On the American comedy show Saturday Night Live this weekend, the billionaire Elon Musk - known for SpaceX and his car company Tesla - appeared as the show's host.
If it wasn't already a big enough talking point, he also featured in a courtroom skit on the show as Mario's arch-rival Wario. And even his girlfriend Grimes appeared as Princess Peach.
https://twitter.com/ggluvsbats/status/1391258848611155970
While we won't go into details about what the skit was about exactly, you can view part of it over on the SNL Twitter page or the full clip on the SNL YouTube channel. Just be careful though, as it contains adult humour, bad stereotypes, drug references and blurred but explicit footage.
There are also some shots of the other Mario characters that appeared in the skit, which are circulating on social media:
Yeah, we're not sure what Nintendo might think about all of this ah...exposure. Did you catch this episode of SNL? What did you think of this Super Mario themed skit? Leave a comment down below.

Shows for an older audeince reference copyrighted material all the time so this should be fine
I really don't know what to say, but uh? Hi. -_-
How very fitting of him to dress as someone who doesn't care who he hurts as long as he gets more money
Wonder how many in the tv audience get the gaming references. Still funny
This makes even the most painfully unfunny Robot Chicken sketches look like high art. I know they've got to be banking on meme potential here, but it's not even funny in an ironic or postmodern sense. What a complete miss.
SNL showed Luigi's genitals and now I can't stop tearing my eyes out.
Look up there! It’s Elon Musk, and he’s winning us back!
@westman98 If they used everything except for this, it would have scraped the bottom of the barrel, but with this, it becomes obscene.
It's beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
@VanishStampede
Yeah, this sketch went from "How do you do, fellow kids?" to p*rn parody really quick.
@westman98 The stuff that makes one close the internet window, no matter how old one is
@westman98 Although...
DingusDongus: That's my uncle.
That's just over 5 minutes of my life I am never getting back.
A fever Dream and the best solution skit ever
I've seen a clip. An singular clip. That was enough for me.
"Charisma Vacuum" is the most accurate descriptor.
what the heck i just saw? here a lawsuit
kindly Nintendo
Cringe. Cringe. Cringe.
I have no problems with Elon Musk. But I do see he is living rent free in a few heads. He doesn't look too Wario-like though. Just has the wrong face.
American ‘comedy’ show Saturday Night Live.
As funny as finding blood on your toilet roll....never understood SNL humour
@brendathecat It turned to crap when the original cast left. Watch older episodes from the early-2000's and back. That was the golden era.
@a1904 Hey, Wario is far classier than this guy. 😁 Wario never called anyone rescuing kids in Thailand “pedo” but he sure does follow a similar approach to business as we see in him getting others to do all the work while he tries to take all the credit and money like the original Wario Ware.
@Longondo tip... buy days before and sell 1 day or a few hours ahead of the expected event. It’s the rule
What the hell was that?
Was SNL ever funny? I mean, their peak was Chris Farley yelling about the van down by the river... That is not a high peak.
It's become a meme at this point after 40+ years of people saying "SNL isn't funny anymore", but it is legitimately awful now. A large portion of the cast from the mid-90s to early 2000s are still working in Hollywood today, while the majority of the people on the show in the last 15 years are absolute nobodies who have been forgotten.
@a1904 just on the point. very nice
@PoliticallyIncorrect I don’t know enough about Musk to have much of an opinion about him, but people criticizing a well-known public figure in an article about said figure is hardly evidence he’s “living in people’s heads.” That’s just an empty phrase people use to dismiss criticism. In reality, people expressing opinions about someone in the public sphere is normal.
@dimi
Well, Wario appeared first 1992 and had his first Game 1994.
So People that confronted him first are about 30 years old, so the Audience for such Shows.
God I f***ing hate Elon Musk. Dude went on a big rant about how gender pronouns are too confusing and then called his kid ABXHXMWGWUSNXGSGSJS
I appreciate SNL recognizing Nintendo as culturally relevant. It's a shame the skit wasn't better. Peach had an Italian accent?
@Sondheimist Apparently you're not up on current events... SNL went so far as to offer employees that didn't want to work with him "safe spaces". If that's not enough... there's more. Life exists outside of this article, ya know?
Is Wario stealing money again?
Isn't he the guy that has been doing some philanthropic work and also is based?
As long as he is helping people, I don't really care what he says.
Haters gonna hate.
Elon Musk is basically a real life Wario, trying to accumulate as much money as possible.
SNL is clever satire comedy. There's a lot of reading between the lines and keeping up with current events.
I mean the comments section here essentially illustrates what i mean, so many people have no idea who Elon Musk is, the fact that he's the richest person on the planet and the work he's done in the field of renewable energy has made him an important figure in the annuals of humanity.
But we have people like "i don't really know this guy"... - lol mother, why did you leave here? These people have mostly lost their minds.
Unfortunately i read the comments section here, my head hurts, i try to close my eyes and not think about it.
@Razer Jeff Bezos is the richest person on the planet.
A few cheesy chuckles but it just devolves into pervy grossness toward the end. Not SNL’s best work
No. Just no. I'm getting out of here.
Do I smell Elon Musk Derangement Syndrome in the comments?
Guys seems pretyy chill to me for someone that's planning on colonizing Mars.
That said, SNL is pretty stale.
I just don't think I get American humor any more. Sitcoms are almost never funny. Stand-up comedians rarely get a laugh out of me. I haven't laughed at a newly released comedy film in years. This left me completely stone-faced, as have 90% of the SNL skits I've seen.
I feel disgusting, but grimes in that peach outfit man...I think I need more God in my life:)
Nah... Didn't find it funny. On the other hand, I've never been a fan of the SNL type of humour. I've always been more of a Monty Python fan. 😉
@nessisonett that Forbes list is a bit old.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2021/01/07/elon-musk-is-now-the-richest-person-in-the-world-passing-jeff-bezos-.html
I think it changes every week though tbh.
This article is from January 2021, i wouldn't be surprised if it has changed by now though.
@Razer He surpassed him again in February. Tesla’s stock prices totally crashed then. Still, I genuinely couldn’t care less about two idiots with far too much money for their own good.
Without watching the video this seems funny. Still haven't, probably won't. I'll retain my sanity for the day.
i don't want comedy from elon i want him distributing his wealth
@Giancarlothomaz Satire and parody are protected in copyright law, Nintendo wouldn't have a leg to stand on in court.
@NGNYS you don't understand how a business works clearly. You have to pay the people who work for you and to do that you have to make more articles and unfortunately video games are pop culture and you have to kind of deal with it.
Just so dumb. On so many levels. My disappointment with humanity is immeasurable, but fortunately this will all be over soon enough.
@Ralizah comedy in general is dead and has been for a while.
@charlienash if you consider soon millions of years then okay.
Is... is that Kate McKinnon playing Waluigi????
That's my dream casting right there. 🤯
I think SNL will die long before then Jokerwolf
@Jokerwolf i see, that explain how Nintendo dint moved a lawsuit, when Robot Chicken made a parody of they characters.
@Ralizah Congratulations, you've made it passed adolescence. And probably college too. Was your stone-faced comment meant to evolve into a "these shows are only funny if you're stoned" joke? B/c stoner's between the age of 16-24 (and stoner's at heart) I'm pretty sure is the target audience.
Also, it's all been done before, and better. Anyway, welcome to the"get off my lawn club, where we scream at clouds". 😉
So, was this the cold open or in the episode? We usually watch SNL but decided not to last night b/c Elon Musk has no drawing power for us. I can't be bothered to dislike the guy, but he's not an actor, just a name. Do want to watch this skit though, if only for the train wreck it seems to be.🤣
Saturday Night Live should be banned from iOS platform.
@nessisonett It depends on the day, as so much of their net worth is in stocks. Mush recently passed Bezos because of crypto investments.
@chocolate_supra I agree, she’s awesome
@Razer
Annals* not annuals, just fyi
Apparently disliking something means you're weak these days.
But lets face it: This isn't funny.
@Giancarlothomaz It's a parody my guy, they can't get sued
@Bizaster You seem a bit emotional over there, did Elon Musk do something to you?
Weird how much overlap there is between people that say climate change will kill everyone unless we all switch to electric cars within 12 years and people that hate Elon Musk.
Based on the comments here, I will skip watching this.
I just find it amazing how this show is still on the air! It's just so... lame! Their writers are just terrible, the show has a real lack of talent these days, and the whole thing has become way too far left and political. It would be more pleasant to watch surgery.
@Euler Yeah it's almost like most people these days are nuts and have no idea what is best for anyone including themselves.
I had no idea Elon has aspergers, which he mentioned at the opening of the show, noting he's the first person with aspergers to host SNL. I was impressed he gave it his best on snl. New respect for him.
@WoomyNNYes Dan Ackroyd has Aspergers and Tourette’s. Somehow Elon forgot about y’know, perhaps the most iconic host in SNL history.
@Enigk You will never get 5 minutes of your life back...No matter what. That is how time works.
@nessisonett I think some Elon's monologue was written by Michale Che based on the joke he told about smoking pot on a podcast. That whole bit was SO Michael Che. Since SNL cast likely helped write the monologue, I think you can implicate other cast members of not knowing that. (I wasnt aware. That's interesting.)
Ever since I used to go to open mic nights at a comedy club in the city, I have accepted that writing new comedy every week isn't easy. So, I don't expect SNL to always have good shows, but still appreciate when a good sketch works.
@Bass_X0 nice Simpsons reference 😂
@nessisonett agreed lol.
@Kriandis It was a bad time investment. I learned nothing and enjoyed nothing. At least a bad financial investment can be reversed with some savvy further investments.
I don’t understand all the negativity with SNL and “comedy is dead” and this and that and all this negative talk in here… wow the negativity. My god, people…. It sounds like you need to loosen up and laugh a little?
I personally think SNL is on fire as of the past 2 - 3 years? ESPECIALLY the weekend updates… some of those have me rolling. I look forward to watching it every weekend (when it airs).
Last night’s episode wasn’t their best I know but it was really cool having someone other than an actor, or whoever, host, which is their usual format. I won’t talk about Elon himself because I know there are a lot of bad things that can be said too. But I am aware of but the comedy itself and I think it’s great. this sketch though haha wow that was some boundary pushing. But if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. I’m not here to persuade anyone, just wanted to let those afraid to comment know that it’s okay to laugh and comedy is far from dead. That’s like saying music is dead. Food is dead. Video games are dead. Oh well. Everything can’t be for everyone I suppose.
@Kalmaro Yes, but he's not a raging leftist so we're supposed to hate him.
Elon Musk is a piece of garbage:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/06/25/tesla-plant-firings/%3foutputType=amp
I seriously dont know what to think about this.
@PBandSmelly They are... what you call... hip cats.
Just realized this is how it'd look like if Lou Albano re-released "Do the Mario"
@Entrr_username SNL must be desperate for views if they want to start referencing video games all of a sudden.
I just watched this and I got a good laugh out of It.
This sketch just didn't do it for me, and it looks like I am not alone. SNL sketches have always been hit or miss for me and I think that's just the nature of the show. Even watching it as a teen I usually felt that half the sketches dragged on to long, even if they started out with a funny concept they had a tendency to beat a joke to death. Every once in awhile they have sketches that I find really funny. I do think they have some talented actors and writers.
I think my main problem with this sketch was that a lot of the jokes they used have already been beaten to death by a ton of Mario spoofs I have seen for like 20 years. Mario is actually a drug addict? Heard it a thousand times. Using the sound effects in unexpected ways? Definitely nothing I haven't seen before. References to these children characters engaging in adult situations and sexual misconduct? Pretty much a standard for these kinds of sketches. Basically just shoe horned a bunch of tired old jokes together in a really awkward way. It just didn't really do it for me.
@SuperWeird I'm seeing a lot of claims from those workers, but nothing to back them up.
that skit is not available to be watched in the US, only Europe is able to see the skit
Wow. This sketch is some cringy, desperate garbage. Just the worst of the worse type of crude thoughtless humor. What a waste.
While I didn't hate the sketch, this was a surreal watch. But the fact that they used Wario's Battle Canyon and Wario's Castle from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins made me think they actually knew more than they let on...
...But why did they give Peach an Italian accent?
I know Musk himself is somewhat controversial these days. But his companies SpaceX, Tesla and Solar City are developing technology that is critical to the future of humanity. And that's not open to debate. It's fact.
This skit was so unfunny. If it wasnt done with Nintendo characters, i dont think the internet would even be talking about it.
Watched the whole clip.
First, I am glad I don't stay up to watch SNL.
Second, most of it is probably not actionable by Nintendo based on parody fair use laws.
Third, the only exception may be the clip of Wario at the end.
@ChromaticDracula It's not the audience that needs to loosen up, it's the people running these networks. They are obsessed with their politics to the point where they have become intolerant and prejudiced, and it's resulted with their media influence basically not allowing anything out of their comfort zone.
@russell-marlow It's not really all of a sudden
@Bizaster Can't blame the man for not knowing wtf people identify as nowadays.
@ivory_soul SNL started in 1975, so that wouldn't be the original cast, either. I do agree that the 90's cast was the funniest, and the show introduced such actors as Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, Chris Farley, Will Ferrel, Tina Fey, and on and on. Still, I would agree that it's extra crass and unfunny now.
@PBandSmelly don't worry, it will be you one day as well.
@Heavyarms55 yeah but he said something j disagree with on twitter!!! Lol
I'm just here to say I've made thousands in profit on Dogecoin. 🐶🚀 🌙
SNL has been trash for at least 16 years.
This could have been funny but snl had to go for cheap, shock value laughs using children's characters-disgusting! I hope nintendo sues them and wins easily.
I haven't seen a funny SNL skit in years. This was terrible.
@Bizaster he said it was confusing, to which I agree. Criticism does not mean hate.
@Automated_Unit_4937 He's doing important work, that doesn't mean he's a perfect individual.
Doug Bowser (over this morning's video conferencing call this morning): "Mr. Furukawa! Mr. Furukawa-san, sir!"
Furukawa, tapping his pen tersely upon his board room table: 'Yes, Reggie?"
[silence]
Doug Bowser: "Um, well...my name is Doug Bowser, sir.
Furukawa: "It is? Are you sure?"
Doug Bowser: "Well, I've been working here for...for quite awhile now, sir...I mean... I mean, it's definitely okay that you would think that. Besides, I know you were probably just joking anyway. "
Furukawa (after a lengthy pause): "Ok."
Doug Bowser: "Well...um, anyway...heh heh...I guess what I wanted to say is that...I'm guessing you probably heard that Elon Musk was on SNL last night and, you know, in one of the sketches, he played the part of Wario. Isn't that awesome? I just wanted to know if -
Furukawa: - if I watched it? What do you think, Mr. Fils-amie?"
Doug's lips tremble as he begins to respond, but is interupted once again by his boss.
Furukowa: "Yes, of course, I watched it. My advisors provided me with a link as well as with a translated transcription of the segment in question, and a brief dossier on Mr. Musk. What did you want to know about it?"
Doug Bowser: "I...
Furukawa: "Look, I don't mean to sound rude, but - I am a very busy man. Could you please get to your point?"
Doug Bowser: "I mean, my last name is - actually, nevermind. Look...I was just wondering what you thought about it...about the sketch. Like, if you thought it was funny.
He pauses before adding, "That's all I wanted to know, sir."
Furukawa: "So, you're asking if I had found the sketch funny? Oh yes. I'm laughing. It was very amusing. Here, listen to me laugh."
After several seconds of dead silence, Doug Bowser says: "But, I didn't hear anything, sir..."
Furukawa: "Well, it might be difficult to understand, because I'm laughing fluently in 'they should expect a call from our f---ing lawyers' HAHAHA!
Doug Bowser: " Haha... "
I was never a huge fan of SNL, but they did have at least some of my respect until I realized they'll never have Weird Al as a host or musical guest, which is especially insulting since they have much less worthy people like Donald Trump, Peyton Manning, and this guy right here, Elon Musk. Maybe SNL isn't good enough for Al.
Whelp, I'm off to watch this episode. Elon Musk and Nintendo... Yeah.
I'm shocked at all this Elon Musk hate, he's a living legend. So if he cures blindness and paraplegics and gets us to mars he's off the hook? What does he have to do to not get so much hate, give all the money he earned away? Well let' start with you, give all you're money away and sell or your possessions (now you're not even on the net anymore you sold all your stuff remember) and help some poor person somewhere somehow. How exactly will Elon's money cure the world's problems? He'll just send a few billion to every third world country and and everyone is happy and fine? It's that simple is it. Well where did his money come from? If he's giving it away he can't earn more to give away while he makes electric cars and opens up space exploration. You people really suck today
@sirmrguitardude It's not an all good or all bad thing. People need to learn what nuance is. People are multi-facetted. Elon Musk's companies, SpaceX, Tesla and Solar City are developing technology that the human race will need to go forward as a species. Humanity needs that technology. And most governments are only interested in weapons development and personal political power.
That said, Elon Musk has proven himself to be rather ignorant on other issues and occasionally makes a fool of himself online. And he lives in such extreme luxury that most people can't even comprehend it.
But in 2021 in this world of factionalism/tribalism and black and white, yes or no, pick a side... you are expected to either love someone unconditionally or hate them and everything about them. That's not how the world works but it's absolutely how people behave.
I've seen good people torn down because of comments they made 30 years ago. Suddenly 3 decades of good work doesn't matter because he or she said something terrible in the past. And I've seen terrible people who had decades of being terrible, suddenly be lauded as heroes because they changed their mind on one little thing.
It's just how people are these days and it's annoying as hell.
I tried to watch it. I only got about 1 minute in. It's cringe to the nth degree.
Comedy is dead
@Bizaster Well it's SNL, I don't know what else I would call it. They aren't moderate, and they definitely aren't conservative, and they are to the left of most liberals.
Comedy is always hit or miss, but Peach's accent? 100% wrong. How do you even mess that up? No one on the show or in the writer group was like "What do you mean Peach's accent?"
The joke is on him, if anyone got it. 😂
Do people actually find this funny?
"it contains adult humour, bad stereotypes, drug references and blurred but explicit footage."
..all the best stuff in life.
@Megz3 yeah, people have sense of humor you know.
// errata corrige : ok i watched all the video, its very disturbing. You are right.
@Megz3 Not in the slightest.
I want my 5 minutes and 46 seconds back
@nessisonett Well, as I said to my partner, the way Musk came out with his Autism came across as being about him, rather than being about autism.
If it was about autism he may have felt compelled to research the condition's history with the show.
New Wario Land on Switch confirmed.
Didn't find it humorous, sorry.
I hope he builds Wario's castle on Mars.
@konbinilife oh no, whatever will we do without 14 more off-topic comments
@somebread Assuming they actually WERE off topic, I never saw what they were.
@somebread @Kalmaro they were all relevant to the conversation at hand.
It's clear NintendLife will let comments sway one direction, but not the other. they even deleted my comment you replied to. LOL!
way to push people away from your site nintendolife, you've gone the way kotaku and other crap sites.
i'm out.
@konbinilife I don't blame you, this site still gets some info in and I haven't found another site like this one that I like, so I'm here currently.
That, and last time I left, people thought I died or something. My fault for getting first comment so much, I guess :B
Only thing I know about this episode is that Musk apparently "jokingly" admitted that cryptocurrency is a scam, and shortly after cryptocurrency prices took a dive. Was this the wake-up call people needed to realize that it really is a scam?
You want fun? Waron Musk show you fun!
Who is SNL's audience at this point? Serious question. I haven't been able to figure out who actually watches it for at least 15 years. I can't see an obvious demographic, and I haven't encountered anyone, young or old, that can actually tolerate it in the real world. The young people that talk about it don't remember a history where it was ever funny at all, and the old people remember back when it used to be funny. It's horrible. Even by terrible comedy standards it's terrible. It's easier to find free Youtube content that's far far far funnier (even if it's not funny) than anything on SNL. Clearly it has an audience. Clearly it's making enough sponsors happy to make money and please the network to not cancel it and keep Lorne in charge. But WHO is this audience, exactly? And what chemicals or methods can be legally used to eliminate the pests? Humane methodology is preferred but not strictly a requirement.
@MatoFilipovic It was funny in the 70's and 80's. It was roll-on-the-ground hysterical at times back then. Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Gilda Radner (RIP), John Belushi (RIP), Jim Belushi, Dan Akroyd. Recurring guests of Candice Bergen, Martin Short, Eddie Murphy. Huge huge names in comedy that still reign supreme today outside the deceased (and even them, too, really.) It was designed as an American comeback to Monty Python in the UK. And it was good. The early 90's had bursts of good comedy with Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz. But it's been on a sharp and steady decline since then. The Farley era sloped into the Will Ferrell era, into the Jimmy Fallon era (which I thought was as low as low could get...but sadly I was mistaken), and it's gone down since then with whatshisname, whatsherface, that other guy...and that one with the thing that says that thing.....who am I kidding what little of it is memorable I try to forget now.
While it mightn’t be the funniest show anymore, looks like SNL’s ratings spiked this week. Ultimately that’s what counts. Get woke, go broke.
https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/elon-musk-snl-host-tv-ratings-1234969518/
@Mountain_Man Nah there is a saying in crypto: buy the rumour, sell the news.
Basicly when a big event is coming up, in this case Elon promoting DogeCoin on SNL, people are massively buying in the days/weeks beforehand, so when the actual event happens the price of the coin is already too far inflated, big holders with massive profits start dumping them. Basicly preying on inexperienced traders that expect the price to skyrocket.
A lot of traders I know were actually shorting DogeCoin on saturday.
SNL was always pretty lame. Remove the nostalgia goggles. It's just Hee Haw from New York, after all. In standup, you can spend 10 years developing your first 1 hour act. British serials: six episodes and Bob's your uncle. Nobody is funny enough to write live sketch comedy bangers every week. Although, the stuff they let Kyle and Beck produce and then never air on television is pretty legit. Elon performed better than I had anticipated. Yes, what I have seen from it is much like a trainwreck, but he wore that trainwreck like a fine piece of jewelry.
@Inc the show and cast have been cringe for decades. Idk how it stays a float other than no competition or paid propaganda.
@Heavyarms55 And yet people on Twitter will praise the worst humans. Weird how that works.
@tendonerd Social media brings out the worst in people. It's a big topic with a lot of nuances but the shield of a computer screen and often an anonymous screen name let's people say things far more harshly than the likely would in person.
