Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 1.2.0 Is Now Live

jtmnm

Twiddling my thumbs as I await detailed patch notes. I'm going to go experiment with Link to make sure he can still do cool bomb stuff.

Also nerfing Greninja is a dead meme. Someone tell Nintendo.

@nessisonett Wolf's my choice. Reflect his nonsense then combo him to death. Wolf can confirm pretty easily into his down-air, and it's especially effective against big bodies like K. Rool.

@ItsOKToBeOK Where will you hide when the people come for you?

Re: Video: Nintendo Really Wants You To Know That The Switch Has More Than 1,000 Games

jtmnm

The divide here is emblematic of this last dry year. When the Switch launched, we Nintendo fans didn't think the momentum would end . . . but it did, especially when contrasted with the recent big releases on other platforms.

2019 is going to be a better year for Nintendo, assuming they can keep their deadlines. 2018, however, is likely going to read as follows: "The year Smash dropped and Pokemon Go got a console release." That's excluding the disastrous reception Nintendo's online service was met with.

As consumers and fans, it's important to acknowledge these crticisms. Old ports, deflections, and an oversaturated indie catalog only go so far. While I'm not dancing to the tune of the Nintendoombringer, I'd like to see Nintendo have a more competitive software lineup; one we will see more of if the rumored Switch Pro comes to fruition.

Despite trying to express these thoughts, I can expect the cadre of Nintendo "dindu-nuffins" to rally behind Nintendo and participate in their charade of apologetics. They'll remind me Nintendo has always stepped to the beat of its own drum to (often) great success. This, in many respects, was not one of those years.

Still, the Switch will sell, and I'm just an old Nintendo fan sitting on the toilet and writing wistfully away about the little Switch that could've been. Maybe one day we'll see a Nintendo console that offers not only the best first-party games in the business but also third-party heavy hitters like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Monster Hunter World.

Re: This Wireless Nintendo 64 "Pro-Style" Controller Is Hitting Stores Early Next Year

@Balta666 Rock on. I'd cast any concerns aside if I could play SF64 again regardless. It's probably not as bad as I'm imagining anyway.

@nocdaes I think playing the Switch in handheld mode is pretty comfortable. Back in the day, I sank seemingly countless hours into the trident too. Maybe it's just the idea of it that's off-putting. I haven't touched one of those things in well over a decade.

Re: Soapbox: That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct; Let's Talk About It

jtmnm

For better or worse, this last Direct was very focused on Smash's more technical and content-rich aspects (outside playable characters). Nintendo outdid themselves with stuffing seemingly as much content as possible into this game. With the return of a robust single-player mode showcased with a beautiful cinematic, I think we can expect this game to be a huge hit.

On characters . . . I think the ol' potted plant is a weird and hilarious inclusion, but it's understandable how fans would feel underwhelmed after the Direct if their main focus was on character reveals. Given how high the bar was set with the Belmonts, K. Rool, and Ridley, it's strange to end on such a random note.

As for me, I'm not bent out of shape about it, and the raging basement dwellers need to wash that stink off. PP looks genuinely fun to play as . . . if maybe a little frightening to deal with in more competitive play. Ken and Incineroar look great, as well.

Those disappointed should remind themselves there's at least one season of DLC coming our way. There's still a chance for your favorite character to make the cut, assuming it's a reasonable demand.

Regardless, it's likely Smash Ultimate will be my personal GOTY as well as being the best Smash game to date, and I couldn't be more excited!

Re: SNES Mini And NES Mini Combined Global Sales Surpass 10 Million Mark

jtmnm

@BensonUii Indeed! Very impressed with the Canoe emulator. I will say not having online shops for these mini consoles is a huge missed opportunity, though.

The PS1 mini's catalog looks a little lackluster, but thankfully that can be rectified! Pure retro bliss incoming. I hope Nintendo doesn't put off the N64 classic for too long.

Re: Dragalia Lost Is Nintendo's Second Largest Mobile Game Launch In US And Japan

The concept is interesting enough, judging from the trailers. It looks to have the makings of a compelling new IP should Nintendo choose to expand on it with a real game.

New Nintendo IPs are hit-and-miss with me, but I'd definitely support this if it saw a fully featured JRPG iteration on the Switch. There aren't squid people, spring arms, or anything! Just awesome anime action and dragons.

Re: Random: Former American President Barack Obama Doesn't Care About Pokémon, So Go And Vote

Look—I know NL would much rather be covering the latest on MP4 (or anything, really), but that doesn't mean NL should bait its audience into destroying each other for clicks.

I mean, with the division present today among partisans, all you need to do is show a photo of insert politician here to provoke a mouth-frothing, incoherent response . . . especially if you know how anything even remotely political gets handled here. To assert NL doesn't have the sense to recognize these things is completely detached from reality.

Re: Reggie Says Nintendo Competes For Consumer Time, Not Concerned About Direct Competition

jtmnm

Referring to web browsing and apps like Netflix was an odd choice. Time can be spent doing these things on the Wii U, but for whatever reason . . . cannot be done on the Switch, despite (now) having an online subscription service fee. For us Wii U owners, it's pretty easy to interpret this as paying more for less.

Bashing aside, instead of competing for that time, why don't they allow these services/features on the Switch? Reggie's PR here might as well be overtly stating Nintendo is choosing to fight unnecessary battles.
