Perhaps the most unexpected thing to come out of Ubisoft's E3 press conference was the news that Starlink is getting a special Star Fox ship as well as exclusive content for the Switch version of the game.
The legendary Fox McCloud will be joining the fight to liberate Atlus from tyranny, and we've now got a better look at what's included in the packaging. As well as the amazing Arwing craft you get two figures (one of which is McCloud, naturally) and some easily-lost weapons and accessories.
It has also been revealed that the game requires a 15GB download in order to play. Pre-orders are open now.
Starlink is Ubisoft's fresh take on the toys-to-life concept and boasts ships which can be customised on the fly. The game launches on October 16th.

An Arwing figurine!? Yes please!
"The legendary Fox McCloud will be joining the fight to liberate Atlus from tyranny"
Yikes, I didn't know Atlus was doing that badly!
The massive download kills this.
> It has also been revealed that the game requires a 15GB download in order to play.
And this is meant to be a physical release? C'mon.
But well, who cares if my game card only holds 5%? Maybe 10%? of the actual game... we have figurines, yay!
Not really concerned about the 15gb download, not a big deal imo. I'm moreso interested in learning the price of extras. Glad you can get them digitally so I don't end up with even more plastic in my house. Just wanna know what they're charging for them. I do like what we've seen so far though.
Not happy it has a 15gb download but it could be worse (I bet other systems have bigger files to install).
Happy that Ubisoft brought it to the switch at all considering most western AAA devs ignored this lovely system.
I don't really see what this has over all the other toys to life games? Why would I want to play with that Arwing model strapped to the top of my controller?
What's with Nintendo lending all their IP to Ubisoft all of a sudden? Is it like a "Thanks for supporting the Wii U" goodwill gesture, or is the idea that Nintendo fans are so insular and scared of leaving their comfort zone that the only way they'll buy a third-party game is if there are Nintendo characters in it? Judging from the amount of "Now I'm interested"-type comments I've seen, that's probably, sadly, true.
Got this preordered for a good price. Like $30 off, making it come to $70 plus tax. Can’t wait to add this to my collection.
@Haywired
I wanted this game since they announced it last year. It just got sold out before I could preorder it
"We can afford to make toys to sell you but we cant afford to put the whole game on a cart"
Cant wate for this. It was a game that got my attention last year... and now with fox its realy got my attention
Right in my weak spot: collecting useless Nintendo plastic.
15GB install?! No thanks.
Waiting for the Crystal edition... damn, I miss her.
@Nego They cant port Persona 5 to the Switch because of the Tirannic Sony.
So Fox please help them !!
For $75, it should've been all on the card me thinks. The download is a huge turn off for me.
"Game requires 15GB download in order to play" - for physical release.
Keep being cheap publishers. I hope you regret those decisions by seeing low sale numbers.
Another major release with no physical version, rather just a dongle for a digital version.
I don't understand if they're going to charge a high price with this plastic why can't they include a bigger cart and just add another £5 to the cost!
The whole point of the toy is something to own, so only including half the game defeats the purpose.
is there an adult version were I can just shoot stuff using a controller? this is hardly on the go gaming.... sigh
@redd214 I believe its $10 for a two weapons pack, $8 for pilots, and $25 for a ship, that comes with a pilot and extra weapons.
Nintendo shouldn't allow physical release that require such a big download on day one.
Set preordered. Just need to wait till October now...
@Nego under the thumb of the decrepit Sega empire.
@Rhaoulos Yes they should not. I understand if we could use the extra download on SD card on any Switch but we can't even so that.
Therefore cartridge = playable game.
Stupid half-physical DRM dongle ...
@PhilKenSebben thank you!
@Ubik from what I read, once you scan the items once are unlocked digitally so you can still play on the go
@chardir all content is also available digitally, and the game can "remember" all the toys you've connected for a while so you don't always need to bring everything with you.
@redd214 starter pack items are unlocked permanently, separately purchased physical parts and ships are unlocked temporarily and require re-scanning after a while.(exact time is not yet specified)
@GraveLordXD The only reason I see that they do this is marketing in form of shelf space.
Other than that there is ZERO reason to do this.
Some people may argue that this is for collectors purposes. What?! People want to collect some files on a cartridge that does NOT event work on its own?! An overpriced SD card with some bad tasting little sticker? Come on ...
Also those people must print their own cover for the case in order to hide the ugly sticker of shame in the top of the box art.
@Haywired Nintendo's connection to a game is like a seal of quality (as evidenced by Mario + Rabbids). Having been burned by the likes of EA, that's a perfectly understandable approach to game buying. I would add that indies are selling like gangbusters on Nintendo platforms, so the perception that Nintendo enthusiasts are myopic and unwilling to play non-Nintendo games isn't supported by data.
Is this game going to be online only?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
This may be the one game I buy that needs an extra download. I'm very hyped for this.
@Gold_Ranger No, don't think so
I've been interested in picking this up since LAST E3, when they announced it and said that you could just buy the parts digitally, not HAVING to get them physical. But this...this just sealed the deal absolutely. And by seeing the reactions around YouTube to the Star Fox reveal...Ubisoft did a VERY smart business thing with this. Switch will easily become THE definitive version of Starlink, and I'm betting will sell TONS more than both the Xbox and PS4 versions.
Normally that digital download for a physical game looks ridiculous, but when it's a game with that many physical items already in the box it's insanity. They could have added in a 16GB micro SD card - which you can get on Amazon for $6 retail, so Ubi could probably get them for $3 each wholesale - and slapped the Starfox insignia on it and called it a collectible as well, even raised the price another $5. You would still have the digital download but at least people buying a Switch wouldn't need to buy an extra SD card day 1 just for this game.
It's insulting.
Is this game playable without the plastic tat?
£70 with the Arwing isn’t too bad so long as you don’t need it to play the game. I’d happily pay £40 just to download the /whole/ game
Something tells me I would be the only one exicted if they Activision did announce a new skylanders game
@Haywired they aren’t only lending their up to Ubi, they have been doing it for years and increasing it. Tekken, Hyrule Warriors, Starlink, etc. I think this one makes absolute sense.
The companies are reciprocating too with Smash. I’m sure there will be Ubi characters in the new Smash. Either or both Rabbids and Rayman.
I just want the Arwing figure!
SO then this must mean instead of a star fox racing it could be... bring me back to Mute City baby!
I got it preordered. Looks like a solid package overall and I won't have to purchase all the physical toys, I can just get them digital. The DL sucks as I'm almost done filling my 32 GB. Other than getting a bigger memory card, maybe Nintendo can do External Hard drive support.
@bolt05
Yup, I won't buy any Switch game that requires a partial download to function.
Just for the US, right? Cannot preorder in Europe... aaaaaand what about that partial download?
Looks cool to me. Who cares about the download, mini SD cards are cheap.
@chardir You don't have to strap anything to the controller if you don't want to, seeing that you can buy everything digital ingame.
Pre-ordered!!! This is the closest thing I'll get to an Arwing amiibo. When this was announced, I kept refreshing Best Buy Canada until it went live. As an interesting side note for other Canadians that are interested, Starlink is eligible for the Best Buy Canada 30% discount they're running for E3 2018 games and it includes everything mentioned in this article!!!
you better be able to play without all that plastic crap!
I’m excited - but, I hope there won’t be a very limited supply just for them to become another target for scalpers!
Requires a big download, you only get some child's toys when you buy it... save this kinda treatment for the 12 year olds. I have zero interest in this.
I get all the complaints about the 15GB download I have yet to get Bayonetta 2 on Switch because you have to download one game .I've read Nintendo is expanding Switch's gamecard memory to 64GB of space but I believe that companies will continue this jerk move of making gamers download to their systems because it is such a money saver for them and yes you can get a huge SD card for your Switch but when you pay over 75.00 for a game it shouldn't require you to download 15GB of space to your system, does anyone know the file size of the game yet ? All that aside the game does look fun and the inclusion of StarFox is awesome.
In honor of this game costing $75 and requiring a 15GB download I bought Starfox Zero and Starfox Guard today boxed retail new for $5.00.
not sure what's with all the comments.. ok so there is a download . Wow. This is a game with toys and other stuff for $75, basically like a collector special edition that can cost $99 or more usually. That's great.
I usually purchase physical only, but considering how fun this game looks, I've decided to buy the game digitally and put the whole 23GB+ behemoth onto my microSD card. All I'd need to worry about is the integrity of my Switch, for if I ever need to replace the console, I'll have to re-download the game onto the microSD card in the new Switch, then bam, got the full game again.
That 15GB required download of the core game on the physical version, I'll never agree to. It defeats the purpose of having a physical version when the core game in its entirety is not on there.
I don't care I'm still getting it! I waited a long time to play Earth and Beyond again and this is the one I'm gettibg for my Switch! Thank you Ubitendo!
there i bought a new memory card for my switch ok? i got it! what else? what else do you want me to do?
@Pokefanmum82
I planned to get it for Xbox but I saw the Arwing for the switch version and went for that instead.
