Re: Site News: Nintendo Life Turns 20 Today!

Without a doubt, my favorite website of all time. After I first started visiting 15 years ago, I've rarely missed a day since. Thanks for all your hard work in running this site. I feel like I can always get from you the info that I need.

Re: Iconic Publication Game Informer Is Closing Down After 33 Years

It's sad to hear this. After EGM and Nintendo Power, GI was my favorite magazine. And was the only gaming magazine I knew still going. Like others here, I recently subscribed and liked getting them in the mail each month, like I did in the 80's and 90's. Are there other print gaming magazines still around, at least in the US?

Re: Poll: So, Do You Prefer Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Or Tears Of The Kingdom?

The crafting in TOTK takes a while to get used to, but once you're comfortable with it and understand the possibilities, it's a lot of fun. I feel TOTK is the better game with a lot more to do, but it can't replace the magic of playing BOTW for the first time and experiencing that revolution. Like how it was playing Ocarina of Time for the first time. Or the first Zelda all the way back in the 80's.

Re: Poll: What Switch Online Rare Game Are You Playing This Weekend?

sc100

I chose Blast Corps. Man, what a unique game. But also enjoyed my time with RC Pro-Am and Killer Instinct. Now I'm really anxious to see the OG Battletoads drop onto NSO soon. I remember shelling out $75 for that one back in 1991. Pretty much the last big NES release before the Super NES came out.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Donkey Kong

I would be interested to hear the reasoning behind why Mario is white and baby blue in the NA version. One of those Nintendo mysteries I've wondered about for decades.

Re: Video: Let's Talk About Those Switch 2 Rumours, Then

sc100

I've always thought second half 2024 would be the debut of the next system and it seems to be playing out that way. I am expecting full backwards compatibility with the Switch, still a hybrid system, but with some sort of new "twist" to make it stand out.

Re: Anniversary: Nintendo Famicom, The NES' Japanese Sibling, Is 40 Years Old

sc100

So many memories instantly crop up when I think about the NES and playing it as a 7-10 year old: the massive leap up from the Atari 2600, the genre-defining gameplay of SMB and Zelda, the wonder of exploring Nintendo Power every 1-2 months, calling the Nintendo counselors hotline, The Wizard and that SMB 3 reveal. I could go on and on. People should watch the Nuts for Nintendo special on YouTube to understand how much Nintendo mania had swept the US by Christmas 1988. Basically everybody I knew played Nintendo back then. I don't care who you were. Never experienced anything like that since. What an era.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Busier Hyrule Is Making Me Miss BOTW

Using the same base map for this game has definitely felt like both a blessing and a curse. It is cool to see how areas have changed over the intervening years. But there are also so many areas that feel the same and there's not the same sense of discovering a new world like in BOTW. I don't like the depths and sky islands as much as the surface. There are many cool additions, however. And the story seems better. It's definitely a 10/10 game but I'm still wondering if it would have been better for this game to have been entirely new rather than a sequel. I'll enjoy it regardless.

Re: Expect More Open-World Zelda Games Going Forwards, Suggests Eiji Aonuma

sc100

We definitely need both. Many beautiful ways to showcase the Zelda franchise and have some diversity. Personally, I'm hoping the next Zelda will be a smaller title like A Link Between Worlds, but with a different map. And that would take a few years to develop. Definitely don't like the idea of waiting 6+ years in between every Zelda game.

Re: Soapbox: Game & Watch Still Scratches A Very Particular Itch, And I Need More

sc100

The only G&W I remember playing was the 1989 Zelda one, which came out right around the time the Game Boy came out. Just like Nintendo's early arcade games, there's a beautiful simplicity about the G&W games that just can't be replaced by the modern era's huge games. I like getting engrossed in huge worlds that take hundreds of hours to explore, but sometimes I just want to play a quick game of something that has addictive gameplay. DK and Mario Bros. tend to be my go-to games, along with the G&W Galleries.

Re: Game Boy And GBA Coming To Switch Online Today

sc100

Been waiting for this for a very long time. Glad they added GBA at the same time as GB. And no price increase. YES!!! We may see DS games before Switch 2. Or Master System/Saturn. Hopefully then GameCube/3DS/Dreamcast for Switch 2. A Wii app would be amazing but the file size would get very large. Maybe still technically doable.

Re: Poll: What Was The Best Wii U Launch Game?

sc100

Nintendo Land is such a unique title. Nintendo has never released any other game like it before or since. It simply stands on its own. I had to go with that one. Probably my favorite Wii U experience, followed by Lego City Undercover.

Re: Poll: So, Animal Crossing: New Leaf Or New Horizons - Which Do You Like Best?

sc100

I think it comes down to what you like most about the AC experience. For me, I really like customization, so New Horizons is my favorite. The ability to truly customize my island, with terraforming and putting items on the ground, opens up a whole new world over what New Leaf offered. The much streamlined interface, like the storage system and wardrobe option for getting dressed, was also a big improvement. The 20-month rollout to version 2.0 was pretty brutal, though. It should have been a year maximum.

Earlier games, especially City Folk and before, had more interesting personalities for the villagers. People who like interacting with the villagers will generally like the earlier games.

New Leaf is amazing as well, though, and was a huge improvement over City Folk. I miss some of the music, more Nintendo-themed items and the tree in your square that keeps growing. And I also liked the 3D effect.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Piece Of Music In A Nintendo Game?

sc100

I knew I wasn't the only one who really liked Gusty Garden.

Other fav soundtracks of mine: Kirby's Epic Yarn, Gumshoe, Super Mario Land, Zelda's Lullaby, City Folk 1am, New Leaf 1am, New Horizons 1am, Punch Out!! cycling cutscene, Excitebike, Duck Hunt title theme

Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Legend Of Zelda Game?

sc100

I was 7 when the original Zelda came out. Although I don't remember if I got it in 1987 or 1988. The gold box and cartridge were a BIG deal at the time. It really told you that this game was no ordinary game. It was special. And it definitely stood up to that reputation. I hadn't played anything like it at the time. The sense of exploration was incredible, trying to find all that was hidden in this new world. I don't think the series managed to capture that same sense of exploration again until Breath of the Wild.
