Following on from the release of Wave Race 64 in August, Nintendo has now announced Pilotwings 64 will be making its way to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack N64 library next week on October 13th.
This more relaxed take on the flight simulator genre was first released on the Nintendo 64 in 96/97, and requires players to earn licenses by completing tasks in gliders, a gyrocopter, and even a jet pack.
The same title has also been confirmed as the next title for Japan's NSO Expansion Pack service. There's a trailer to go with it:
The remaining titles in Nintendo's current batch of N64 NSO games include Mario Party, Mario Party 2, Mario Party 3, Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, 1080 Snowboarding, Excitebike 64 and also GoldenEye 007. Japan will be getting Harvest Moon 64, too.
Here's the list of games still on the way to the service in 2022 and 2023:
Looking forward to this one? Comment below.

Why so much, randomly, all at once? Pokemon Scarlet & Violet video, Mario movie trailer, and now Pilotwings. There's still time Nintendo! Give us more today!
Was hoping for Goldeneye given it's still Bond day in the US. Oh well, at least this pretty much confirms they're releasing the Mario Party games all together (e.g. 1 in November, 2 in December, 3 in January) which gives hope for Superstars DLC.
Dammit ...I wanted Mario Party this month.
Next is the mario party wave
@Royalblues Well ever since the service started, no games was ever removed.
A trailer as sensual as this game deserves. Absolutely wonderful.
Framerate looks quite improved. I'm hyped to play through it yet again. It's a lovely game.
@Royalblues I suppose it’s not impossible, but more likely with 3rd party stuff not Nintendo’s own titles considering the subscription/licensing model in play here.
Question : Looking forward to this one ?
Me : No. I already have Wii Sports Resort on Wii with Pilotwings inside.
@Vil
Least given that there are only two more months left after October...that means MP1 in November, MP2 in December and MP3 In January most likely.
No mention in the article of how amazing this trailer is?
The trailer was just brilliant!
"Oddly specific"
😂
Also it looked like it was running at 60fps which would be amazing!
First game I 100% on the N64. Can't wait to jump back in! Thinking we will get GOLDENEYE in November around the original release of the movie or Christmas Day.
Hi NintendoLife,
Regarding The Pokemon giveaway, I understand restricting entries for a competition to the appropriate region, but it seems unnecessarily harsh to not allow people from other parts of the world to comment at all.
@Grumblevolcano The Goldeneye announcement is so strange if you ask me. The Japanese trailer mentioned 2023, and if we are waiting until after these games it could be mid 2023, so why announce the game so early? Why not release when it is being emulated? Why not just announce a release date?
Crazy to think they had the perfect day to launch it this year, being the 25th anniversary, and yet they somehow botched it.
Seems rather baffling putting this out now instead of going with Mario Party 1 so you can space out it and 2 a bit.
what a odd trailer for an old game.
but please do more of this Nintendo.
i should try out Pilotwings sometime. I've seen videos of the game years ago, but I've never got around to buy it.
So Nintendo are not even releasing one N64 game a month, no game in September. Glad I didn't upgrade my NSO now!
Lol, that trailer. Never played the game but the trailer really sold me!
Somehow I actually forgot Pilotwings 64's characters looked like that lol. I wish they could come back.
I loved the SNES version but somehow never got around to playing this one during the N64 Era. And for some reason Nintendo never released this for the Wii or Wii U virtual consoles. Looking forward to experiencing this for the first time.
Now why did I expect Goldeneye to release as the first game out of all of these....?
Did we even get a game in September? I don't think we did. That's probably why.
I forgot to mention this earlier but whats with the sensual music in this trailer? Lol.
For anyone interested here is the JP trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2yuBO9OsWc
Oddly enough I've never played this game. I played the SNES version back in the day.
Also I did have (probably still do somewhere) the 3DS version.
Looking forward to giving this one a try
I love Pilotwings! Hope a new game in the series is in the works for Switch!
Also that sultry sensual trailer is amazing and so left-field I love it! Please do more like this Nintendo!
... Wun can only hope.
GIVE US GOLDENEYE! 🧐
@Coolmusic I've added this to the article.
Pilotwings 64......... just never thought I would see it outside of buying the original.
@Liam_Doolan: Thanks!
I wish they would give us HM 64 outside of Japan.
Why did they pull out the sexy coffee shop voice over for Pilotwings of all things? I mean I'm not necessarily against it but it is a bit strange.
I'm excited to play PW 64 for the very first time, but a part of me was really hoping we'd get Mario Party this month. Though I do suppose whenever it does come out, it will be closer to my birthday so I guess it's a lot more fitting in that regard.
@Mrkittyhead Wasn't aware Avalanche was in the same category as Strength and Fly
Are these the characters that gave birth to Mii’s?
Pilotwings 64 is great. But it's not Goldeneye is it?
Ignoring all the whiny comments to say how much I loved this game growing up. Lazy Sundays with Pilotwings are one of my favourite memories.
@Hank_Scorpio It's better, it hasn't aged like sour milk. Goldeneye controls are hard to go back to.
And seems it's running at 60fps! First time Nintendo's done that if so. It looks like a gigantic improvement from the original which I think ran at about 20 - 30
Haven't played Pilotwings 64 since the week it released! Played it round a mate's house. Will look forward to revisting.
I'm glad Goldeneye is happening... but Nintendo are turning me against them by not telling me if it's 2022 or 2023. The whole "Coming Soon" is a really bad approach when you've given every other N64 release at least a year.
Add to that the fact Japan's announce had Goldeneye as 2023 and its just unnecessarily confusing for everyone.
It's a 25 year old game... just tell us the release window already.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 please just dlc and add to all stars. Missed opportunity there.
@Dr_Luigi
Really think or say dreaming they have something up their sleeve for the movie release tie in.
The movie / game tie in and sales would be astonishing and set new records.
A new Mario 3d or 2d platform game. Surely they can’t miss this opportunity that rarely comes round.
Very happy about this, Pilotwings 64 is great!
@Clyde_Radcliffe I play Goldeneye pretty regularly so there’s nothing to adjust to. I just want the convenience of having it on Switch.
@Knightrider1 I'd guess it's something about artificially boosting subscription numbers, if for example it released after all the other games (i.e. June/July 2023) that would tell loads of people to hold off subscribing to the subscriptions until closer to the release date.
Microsoft especially sound desperate regarding boosting Game Pass numbers given the whole Activision acquisition situation as well as for the past month or so they've started to send out "Subscribe to Game Pass" emails almost every day to those who play Xbox but don't have Game Pass.
Psyched for Pilotwings, and the groovy narration is so fitting for this chill game.
Nicely done NOA, aww yeeeeahhh 😎
@Dezzy70 Yes, this is exactly what I thought. The fact the Switch doesn't have its own 2D Mario game is a glaring omission - and Odyssey was a long time ago now too!
The only problem is... Mario movie being April and Zelda in May. I can't see Nintendo releasing Mario and Zelda in subsequent months. They could target the Mario Movie home entertainment release though... so when it releases on blu Ray which would be approx October/November.
@nocdaes
Totally agree there is a lack of new 3d or 2d Mario.
Was thinking the same to near to Zelda.
But a home release blu ray release say November 2023 with a new Mario game probably spot on.
Surely they got to do it. They crazy if they miss out on this.
Would also maybe an amazing last swan song for the Switch ends maybe early 2024.
I never played this one, only the Snes original. I remember the biggest draw of that game was seeing the instructors various extreme reactions to your performance, good or bad, depending on how you did.
Who needs Tears OffThe Kingdom when you can fire the little man out of a cannon into the side of a mountain? I literally wasted hundreds of hours doing that as a kid.
@Member_the_game you're in for a treat, it's superb !!!
@Royalblues I doubt we will get GC on NSO. We never got them on VC. Even Super Mario Sunshine’s controls had to be modified to work without a GC controller.
I suppose they could require people to play with a GC controller. Or the next console can bring back the analog shoulder buttons.
I think my NSOXP is about to expire this month.
I should get that renewed.
With that roster, and N64 releases being once a month or every other month, I'm guessing Goldeneye is late 2023. Sigh.
Never bought this first time round. £50 per game in the mid-90s was a lot for a kid with a paper route, so had to be picky with my game purchases. Keen to try it now it's available at no extra cost though.
@Yosher Expansion pack is shockingly bad value. Ps5 and Xbox subscription services get 10 or so games each month.
And these are decent modern games. First party day one releases in xbox's case. We get one game every month or 2 from consoles 5, 6 or 7 generations old and don't pay much less.
@PeteW Yeah, unfortunately I'm aware of that. Fact is that Nintendo's IPs have the power to sell these things though and so long as people keep buying/subscribing, they have no reason to change anything, no matter how much we want these things to change.
No one else asking about the voice over guy? Is this a theme of pilot wings?!
This is the second most excited I've been about a game being released this year, being only narrowly eclipsed by that of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
@Fizza took me a while.😂
The narration was so wrong, yet so funny. Happy that Nintendo is taking a risk for once.
After Wave Race, Pilot Wings was the only N64 game that I still wanted for NSO. I'm ready to move on to GBA and/or Gamecube.
So when are the next games coming for the NES and SNES? It's been a while.
