While I definitely prefer New Leaf and New Horizons, one thing I miss about the older games are the more unique personalities of the villagers. Starting with New Leaf, you really noticed them starting to merge. That's the main thing I want them to bring back for the next game.
Yes, an Activision expansion would be amazing. And a Nintendo one should also happen. They had games like DK and Mario Bros. on Atari's systems and Nintendo initially wanted them to distribute the NES. Would be interesting to explore that partnership more.
Without a doubt, my favorite website of all time. After I first started visiting 15 years ago, I've rarely missed a day since. Thanks for all your hard work in running this site. I feel like I can always get from you the info that I need.
Definitely one of the biggest curios in Nintendo's history. And it sucks that Yokoi left Nintendo soon after the thing bombed and that was his last real contribution there. The man built modern Nintendo in so many ways.
@KaiserGX This is also what I'm really hoping for next. With Gumshoe included. And releasing both ROB games. Re-releasing ROB itself might be a bit overkill but I'd probably still buy it.
It's sad to hear this. After EGM and Nintendo Power, GI was my favorite magazine. And was the only gaming magazine I knew still going. Like others here, I recently subscribed and liked getting them in the mail each month, like I did in the 80's and 90's. Are there other print gaming magazines still around, at least in the US?
Wow, 7 games. That's more like it. Never actually played DK Jr Math and Urban Champion. Will finally try those. Would love to see the light gun games come next, especially Gumshoe. No idea why Star Tropics 2 hasn't appeared yet.
The crafting in TOTK takes a while to get used to, but once you're comfortable with it and understand the possibilities, it's a lot of fun. I feel TOTK is the better game with a lot more to do, but it can't replace the magic of playing BOTW for the first time and experiencing that revolution. Like how it was playing Ocarina of Time for the first time. Or the first Zelda all the way back in the 80's.
I chose Blast Corps. Man, what a unique game. But also enjoyed my time with RC Pro-Am and Killer Instinct. Now I'm really anxious to see the OG Battletoads drop onto NSO soon. I remember shelling out $75 for that one back in 1991. Pretty much the last big NES release before the Super NES came out.
After dealing with Metroid Prime 4, this wait doesn't seem that bad, especially if it's first half 2025. Seems like a lot of love and care is being put into this.
I would be interested to hear the reasoning behind why Mario is white and baby blue in the NA version. One of those Nintendo mysteries I've wondered about for decades.
I mostly wanted to see the Wuhu tracks. Something so serene about that island. And it brings back fond memories of Wii Sports Resort and Pilotwings Resort.
That gold box, and especially the gold cartridge, back in 1987 screamed that this was something special, no ordinary game. Man how right that turned out to be.
I've always thought second half 2024 would be the debut of the next system and it seems to be playing out that way. I am expecting full backwards compatibility with the Switch, still a hybrid system, but with some sort of new "twist" to make it stand out.
So many memories instantly crop up when I think about the NES and playing it as a 7-10 year old: the massive leap up from the Atari 2600, the genre-defining gameplay of SMB and Zelda, the wonder of exploring Nintendo Power every 1-2 months, calling the Nintendo counselors hotline, The Wizard and that SMB 3 reveal. I could go on and on. People should watch the Nuts for Nintendo special on YouTube to understand how much Nintendo mania had swept the US by Christmas 1988. Basically everybody I knew played Nintendo back then. I don't care who you were. Never experienced anything like that since. What an era.
I've often dreamed of GC and 3DS on NSO, but Nintendo can clearly make a lot more money releasing them separately. Several have noted the recent GC re-releases, but Nintendo also announced Luigi's Mansion 2 is being re-released next year. So that's clearly the direction they're going.
Using the same base map for this game has definitely felt like both a blessing and a curse. It is cool to see how areas have changed over the intervening years. But there are also so many areas that feel the same and there's not the same sense of discovering a new world like in BOTW. I don't like the depths and sky islands as much as the surface. There are many cool additions, however. And the story seems better. It's definitely a 10/10 game but I'm still wondering if it would have been better for this game to have been entirely new rather than a sequel. I'll enjoy it regardless.
Two games with this map is enough. Nintendo is so creative, I'd love to see them come up with a totally new map that brings a brand new experience. Especially when these games take so long to make now.
We definitely need both. Many beautiful ways to showcase the Zelda franchise and have some diversity. Personally, I'm hoping the next Zelda will be a smaller title like A Link Between Worlds, but with a different map. And that would take a few years to develop. Definitely don't like the idea of waiting 6+ years in between every Zelda game.
The only G&W I remember playing was the 1989 Zelda one, which came out right around the time the Game Boy came out. Just like Nintendo's early arcade games, there's a beautiful simplicity about the G&W games that just can't be replaced by the modern era's huge games. I like getting engrossed in huge worlds that take hundreds of hours to explore, but sometimes I just want to play a quick game of something that has addictive gameplay. DK and Mario Bros. tend to be my go-to games, along with the G&W Galleries.
Been waiting for this for a very long time. Glad they added GBA at the same time as GB. And no price increase. YES!!! We may see DS games before Switch 2. Or Master System/Saturn. Hopefully then GameCube/3DS/Dreamcast for Switch 2. A Wii app would be amazing but the file size would get very large. Maybe still technically doable.
Nintendo Land is such a unique title. Nintendo has never released any other game like it before or since. It simply stands on its own. I had to go with that one. Probably my favorite Wii U experience, followed by Lego City Undercover.
I think it comes down to what you like most about the AC experience. For me, I really like customization, so New Horizons is my favorite. The ability to truly customize my island, with terraforming and putting items on the ground, opens up a whole new world over what New Leaf offered. The much streamlined interface, like the storage system and wardrobe option for getting dressed, was also a big improvement. The 20-month rollout to version 2.0 was pretty brutal, though. It should have been a year maximum.
Earlier games, especially City Folk and before, had more interesting personalities for the villagers. People who like interacting with the villagers will generally like the earlier games.
New Leaf is amazing as well, though, and was a huge improvement over City Folk. I miss some of the music, more Nintendo-themed items and the tree in your square that keeps growing. And I also liked the 3D effect.
Played it every day since it came out. Then again, I've basically played AC every day since City Folk. It's just a part of my daily life now. With NH, I have endless possibilities to keep customizing my island, which I really like.
I knew I wasn't the only one who really liked Gusty Garden.
Other fav soundtracks of mine: Kirby's Epic Yarn, Gumshoe, Super Mario Land, Zelda's Lullaby, City Folk 1am, New Leaf 1am, New Horizons 1am, Punch Out!! cycling cutscene, Excitebike, Duck Hunt title theme
I loved the SNES version but somehow never got around to playing this one during the N64 Era. And for some reason Nintendo never released this for the Wii or Wii U virtual consoles. Looking forward to experiencing this for the first time.
I was 7 when the original Zelda came out. Although I don't remember if I got it in 1987 or 1988. The gold box and cartridge were a BIG deal at the time. It really told you that this game was no ordinary game. It was special. And it definitely stood up to that reputation. I hadn't played anything like it at the time. The sense of exploration was incredible, trying to find all that was hidden in this new world. I don't think the series managed to capture that same sense of exploration again until Breath of the Wild.
Without question one of the most amazing experiences in video game history, where you had never experienced anything like it before. Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter 2 are some of the only games I can compare it to on that level, at least 1985 onwards.
The Gameboy family will likely get announced in September, like they've done for all the previous additions. GB and GBC for standard NSO and GBA for Expansion Pak.

Re: Review: Klonoa: Empire Of Dreams (GBA) - One Of The System's Best Still Plays Like A Dream
Shame I never really knew about this game back in the day. Love getting to know about these kinds of games now through NSO.
This game originally came out in the US on September 11, 2001? Wow.

Is the cardboard version a low-cost replacement for the main unit?

Battletoads for NES also comes to mind, the last major title before the Super NES came out.
Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy Library With Five More Classics
Great to finally see GB games coming out on a regular basis now.
Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's Game Boy Library With Three More Classics
All three were launch day games for the Game Boy. Interesting take on an update. Regardless, glad to revisit all three, which I got back in 1989.

I voted for Luigi's Mansion. But Earthbound could also be amazing.
Re: Miyamoto: Nintendo Is "Always" Working On Mario, But Isn't Ready For The Next Game Reveal Just Yet

I remember buying Battletoads in 1991 for $75. $70 for Zelda in 2023 is a no-brainer.
Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Service With GoldenEye 007
Still seems as fun as it was 25 years ago. The sharper visuals definitely help. Now I'm just hoping we keep getting more Rare games.
