@LEGEND_MARIOID the issue is that they're apparently using a port of the PC version of space invaders extreme, space invaders extreme 2 was only ever released on the DS(with a "lite" version as DSiWare). that means their options were to remake the entire game in the PC version's engine(a lot of effort), port the DS version and have a sequel that is vastly inferior to the original in the same collection, or give us a low resolution DS port of both.
a complete HD remake of space invaders extreme 2 would've been nice, but is a bit much to ask for a game collection. the alternatives wouldn't really make anyone happy.
science may not be able to provide a definitive answer, but language agrees with the splatfest outcome.
if you go to a supermarket you can buy chicken eggs. what hatches from these eggs? nothing! and what about eggs with male chicks, that will grow into roosters? still chicken eggs. that means it isn't important what hatches from the egg, it's a chicken egg only because it was laid by a chicken. so it doesn't matter what point of evolution would be where the "proto chicken" line ends and the "chicken" line starts, the first chicken egg will always have been laid after the first chicken hatched.
so we can't determine what the first chicken egg and the first chicken are, but we can know in what order they first came into existence.
@DoktorTotenKopf there are plenty of options for handheld emulation-consoles at regular sizes, I think this is the 2nd at a keychain size. this isn't really meant as your main emulation device, but just something to kill time with whenever you have to wait for a few minutes somewhere.
@Buckyooliver they could never make it for that price. the outside may be tiny, on the inside is a fully functional emulation-console on par with the full-size ones sold for $75-$100 it can even do playstation games. it also has the most polished UI I've ever seen on an emulation-console, much cleaner than dingux.
@Silly_G it has different scaling modes, so you can choose how games are adjusted to the aspect ratio. they couldn't get a wide screen because nobody mass-produces them at that size, so they would've had to custom-order them at insane prices. the pocketsprite ran into a similar issue, where they had to choose between making it much bigger or using a low resolution screen. both use readily available smartwatch screens.

I remember someone running a little test not long after the switch was released. he got it to overheat, "docked"(dock internal wiring plugged into the switch, no plastic shell), with the cooling fan unplugged, wrapped in a towel. even then it took a few minutes of mario kart to get it to overheat(or rather, trigger overheating protection turning off the switch). just blocking the vents, or just unplugging the fan wasn't enough, he really had to sabotage all cooling to get it close enough that the overheat protection got triggered.
so the switch could operate purely on passive cooling, active cooling is just a precaution.

@okeribok it's ok according to the type-C standard. hdmi output is an optional part, and there are 5 different "alternate mode" options all with different video output methods so it's not like this "confusion" is created by Nintendo.
as long as Nintendo advertises that video output requires a Nintendo switch dock(which is what they're doing) I see no problem.
@okeribok @MaSSiVeRiCaN the switch itself is close enough to the type-c standard with charging that it will work with any type-C compliant charger. the type-C standard also allows for proprietary dock functionality, which the switch makes use of for video output.
the only problems are with non-compliant devices being used with the switch: non-compliant cables that let the wrong amount of power through due to an incorrect or missing resistor, these will fry ANY type-C device. and docks that force video output with incorrect signals as they use a badly reverse-engineered version of the switch proprietary dock communication method.
from Wikipedia regarding non-compliant cables: Many cables claiming to support USB-C are actually not compliant to the standard. Using these cables would have a potential consequence of damaging devices that they are connected to. There are reported cases of laptops being destroyed due to the use of non-compliant cables. Some non-compliant cables with a USB-C connector on one end and a legacy USB-A plug or Micro-B receptacle on the other end incorrectly terminate the Configuration Channel (CC) with a 10kΩ pullup to VBUS instead of the specification mandated 56 kΩ pullup, causing a device connected to the cable to incorrectly determine the amount of power it is permitted to draw from the cable.
from Wikipedia regarding extra modes(used primarily for video out): As of 2018, five system-defined Alternate Mode partner specifications exist. Additionally, vendors may support proprietary modes for use in dock solutions. Alternate Modes are optional;
psp games technically didn't need to be distributed through the playstation store, if signed with a demo key they'll run on any psp just by dropping the game folder on a memorystick. this is how you could get some foreign game demos, like the DjMax portable 2 demo, without an account in that region.

@BulbasaurusRex it wouldn't defeat the purpose. pure motion controls don't work for shooters, but using analog for turning and general aiming while using motion for precision and tracking works great.
otherwise you'd either have to spin around in your chair(which is only viable with VR) or use your entire controller as a giant free-floating analog stick.
using a mixed analog + motion aiming is also more natural. the analog controls are comparable to using your feet to turn around, and motion controls are like turning your head and directing your arms.
the only mistake splatoon 2 made was locking vertical aiming to motion-only when motion assisted aiming is enabled.
@Digimmortal I doubt they'll go full motion. if they do it like LoZ botw they don't need a re-center button, you control the center with analog and use motion for precision/tracking.

there are in particular 2 issues with lootboxes that can make them illegal.
first of all, the value of the contents is random. you may get a rare item that would cost a lot of money otherwise(if it's even available for direct purchase), or you might get something common(like a grey skin for your black gun). this is where child-oriented blind products differ, their contents is usually consistent in value. a kinder egg for example always contains chocolate, and 1 cheap toy. a trading card game booster always contains a set number of rare cards(usually 1), a set number of uncommon cards, and a set number of common cards. while aftermarket value may differ, the retail value of the content of a child-oriented blind product is always the same.
next up is resale, which is the biggest reason the Netherlands had issues with lootboxes. this doesn't apply to all lootbox games, but some of them allow trading the contents for real money. this, combined with the previous issue, means you may be able to sell your $5 lootbox contents for $50 or for only $0.50. allowing lootbox content to have real and random monetary value makes it gambling. the consistent retail value of child-oriented blind products means there's no gambling aspect.
@KayFiOS you really can't compare it to earthbound. the entire "game world" plays in a single real city(or rather city district which seems to have gained independent city status, but that's real world stuff) they changed a few names for landmarks, streets, and businesses slightly but most places really exist. the game is split up in "chapters"(days and weeks) with different streets opening up on different days(days are not real-time, a day is over when you beat the mission for that day/chapter)
and it is also unique in the combat system, with pins replacing weapons/spells(up to 6 can be equipped at the same time) and these pins all requiring a different gesture to activate(slashing, tapping, drawing, and holding different things) as an example, most telekinesis skills require a gesture(tap, slash, or dragging) on loose objects(cars, signs, etc.) while pyrokinesis(fire magic) requires dragging across empty ground, and force rounds(magic bullets) usually require tapping on or near the enemy.
another uncommon trait is that there aren't any real random battles(a few of the later days have a small chance of a single random battle when you enter a street) instead you "scan" to make enemy icons visible and tap them to initiate a fight. later on you can tap more than 1 icon to fight multiple battles in a row without recovering in between.
and the best thing about the game is that you get a lot of options for balancing risk and reward, allowing you to lower your level or increase enemy strength to increase the rewards you get.
@saintayu joycon controls simulate the touchscreen. and it wouldn't work with a regular controller because it's too big and heavy.
with 1 hand the uneven weight and large size would either hurt your arm or cause you to fling the controller through the room, and with 2 hands you'd lack the dexterity to make the quick movements required by the game.
and the one change the mobile version made in the battle system was to turn your partner(who in the original version already was an optional part) into an extra pin, the actual mechanics for using pins in battle remained exactly the same. supporting pro controllers would mean using buttons(taking away what made the battle system unique) or using the same pointer controls as the joycons, which would lead to a lot of frustration.
@saintayu inputting attacks just wouldn't be possible without completely overhauling the combat system, which in turn would destroy the gameplay. it's like expecting guitar hero to be made compatible with a dance mat because "guitar controllers and dance mats are both music game controllers" or DDR be made compatible with a guitar controller.
@Moonlessky but does captain toad require you to "scratch" back and forth very quickly? or draw a near-perfect circle in a split second? or repeatedly make slashing movements across your character?
@Cobalt your switch didn't come with any? this game only works with 2 joycon, so unless you broke or lost them there's no need to buy more.
@ALinkttPresent it's assumed that you can (optionally) control your partner using a 2nd joycon. while not official co-op, it would be easy enough to pass that joycon to someone else.
it would be nice if dedicated amazon.com links would be included in these lists. the links are always dead for me because amazon only sells (e-)books here.
@chardir all content is also available digitally, and the game can "remember" all the toys you've connected for a while so you don't always need to bring everything with you.
@redd214 starter pack items are unlocked permanently, separately purchased physical parts and ships are unlocked temporarily and require re-scanning after a while.(exact time is not yet specified)
"Do you think Nintendo intentionally used Gamevice’s ideas and violated its patent – or is this simply par for the course with large companies like Nintendo? " neither. nintendo didn't copy anything. gamevice's concept has 2 interconnected controller pieces. nintendo switch uses 2 separate unconnected controllers(no bridge) each communicating with the switch independently(no direct communication between the controllers)
@Yorumi it wouldn't surprise me if in a few days we'll start seeing files online for 3D printed versions of the toycons. even sooner for the simple ones, like the RC car design.
@Biff_ARMStrong a possible scenario: drug dealer receives package with drug-cartridges while not at home, so it gets left in front of his door. a thief walks by, and grabs the package hoping for something valuable. thief finds games, and sells them not realizing their valuable contents.

Re: Belgian Government Launches Criminal Investigation Into EA Over "Illegal" FIFA Loot Boxes
@HobbitGamer that would be enough for the Netherlands.
Belgium might still have an issue with the difference in value/rarity between "rewards".
Re: Belgian Government Launches Criminal Investigation Into EA Over "Illegal" FIFA Loot Boxes
there are in particular 2 issues with lootboxes that can make them illegal.
first of all, the value of the contents is random.
you may get a rare item that would cost a lot of money otherwise(if it's even available for direct purchase), or you might get something common(like a grey skin for your black gun).
this is where child-oriented blind products differ, their contents is usually consistent in value.
a kinder egg for example always contains chocolate, and 1 cheap toy.
a trading card game booster always contains a set number of rare cards(usually 1), a set number of uncommon cards, and a set number of common cards.
while aftermarket value may differ, the retail value of the content of a child-oriented blind product is always the same.
next up is resale, which is the biggest reason the Netherlands had issues with lootboxes.
this doesn't apply to all lootbox games, but some of them allow trading the contents for real money.
this, combined with the previous issue, means you may be able to sell your $5 lootbox contents for $50 or for only $0.50.
allowing lootbox content to have real and random monetary value makes it gambling.
the consistent retail value of child-oriented blind products means there's no gambling aspect.

another uncommon trait is that there aren't any real random battles(a few of the later days have a small chance of a single random battle when you enter a street) instead you "scan" to make enemy icons visible and tap them to initiate a fight.
later on you can tap more than 1 icon to fight multiple battles in a row without recovering in between.
and the best thing about the game is that you get a lot of options for balancing risk and reward, allowing you to lower your level or increase enemy strength to increase the rewards you get.
Re: The World Ends With You: Final Remix Won't Support The Switch Pro Controller
Re: The World Ends With You: Final Remix Won't Support The Switch Pro Controller
Re: The World Ends With You: Final Remix Won't Support The Switch Pro Controller
@Moonlessky but does captain toad require you to "scratch" back and forth very quickly?
or draw a near-perfect circle in a split second?
or repeatedly make slashing movements across your character?
Re: The World Ends With You: Final Remix Won't Support The Switch Pro Controller
Re: Over 1,000 Developers Want To Bring Games To Switch Using GameMaker Studio 2 Engine
@Peace-Boy @Cobalt $799 a year per console, or $1500 a year for all supported consoles.
Re: Guide: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For July And August
it would be nice if dedicated amazon.com links would be included in these lists.
the links are always dead for me because amazon only sells (e-)books here.
Re: Here's What You Get Inside Starlink's Star Fox Starter Pack For Nintendo Switch
Re: Federal Government Is Officially Investigating Nintendo For Possible Patent Infringement
"Do you think Nintendo intentionally used Gamevice’s ideas and violated its patent – or is this simply par for the course with large companies like Nintendo? "
neither.
nintendo didn't copy anything.
gamevice's concept has 2 interconnected controller pieces.
nintendo switch uses 2 separate unconnected controllers(no bridge) each communicating with the switch independently(no direct communication between the controllers)
Re: Japanese Musican Shows Us How To Rock The Piano In Nintendo Labo
@JTMnM there are only 5 tones built in(piano, cat, choir, old man, HD rumble) but using a waveform card you can generate custom tones.
Re: Replacement Labo Parts Are Now Available Direct From Nintendo
@thesilverbrick read again, each sheet is $1.50.
the $12 ones are actually for a complete toycon that consists of 8 sheets.
Re: Replacement Labo Parts Are Now Available Direct From Nintendo
@Yorumi it wouldn't surprise me if in a few days we'll start seeing files online for 3D printed versions of the toycons.
even sooner for the simple ones, like the RC car design.
Re: Random: Retro Games Collector Finds Drugs Smuggled Inside NES Cartridges
@Biff_ARMStrong a possible scenario:
drug dealer receives package with drug-cartridges while not at home, so it gets left in front of his door.
a thief walks by, and grabs the package hoping for something valuable.
thief finds games, and sells them not realizing their valuable contents.
