Re: The Pokémon Company Releases Official Statement About Palworld

shoeses

The AI use of pre-existing Pokemon was more or less debunked, with the origins of it going back to someone reacting to a Buzzfeed article saying something along the lines of 'they look AI generated'. And naturally none of the people screaming fact checked this. That and Steam forces companies to state if the game was made using any AI assets, again, not like I'd expect them to know.

Capcom U.S.A. Inc. v. Data East Corp. showed you need more than similarities to have a case, and Fighter's History was way closer to SF2 than Palworld is to Pokemon. So if this goes to court I don't see TPC winning, and that's more wasted money that could've gone to making their own product better.

@nimnio "If you’re okay with enjoying a game that lacks originality and rides on the coattails of others, then you’re part of a bigger problem in the gaming industry." Ah yes, bigger problems in the gaming community like Soulslikes & Metroidvanias, entire genres that exist of the coattails and ideas of specific games. Can't wait to see 'em and the scum who enjoy them get removed TBH.

Re: Pokémon Fans Set Their Sights On Palworld's Monster Designs

shoeses

@McBurn That's the thing none of the critics or articles point out though - outside of catching monsters, it plays nothing like Pokemon. If anything the 'copied homework' as NintendoLife put it was copied from ARK - the same game but instead of dinosaurs there's monsters. Even then, most of the designs give off Neopets and Spectrobes vibes more than Pokemon as someone who loves anything with monsters as the focus.

Re: Pokémon Fans Set Their Sights On Palworld's Monster Designs

@RADMO Oh I do apologize, Meowth is based off the Japanese beckoning-cat (that I can't spell the actual name of), a different pre-existing thing based off a regular cat. Purrloin is just a regular cat. But I won't get angry at you or the other people screaming not knowing of any mythologies or legends who think Pokemon invented dragons & fairies.

Re: Pokémon Fans Set Their Sights On Palworld's "Rip-Off" Monster Designs

shoeses

@NatiaAdamo I think they'd have to prove that a game that plays nothing like Pokemon or any Pokemon Spin-Off is cutting into their sales. It's not as simple as it is with ROMs & hacks. Even if they did, it'd be a horrible look attacking another monster game and show not only that they have a monopoly on anything with monsters, but show that they WANT a monopoly on it too.

Re: Random: The 'Pokémon-With-Guns' Game On Steam Is Yet More Homework Copying

Any Shooter, but only while Doom was relevant: OMG it's a Doom clone!

An Entire Genre literally named, designed after, & lifting ideas directly from Metroid: OMG that's so cool and original, can't have enough of 'em!

Any game with any kind of ally or friendly monsters for the past 28 years: OMG it's a shameless Pokemon clone! Ignore the fact it plays nothing like Pokemon!

Re: Pokémon Developer Game Freak Trademarks 'PAND LAND'

shoeses

GameFreak would really benefit from some new talent - the ideas for things like new Pokemon & stories are still good, but the skill of the actual dev team is... less than desirable, especially for the #1 IP on the planet. More people with more up-to-par coding skill & better understanding of other games would have less of a burden on GameFreak for the Pokemon crunch & give the original devs more time for new projects.

Re: Pokémon TV App Is Being Discontinued Later This Year

Is this a case of an entire series being on YT via the Official Channel and this being a nothing burger? I know a lot of shows that have left services that are up in their entirety on YT like every Power Rangers Season and it's more important to make people aware of where it is rather than where it was.

Re: Is Dave The Diver An Indie Game? The Game Awards' Host Weighs In

shoeses

It's a bit of a Pandora's Box when deciding what is and isn't Indie, and it's why I almost always use 'Indie or small team/dev' instead of one or the other. Great example is Devolver Digital - they Publish and fund a lot of games, but a lot of those teams doing all the work are fairly small. Does that funding diminish the efforts of the teams dedicated to seeing their vision come true?

Re: New 'South Park: Snow Day!' Gameplay Trailer Is All About Co-Op, Combat And Cartman

shoeses

"Experience cooperative gameplay for the first time ever in a South Park game with up to three friends or ally bots - unleashing powerful, coordinated attacks on your foes."

This is factually wrong. I'm sure at least 2 of the N64 games had Splitscreen, but Tenorman's Revenge & Let's Go Tower Defense Play on 360 had co-op long before this. Tragic that Microsoft never made them backwards compatible or did ports, as they're gonna be lost forever for most once the digital stores close next year.

Re: Pokémon's COO Wants To Keep Franchise Going For "Hundreds Of Years"

shoeses

Like CoD and Assassin's Creed, regardless of the series quality, Pokemon is now too big to fail. The games can be terrible and broken, the anime boring and unwatchable, the TCG unbalanced and expensive - and people will still eat it up just because it's Pokemon.

But in a bittersweet way, I'm almost glad. I'm trying and playing more games than I was when Pokemon was at its peak, and the RPGs are so refreshing in comparison. Ironically really excited to see what the next Digimon game is that's having a smooth development from what Bandai's said - the Cyber Sleuth games, while they could be a bit grindy, were exactly what I wanted from Pokemon. Would 100% both again if the RPG To Do List wasn't already way too big and still growing!

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon X & Y - The Series' Greatest Paradoxes

shoeses

I know I'm in the minority, but I hated ORAS, and only liking the introduction of Megas & the Fairy-Type in XY make Gen 6 my least favorite by a landslide. Even back then I thought, 'well maybe I just have rose-tinted glasses for RSE'. Nope - went back, played Emerald, and had a blast. There were still instances against some Gym Leaders, the E4, & Wallace where I needed to think or use items. I haven't needed to use Items since the start of Gen 6. And I can't help but double-down on this opinion since the only main series games I've truly enjoyed since Gen 5 were Let's GO & Legends: Arceus.

If anything the start of the 3D games' debatable quality is bittersweet for me. I feel almost nothing but contempt for current Pokemon now, but it driving me away has also gotten me to try other RPGs and different genres that I would've never touched before. At least they can't take away the old games, as much as they go out of their way to make them unavailable... gonna be like losing a pet when my Colosseum disc gives out. Had that sucker since I was 5 - my first game ever.

Re: Talking Point: Which Classic Cartoons Deserve The Shredder's Revenge Treatment?

shoeses

Transformers is untapped potential for a Beat 'Em Up between the moves you could do like in Devastation due to transformation, vast Stage choices you could have from the show and movie's locales, & enemy and Stage Hazard varieties you'd get from the enemies both having Bot & vehicle forms. And with how many iconic characters there are and how many characters there are in general, they could have great boss fights and squeeze in a mid-boss in each Stage. The potential is ridiculous in the right hands.

Think The Simpsons, X-Men/Marvel, & Spider-Man (there's as many old games for the Wall Crawler as the rest of Marvel) could just get Cowabunga Collection equivalents and that would satiate most people.
