Re: Nvidia Is Purchasing Chip Designer Arm, And That Could Be Very Good News For Nintendo

mookysam

Do we really think this will clear the competition authorities in all relevant countries without some major caveats? If Nvidia give themselves a competitive edge at the expense of ARM licensees then it's not at all good for the industry - and there are a vast amount of devices that rely on ARM architecture. By either withholding the best chip designs from licensees (who also happen to be direct competitors) so that only Nvidia products use them, or by giving licensees unfavorable terms, it gives Nvidia an unfair advantage. If/when the deal is actually finalised I'd wager the Switch 2 will already be out, and any perceived advantages will take a long time to filter down.

Re: Feature: Remembering Toys R Us, The '90s Gamer's Paradise

mookysam

The Toys r Us "near" where I grew up (it was about 30 miles away) was incredible. Alongside Dixons it was absolutely the best place to get video games in the '90's - maybe even better. I remember going there with my Mum to do some Christmas shopping and playing a demo for the newly released Diddy Kong Racing. I was completely and utterly blown away as it was the first time I had played an N64 game and it looked glorious. I knew my Dad was getting me an N64 for Christmas so my Mum got me Diddy Kong Racing and Super Mario 64. The '90's were awesome!

Re: Return To Breath Of The Wild's Divine Beasts With The Latest Boss Keys Analysis Vid

mookysam

Dungeons are usually my favourite part of Zelda games. The divine beasts were okay but I did really miss the traditional style dungeons. By Skyward Sword they had become extremely cleverly designed and thematically dense so it was a shame Nintendo didn't continue the trend in Breath of the Wild.

If the next Zelda game incorporates larger, more complex (and themed!) dungeons whilst building on Breath of the Wild's foundations it would be awesome.

Re: Sports Direct Buys 25.75 Percent Stake In Embattled UK Retail Chain GAME

mookysam

Mike Ashley is a word that will get me banned if I type it here. Revolting human who treats his staff appallingly. He ignored employment legislation simply to make more money. I've never shopped at Sports Direct and if he buys up more of GAME I won't shop there again, either. Going into GAME is enough of a depressing retail experience as it is.

Re: Editorial: The Frustrating Quest for a SNES Mini is Bad Business for Nintendo

mookysam

As they announced it in the evening I didn't even find out until yesterday morning, and of course, by then, websites stopped taking preorders. Like thousands of others I do really want it but I'm not going to run myself ragged trying to find one. Poor show, Nintendo, poor show. If you announce a highly desirable product (c'mon it's a baby SNES) at least make it so people can get the thing. It only seems to benefit ebay scalpers and the NES mini's stock issues just turned the whole thing into a completely negative experience for most people. It's bad for Nintendo's brand image. As I said, poor show.

Re: Talking Point: The DLC Expansion Pass for Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Both Surprising and Inevitable

mookysam

It's a shame as Zelda seemed one of those series that doesn't need DLC as the games are so complete as they are.

The price seems rather steep for what you actually get. Never again am I buying a season pass before the content is actually out. I would perhaps buy it down the road if the DLC is enticing enough. What do they classify as a dungeon? A dungeon dungeon or a shrine? Will any of it really add anything to the experience?

Re: Breaking Down the Nintendo Switch Online Service Details

mookysam

To clarify, does this mean that the system will not launch with chat or messaging? Good grief!

I think a further issue is how few games will actually utilise online multiplayer - games that hardcore fans already have on their Wii U and can play online there for free!

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Switch Presentation?

mookysam

Dreadful price. At £280 it is an incredibly difficult sell, particularly when a PS4 bundled with a game can be bought for £200. I don't think this will have the sort of broad appeal Nintendo are hoping, not until it is substantially cheaper.

What disappointed me most about the reveal was the games, or lack thereof. Developers appeared on stage (or video) to say they are supporting the system but didn't show what they are making. Mario looks potentially amazing but is not coming out until Christmas and Zelda will be on the Wii U for considerably cheaper. Xenoblade 2 is an exciting prospect, regardless of the foul character designs. Aside from these three games, at the moment it feels like there were a lot of smoke and mirrors. I come away knowing little more than I did after the teaser trailer last year. The system is out in 7 weeks and they should have shown more to really ramp up the excitement. I have seen comments saying things like "closer to launch" but we are already a hair's breadth away from release. What about details of the UI? Their online features and account system? The virtual console? We have a lot of unanswered questions.

The system itself has definite potential and I will get one when it is cheaper and Mario has launched, but right now I do not think Nintendo showed it off in the best light.

Re: Review: Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS)

mookysam

I absolutely adore the PS2 original - it's one of my favourite games ever. I've decided against buying this though because I have so many other games to play and there are so many other games coming out that are more interesting to me. This also appears to be quite a visual and audio downgrade compared to the original, which is a shame.

Re: Feature: Reflecting on Four Years of the Wii U

mookysam

I think the Wii U was fundamentally flawed from its inception. Its design priorities led to a system that was lumbered rather than enriched by its controller. Moreover the insistence on hardware backwards compatibility with the Wii rendered it not just underpowered but meant it had a bizarre architecture, representing a extreme hurdle for most multiplatform developers. Add poor messaging and weak to non-existent marketing - as well as a ridiculously high price - and it was always going to be a recipe for failure.

I said in a comment to a previous article that I don't understand the comparisons to the Gamecube and I stand by that. The libraries just don't compare. The Wii U is certainly my least favourite Nintendo console but I have enjoyed the games I've played on it (apart from Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze). My favourite games are Pikmin 3 and Yoshi's Woolly World. I've just started Captain Toad and am enjoying that too. Bayonetta 2 is fantastic.

Nintendo seemed to have struggled with HD development on the console but hopefully have learned from their mistakes. I'm not sure if the Wii U will be remembered all that fondly particularly if its best games get ported to the swith. It's true legacy could well be the Switch itself, especially if Nintendo learn from all their previous mistakes.

Re: Editorial: The Wii U Has Been Nintendo's Lowest Selling Home Console; It Deserved Better

mookysam

The Wii U is sadly my least favourite console. I don't agree with the comparisons to the Gamecube because the Gamecube has a far superior library, with much better support from Nintendo and good third party support - including some excellent exclusives. It also had an elegant and powerful architecture.

That is not to say the Wii U is not without its merits and it does have some great games (Bayonetta 2 is sublime!). Whilst I do enjoy off-TV play, I find the gamepad quite uncomfortable to use The fact that Nintendo themselves have not given a particularly compelling reason for its existence is disappointing. The DS and Wii fulfilled the potential of their unique hardware features, but I don't think the Wii U has.

Hopefully Nintendo have learnt from their mistakes with the Wii U. All signs so far suggest that they may well have, but we'll have to wait and see. I haven't been as excited for a console launch as I am for the Switch in a long time and I look forward to what it will offer.

Re: Castlevania Dev MercurySteam Denies It Ever Pitched A New Metroid To Nintendo

mookysam

Rumours constantly spread round the internet like wildfire and often there is no basis for them. There's no real way of knowing in this case.

As for the Lords of Shadow games, I enjoyed them and think Lords of Shadow 2 is seriously underrated. I would have no problems recommending it to people and it is a shame it has such a bad reputation. It has an excellent combat system with quite a lot of depth. I never had any problems with the stealth sections people bemoan. There were only a few stealthy moments anyway.

I'll always prefer the IGAvanias, however. They're gaming nirvana for me and I can't wait for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Continued Commitment to the 3DS Makes Sense

mookysam

Where Nintendo has done well recently is in their partnerships with Japanese developers such as Level 5, Capcom and Square-Enix and bringing their games to a western audience. By continuing to localise games they can keep the system going for a very long time, but as many of the titles are quite niche it also serves the benefit of not distracting from the impending NX release. I'm very pleased that Dragon Quest VII was finally released. On the other hand I have been underwhelmed by Nintendo's own releases over the past few years.

As a whole I still don't think the 3DS' library is as good as that of the DS, which is my favourite handheld of all time, but that is hardly a criticism. I also prefer the Vita (if you like Japanese games, that hasn't been short of great releases this year either!).

Re: Poll: The GameCube is 15 Years Old - Pick Your Favourite Games

mookysam

My favourite Nintendo console. My top five from that list are Metroid Prime, Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door, Tales of Symphonia, Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4. I played Resident Evil 4 five times in a row I loved it so much.

A real gem for me is Baten Kaitos, which is still one of the most beautiful games I've played and it has an awesome battle system.

Re: Multiple Sources Outline a Portable NX With Detachable Controllers, Including a 'Base Station' for TV

mookysam

No idea if this will turn out to be true but I have suspected for a long time that the NX will be primarily a handheld. I love handheld gaming so can't say I would be displeased, especially if it is powered by Tegra. For a handheld device that is amazing, but it would be unimpressive to have another TV console around Wii U levels of power.

I believe that Nintendo's problem this gen - more than their struggles supporting two systems at once - is that the 3DS has effectively cannibalised the Wii U. Nintendo has many millions of fans but for most they surely got their "Nintendo fix" from the cheaper 3DS with its vastly superior library. 60 million 3DS sales did not translate into Wii U sales. The NX being a single device solves this split market problem, and by focusing on a handheld will enable it to both play to Nintendo's strengths and be as cheap as possible. Unfortunately it would mean no real prospect of receiving multiplats alongside the PS4 or Xbox One, but I suspect for many people Nintendo consoles have long been "second consoles".

Re: Feature: Our Favourite Nintendo E3 Moments

mookysam

E3 2006 was marvelous. They went in with such confidence and with everything they had. The Wii had incredible promise and the games - particularly Super Mario Galaxy - looked amazing.

At the opposite end of the spectrum E3 2008 is always good for some laughs.

Re: A Wii U and 3DS Nintendo Direct Is On the Way

mookysam

Probably lots of Yokai Watch and Fire Emblem in the European version. Hopefully a release date for Dragon Quest VII too. I know this is for "spring and summer releases" but perhaps even a trailer for Pokémon Sun and Moon. Dare they show any of the elusive Zelda U?

Re: Feature: Reflections on 20 Years of Pokemon

mookysam

I was 14 when Pokémon Red and Blue were released in Europe. Me and my friend quickly became huge fans of the franchise, from the original games themselves to the N64 spin-offs, anime series and the vast array of merchandise.

Pokémon Blue was my first RPG - now my favourite genre - and I was amazed at how such a large and complex game could be on the Game Boy. It felt like a real adventure, something a lot of contemporary games are still unable to capture, and I enjoyed capturing, levelling and evolving the monsters. I became particularly attached to my Bulbasaur.

Since then I have played every main entry. I particularly loved Pokémon Silver, which I would spend hours playing huddled by a table lamp so I could properly see the dull Game Boy Color screen. This was something I repeated with Sapphire on the Game Boy Advance the summer before I started university, but by then fatigue had started to set in a bit. I did fall away from the series after playing Pearl, though four years later became a huge fan once more after buying White. I had no idea a new game had even released, but saw it while browsing amazon one day. White is now my favourite entry. It felt so fresh and really pulled me back in. It's also the first time I have ever completed a regional Pokédex and now I finally want to finish the national dex in Alpha Sapphire.

I always enjoy the new Pokémon that come with each new generation and this is probably the main aspect of the series I enjoy. Though my feelings on Y are a little mixed, I think that it has the best designed monsters yet.

Re: Poll: Vote for Your Favourite Main Series Pokémon Games - 20th Anniversary Edition

mookysam

White is my favourite. It's the game that rekindled my love for the series after I was frazzled by Pearl. It felt like such a fresh start and made lots of little changes. It also has a great story and an amazing soundtrack.

My second favourite is Soul Silver, which I played after White. A marvelous remake of the excellent Gold/Silver. The gameplay is brought up to date, there's a lot of new content and I particularly liked that all the pokémon follow you around, which was a lovely touch. It also made great use of the touchscreen.

Re: Analyst Firm DFC Believes a 2016 Nintendo NX Launch "Would Be a Mistake"

mookysam

As much as I feel Nintendo hace reached stagnation point with the Wii U and 3DS, I'm beginning to think the NX should release next spring. This will surely give it the best chance of gettting noticed and hopefully succeeding from the get-go, particularly if it is a "new concept". What is the benefit of launching the NX this autumn? It will be competing directly with the PS4 (and xbox one) in the busiest shopping period of the year. The NX will struggle to get noticed amongst a sea of big games and big discounts. VR devices are the least of the competition. Releasing next spring will still fall within the current financial year.

Re: Feature: A Pokémon Retrospective: Generation 6 - 2013 to ????

mookysam

I enjoyed Pokémon Y, but it felt a step back in some ways to as gen5. On the one hand, I really like the new pokémon designs. Meowstic is one of my particular favourites! However, the huge (and overwhelming) regional pokédex has an overreliance on old pokémon, particularly from gen 1, and as a result the game often felt like it was trading heavily on nostalgia rather than pushing forwards like Black and White did. That said, the addition of the fairy type is a big change and makes many older pokémon relevant again.

I particularly enjoyed super training and pokémon-amie, both of which were quite addictive and added extra depth to the game. The online features are exhaustive and excellent. Overall, the battle gameplay is polished and refined. Presentation is a real mixed bag. The battles and pokemon look wonderful though the overworld is a little disappointing, as is the lack of 3D outside of battle and some indoor areas.

By far the biggest criticism I have is the weak story, which is a real shame after Black and White placed a heavier emphasis on its story and themes. Kalos as a region also felt undercooked at times, as if the game was rushed to release.

I'm currently playing Alpha Sapphire and enjoying it.

Re: Review: Super Mario 64 DS (Wii U eShop / DS)

mookysam

I got this at launch with my DS and thoroughly enjoyed the new additions. Controls weren't bad with the quirky "thumb strap", which allowed for 360° control and meant the run button didn't need holding down. It was never going to be as accurate as the analogue control of the original, but itwas a good compromise.

The mini games are brilliant. They kept my mind sharp while I was up all night writing a dissertation.

Re: Poll: Which Nintendo Franchises Do You Most Want to See With the NX Launch?

mookysam

3D Mario, Metroid and Pikmin.

It has been a long time since Metroid had a new release and I think a great big Mario that returns to the design ideals of Super Mario 64 would be a marvelous way to show off what new hardware can do.

Normally Zelda would be my hardware buying must-have as it is my favourite game series, but it is already coming out for the Wii U. This is why I didn't get the Wii at launch as I already had Twilight Princess on the Gamcube. Incidentally, Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime are the game I bought my Wii for.
