Pokémon Bank connectivity is cool too, and will affect how I play R/B/Y with that in mind.

I guess I don't typically see when they announce Pokemon games, but I did find it interesting that aside of for the purposes of hawking Pokemon Bank and the eShop titles for the 3DS, they didn't seem too intent on mentioning that the game was only for the 3DS, and didn't show it as being 3DS exclusive in any way. I'm probably reading too deeply into it, but still, I couldn't help but think that as I watched...... for how painfully short that "Direct" was. That was a trailer with an intro, not a Direct.

I'm not really sure if there was anything to be excited about...

Well, that was quick, and we knew about it. It was still a nice bone to throw everyone. I find it hard to believe knowing this announcement was about to come out that they revised the sales numbers down for the 3DS this year. You know there will be a special edition 3DS that goes with it.

After the initial revision was announced, I had thought this might confirm the Sun and Moon for the NX, but I don't think that is the case. Still would have liked to see something on GO and Pokken. I am surprised that they left those out.

@Sinister Yeah, good question. But they did show the RBY series being transferred to a 3DS and mentioned Sun & Moon as the games being transferred into, so it's probably safe to assume.

(Plus, I wouldn't put it past Nintendo but it would be pretty bad business practice to announce a game and let everyone assume it's on a system they own and they say, "oops! NX lol")

I'll be honest - I knew things were heading south when those precious six minutes were being wasted on bragging and on stating the obvious: everyone knows the franchise has always been about trading and battling.
I was literally thinking "Let's hope the footage won't be a lightning-fast clip we'll be rewatching in a GameXplain analysis"... and lo, here we are.

It was a nice video that could probably be used as a comer coal to further promote the brand. As for what was shown, I'm surprised at Pokemon Bank support for the VC gen 1 games. The Pokemon files are completely different now to how they were in gen 1, with different stay mechanics too.

I'm assuming we won't get actual information about Sun and Moon until e3 this year.

I might be in the minority, but I actually love these flashy Directs. Everything gets leaked early these days, so these videos have to hype the thing, rather than make the reveal BE the hype.

Also, just in my opinion, I can't speak for Nintendo as a whole, but, man, 2016 Pokemon trailers are 3/3.

Well overall the information we got concerning the VC games was much more interesting. Pokémon Bank is a nice addition. And from other news we know that in Yellow you can go and use the surf minigame without having a pikachu that can use surf.

I would have loved to see some artwork for the new starters tho.

It's pretty likely that that's a new Pokemon being teased.

At the end of the trailer before they flash the logos, the guy opens up a NEW Nintendo 3DS (notice the C-Stick). Maybe this game will have N3DS exclusive features and amiibo support? Or it could be a step above X and Y and be an actual New 3DS exclusive.

Also to me, this direct wasn't an announcement of the the games (let's be honest, who didn't know a new Pokemon game was in the works?), but more to celebrate the anniversary and promote the virtual console titles. The news that Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow are now forward compatible is a pretty major announcement.

@AJRMARTIZ That's if there is a handheld part of the NX... which would overall be stupid. We all saw how PlayStation TV went and if they made it so games were compatible on both... it would be a system dead on arrival as many of the major 3rd parties would not even care due to the handheld portion being so limited. We'd end up with a system that is probably weaker than the Wii U. Either the NX is strictly a handheld which of course the home console of Nintendo would be officially dead or there is probably no handheld portion for the NX.

I thought the trailer was great, really tugged at the nostalgia strings, but it would have been truly epic if it had ended with some actual footage of the new games.

amiibo support maybe, but everything else, no. I always have this conversation with people cause this happens all the time. It's a marketing tactic. Whatever the newest version of the device is, that's what will be shown in trailers etc. It doesn't signify anything that it is exclusive to new 3DS.

Well that's 2 more things than Nintnedo has given us for Zelda U, and they announced that game nearly 2 years ago. Unless you count "Zelda U" as the name and "2016" as a release window.

One good thing we all know about Gamefreak and the Pokemon company, they will be constantly talking about these 2 games all year long. It won't be like Zelda U were it goes into top secret underground hiding, or SFZ which gets shown once a year. We will be seeing plenty of Sun and Moon over the next 9 months. And while I normally think every game Ntinedo has gets delayed, I predict this one will release in 2016.

Considering there isn't even footage of Sun/Moon I kind of feel like calling this a "Direct" was a wasted six and a half minutes.

Other than the Chinese thing and the announcement that Sun and Moon are coming the rest of the "Direct" was just the Pokemon series patting itself on the back.

Am I the only one who thought that was a horrible Direct? The news hadalready been confirmed by NoA the day before and the only thing we learned since was that it supports 2 new languages: Chinese and Chinese. Need I add that Nintendo's Chibese trade only extends to Hong Kong, where they sell flip all. The Pokemon Bank news was all right, but honesly all they had was a montage trailer and news about crap we already knew.

Why, why, why could they not have told us some stuff like they did in 2013?

Have to say I'm kind of annoyed there isn't a definitive version of X&Y coming (Z presumably). I haven't played the games since Crystal and the last few years I've been wanting to challenge myself to complete the pokedex on one of the modern ones, but I'd rather not go for one of the dual releases to make it easier. Now it seems they no longer release a 3rd game in each generation.

Besides, anyone familiar with the pre-release hype cycle for Pokemon games knows they are very controlled. We'll see our first footage in whatever the current equivalent to Pokemon Smash is, though we'll have to deal with those guys talking really loudly over it

Again, you fail to see that when they announce a direct, we expect something that is more than a 5 minute history video. They try to make this big and utterly failed so much, that a leak of two logo pretty much told you the direct. The Pokebank was the only thing not leaked. Also, many did not catch the video was five minutes until today when it was shown on the twitter page. Another thing, you are wrong to claim they said it would be 5 minutes in the original announcments.

Where is it shown to be 5 minutes in twitter? The only part I see the five minutes is from the [update] at the bottom of the page which many people could have missed since they could.would have read it before the update. Sure, they may have said something in the Japanese tweets but 98% of people in the Americas and Europe don't go there to check. Their Facebook page also says nothing for the length.

Overall, they failed with this direct... if you can even call it that, a Nintendo minute had more content than this. it was lacking in many things that are releasing this year which easily could have been covered, there is a lot of stuff that would have been done to make this something real. Honestly, you need to lay down your Nintendo white knight sword and open your eyes.

There's plenty of excitement for the new games, so they didn't fail at all.

Also, the fact that you dismissed the whole handheld/console ecosystem for NX above because of 3rd parties shows me that is is you who needs to open their eyes.

Western 3rd party support can't and won't happen. Saying otherwise makes you delusional, and out of touch with reality. Nintendo is stuck in a chicken-egg situation there, which is mostly their fault.

I can almost guarantee you that it will be released the week before Black Friday, so right around Thanksgiving. It might come sooner than that, but not much.

Get it out before Holiday shopping begins, that's always the rule.

2016 will be a great swansong year for the 3DS. Really looking forward to this and pleased that it will take place in a brand new region.

A likely date, yes. Nintendo usually plugs a big release in that spot. They did it last time with Omega and Alpha (though I think Europe had it a week later or something like that).

X and Y however don't fit that, because they released in October. Still though, that's a good, rough date to go on.

With RBY working with Pokemon Bank, all I can say now is GSC confirmed for 3DS eshop release.

I wonder how the bank stuff is gonna work. Would be nice if all your Pokemans stats get set to max upon transfer.

I think it's part of a larger Direct that was scrapped probably because of the possible Star Fox delay or change of plans.

I'd say we know just as much about Pokemon - you'll be a trainer, and wander around a city and countryside, and collect Pokemon in balls, and challenge trainers. I think that's about as much as we know abut Zelda U.

I do agree w/ you on Zelda U in 2017. Don't worry about Pokemon S&M though, all will be revealed shortly. And 90% of the potential customers already got all they needed anyway, name and a date. And when it releases before Zelda U...

That's pretty much all the meat to this. The VC thing... yeah great, another method to get all the gen one starters in your pokebank along with the countless other games to get those. Not that big. never mind the fact that Pokemon Go is releasing this year... with less knowledge than Zelda U, plus the soon release of Pokken. Those are some of the major ones they could have talked about but instead, we got a history lesson, logos and another method of Pokemon transfers. That's a failure.

I think a lot of comments have missed the point about today's direct - which was to acknowledge the 20th anniversary of Pokemon but then to whip out a quick surprise of a new game for Christmas. If it was not for yesterday's spoiler, I reckon the reception would've been far more positive.

Again seems some people are forgetting two things, one this direct did specifically state that it was a direct for Pokémon's 20th Anniversary and it succeeded in that part. Number two! The Pokémon Company/GameFreak is infinitely more secretive then Nintendo! We got next to zero info on ORAS for the first two months or so after the announcement in May of 2014! I think this is going to be pretty awesome, but I need more info!!!!! The rapid fire screen grabs I took on my phone will only fill me with rampant speculation for so long!

I said what we know about Zelda, we know that the core gameplay is going to change, it will be more open world.

Maybe S&M is going to have all the Pokemon with leashes on, and you whip them in order for them to make a move, and instead of gyms we'll finally see something new, like brothels.

Just saying, we know - for sure - name and release window for Pokemon. We don't know a lot about Zelda, but it's more, and I look forward to playing in Feb of 2017. (If you guys aren't getting the hint, I have no confidence Zelda is coming this year.)

while i thought this was a good direct, i feel like this would been better off like the Xenoblade Chronicles X Presentation instead of a Regular Direct. but overall not bad direct, great pokemon trailer as well.

I liked the video, it tapped into nostalgia and reminded me of my child hood and why I love pokemon. I hadn't heard the leak, so the reveal was exciting for me.
You don't want to give away too much info right off the bat because people will lose interest, you need a steady stream of info. More art and game play will be out soon enough. However, pokemon s&m brings to mind other things... All in all, I enjoyed the video.

Kinda hard to be hyped for something that doesn't even give us at least 10 seconds worth of gameplay. Though the Pokemon Bank thing is pretty nice since I was too lazy to renew my subscription, so I'll probably renew it whenever I decide to pick up Yellow.

I don't understand why people get upset when information is leaked ahead of time, it's not nintendo's or gamefreak's fault. "Well with the leak yesterday this didn't give us any new info." Well duh, it was supposed to be new info but of course people mine the info and leak it. To be upset that this was underwhelming because you got the information ahead of time seems silly to me.

@ikki5 Pokemon Go is getting new info revealed at GDC. Pokken has been covered pretty extensively already. Hopefully there's fighter DLC later on though.

Sun and Moon will get plenty of details revealed soon. There's CoroCoro in about a week and a half. Hopefully we get the early details then, though we have to wait until the following month's issue.

@XCWarrior I think we're going to beat the S&M theme to death before long.

@IceClimbers I love it, the entire direct was basically "hey, we're making a game," the end... and you justify why other info or stuff was not given because it can be given later... great logic there. Never mind to use it to also advertising up coming games. Yeah, no matter how much you worship Nintendo, it won't change this from being a failure.

@Steven1094 remake pairs have never gotten 3rd versions to begin with. FR/LG are the only gen 1 remakes and HG/SS were the only gen 2 ones, so OR/AS we're more than likely never getting a 3rd version no matter what

@IceClimbers Exactly, it shouldn't have been just five minutes, and thus shouldn't have had such a lack of info. Fun fact: I was going to watch the direct as a past stream on Twitch and nearly wastedd 45 minutes of my time looking at the precursor thumbnail.

@Uberchu Well, loads of people live in Antarctica (as indicated here: http://www.antarctica.gov.au/about-antarctica/people-in-antarctica/how-many ), and most if not all of us speak Antarctican. We've had an astonishing increase in the amount of people speaking the language lately, so we're on our way to exceeding how many speak Chinese. Getting closer by the second.

Pokémon is copying version names from one of it's clones now! BAHAHAHAHA! Oh wow, Nintendo has completely run out of names now. First it was Black and White (because they couldn't think of any other colors), then it was X & Y (because they couldn't think of any more opposing colors), and now they're so artistically challenged that they're forced to swipe their clone's version names!

@rjejr The key to good S&M is a good and long beating. Nintendo knew what they were going to deal with when they named them. Now they must face the consequences!

Hopefully this game will have a fusion lab where you can fuse up to 6 Pokemon at once.
