Last week, we reported on the news that Nintendo would be entering the process of sunsetting its DSiWare service, reflecting the end of the official sale of digital games on DS consoles. This news didn't come as a huge shock given the age of the service and with a new console just on the horizon, but it nonetheless was some mildly poignant news to receive. Now – if certain rumours are to be believed – it seems that Nintendo is also winding down with production of physical games for the DS.
A Canadian retailer called Video Games Plus just recently broke the news on Twitter, mentioning how Nintendo is stopping production of DS games across the globe. Of course, this is to be taken with a grain of salt until Nintendo itself comments on the issue, but it wouldn't be an entirely surprising development given that the 3DS – its successor – is likely well into the latter half of its own life cycle.

Thanks for the memories (Touch Generations series, Pokemon White, Dragon Quest IX, and many many more...).
I suppose I should finish to collect all the DS titles I want before their prices rise.
It's okay but they must offer the games for virtual console in 3ds Eshop.
I'm kinda surprised that Nintendo continued producing cartridges for the original DS for this long. I mean, I'd have thought that once the 3DS started ramping up the sales Nintendo would have shifted everything over to the current system.
Today I learned that Nintendo was still making DS cartridges. Hot dang.
I better find another copy of Bowser's Inside Story before my first cartridge fails me.
No wonder I still see brand new copies of some DS game at my local Walmart and Kmart.
Either way it probably won't drive the aftermarket prices TOO high, especially with the virtual console. I may want to find my old games though, and by that I mean find them in store because I lost them on a bus and need to replace most of them. The DS Transformers Games are a must, followed by the Lego games. Then I can look into other stuff like Chrono Trigger and Mario 64 DS. A lot of them will probably end up at Cash Converters in Australia for cheap; I got Mario Kart DS for $5!
@WireWare Isn't there a way to replace the batteries?
Great memories from the DS. Maybe I should finally get the Ouendan games considering how much I liked EBA. Same goes for 999 and GTA. These titles are probably the last DS games I genuinely want. I'm quite satisfied with my rather diverse collection.
Hmm, the only DS game I currently know of that I may want to get at some point is Front Mission. May have to pick it up at some point.
Now it would be time for them to offer more DS games on the Wii U VC.
Now how will we get Olaf's Quest 2?
@Vineleaf Ha ha ha
Now Capcom will never localize Ace Attorney Investigations 2!
Surely the prices would only rise for games that are stil in production? Which I don't think are too many, although Square Enix did another run for several of its games 1-2 years ago.
@MarinoKadame or the 3ds vc. i suspect all subsequent ds titles released will only be on the nx vc tho'.
There are still games that I want for the DS. Meteos, Rush Adventure, etc.....
This maybe the chance that the DS can outsell the PS2! Fingers crossed
oh well, if worst comes last, guess I'll have to rely on VC eshop.
When I saw Warioware Touched on My Nintendo for the 3DS eShop, I knew (and hoped) that they were adding another Virtual Console platform. I got the reward, 1st thing, for curiosity and it is recognized as a DSiware title. Of course there will be another back-stab with no cross-buy. Although, the cease of production was most definitely done for the amount of time that has passed I still see Nintendo trying to pull their base to Digital and they've made moves recently such as My Nintendo (obviously) and the Shadow Mewtwo card handouts. The only thing that doesn't make sense is the game+amiibo bundles with very recent titles such as Pokken and TP HD. I suppose the only thing someone can do is wait for the next batch of info to drop (April Direct?).
I think only AAA games were still being produced. I still saw new copies of games like Mario Kart DS, Mario Party DS, New Super Mario Bros etc. I don't think many third party companies were still pumping them out but Square Enix has had sales on new copies of their greatest DS games periodically, though. It's an impressive system and you can find a lot of great games for cheap. If you wanted to collect, you should start soon before prices go up (on rarer games).
@AwesomeAustin813 There wont be another direct until E3. We just had one a few weeks ago and E3 is two months away. If they did have one, it would probably be small and specifically focused on something.
@Braok I'm sure they'll port it to 3DS... Never.
What were they even producing up until now? =/
@SanderEvers So does that mean they're mostly safe?
@SanderEvers GBA cartridges don't need a battery either.
only a few cartridges have a battery, and it's only used for the RTC.
if that battery dies time stops, but saves will continue to work.

For those complaining about the whole DSI thing, a lot of people actually don't realise that you can save them to the SD card and then retrieve them later.
I know I sure as hell didn't realise it until I...embarrassingly...called up Nintendo.
@Alundra-1998 Infinite Space
I waited for the price to drop for Mario Kart DS before I bought it. By the time Mario Kart 7 came out, I gave up.
The picture above reminded me how much I loved the ds light. Remember trading in my phat for one, was like night and day, a great piece of kit
@Alundra-1998 Monster Tale was an excellent Metroidvania, although they are remastering it for the eshop.
Tetris DS is the best Tetris game ever made by a long shot, multiple different and inventive modes and all are excellent.
Yoshi Touch and Go gets a hard time from some for being "incomplete" but it's probably my favourite game on the system, it's a ridiculously fun high score chaser.
@Alundra-1998 get The World Ends with You! Great game right there.
Not surprising considering no new games are coming for the DS anymore anyways. Square Enix was too greedy to bring Blood of Bahamut and SaGa II & III to NA, Shining Force Feather and 7th Dragon were never touch by Sega for any regions, Xenosaga I & II were good but for some reason Monolith Soft kinda forgot about them in favor of Xenoblade and the Project X Zone games, and Namco is still in cave man land when it comes to releasing any of their DS Tales games over.
Really Namco you had like 4 Tales games for the DS (2 of them which are the same game with different art) and not a single one of them made it here, why even made them to begin with? Also Nintendo sucks for never localizing Soma Bringer and ASH, Level-5 brought Ninokuni for PS3 to everyone but kept the DS original in Japan for themselves because the Japanese loves handheld more than the PS3 (why it never got port to the PSP is anyone's guess considering that thing is kicking the DS's ass in Japan at the time), Marvel Entertainment failed to bring Luminous Arc 3 to any regions which is a surprise considering they had no problem with the first two, etc.
Anyways I had to say the DS games were great, some were unique in their own ways and brought many innovations to the system (The World Ends With You, Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Feel the Magic: XY/XX, etc.) but at the same time some were just there as either remakes (Final Fantasy III & IV, Dragon Quest Zenithia Trilogy, Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals, etc.) or ports (Chrono Trigger, Ultimate Mortal Kombat, Mega Man Battle Networks 5, etc.) with some decent (Black Sigil, Children of Mana, Lunar: Dragon Song, Kingdom Hearts: ReCoded & 358/2 Days, Nostalgia, Knights in the Nightmare, Mario Kart DS, etc.) to great (Radiant Historia, Henry Hatsworth, Phantasy Star Zero, Suikoden Tierkreis, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, etc.) games in between. Overall I say it was a blast during the DS generation and for it to last up til now is quite impressive so I'm okay with Ninty ending production of them knowing the 3DS is here to kept the legacy going.
Will definitely agree with the TWEWY (The World ends with you) suggestion. Amazing game.
I thought they had already discontinued making DS cartridges since so many titles have risen in price... Hopefully I will be able to get a copy of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin since the copies are running for so high now >.<
Guess I better be faster in getting the games I missed out on.
Even if they have there's so many around that they won't become hard to find for ages! But when I get some cash after I get my firie emblem special edition I'll be sure to grab the ones I want, that's what I've been doing with gamecube as they are getting rare I paid £50 for ttyd and £40 for star Fox assault as that might become rarer after zero comes out I'm not sure I'm just glad I've got it! I just played ace attorney 2 on a ROM and it's a real shame it never got localised! I'll have to find a way to put it on a DS cartridge and make my own box so it can go on the shelve with the rest of my ace attorney games! Thanks for the memories DS (Despite the fact there's probably still some you'll make for me haha)
One cartridge I should get my hands on still is the megaman zero collection, I never got to play them on GBA but the cart is already hard to find. I am glad i already own my Ace attourney investigations cart, too bad part 2 was never localized.
I really need to get Pokemon Black or White. Missed those due to illness. And Bowsers inside story always looked great and that Contra Style Aliens game, oh and some Final Fantasy - argh!
If anyone has not played The World Ends With You. It is amazing! It will wreck your DS screen tho.
I really should save up some money and get Radiant Historia before it runs out of stock...
better get round to buying that copy of Dragon Quest 6 then
@Alundra-1998
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes
@retro_player_22
Monolith has no power over the Xenosaga and Xenogears series as SE and/or Bamco owns those (I forget who owns what). Especially after they were majority bought by Nintendo and made Soma Bringer and Xenoblade.
As for the Tales games, they made them for Japan obviously, where of their diehard fans were/are. At the very least they remade Tales of Hearts for Vita and brought that over. Would be nice if they brought the Tales of the Tempest remake over as well.
@Alundra-1998 Harvest Moon Grand Bazaar is a great ds game to pick up and play for hours on end
DS is still one of my all-time favorite systems, and my favorite handheld. So many awesome games. I could name them all but I'd be here all day.
So Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver will now go up to $100+
Oh no! i wish Nintendo had some way of putting DS games on the 3DS Eshop........
@khululy I actually just got the Mega Man Zero Collection on Amazon for $17 new 2 months ago. It has gone up to around $30 now it seems...
I just snagged a game from 1984 for a little under $6, with relatively no hassle or searching. DS games have been mass-produced compared to these older cartridge games so I'm not terribly worried about finding older games.
This would be a good moment to introduce ds vc games for 3ds
If this is indeed true, maybe I should finally order Chrono Trigger from SE's online store.
It's kind of sad to see this happen, but it was bound to happen at some point. My favorite DS games were Dragon Quest 9, Pokemon SS, Pokemon PT, Explorers of Sky, and Sonic Rush for sure.
Guess everyone, including myself, better get paranoid and buy everything up for no reason except because of this news!!!!
Well I just bought ni no kuni so I'm good.
Ugh... I wouldn't mind if they would get more flexible with putting DS titles on 3DS virtual console instead of the Wii U. Though we now have "Warioware: Touched!" for 3DS V-console thanks to My Nintendo rewards so I guess it's a start.
@DarthNocturnal
Yea I know about that. It was 2 years ago...
Wow Nintendo over here is really late. I would love it if it happens since I absolutely loved the game and want to play it again but alas I don't have my old copy anymore. Probably my favourite Advance Wars game despite them abandoning the broken gameplay of Dual Strike, and comedy of the first 3 games (which I also loved)
But yea hopefully that happens. Atleast make DS titles as DSiware is great but then they have to go on system memory, and you can only have so many....
To me the DS was the greates game system ever.
May it rest in piece.
There are very few games in still planning on getting for it. Super Mario 64 DS mainly.
End of an era. Thanks for the memories.
well I better start ordering every DS game to ever exist
Hey, Nintendo is starting to allow downloadable DS games with WarioWare Touched being available on My Nintendo, but it's hardly a start given that it's locked behind a rewards program (meaning that you can't pay real-world currency for it) and that it's the only DS game currently on the service.
Unfortunately Nintendo doesn't think NA wants anymore Advance Wars because it did so poorly here last time. I say it was poorly timed release.
Now is perfect timing especially after F.E. success, since they're made by the same team, and very similar methods. Japan respoded well which is why they are beign offered it on WiiU.
@Aludra-1998 Definately
'Radiant Historia'
considering you played Chrono Trigger. (or Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon if you plan on playing F.E. Awakening of F.E. Fates.)
@SyFyTy
Well I would love a new Advance Wars to come out, but I'd love a traditional Advance Wars or a sequel to Days of Ruin, not something Awakening-ized. That probably won't even work with the series though...
Intelligent Systems has abandoned Advance Wars so far. Maybe their project after Fates?
I could not agree more. I like the 'traditional' styles on both AW & FE better myself... (IMO Fates is ruined for future (gen) potetial players) I dislike thier need to ' new & improve' everything. If it's not broke, don't fix it... This drive toward tying everyything to online or multiplayer is killing what made games of the past so great.
@ReshiramZekrom Woah, it's downloadable for 3DS?
@Sammychan Yeah, it is
Thanks for the memories, my trusty 2004 Nintendo DS (R.I.P.)
N+
The World Ends With You
Namco Museum DS
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Dementium: The Ward
Dementium II
Every Pokemon game released on the original Nintendo DS
Chrono Trigger
The Final Fantasy games released for the DS
The invention of the RS card (I never owned one, but one of my friends did.)
The ability to continue playing my GBA games (Megaman: Battle Network Series, DOOM and DOOM II, Super Mario Advance, Legends of Zelda: Four Swords, Pokemon Emerald (I begged for an Emerald remake for the 3DS, cause Emerald is a tad more difficult than Ruby and Saphire,) the introduction of that one cartrage that allowed you to turn your GBA into an MP3 player (that was the best one out there in my opinion, and I used it a lot!))
The spawning of Download Play (may the legacy live on as gamers ruin friendships in Mario Party through Download Play )
The first ever Resident Evil, ported over to the DS
History Channels Great Empires: Rome
Civilization (I was surpised when I found out that they ported this game to the DS, none the less it's safe to assume I snatched a copy, considering I'm a Civilization fiend)
Kirby Mass Attack
Nintendogs (thank god for this, I'd never would've got my little sister to be quiet otherwise!!)
And countless more. Thank you for the memories, Nintendo!! I'll be looking for Nintendo DS games, then, just to get the ones from my childhood. Also, being able to turn my 3DS into an MP3/MP4 was genius!! I use my 3DS as an MP3 player, and it's great!
Just don't let the Nintendo DS line of systems fade away, make sure every gamer in the future at least knows about it!!
@Alundra-1998
N+ (if you like platformers. I'd be careful if you pick this one up though. It starts out easy, but it gets insane pretty quick as some levels and even some of the episodes require pixel-perfect jumps.)
BTW, I got a PSP just to download and plaay the PlayStation classic that is Alundra. It's pretty much a Zelda clone, but it's a preety good one at that!!
@Aiodensghost O...M...G... I ABSOLUTELY LOOOOOOOOOVE THE GAME ADVENTURES OF ALUNDRA!!!
I am genuinely not a person that clicks like on comments out of the blue, but you get a like JUST for sharing a similar interest.
@Alundra-1998 I'm looking to get a disc version of the game, and to get Alundra 2 on disc as well. Because honestly, even though I have the digital, it might as well be like playing it on an emulator (cause lets face it: even though its from the PSN store, it's technacally emulation unless you play it off of the original disc. That and put it with the fact that I'm collecting PS1 games and it goes great!! So far, I managed to find hard copies of FFVIII and FFIX. Put my PS1 collection with my PS2 collection and I'll be even better, cause despite not having a PS1, I have a PS2 slim that I got when I was a kid still lying around, as well as a PS3 that I built out of parts of 3 PS3's their respective owners just wanted to chuck in the garbage. Alundra is a GREAT choice for PlayStation games and collectors alike, yet I have YET to see MetalJesus make note of it. So sad!)
@Aiodensghost Here are the PS1 games that I have.
They are all fully complete in box with manuals.
Sony PlayStation 1 Games

@Alundra-1998
GOD, I wish I had some of those!! You have a chunck of my childhood in there! I remember playing Crash Bandicoot when I was 4 on my older stepsisters' PS1! Regretablly, she sold it off with all of her games before I could buy it off of her and got a PS2. I got my PS2 when I was 10.
Like I said, I got FFVIII and IX. On the PS2 I managed to find FFX and FFXII (Collector's Edition [Complete with manuel, Bonus DVD, and the original tin-like case.]) As for the rest of my PS2 games, I managed to get Quake 3: Revolution, Need for Speed Carbon, Atari Antiology, Pinball Hall of Fame: Gotlieb Collection, GTA: San Andreas (NOTE: MY COPY HAS BEEN PATCHED, making its rating go up from Mature 17+ to Ao,) Thrill Kill (another Ao-rated game that I had the luck of finding one of the beta discs for on eBay. It's really a PS1 game.) There are a few that I can't name off of the top of my head, and honesty I doubt that since my little sister touched my PS2, I'll get most of my collection back, let alone the console itself.
That's fine as there is something new in the pipeline.
