel less like flying airplanes and more like flying cars it should have an (optional?) throttle button.
planes have to keep moving, cars can stop in the middle of the road.

Re: Review: Lifespeed (New Nintendo 3DS)

thedicemaster

@WeeManStudios it IS like AiRace.
you might be thinking of the wrong game, as there are 4 games in that series.
AiRace tunnel(DSi), AiRace speed(3DS), and AiRace xeno(3DS) are time trial/survival racers and are indeed very different in gameplay(though similar in graphic style)

but AiRace(DSi) is very similar, as it's one of the few other proper "airplane racers".
although its graphic style is quite different, it's the least "sci-fi" of the series using propellor airplanes.
(only other "airplane racer" i know of is M.A.C.H. Modified Air Combat Heroes, unfortunately it's a UMD-only psp game)

Lifespeed's story mode was a big disa...[to be continued]

Re: Super Bomberman R's Retail Price Has Finally Been Confirmed

thedicemaster

I'm pleasantly surprised, in Europe we're practically getting it tax-free.
conversion based on the UK price would mean €58 incl. tax, and conversion based on the US price would be €46 excl. tax.
€49,99 incl. tax is better than the €55-€60 i was expecting.
is there a reason why the € price isn't included in the article?

still a lot for bomberman though.

Re: Hardware Classics: Pokémon Mini

thedicemaster

i got it twice.
i think i managed to grab the last one for sale in a toy store(totodile blue) but they didn't have any games for it anymore so i only had the included pokemon party mini.
it died in an unfortunate washing incident, totodile might've been a water type but it wasn't waterproof.
a few years later i found a decent used one online, blue again, and this time i also bought pokemon pinball mini.
it did have some cosmetic damage, but i did some parts swapping with my drowned mini.
and just last month i bought pokemon tetris.
the only thing i'm missing is korobeiniki(tetris theme A).

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th March (Europe)

thedicemaster

@vitalemrecords the 3DS isn't powerful enough to emulate DS, and has to resort to "ds mode" which switches the 3DS to use only DS components and firmware with the exact same limitations as the original DS.
since the DS didn't have a memory card, this DS mode also cannot work with a memory card.
without access to the memory card, where are you going to load the games from?

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th March (Europe)

thedicemaster

@JohnG sure it can be made to run, either with various graphic glitches or running at 5fps.
the (n)3DS lacks the hardware to process complex 2D environments through the GPU, and has to use the CPU to compensate.
for snes emulation this means a lot more power is needed to get graphics to work properly.
power the n3ds barely has, and the old 3ds doesn't come close to.

Re: Weirdness: Homebrew Enthusiast Gets Windows 95 Working on the New Nintendo 3DS

thedicemaster

@burninmylight it's better to do it straight up without going through another emulator.
mGBA works on all hacks and runs all games at playable speeds(most at full speed with audio glitches)
for kernel hacks there are better options like dynarec-capable emulators or GBA VC injection(replace the rom in a VC game with a gba rom, making it run in the native compatibility mode)

@Patriplexity I had linux on my DSlite a few years ago.
the gui was barely usable though, and it needed an extra RAM cartridge(like the opera browser slot2 card)

Re: Reminder: There's Only One More Week Left To Vote In The Super Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot

thedicemaster

I had originally voted for inkling, but that both became less likely and less needed after they released the inkling mii outfit.
I have a good looking inkling mii-gunner in my game now, no real ink attacks but it's close enough.

I'd like to see some very different characters, but they should still have a strong connection to nintendo.
characters like goku(dbz) and sora(kh) don't seem right.
dbz games are brought out on all platforms, and kh has only had spin-offs/sidestories on nintendo handhelds with no console or main series games.

Re: Nintendo's Japanese YouTube Channel Serves Up a Musical Splatoon Treat, Devil's Third and Retro Goodness

thedicemaster

@mid_55 @SKTTR @stipey jam with the band is the european release of daigasso band brothers DX, the 2nd version of the game.
it's nearly identical, with only a few songs replaced by different ones and "only" 50 (free) dlc slots instead of japan's 100.
before that japan got daigasso band brothers, which had less songs and game modes but did get an expansion pack that could be loaded through the gba slot on the DS.

daigasso band brothers P is part 3 in the series.

Re: Review: Pokémon Rumble World (3DS eShop)

thedicemaster

@Uberchu Nintendo's idea was probably to give people the option to "pay off" the game.
by the time you've paid enough to buy a full game they remove the microtransactions and just give you some "premium" currency every day, to make it seem more like a regular/full game.
