Perhaps the biggest part of today's firmware update is the addition of the Nintendo Switch Online hub - which allows subscribers to access all of the online services in one place. As noted in the update patch notes, an NSO icon has also been added to the Switch's Home Menu, and well...not everyone seems to be happy with it.
A quick search over on social media reveals a number of users who are annoyed about the fact it doesn't blend in with the rest of the user interface, like...at all. Here are just some of the many reactions:
https://twitter.com/RNGTime64/status/1333599745160351744

https://twitter.com/pupsiirox/status/1333597021127671809
We're sure Nintendo has a good reason for making the NSO icon stand out from the rest, and if we were to take a guess - perhaps it could be because it is the system's paid online service.
What do you think of this new icon? Is it bugging you as much as the Switch users above? Do you even care about what the Switch Home Menu looks like or are you more about the actual games you can play on Nintendo's hybrid system? Share your own thoughts down below.

Looks fine to me 🤷🏻♂️
I totally agree.
I'd be fine with it if it blended with the other buttons but the bright red screams, "LOOK AT ME" whenever the UI's opened. Which at best is just extremely distracting, but at worst, seems manipulative, like, "BUY AN NSO SUBSCRIPTION!"
They should take a cue from the last tweet and use one of those more subtle button designs.
EDIT: (Not to mention, this is an extremely kid-friendly console. Anyone else think that it's kind of a problem that the new shiny red button on the main menu is simultaneously an advertisement and a paywall?)
I'm too enamored that they finally changed something to the boring UI design to complain that it looks off lol it's kind of cool for now
Rise your Fists upset People!
Let the World feel your Suffer!
This Act of Unhollyness has to be revanged with all Upsetiness you can gather!
DOWN WITH THIS SORT OF THING!
Huh, I actually agree with the Home Menu complaints for once.
They just need to make it consistent with the other ones IMO. It shouldn't be that hard. But who knows if they'll update it.
the fact that they put this atrocious icon before basic functionality like folders...Nintendo is so delusional and money hungry sometimes it’s tacky
It does stand out a bit I think it looks a bit more natural on the light theme which is what I use so I'm not bothered by it. It's not like I'm sitting on the home menu staring at the UI when I'm playing my Switch anyway. It'd probably annoy me more if I didn't have an NSO sub, rendering it useless, which I suppose is the point.
Looks fine for me too.
As long the shape is not square.
People are hilarious. Talk about “first world problems”. The icon seems fine to me. This is even more petty than the Snake Pass menu icon fiasco. The amount of energy people are wasting on this is baffling.
@horizonisland How it looks aside, I actually think the new menu that the icon opens up is quite useful. Much more so than folders would be as they're completely unnecessary.
I think it should match the style of the other icons on the dock area at the bottom. It does look a bit garish at the moment.
It is to advertise all the reasons to not cancel your nso. Supposedly ps5 advertises games you don't even have on its screensaver so this is way more subtle than anything like that.
Now how about a filter for all games to let me see only the ones I have installed?
Maybe it sticks out more when using the home menu's dark theme? It's definitely more 'busy' feeling than the other icons, but I can't say that it bothers me.
While it won't bother be too much I do agree that it is an eyesore. As someone posted a subtile way of having the button but making it consistent in the article.
I understand Nintendo wants people to buy their online services so I think having the Red one stands out more then the grey one is a compromise but either one is consistent with the other buttons.
@BenAV is it really worth trying to give people a hard time about wanting to sort things logically on a computer? Show me an operating system with a flat file system.
Many people saying that the icon stands out, but at the top there are several extra user accounts showing up ... it doesn't make sense.
@BenAV As someone with dozens upon dozens of switch games, my switch home screen is a disorganized mess as even the organization options they give you when you view all your software titles are woefully inadequate and completely moot in the first place. Folders are something a EVERY UI should have in the 21st century and the fact that THIS is more important than providing a seamless and functional UI in the first place is embarrassing on Nintendo’s part. Hell, it took nearly FOUR years for you to be able to prioritize a software download and that is one of the most basic QoL features you could have!
@doctorhino @horizonisland Having your most recently played games on the home menu and then your whole software library sorted alphabetically is already the easiest and the most logical way to sort things for something like the Switch so I'm very happy with how they've handled it and hope they don't change it. A big improvement over the 3DS where trying to manually sort everything and keep it organised was a bit of a nightmare. Trying to do that with my 500 Switch games... no thanks.
It’s unforgivably gross looking. It’s not going to affect my life in any meaningful way but it’s just plain ugly.
not really bothered by little red circle
Thanks, everyone for supporting and not boycotting this "service".
Thank you tens of millions for paying for what was previously (mostly) free.
I wonder what other free things Nintendo will charge for now that they know how eager people are to pay for things that require virtually no effort on their part, and I wonder how many shills will defend the practice.
Thanks, everybody.
Sowed and reaped. Rept?
It's a funny how people are getting pissed over this, yet I can tottaly agree with them LOL.
Is there any way to remove it?
Love it... Has some very cool features too. For example: every NES and SNES game is loadable from the Hub, organized by the year of release, and even shows how old you were upon release (if the release date falls within your birth month).
Yeah... Maybe I'm just an oddball, but Nintendo fans just come across as overly nitpicky this Gen. Unless, it's an article about the WiiU. That's when everyone plays Hipster lol. Gimme a break
@JayJ : Surgery?
looks *****. really bad. awful.
Eh, it's on the Home menu so, whatever.
amiibo or in-game NSO reminders, now those affect the immersion and enjoyment of the games. I remember even my ex being put-off by how hard Yoshi's Woolly World pushed the amiibo.
@Silly_G Now I don't want to update my console lol
I mean... I'll survive, but it's very advertorial.
i mean, who cares, add a bit of flair to the overly simplistic UI
Man if the world had the same issues. 😂
It's like an ugly little round billboard advertising the subscription service. We should at least be able to delete it if we want to.
@BenAV Xbox does it that way too but at least they give you filters on your overall list and then a special section outside of that called pins. Which is more or less folders of shortcuts. I agree the 3DS is a pain.
The vita route of folders that hold games and no master list would kill functionality people use, so I see it more as an addition.
I think, at the very least, we should be able to hide it or delete it. I do like the idea behind it, though, having all the NSO stuff centralized there is nice. Plus, as they build on it in years to come, it'll become that much more useful.
@3RedTriangles I definitely see 5 red triangles
I literally can't care.
It's so strange. It's the one way this update annoys me. I'm a graphic designer so I could make a better icon, but it's 2 in the morning where I live, so not now. It's not terrible, but I still think that they should've just had the icon have a grey/white background.
If I had to choose between fixing the icon and world peace, I'd need an hour to think about it.
Reason #84 to mod your Switch. My custom homescreen is a sight to behold.
@doctorhino There are definitely always ways to improve things. It's just folders specifically that I don't see much use for. Even just something like a simple search function, while not really necessary, wouldn't be a bad addition. As long as I can find anything I'm looking for in a few seconds like I can with the current UI then that seems pretty good to me though. The only slight annoyance I have is that when you're scrolling the list quickly, it can take icons a second to load up but even that's not a big deal.
@jump careful now.
Broke: Nintendo needs to add themes and folders
Woke: Nintendo needs to change a red icon into a grey icon
It's supposed to stand out
I don't care how it looks, I'm upset about its lack of features.
It could be more stylised like the other Icons. But I really don't mind it.
I'm always amused by the things that will bother someone. Not only do I not mind the icon at all, I like the functionality of it. It's cool to see all the Nintendo Online stuff a button click away and browsing through it reminded me to turn off automatic renewal.
I like it. And yeah it is meant to stand out. Also why wouldn’t it be red it’s basically the switch icon. Grey NSO though may be more consistent with the others is bland. Hell it adds some more color to it if nothing else. I didn’t notice it being a big deal myself. 🤷♂️
@Supadav03 I always hated the notion of "first world problems"
Just because there are bigger problems and people with bigger problems,.means we shouldn't complain about the smaller stuff.. ever?
I noticed that something is wrong with it at the first sight. However, I dont mind it at all.
It looks like I downloaded a cheap ass app on my phone Not my cup of tea nither.
@Brydontk LOOK I"M RIGHT HERE KILL ME DO IT KILL ME NOW. LOL Thats just what to button is saying to me.
I hate it, too! That big red NSO button sticks out like a sore thumb and looks so ugly against the otherwise clean homescreen 🤮
I suspect it's that sort of people who is unsatisfied with everything, but in this particular case they sorta have a point. That NSO icon fits well into "mildly infuriating things" category
Haha, I haven't installed this update yet, but looking at this wreck, if I had, I'd have been upset that the icon even existed in the first place, and then upset right after that it's inconsistent with the others. XD
People love to just complain especially Twitter weirdos
@Supadav03 So what you meant is "this is not important to me"?
All this, and you still can't send one of your online friends a text message.
@BenAV Plenty of use for me. I hate that I can’t sort all my of rhythm games into one folder for quick and easy access. It sucks that I can’t put all of the free to play games into one folder. I wish I could put all of my indie game titles into a single folder. It would be awesome to be able to put my backlog of titles into a folder for reference instead of having it lodged in the bottom of my library. Or what if I had friends over? Think of how much more convinient it would be if I could access a folder with all of my multiplayer titles in one grouping instead of moving back and forth between my whole library looking for one. The sorting they have is fine, but personally, I would also like the option to have manual sorting to suit my tastes also. The use for folders is not to replace what there is now, what we have is fine. It’s just an additional way to personalize your collection of games. Quite honestly, I loved folders for 3DS. I made a folder for my 3DS eShop downloads, DSiWare games, Media and Apps, and Virtual Console titles. It’s just that feeling of being able to group your games in a way that makes sense to you individually that makes me and a majority of Switch players hopeful in folders getting added to the Switch someday
I agree and I appreciate the work that went into the article.
Yes, it sticks out. They could get rid of the red background or place it in the middle of the other icons. But it's really not a problem for me. I'm more bothered by the lack of folder support.
Imagine being upset by this.
I’m not ‘annoyed’ but yep - it’s bad design and forcing the service in our faces. Tone that s**t down Nintendo. And that’s from a subscriber.
It does stand out, but it really doesn’t bother me.
First-world problems, amirite?
@BenAV Far enough—I don’t want to manually sort my Switch games either. I would love it if you could automagically sort games into “folders” based on categories like series or genre using an algorithm so I can see all my RPGs in one folder or all my Pokémon games in another. So your home menu is always convenient and evolving with little effort on your part so you always have easy access for a game to play for your current mood and stuff like that. idk...at this point i’m just rambling but you did raise a fair point about the nightmare that was/is my 3DS home screen..
Yeah, it does look a bit tacky.
@horizonisland A way to automatically sort/filter by genre could definitely be interesting. I'm not sure if that's something they'd be able to implement though unless all currently released games already had that data stored somewhere. The eShop listings for games do have a list of genres so maybe it could be possible, not sure.
I agree, it's annoying! Too flashy, too much in your face.
Rando whiners on twitter isn't news.
It is very ugly and ruins the balance of the homescreen, yes.
Why dose it matter ur playing games in it , who’s looking at the menus worrying about it , what is wrong with ppl who cares
It is nice to have something else to complain about. I feel we don’t focus on the negatives enough 😀
People need to get out more 🙄
I understand why they made it that way (Sony do a similar thing with a PSN icon on the PS4 top level menu), but I don't like the inconsistency.
The rest of the update is pretty cool though, especially having easier access to screenshots/videos without pulling out the memory card (or using social media).
@jump Careful now.
@doctorhino ''supposedly''
Backgrounds are an extension of the app you have selected. If you're hovering over Astro Bot, that's what the background becomes: https://e00-elmundo.uecdn.es/assets/multimedia/imagenes/2020/11/06/16046563050410.jpg
Only if you select the store you may see games you don't own, but that's really what the online store is for after all: https://bgr.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/PS5-UI.jpg?quality=70&strip=all
Dammit all to hell, 2020 strikes again!!! When will it all end, when dammit, WHEN!!!!! =XD
It could be worse, but as a graphic designer, every second I spend in the menu feels like a circle of hell.
The QR-code for pics/vids are brilliant, but they really need to grey out the Online app-icon.
Moaning seems to be the in thing at the moment.
If it isn't positive keep it to yourself.
instead of having to resort to this why not well make it worthwhile
I hate it too for a different reason: It almost forces you to take a subscription. Heck no, I won't do that!
Am I the only one using the white theme?
I like seeing everyone's games on their home screens - feels a bit like peering in through a living room window to see whats on TV
@Silly_G you're welcome
i wonder if subscription customers are going down, the icon way too in your face about NSO. its not even that helpful either, its just a shortcut to view NSO offers from the eshop
It's supposed to stand out. It looks fine.
Ah, who cares? I like that it becomes more prominent. The color isn’t a problem. I don’t stare att my switch menus all day.
Yeah, I totally agree with the complaints. This is just not necessary, it looks very forceful, it's not good design from the end-user perspective at least (based on all the well/long-established rules of good design), and it clashes with the rest of the interface and icon design to create something that is visually intrusive and actually quite irritating. If you have any level of OCD whatsoever, as I do, this would be very annoying to see every time you boot up your system--because it just looks wrong and cannot be fixed by the user. I do not like Nintendo's patent intention here, shoving the service hard in the faces and minds of users so they are kinda compelled against their will to check it out, and I hope it notices the negative comments and simply makes the icon blend in with the rest of the menu's design.
If something as trivial as this upsets people, then they need to have some other things going on in their lives. We're talking absolutely minute nonsense here. Off to see what they're crying about in the update article now...
2020 just keeps getting worse.
Who cares?
#getalife
@WiltonRoots Clearly you are ignorant of how people actually work: What you assert is nothing is actually quite disturbing to some people, particularly people with any level of OCD whatsoever for example (but even just people who like nice cohesive visual design--they're probably a bit OCD also), and that's apparently quite a few more people than you can process. So, basically, your view is not worth anything because it only adds to the issue rather than addresses or fixes it--and it really would be a very simple fix indeed. Nintendo created this completely unnecessary issue, very intentionally (the bad kind, not the good kind), and now I think Nintendo needs to fix it--and the story really should be that simple.
@impurekind Can't even be bothered to read that, I'll wait until you finish editing the hell out of it...chill Winston.
I cannot imagine getting angry about this. Yeah, I wish it was consistent with the other icons, but this way, it stands out, and that’s the point. 95% of Switch owners don’t pore over system update notes, and wouldn’t notice a new button on their home screens if it looked exactly the same as the other buttons.
It’s excruciatingly ugly
I didn't even know it was there until I read this article. I can't say that I look at the home menu for long enough to care either way. Besides, life's kinda short, isn't it? And anyone unironically having a meltdown over it must be one those overly dramatic, everything offends me types that seem to plague the internet these days.
It'd be cool if the red was about 30% less saturated. Otherwise, I just need to jump into a game or something quick when I'm playing on TV so the icon doesn't get a chance to burn my retinas. (Dark Mode life!)
This button symbolises everything that's wrong with Nintendo.
What about people who have a life, who are capable to retain their own silly frustrations, who find a new button on switch screen menu perfectly fine or don’t give a f* ? I feel very attacked.
#FirstWorldProblems
Oh look, a change!
No wonder people hate it!
My biggest takeaway was the extent of gamers' obsession with dark themes.
People tend to have problem with anything and everything new.
@chardir the button is fine what is this flock of perfectionists.
I actually LOVE the icon because it's cheerful and seasonal. It's the OTHER icons that should be changed to match it by being more cheerful. The quiet sober style doesn't suit Nintendo AT ALL!!!
@Friscobay And now you see what Nintendo has done: I bet you wouldn't have felt attacked if they'd simply put in a button that actually matched the rest of the interface visually and therefore no one had any complaints over stuff for you to not get upset about.
@Froggievilleus Yes, they are indeed #FirstWorldProblems. And what's your #FirstWorldProblem with that?
@liam_doolan This issue actually needs a poll. I think a poll will uncover that a silent majority like the icon or don't mind it or think it's actually all the other icons that should change to match the bright friendly cheerful seasonal and nintendoish NSO icon.
Does it stick out a bit? Sure. But some of the reactions here are a bit extra and over the top. I can understand being a bit put off by it. But some of the comments here seem to imply some evil scheme was hatched by Nintendo over a little red button on their UI and it really isn't that deep
@UmbreonsPapa Not some "evil" scheme; just a bit of insidious and forceful marketing by very intentional design, and clumsy design at that, which was entirely unnecessary and can be addressed and fixed extremely easily.
I think it's fair enough that some people are expressing an issue with that. After all, these people paid literally hundreds of dollars/pounds for this system and the experience that comes with it, of which the interface design is part of the overall experience. So I think it's perfectly reasonable of these paying customers to expect the quality they deserve for their hard-earned money and speak up and let Nintendo know when they're not delivering it, even when it comes to something like the system's menu/UI design.
Do you disagree that customers should have any right to speak up regarding the quality of the products, features and services they have paid their hard-earned money for?
Do you not believe that should be a right afforded to them as part of the seller-buyer contract they created when they paid for their Switch?
Or should all customers just take what they get and keep quiet after they've paid for something, which in the digital age can often change and morph from the thing they actually paid for and were attracted to and wanted in the first place?
Those are all serious questions that I think all the people in here complaining about and belittling the customers who are complaining should maybe be asking.
I mean, who's side are we actually on here: The corporate giant's or our own?
It's not driving me crazy but it does look off
Would’ve been better to match the icons
Now my true comment.
I’m gonna be sick, Nintendo is evil
People moaning about something on twitter!? REALLY!? 😆
First of all I like it.
Secondly, unlike a lot of people it seems, I don't sit and stare at the UI for hours on end I play actual games on my Switch.
@TheFullAndy Would you hate it if it matched the rest of the icons?
@impurekind
I wouldn't care either way, as I stated I don't stare at the UI for hours on end.
Then you have nothing worthwhile to say here.
People paid hundreds of dollars/pounds for their Switch systems, which the menu and interface is part of, and they have every legally/contractually-created right to point it out, and indeed request it be changed, if they feel Nintendo has altered part of the UI design [after the fact] to the detriment of their end-user experience.
But is seems to me that simple concept is beyond you or something.
It breaks the logic, so some people visually stumble over this every time. Not a FirstWorldProblem but gaming is essentially modern world replacement for the thrill of hunting our food. So compare this to the situation that the sun is shining in your face while you are scouting for your potential meal. ..or maybe not.
@Sun-Wu_Goku Do you have a #FirstWorldProblem with #FirstWorldProblems?
@impurekind I think it's perfectly fine to express that something could be improved in a calm and measured manner. I think it's completely silly to suggest it's anything deeper than what it is.
I also think it's important to take a deep breath, a step back and ask if something like this, in any way, hinders you from using your Switch as intended. I mean, does your Switch still power on and are you still able to power a game up and play? If the answer is yes, then I think a bit of perspective needs to be kept.
Again, I acknowledge it sticks out compared to the rest of the buttons. So I'm not entirely dismissing the criticism. But I can either give keep giving it any more energy than is required or I can just ignore it for the time being and continue on gaming and focus my energies there.
@impurekind
You took that thick didn't you big lad! And I will say what I want where I want, you are no authority here, or anywhere I imagine.
Are people only allowed to criticise? I see you jumping on a number of people here because they aren't fussed about it, why don't you go do one.
You must be a sad little individual if this is how you react to people's opinions not conforming to your own.
Yeah, not feeling the NSO icon. I already didn't like the nso nes & snes icons, deleted those.
@UmbreonsPapa I've not seem many examples of people saying anything other than they think it's crap and would like it changed.
And I personally like to point out that I think Nintendo was very deliberate in what it did, and therefore the complaints and frustration, and maybe even a little bit of anger at being even remotely manipulated--let's not say anything to pretend it's not entirely possible to manipulate people through specific design, or that this is not what is going on here in any way, shape or form--is perfectly reasonable.
I don't think there's much more going on here than that.
Well, there's a bunch of ignoramuses with #FirstWorldProblems complaining that the people who are making the complaints about the change in the design of the product [after the fact] that they paid their hard-earned money for are just suffering from #FirstWorldProblems. See the sheer irony there....
@TheFullAndy #FirstWorldProblem much!
I just dismissed you.
And you never even paid for anything from me, so I owe you nothing.
Ha!
Honestly, the button would have caused far less of an uproar if it were at the top, opposite to the user icons. The inconsistency just looks plain unprofessional.
@Doktor-Mandrake Yes. Yes it does. It’s called having perspective.
@Strumpan No, I mean it’s just unimportant. Has 2020 taught you nothing?
@impurekind
Point out to me where I said anything close to a first world problem which you seem so obsessed with.
The rest of your comment is pretty much gibberish but you seem to spout a lot of that.
"I just dismissed you" Wise up hahahaha
@TheFullAndy You didn't, but others did, and now I'm using that same idiotic reasoning on you.
Don't get your panties all in a twist--#FirstWorldProblems
See how it works?
The irony of the people in these comments hahahhaha
They're being far more whiny here on NL then any of those twitter posts pmsl
@impurekind
No I don't. Why would you use it on me, that is a pretty idiotic thing to do don't you think?
@Supadav03 How does you having a perspective dismiss anything I said.
It doesnt.
@TheFullAndy #FirstWorldProblem
@Doktor-Mandrake Guess you’ll have to think on it junior? 🤷🏻♂️
The answers will come in time...
@Supadav03 the answers will come in time?
Well that's good because you didnt actually answer my question, also imagine calling someone in their 30s "junior"
Some people dont like the UI... deal with it.
This might surprise you but people have always complained about smaller stuff before you were even born, like weather for instance.. no amount of you crying is ever going to change that
I suppose appearance supersedes convenience... the new icon is a bit helpful.
@Doktor-Mandrake 😂👍🏼
I actually find it much more disheartening that you are in your 30s.
The entitlement is strong with this one...
@Azuris And don't forget to blame your local politician!
An article about whiners whining about entitlement.
Wow, Pulitzer prize winning stuff here....
@NathanTheAsian You know, it is in fact possible to have both, right?
@SwitchVogel LOL Build on it. Wow you are giving Nintendo credit. The basic online gaming with others is still not stable. Let's hope they fix that first.
@TheFullAndy he does this a lot, then responds to you with a sentence if you don't share his view, then edits the bejeezus out of it to make it look like you've responded to 6 or 7 paragraphs. Surprised he hasn't plugged his blog yet.
It looks fine to me, yes it does stick out quite a bit but I don’t think it looks terrible like people are saying
@WiltonRoots
The thing that concerns me is the people upvoting his comments!
@TheFullAndy He's upvoting himself. Lol we haven't had one of his meltdowns in here for a while!
Just updated before even seeing this article properly. And man I have to agree with all the complaints. It sticks out like a thumb in a sore eye... or how the heck did that saying go... Anyway it sticks out too much, not to mention it's basically an ad.
I kind of like the asymmetry.
@WiltonRoots
You mean he has created various accounts so he can upvote his comments?!
No one is that pathetic surely?!
@TheFullAndy Nah he's not that bad...
Edit: he does have one more account I know of, he went off big time on Splatoon before it came out.
It's a menu button - how long are you going to be looking at it before you start playing games? It's nowhere near as bad as the rubbish / invasive sidebars when playing the NES & SNES games.
Left hand not talking to the right hand is a common issue with the switch.
This button could pave the way to a simple messaging/voice chat/party chat option.
@WiltonRoots @TheFullAndy Hahaha!
Oh, by the way: https://inceptionalnews.wordpress.com/
@impurekind
Yeah I won't be clicking on any link you share bud.
There were riots in Portland last night because of this.
It’s strange. They should just make the red be the same colours as the other backgrounds.
@impurekind That actually made me laugh.
@Supadav03 What entitlement? I never even said if I like the new icon or not, for all you know I like it
The point here is that people do and will complain about problems in the first world, your constant crying wont change that
Surely you have better things to do with ur time? I know I do
Funny thing is, at my age, I know that complaints can vary from degree, only a child would think only big issues can be discussed and not the smaller ones.
@TheFullAndy How will I live....
@WiltonRoots The actual article it linked to was pure coincidence. LOL
My issue with it is more the placement than the color (which IS horrible and poor design, no argument here).
I think it would have been better to be at the far right if the icons. In that way, you’d have the full set and then the red dot. It would stand out less. This is a design strategy where you place a more prominent item at the end (reading left to right) of a list, so the reader doesn’t “focus” on the one item first and neglect the rest. You do this in advertising, for example.
It’s also that I will likely, as many others, be using the news and eShop icon more, so this wastes touches to get there.
Let the rioting begin!!!!
@Sinton Crazy how simple the solution is, right.
#firstworldproblems
@WiltonRoots
Just checked and you can't upvote your own comment so he has a band of followers or has created numerous accounts.
Either way it's all a bit sad.
@impurekind Didn't click on it, I was laughing at the posting of the link.
@Burning_Spear I know, it was almost as bad as the Sword & Shield riots in Seattle.
@Marios-love-child At this point I don't even know who's being ironic while using this hashtag.
So, if you're using it seriously, I'll simple say:
Do you have a #firstworldproblem with #firstworldproblems?
@WiltonRoots My intent works either way. LOL
@impurekind Well, there are a few post here that are a bit over the top in reaction. Even your first post way on the bit much side, implying Nintendo is forcing people to do something against their will. I mean, are we really gonna go there? Yes, they're trying to advertise their online service and want people to check it out. Besides the appearance of the icon, it is a pretty neat and useful app once you click on it. Better than having this stuff buried in the eshop app.
But fair points that many of the reactions here are pretty measured.
It looks obnoxious and screaming "Here I am!" Not to mention everyone hates nso
@Justaguest
I don't hate NSO, couple of quid a month I get to play games online and have a selection of great SNES/NES games nevermind the awesomeness that is Tetris 99 and Mario 35.
Well worth the 18 quid a year.
@WiltonRoots I think I actually have about three NintendoLife accounts.
Don't explode.
People complain about one odd icon on their Switches, while their phones look like Christmas trees.
I feel like they should just remove the word online on the icon but that would be confusing and if they just changed the icon to the letters NSO it would just look uglier
@krzysztof81 Well that point is true. But Christmas trees have consistency in the very fact that the way they look is all over the place and each person chooses for themselves. LOL
Do you still need the nes and snes apps to play the nso games using this new app?
For me, the real story about this change is that following the update, and the Nintendo Switch Online stuff becoming centralised via the hub icon, it also means that users with a UK Nintendo Switch Online membership are no longer able to access the different US and Japanese NES/SNES titles in the respective apps as before if they created a US or Japanese user account on the same Switch.
I don't mind it. It's just a reminder that I need to renew my membership in March cause I surely would've forgot.
@SMUGSLOTH69 Personally, I actually don't mind the "online" bit because I do understand that they're trying to advertise their service; the "online" under the icon can distinguish it from the two other buttons that have some color to them. So if they made the button grey, but the icon and the word "online" stayed red to draw attention but not so much that it's a neon billboard for NSO, then I feel like it would fit in with the consistency of the UI design and I doubt people would have issue with it.
I personally didn’t even know about this until now. What does it do? Put the NSO NES and SNES things into one app? Or what?
Why'd you buy Nintendo Switch Online?
Person A: To play my favorite games online, like Mario Kart and Smash Bros
Person B: Because Nintendo is holding the Retro Games hostage and I really needed to play Super Metroid again
Person C: Because the icon on the bottom of the home menu was bothering me
Just another classic bandwagon example of how stupid people are. Not a big deal in any kind of way. Personal issues with design choice doesn't constitute a bad design decision.
This is why I hate people with OCD they are cry babies like damn I didn't even hardly notice it at all. Such first world problems lol
A bunch of virgins complaining about something that doesn't affect anything at all. I think it looks cool.
@Vasilios
OCD is a very real and serious condition.
Don't be an idiot.
@Edu23XWiiU Why feel the need to link virginity to this? This literally has no connection and it's quite honestly incredibly rude
Petty. It's just an icon. People just want to be upset.
IT'S
JUST
AN
ICON!!!
This is like the time yall got mad at the SM3DAS cartridge. Sure it looks out of place but they could just make it more 'minimalistic' like the other icons and I wouldn't care! Like seriously people, are we gonna get mad at EVER SINGLE UI CHANGE?!?!?!?
2020 outrage culture..
There's a new icon? Does it let me sort by genre or put games into folders? 'cause otherwise I don't really care.
I'd like it if it had some sort of functionality beyond being almost the same as the NSO page on the shop, but no, other than the NES and SNES list it's exactly the same. The widget boils down to a random ad you have pasted on your home screen and can't even get rid of once you buy NSO. I don't hate it or anything, I just really wish it had some more meaning to it.
@Heavyarms55,
So true, but it does look a little odd compared to those other icons on the menu, I downloaded the update late last night, and as soon as I saw the online icon, I knew there would be trouble.
Sigh... There's always something to complain about, isn't there?
Seriously? That is the least of the problems with the interface, we need more icons on the screen, Nintendo is acting like Apple
Frankly, I'm more bothered by the MiiVerse icon that remains on the 3DS despite the fact that the service was discontinued several years ago. At least the Nintendo Online icon connects to an operational service.
@johnvboy Yeah, I looked at it, thought it was odd too, but then 4 seconds later moved on with my life. Lol
@Heavyarms55,
Same here, it's not that big of a deal, and they may even change it at some point.
My first thought eas surprise and excitement because when my Switch wanted to do an update I just figured it was a stability one or something. When the Switch restarted and I saw the icon I was excited about what the new shiny icon was about. It's a good idea to have that stuff accessible and easier to manage but since it doesn't match the other icons I think the complaints are valid.
@TheSmashTheorist "EVERYONE STOP BEING SO @&#$ING MAD!" 😂
Let the World feel your Suffer!
This Act of Unhollyness has to be revanged with all Upsetiness
@Azuris I'll remember this next time I read any complaint of yours
(Ren & Stimpy announcer voice) HOW LONG CAN RESIST THE BUTTON? THAT SHINY BUTTON THAT BECKONS EVER CLOSER? WILL IT BE PUSHED ERASING THE SHOW...er SWITCH'S ENTIRE EXSISTENCE? Tune in next week.
I don't mind it but they could move it to the top left where the User Icons are.
It's fine as it is. No complaints.
I see literally no issue. Everyone on Twitter is a bunch of babies
Im Fine with it also..
I like it and it looks fine to me
Welcome to 2020, the year that complaining is as normal as breathing.... I could not care less...
@doctorhino just go all the way to the right. It will show all the installed games you have and you can filter it how you want.
I like having a place to look up NSO content (free trials and small stuff aren't all that obvious on the eShop) but it's too bright and draws attention away from the game icons.
Meh. People are just looking to complain about something at this point.
@Nin10doh I notice that from the start this story was made..
@JoeyTS Oh, you're the dude that speaks madurity! Congrats! And, in the meantime, but a sense of humor
@Vasilios Do you have a #firstworldproblem with #firstworldproblems?
@Dirty0814 I don't see a single filter. Are you talking about the sorting? Cause I can't just show my installed games, it has all my archived ones mixed in too.
@impurekind Definitely not the same thing lol
@Edu23XWiiU No one else here felt the need to link this to what you're implying. It literally has nothing to do with it. It dismisses fair criticism and is clear intention of insulting people who aren't into the look of the icon. It's not really a big deal but I personally wouldn't mind the icon being consistent with the others. If you think it's fine, then that's your opinion. You don't need to insult people for believing differently
@JoeyTS Lol, what a highschool thing to say on top of that. I wouldn't bother with this one.
I think this is kind of a ridiculous complaint, also given the awesome new features we have been given in this update. Also, these tweets are just flexing all there 1st party games lol😂
I noticed it immediately after the update, so I guess they designers did their job. Not a good one, but they did it.
I'm fine with it. I play games, not look at home screen all day. 😂
@doctorhino if you scroll all the way over to all software it shows you only what is downloaded or played via game card. If you don't want it on your system then remove it by going over it and pushing the + button and manage software uninstall. It will be removed. That is a list of only what is dled and what you have not uninstalled. As for sorting you can sort by time you last played so last played to the games you haven't played for months or sort by total game time played in each game by title alphabetically or by publisher.you can sort by pushing the R button
@Brydontk hm I see
@Dirty0814 So we have a difference in opinion on what we want here. I still want to be able to see all my games without going to store, entering my password and redownloading them. So if I want a game I just click the icon and redownload it.
You are saying delete everything you don't use and then if you want to remember what games you have go to the store, but that is pretty unideal. I am pretty aware of how to use all the options it's just not great to forget about games you already own because you don't go to the store all the time. A simple filter that says "installed games" would work just fine, Xbox already does this and lets you still see all your other games.
It really should be on a grey circle background like all the other icons, and then just make the Switch logo in red instead!
I'll get used to it, but, I think I prefer it without it since I'm unlikely to ever use that button for anything. I'm not really a fan of feature creep and it's cool to add features for the people that use them but I wish that kind of stuff was optional for the people who would prefer a cleaner interface.
@doctorhino if you go all the way down to the bottom of all software there is a quick link to take you right to your software that's not downloaded without having to go through the stores other pages. What you want requires the use of internet regardless because you would be redownloading it. I find it pretty straight forward and not a issue. Even on other systems I find it pretty much the same except you can see the games mixed in with others. I prefer to see what I have dled and what I don't. The difference between switch and other platforms is you are always logged in online on other systems opposed to on the switch. To be able to see what you have not dled it is saved online in the cloud so you have to go to the store otherwise you would be logged in all the time. The switch is streamlined because you are not required to be logged into your internet. As for how this is laid out I see no problem with it except not being able to sort what you don't have dled on your account page. Other than that it works pretty well.
You could also just get a big as card 400 or more and dl all your games onto it. It's what I do and all major games that have big file sizes I tend to own physically anyways.
It doesn't bother me one bit. The home screen menu has way bigger problems than a tiny icon.
@SpaceboyScreams Yeah, with the effect of potentially geting banned.
It doesn´t look right, but useful.
@Dirty0814 The concept of a request is something that I understand how to work around but I still want them to add because it would make MY life easier. Not something that I just need to learn a workaround for, I am well aware of how to use my switch and your method still requires a password and an internet connection just to see all the games I own...
Happy to have that addition to my home screen.
It looks fine, and it is meant to highlight NSO functionality so people can find it, particularly who just bought the new bundle.
In modern interface language, it's basically a large, unhidable, permanently unresolvable notification dot, and that alone is unforgivable even before how much it clashes with the rest of the UI.
It's horrendous.
It's the same Icon as is on the phone app. Honestly I'm sure if it were something different, users would complain it's "confusing to have two icons for the same thing"... folks need to stop being so neurotic over every detail in life.
@impurekind
Easily possible, but the nitpicks are also as easily possible to stop
It's already grown on me y'all just too ocd and phantom ocd
Not so worried about its appearance (it is kinda loud though), but I do 100% agree that the app is totally useless and is essentially an advertisement. I'm thinking Nintendo added it to the home screen to flout its features to try to get people to sign up for it that haven't already. The app itself doesn't serve any useful purpose for people who already subscribe.
@jump careful now
Clearly people haven't enough to worry about
It doesn’t bother me quite so passionately as some, but it should’ve been more understated, yeah.
@Supadav03
"The amount of energy people are wasting on this is baffling."
no one is like sending death threats or storming the nintendo offices with pitchforks or recording themselves destroying their switches over this or anything; people are using the exact amount of energy to complain about this as you are to complain about their complaining.
@NathanTheAsian You don't know much about OCD, do you.
@Vasilios I love how ignorant that was. Genius.
Initially I was thinking what an odd choice of colour there and I was thinking why couldn't Nintendo put a globe icon similar to what they have used in the past for internet browsers but it won't be consistent with the branding for NSO hence be even more odd and be mistaken for a browser or network settings. I am sure we will all get used to the new icon soon. Or Nintendo could have put it in settings but then most Switch owners won't know about it.
Imagine if that parental controls icon came today... I think there will be an even bigger outcry than this. People will say "Ahh I hate this orange icon in the middle of my screen!".
Is it an eyesore from a graphic design point? Yes.
Does it bother me at all? Not in the slightest. Too busy playing Age of Calamity to care about a silly home icon. 🤯
I've always wanted NES and SNES buttons. They were so close
The fact it's intentionally ugly is insidious as hell...
As always the gaming industry exploits the gamer neat freak mentality. Buy Nintendo Online and it goes away... Evil
It is different and a bit garish but right now I would rather have a Covid proximity detector on the Switch that ties into my Phone so I know whether any infected gamers are nearby.
Oh and folders could be an improvement but I wish we had a Wii like home screen.
@Iggy-Koopa you sir have my favorite comment
In my defence, I like Pokemon Unite. Otherwordly I love the new update on the firmware. I love Nintendo so much!
I think it should have been placed at the end.
it looks too loud and ugly, needs a gray background and red symbols
Its icon doesn't match the aesthetics of the other home menu icons, its interface is very sluggish even with a good internet connection, and most of its functions merely send you to the eShop instead of working natively.
It seems like Nintendo was just testing the waters with it first. It definitely needs work if they want to implement it.
I like how this random article about a little red icon has over 200 comments about nothing at all. What an amazing era we live in.
I too have issues with a little red dot on a home screen that I see for the 1 second I fire up my switch and jump into a game. Words cant describe how angry and hateful I get in that 1 second. The red dot needs to go pound sand. Or find a hole and go live in it. Forget the pandemic. Let's focus on the red dot, I beg of you.
Actually I dont see any reason to have that icon there in the first place. If you want to play nes or snes games you still need tp have those two big red ugly icons next to your real games.
Pure laziness.
@COVIDberry
Ok
Haha but to be Honest, it depends on the Degree of your Anger.
Some will go Rampage for that little Icon, others will just be molested by it and recommend a better Solution.
A constructive Complain is totally ok
To add some more:
Rise your Fist for Angerfist!
@60frames-please That would be great to give users the option to hide it. Unfortunately it is basically an advertisment so I doubt that will happen.
Couldn't care less. It's like 10 years ago when my PS3 got a yellow plus in the top-right corner.
First world problems
People just love to complain.
Nintendo’s original plan for the icon was a close up of Mario’s Odyssey nipples so count your blessings people.
Source: Fake news.
I always thought the same of the PSN logo on the media bar on PS3, I guess I got used to it there, that here it kinda looks normal.
I have a NSO subscription, but I HATE THAT ICON! it's literally begging people to buy the subscription which is the only way to play online now.
@horizonisland To be fair, PS5 launched without folders and seems to be a clone of Switch's minimalist OS....maybe folders are taboo in Japan?
In fairness I didn't know that the button existed after the update except for the fact it was blaintly obvious. Maybe everything one color is the real issue here.
It does indeed stand out and look a bit out of place compared to the rest. They should take the red background out at least. The BIGGER question is: WHERE in the F#C!< are FOLDERS and THEMES already?!! And WHEN will the HOME BUTTON light ring finally GLOW?!
It's basically a huge, needless Ad begging for more subscribers. Everything could've been placed either in eShop tabs or System Options.
@JoeyTS Ok Grimey, have a nice day
Lol wtf calm down
Are you serious? People are ACTUALLY complaining about an icon on a screen?! Jesus. What is wrong with people 🙄🤦🏾♂️Who gives a $#!+?! Just play your damn games and don't use it if it bothers you so much. More important things in life than how an icon on a screen is presented🤦🏾♂️Sorry .. this is just ridiculous me.
tbh they should of put it on the right side.
I like the new button for Nintendo Switch online. its too bad that it cannot be disabled apon user request. or better yet, have the ability to customize what buttons are shown at at the bottom of the screen as well as the order that they are in.
in terms of the button for Nintendo Switch Online; Nintendo should remove the secondary short-cuts for the NES and SNES libraries of games so that won't have duplicate short-cuts for these apps. an option for that would be nice.
It's horrible & should be optional for us who don't play multiplayer games on switch & don't have NSO.
@Northwind
Haha oh!
I do now remember that i've heard that Word only in TV News about some special Cases and bad Jokes about Priests.
Jep, in romance Languages it is still just "to annoy".
One Word that triggers me hard every Time is eventually.
In englisch it has the Meanin that something is granted for sure.
In every other Language it is a nicer Word for maybe, so right the Opposit
Such Words are called False Friends^^
And no, i haven't seen your post of some kind of Shaming.
It was normally communicated from your Site and i think it is even quite funny to think about it
My " false friends" are coming in every Time i change rapidly from one Language to another.
Would be better if i restart my Brain and its Operation System before i start chatting.
@Luminous117 Makes me wonder if you even read the tweets because they dont even come across whiny
I guess anything negative said about a company = whiny now does it xD
Hate doesn't even begin to describe my feelings towards this shameful cash-grab targeted to a market that is populated by todlers.
I was going to buy some Nintendo games and vouchers for some friends this Christmas. And this one move has just resulted in Sony getting my Xmas money for my friends.
I do not plan on sustaining a platform that treats me as milking cattle.
Bonus note: I was debating the benefits of modding my Switch, now it's a definite do in 2021.
Some people need to find something useful to do with their lives.
Have they fixed this yet?
Not really feeling like letting my system update until this atrocity has been dealt with.
The problem with NSO was never that its icon was too small. Wrong solution, guys.
This is the first time I wish I hadn't updated. A: this icon is an atrocity, and that is most likely intentional. B: I need none of the new features.
@impurekind na. I feel nothing towards people frustrated by red icon in electronic device interface. If only they could be as frustrated about the political, environmental and social injustice. Period.
@Friscobay Oh God--you're one of those.
Where's that rolling eyes emoticon....
I swear you can't satisfy nintendo fans. Just suck it up you aren't spending hours upon hours in a day looking at the switch home menu. I dont like it either but im not getting my panties in a knot over it.
@impurekind so emotional. Rolling eyes emoji and “one of those” are your best arguments so far. Very 2020 of you.
@Friscobay What???
Dang. I wonder what we're gonna do
I thought this was gonna be a meme but wow, people are genuinely upset about this.
It's pretty funny how people make a small thing into something huge. Instead of ignoring the little menu button people go OCD over it instead.
