Back in February, Nintendo and MercurySteam announced Metroid Dread for the Switch would be receiving two new updates.
The first update adding "Dread" and "Rookie" modes was released on the same day as the announcement and now the second update has finally been released - adding in a Boss Rush Mode.
There are also a number of modes - including Survival Rush and Dread Rush. Last but not least are some general fixes. Below are the official patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's official support page:
Ver. 2.1.0 (Released April 7, 2022)
New Modes Added
Three different boss rush modes have been added to the game. Press the R Button on the “Samus Files” screen to move to the Boss Rush selection screen.
Boss Rush
- A mode where players fight 12 continuous boss battles, and aim for the best time.
- Any damage received is carried-over into the next fight. Weapons are fully-restored between battles.
- If Samus is defeated, players may select “Retry” to continue playing from the start of the battle they lost. There is, however, a time penalty for being defeated.
- Bosses fought in Boss Rush can be fought one-on-one at any time by selecting “Practice”.
*Unlocked by clearing the main game a single time. (In the event that a player has completed the game before the update was released, they will be able to play Boss Rush immediately after updating).
Survival Rush
- A mode where players see how many bosses they can defeat inside of the 5 minute time limit.
- Any damage received, or weapons spent are carried-over into the next battle. Even if time remains on the clock, Samus being defeated will result in a game over.
- Defeating a boss will add a fixed amount of time to the countdown clock. Defeat a boss without receiving any damage to receive an even bigger time bonus.
*Survival Rush is unlocked by completing either Boss Rush or Dread Rush.
Dread Rush
- The basic rules are the same as in Boss Rush, but if Samus is hit by a boss, her energy drops to zero and she is defeated.
- Bosses fought in Dread Rush can be fought one-on-one at any time by selecting “Practice”.
*Unlocked by clearing the main game using Dread Mode. (In the event that a player has completed Dread Mode before the update was released, they will be able to play Dread Rush immediately after updating).
General Fixes
- Fixed an error where the Game Over screen would not display properly when Samus takes damage and is defeated immediately after destroying a central unit.

I mean, it's nice that they are adding little things but Metroid Dread started as a pretty complete package so doesn't really need new features.
This is how to do a game! Release it as a complete package, then give players some free updates with new modes, new difficulties, boss rush, etc...
I think the industry has an over-reliance on DLC and it hurts when a half a game is released to mediocre reviews, only to get better with money. We already pay quite a bit for our games, just give us them complete, then chuck in the cosmetics, the ultra hard modes and the additional soundtracks for the price of admission. If we like what we see, and we want more, then is the time for DLC, not before.
Glad they are adding modes, but I had a lot of difficulty with the bosses. No rush mode for me. 😂
Always thought it was a bit odd that they decided to release a boss rush mode six months after the game came out. Feels like the sort of mode that the game should just... have at launch? I guess they want people to go back to the game or something, or maybe use this as an extra boost to sales (not sure who would wait for a boss rush mode before even thinking of getting the game, but regardless). Same goes for the easy and hard modes too, they just feel like they should have been there from the start. Maybe then those who found the game too difficult and put it down wouldn't have done so.
Not interested. Maybe I'd have tried it after i beat the game, but i already deleted it to make room for new demos & games. The game definitely didn't interest me enough to want to play the bosses over & over, but it may have been better than having to do the EMMI zones.
I'm stuck on the final boss, so I can't play the Boss Rush mode.
I am so hyped to play this. This is definitely in my top 3 switch games, exited for the new content. Never got far into dread mode tho, I'm too bad XD
I'm playing it right now and there are no maximum tomatoes in-between each boss. I think it's glitched, help?
I don't know if I'm very interested in going back to the game at this point in time, but it was great while it lasted.
Nintendo has been on a roll this past year. Most of their Switch titles have been pretty hit-or-miss, but they absolutely nailed it with Bowser's Fury, Metroid Dread, Mario Party Superstars, Pokémon Legends, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land--with more games coming down the pipeline that look just as promising.
Dread is actually the first metroidvania I've ever completed. I 100%-ed it, actually, which really speaks volumes to how great it was. I've played Metroid, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Hollow Knight, and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. With all of them, I got lost, frustrated, or just bored and never bothered to finish them. I think Dread could've been a little longer, but at the same time, it doesn't overstay its welcome. I can't commend the game enough for simultaneously being hands-off, yet always guiding you in the right direction through environmental changes. It's a revolutionary innovation for the genre, and I hope more metroidvanias will use this system moving forward.
I attempted Dread Mode and I was dreading it. I was killed not long after leaving the starting area so Samus's Journey was over before it even begun 🤣🤣🤣
...I need to replay this game at some point...I kinda stopped towards the end, might replay with the easier mode because some moments were irritating me.
@Shiiva Hey at least it wasn't 1/10th of a game 😅
Nah you're right I fully agree.
@Joeynator3000 The EMMI were so annoying to me and I was always relieved when I was able to destroy one but when another one came up I just let off one big sigh. Dread will definitely go down as my least favourite Metroid game in the entire series.
@RubyCarbuncle I don't consider it THAT bad, I do prefer the Prime games over this, though. Then again I'm not a huge fan of the 2D games in general. But yeah, EMMI's at first were terrifying, but after a couple of times or so they just got infuriating and stressful.
Then there were some on the minibosses that almost made me quit the game, not to mention getting some of these items that require to be insanely perfect at comboing these dashes and shinesparks and stuff.
@PBandSmelly Are U inhaling the bosses to get their abilities ?
Don't have the game anymore got my money back the same day i bought it.. The game was not a good game.. Super metroid anyone.. a real good metroid
@Joeynator3000 to me the game was a borefest and got my money back the same day
I'm super happy for this. After clearing the game twice, I don't have much interest in replaying anything besides the bosses, so this is just perfect for me.
The whole game is good but the bosses were the best part. The last boss was especially phenomenal.
So to unlock Dread Rush, I will need to beat Hard Mode and then Dread Mode. Great design.......I wish these barriers were gone and the updates allowed players to play the game as they want. I just don't care much to play the game through Hard Mode. Otherwise, I think the other two boss rush modes will bring plenty of replay value into the game. Looking forward to getting into them soon.
What’s a central unit?
@FishyS I mean it gave the game real post game replayability besides trying Dread Mode. Depending on who you ask that is kind of important
I was done with Dread as soon as I finished it.
Not my favourite Metroid game.
I'm glad others will get more out of it but I'd rather they release the Prime Trilogy on Switch.
Now it is time put our skills into test! I am so happy right now! Thanks again to Mr. Sakamoto and MercurySteam and of course Nintendo!
Awesome. Now that both updates are out I'll have to jump back in sometime soon and show these bosses what's what.
Also try out Dread Mode but I don't expect to do well at all there. XD
This is neat, but it feels like something they meant to have at launch and just didn’t finish. I might check it out someday, though
I like that a defeat in Boss Rush doesn't send you back to square one. That was my main concern in that mode.
@premko1
I'm trying, but the helmet just fogs up making it harder to see.
I died over 400 times in this game
While these little modes are a nice update, they are probably something that should have been in the original game. I do find the whole game a bit short, lacking in scope, especially for $60. I would like to see some dlc that creates more content within the game and extra reasons to explore the main game. I am not a speedrunner, I like finding secret areas and wish there were more. After 100%ing the game, adding secret areas would make me really interested in playing through again.
@I-U No, you just have to beat the game, doesn't need to be on hard mode to unlock these.
@Moistnado So adding new areas to a completed game, doesnt feel like that's what should have been there when the game released?
...but adding rush/Dread modes of bosses which are an integral part of the story line, as well as difficulty levels that practically make the game impossible to beat, were important to be there when game was released?
My apologies but no for multiple reasons.
1) you learn skills you apply to the bosses, throughout the game
2) part oof the suspense of the game is arriving to those bosses and not knowing what to expect.
3) these additions are what DLC's should be, especially for a genre like Metroid; Where normal gameplay involves time commitment, these new additions give it pick-up-and-play features for anyone who feels like enjoying a "quick round."
A game launches with rave reviews but still adds content later, FOR FREE.
But the internet can still find complaints!
@dew12333 This is Nintendolife...they could hand everything to people in here on a silver platter, then they'll complain that it's on a platter and the platter is silver.
THIS is how a game must be made !!!! complete, with fantastic realization and with new stuff FREE.
GREAT WORK NINTENDO
@dew12333 Welcome to the internet.
I still haven't beat this game. I keep getting lost. Might have to resort to a walkthrough.
The only novelty mode i’d like to see added would be a randomizer roguelite mode with permanent perk unlocks.
And a 4:3 screen mode, because the thing i liked less than the EMMIs is the aspect ratio, which took away the feeling of loneliness and claustrophobia.
I loved it while playing it, but it left no impression whatsoever.
All the game truly needs is a dedicated speed run mode.
Which is, something with a dedicated timer (preferably with milestone markers aka "splits") and removes "downtime", such as not triggering cutscenes and not suspending gameplay when collecting items.
@WiltonRoots Yeah, Nintendolife is even worse than Twitter. And that is saying A LOT.
Tbh, I am happy that they keep updating games after release.
@NWC
Cool stroy bro, especially the second time you said it.
An update that adds modes is always good. It beats paying for this stuff as dlc.
@sanderev That's why I keep coming back, the endless meltdowns keep me entertained. So many things to get mad at in the world and they choose pixels and framerates.
@abduz hello adduz, please clam down. I hope I didn't trigger you by being a stranger commenting online 😊 Also I agree with everything you said; I like the suspense and the bosses and all that. I was commenting on how the game felt short;i wanted more content, so I agree with your comments about time commitment. I finished this game at 100% way too fast and wanted more game.
@Moistnado Haha dont worry I was calm, didnt mean for my response to sound like an attack at all 🤦♂️🤷♂️ but yes definitely agree with you about lenght of the game, it definitely could have used additional areas and extend the lenght of the game.
In case you haven't already, play it on hard mode, it won't add to the lenght of the game but it definitely is more challenging.
@premko1
@pbandsmelly
No he has to hold down and B after he catches the boss for that.
Great game, but it was though enough on normal, for me. These new modes are just so people would break their Switch and pull their hair out.
Sponsored by Nintendo and Keeps, with their new product for gamer pattern baldness.
Still kind of angry about the lazy boss near the end of the game before the final boss. Was basically a normal enemy but had some different attacks. The others were great, but that one was surprisingly easy and boring, felt like they just gave up. Final boss was at least tough tough.
@PBandSmelly The easiest way for bosses is to use the needle ability - it collects all the stars and than U can fire it in boss' face or body . Try it !
@bluemujika First U have to weaken them !
@abduz Dread Rush requires a new player to beat Metroid Dread 3 times, two of which have to be on Hard and Dread mode difficulties. That’s asinine design. Thankfully I’m not a new player, but still have to beat the game on Hard and Dread to play the Dread Rush mode.
@abbyhitter stick with it as he can be beaten with a bit of effort. If you're really struggling cough turbo controller cough
I'd love DLC for this, even if paid. Exploration is what was fun for me, not so much the bosses
I'm rooting for the 2 people in the world who will get to play Dread Rush!
@abduz To unlock dread boss rush you need to beat dread mode first. To unlock dread mode you need to finish hard mode. Some people are turned off because they have to play the game again. Not a big deal to me since 2D Metroid games are so short that you can finish them in one sitting.
@I-U Depends on who you ask though. People that were waiting to try these modes have probably beaten the game several times with different difficulties. People that have beaten this once might just give it a try and leave it alone afterwards anyway, so I don't really see anything wrong with this (it would be a different story if you had to pay for the extra modes).
@KindofaBigDeal cool story kiddo shame i could care less (Blocked) bye bye
@KindofaBigDeal Oh and who are you again and why should i care. Go troll someone who cares im too old for your kiddie drama Bye
@NWC
I'm the guy who got you all hot and flustered it seems, very odd response for someone as old and mature as you methinks.
Bye bud haha
How about a no-boss mode to take Metroid back to it's true adventure/exploration routes and not boss fight after boss fight after boss fight. Just a thought. Maybe another update to add in actual background music.
I love Metroid and I love free stuff. That being said I will not use this mode because I had a hard enough time beating the bosses the first time.
Now if there was a expansion or epilogue of some sort....
More content for the sake of more content? I think they're wasting their time. The game was already a complete package in its original state.
@Matl I believe that the extra modes were cut for time and our now being added back.
Still haven't played the game, and very little interest. This from a hardcore Metroid fan
There are a depressing amount of people here who seem committed to strongly disliking this game. 'X to doubt' if Prime 4 will satisfy them despite their claims to the contrary (as they don't seem like a crowd that wants to be pleased).
@Cia It isn't really more contents, just different takes on existing contents.
@Shiiva This type of DLC is fine but it’s kinda expected standard for this type of a game. Nobody wants a story DLC? What was missing a lot to me were Space Pirates! I wish there was a DLC journey after the ending to prevent Space Pirates to do more crap to the Galaxy
Still, I just want a Metroid where she is an actual bounty hunter, and not some lady that keeps getting lost or stranded in space, whilst killing off the local fauna.....
@NintendoJunkie
Wasn't it galactic federation that sent her to destroy space pirates originally? Of course, she gets money for that. Therefore, it's a bounty hunting mission. Same thing in Dread. The federation sends her to ZDR to destroy possible x parasites. This is also a similar situation.
@Cia So, she is more of an exterminator?
@abbyhitter Me, too! I watched a video of the full battle with the final boss and gave up after a few tries. I'll get back to trying to beat it some day, but I'm not in any hurry.
@NintendoJunkie
She gets paid, so bounty hunter suits just as well as paid exterminator.
