Original article [Thu 4th Nov, 2021 02:00 GMT]: Nintendo has rolled out its final major update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons ahead of schedule. Instead of November 5th - it's out now, so get downloading!
While you'll be able to access all of the content in the free content in the Version 2.0.0 update, it seems the DLC component (Happy Home Paradise) hasn't gone live just yet.
To manually update your copy of Animal Crossing (if automatic downloads haven't already downloaded the patch), hold the '+' button when the game icon is highlighted, and navigate to the software update section to begin the download.
The Happy Home Designer DLC can be purchased separately for $24.99USD / €24.99 / £22.49 as is also available as part of the Switch Online's 'Expansion Pack' tier. Here's a sample of what you can expect:

Wait it's out already?
@OnlyItsMeReid Yes. My kids are already playing 2.0 right now instead of homework. lol
My GF is gonna play it for another 300 hrs now! xD
OMG!!! I'm downloading right now 😁😁😁😁 Imma have to call in sick to work tomorrow 😜
It’s two days early?! 😱😱
Just got the game, looks like I picked the right time. Having a blast so far. Going to go ahead and get the DLC as well. What a wholesome game
Isn't this a day early? I'm not complaining, just curious.
Oh heck yes.
Can’t wait to get my gyroid on!
Wait, is it already out ?! 😲
I can't access Happy Home Paradise, yet. Maybe that's dropping Friday?
At least my museum will be done tomorrow 😂
what a surprise! i wonder if this was an accident, everyone seems to have to manually update to it themselves
My game is still showing version 1.11.1.
Automatic update is on...any ideas??
Edit: Ok, found out about manual updating, lol.
@k8sMum Press + on Animal Crossing on the home screen, go to Software Update then click Via the Internet. That should work
@Kirbo100
Thanks! I saw @boxyguy's comment and googled. I never knew it was a thing, lol.
Yee haa runs to the switch👍😂😂
Wow, 24 hours early. Sweet! I booted it up today, and couldn't find anything to do besides pick a few hundred weeds, so this is pretty exciting. :3
Can't wait to get home and start playing!!! I know what I'll be doing this afternoon
Well dang, I better go download then.
That's much earlier than I accounted for. My Switch was not fully charged. Lol. I got to play for a while before the battery went low, though. =)
@Jokerwolf The Expensive Pass is an abhorrent thing to do on Nintendo's side, but getting the DLC for $25 is not bad, not bad at all (a whole new game that was sold for $40 on 3DS)
@Jokerwolf
The not cool thing was your comment.
@ares9090 That's what I'm saying just buy it straight up. Nintendo life doesn't have to suck up to Nintendo so hard.
@Anti-Matter The expansion pass doesn't hold value in it's current state to the vast majority of people. Especially when free emulators do it better than Nintendo. Looking at the all stars release and seeing that they have already put a lot more effort in is the biggest slot in the face.
@Jokerwolf majority of consumers don’t touch free emulators so it’s a moot point to just say “just place it on PC emulation!”. Most people like to play games legitimately on official platforms
@Jokerwolf
I don't care with your Blah Blah Blah about emulator.
It's surprising that the update would release so early since it was supposed to release on Friday.
@Arawn93 I do both and a lot of people do both.
Removed - flaming/arguing
I’m surprised! I feel like this is a mistake. …. A very fortunate one at that.
Can’t wait to try this tomorrow! It’s late here on the west coast of U S of A
Anybody knows the size of the patch? Im out of the house atm with lots of time to kill.
I'll hold out for a physical release with the DLC included... pretty please.
well, that unexpected early release has totally destroyed my sleep schedule tonight XD
If this is the last major update, do they plan to release a new AC game in 2-4 years ? Maybe because of the «switch pro» that will release in 1-3 years with stronger hardware 🤔
WOW, the 2.0 update of Animal Crossing New Horizon is out already, i trough i have to wait until 10 PM to experience it.
Never thought I'd be this upset about a final update, but here we are. I'm happy about what's in the update and blown away with the size of the update and paid expansion, but new horizons was my life last year during lockdown and pandemic and I still adore it and it was my GOTY 2020. The end of support for the game is heartbreaking.
Awesome! Will download it right now. Curious what gyroids I'll encounter
@ChromaticDracula I don't think so, this is a way to spread the download update and not have server issues tomorrow when everyone wants to download the DLC.
There's new nook points items...
I just can't wrap my head around this game at all and how it is actually fun. One new item is going to a place to drink coffee with other players. Not sure how that is fun. This game sounds about as fun as Lawnmower Simulator.
Does anyone know, do you have to be the Resident Representative to add new features (Brewster's, Harv's island, etc.)?
Welp time to raze my flower garden to make room for crops. Thank you expansion pack!
-cries in no Mii Mask inclusion- 😭
@DennisNOR problaby the next mainline Animal Crossing is already on the planning stages of development(to be released on Switch sucessor).
@Clamango I'm lucky that this update dropped during my requested days off! I can save my callouts for when SMTV releases. 😂
@IronMan30 It still seems to be adhering to the scheduled release day! I've got it preloaded but not activated as of yet.
@BOctober25 its a game you can get into an addicting routine into. decorating your house/island can take hours or even days. tons of collectables, varied character designs and dialogue, a community of sharing items and designing art patterns with irl players, ect. its not the kind of game for everyone, but once it hooks you it can be one of the most personal gaming experiences out there. people can have diff stories or memories for even the same NPCs, no 2 people have the same mindset building their island. and under a cuter art style and limited set of controls and options, its a lot more digestible and easy to jump into compared to something like the sims
excuse the text, cause even as a fan of AC since 2014 its not the easiest game to explain why its fun either lol
Just finished downloading.
My Birthday today, so this is an awesome welcome surprise, did not think any of this would go live until tomorrow.
My daughter just cried while listening to Kapp'n singing on his boat! 😂😍
@johnvboy Happy Birthday! Enjoy your day!
So, a month before the release of New Horizons, I took a break from gaming media to stay away from spoilers, bad attitudes etc.
I am not sure if I am doing that now, but I may be too busy on my island to care anyway!
Happy gaming AC fans!
@dugan,
Thank you.
So, is it already official update version 2.0.0. now ?
Yay...!
I bought Happy Home Paradise yesterday, with a $20 eShop card, $3 discount from Gold Coins, and about $2.50. I anticipated the update, so I moved my house to a beach, and used where it used to be as garden space, next to the pumpkins. By all accounts, if I move places, and decorate some empty spots, I'll have a 5-Star island in no time.
Last update? Really? They could do so much more.
@johnvboy happy birthday!
@HarvestGoddess yeah you´re right. But Nintendo has dropped the Game. With Update to V2, it´s come to an End. Very very sad......
@CasualNintendonite yeah, same. I preloaded it because I felt like the eShop may be a mess on Friday. Anyway, it does seem to be sticking to it and that's fine. I think they released 2.0 early on purpose because of renovation time for the museum (I don't time travel, not that I have a problem with that, so it's going to be done by tomorrow for me).
Also, happy birthday @johnvboy! Mine is on the 1st. November birthdays, ftw.
I like how people are potentially jumping the gun when it was said this will be the last “major” update.
Nobody said anything about it being the last update full-stop.
Nooo early shift screwed me! I was in bed before the update dropped and am reading this on the bus. Work wifi is borderline unusable and this update is 3 gigs, so I'll have to wait until I get home to update...
@HarvestGoddess I hear ya, these would all be nice especially the observatory again. I do believe they have added some new villagers with this update. Hey could be wrong but i thought some new ones were spotted in the trailer for this.
@IronMan30 I have the same suspicions...This early release will let people get set-up events out of the way. I'm not a time traveler so the fact I'm allowed to get the ball rolling a day early is appreciated.
It’s a shame this is the final update, I was super excited that they were finally adding some substantial new stuff to the game and then they stop it 🙁 at least the new update looks great especially the happy home paradise part
@WeltraumDreamer,
Thank you, just on the update now, and sailing with Kapp'n was so good, took me right back.
@HarvestGoddess
All the things you stated would,, indeed, be great. I too wish we could have at least 15 villagers and the observatory.
It was around midnite when I got it installed so I only played enough to get Isabelle's info. Went back to my house and there was a knock at the door: Phil popped in for a visit! It was cool. Then I, irl, went to bed. My day is open and gonna be consumed by AC.
Enjoy, everyone!
Im not sure these count as spoilers, my bad if they do but; as a time traveler and not afraid to admit it, this update is great to me. However I feel it's disappointing in some very anticipated aspects.
Like, come on man, 1 kap'n trip per day? 1 shop at harv's island donation per day? I feel bad for people who play this by real time. It adds on to the already massive limitations this game provides, and NH is a design game, it doesn't feel necessary to have so many limitations. On a further note, AC is a single player game... they kind of treat it like a mobile game with how many limitations there are, it's pointless IMO. Anyways, that aside the update is amazing.
@johnvboy happy birthday! Have a good’n!
@Neckcrane,
Thank you.
@Austin0404,
It's a real time simulation where patience is a virtue, not in any rush to unlock all the new stuff, it comes when it's ready.
Can understand your points though, if you want stuff quicker.
@DennisNOR Switch 2 will undoubtedly be out by 2023 so expect it on nextgen.
@Austin0404 Not many play it real time
@Jokerwolf Time traveling is a legitimate way to play if you want- I did it when I was working second shift- but I’d still say the majority of people are most likely playing in real time.
@TryToBeHopeful
I'm the island representative in my family and my son was playing this morning and already donated money to Harv's island and did a bunch of the other new stuff. He said the Roost wasn't there yet but I doubt he even tried talking with Blathers. I haven't played yet myself so I can't confirm if the Island representative has to get the Roost up and running but it seems like everything else was good to go.
@StardusterEX Probably not after the 1st couple of months, or when they start missing events unavoidably due to life.
@StardusterEX There's no doubt most people play in real time.Most people wouldn't have the knowledge or inclination to keep changing their clocks.
@gokev13 Yup, my wife played first, she's the representative. She spoke to Blathers and got Brewster's pic. Then I logged in and talked to blathers and he didn't mention the cafe, then I went to a capp'n island and brewster was not there. Harv's island worked fine, and then she logged back in and Brewster was at the capp'n island. I also, unsurprisingly, was not able to buy that builder's license that lets you build more bridges / inclines.
@CasualNintendonite presumably the roost won't come until Saturday at the earliest, though (for us law-abiders).
@TryToBeHopeful I found Brewster and talked to Blathers...It seems like the earliest is Saturday for The Roost to appear. As the museum will close down tomorrow, then reopen the day after it closes. I have other things to do while waiting, so it's not an issue. I have to get those shops opened on Harv's Island. One shop funded per day is annoying, but I expected convenience to be paid for with waiting.
The update is good enough, could have been better for a last major update though. The only paid Dlc being released is basically happy home designer and that's not my thing.
They released it for my birthday and thank you Nintendo for that 😇
What pisses me off about this update is that you can't get the cafe unless you are the resident representitive, and I am not it, but I am the only person on my switch who still plays the game so I am constantly switching accounts
@OnlyItsMeReid Wouldn't it be better to just start a new Island then?
@HarvestGoddess Ahhh perchance to dream……but I have a gut feeling they’ll save features like these for the new game on a future new system…!
"When dreaming, it’s now possible to search for a destination by island name."
Haven't gone to the Dream Realm in 2.0 yet, and I already love this <3
@Austin0404 The limitations are so that people pace themselves better. For example, imagine if you could buy all the art that you want from Redd instead of people actually discovering new stuff each day. Once you get every shop, you pretty much can access them anytime you want so it's just a week of people choosing one and sharing information and hints which is part of the enjoyment of the gaming community. As for Kapp'n it's pretty much the same as my example as these islands are a great way to get a lot of the new stuff as well as bells and other goodies. Many players have hundreds of thousands of Nook Miles so they could go as much as they want and this content wouldn't last.
As you said, this game isn't a competition so there's no point in rushing things. And, although I can understand time traveling and that not everyone can play daily, it's part of the game's structure. That's why we have time travel as an option, but there's no reason to change the main game as it's not what it intends to do.
Sure, there's people trying to do everything as fast as possible, but for many of us this is a game for slow progression and that helps with it's longevity and relevance.
While I can understand your comparison with mobile gaming, I'd say there's a big difference as this game doesn't use pacing to get money from it's players. It also doesn't depend on "energy" or whatever currency to keep on playing, it just requires a bit of patience and offers several other things to do while something is ready. It also doesn't have the competitive nature of said games which is what makes them have bad reputation as pay to win experiences.
Animal Crossing may not be the most respectful game with a person's time, but it also doesn't really demand anything from the player and it does that so that people don't play it running like other games as it's supposed to be a relaxing experience. Just like every other game, that's not for everyone but it certainly works well for lots of people.
@Clamango same here loooool
Turnip tracker in the nook app (on my iphone) seems to think I'm time travelling. WHY!?
@BOctober25 it's not a game for everyone, it has a similar appeal to players who enjoy mine craft or the sims where you can pick it up here and there and just enjoy a very casual laid back experience and make your own fun, something alot of older games used to encourage you to do which is the entire appeal of this series. It's a game about slow achievement, though you can 'Time Travel' and rush through it if you prefer, though you'll get burn out pretty fast if you do.
@iZen it is, but don't they also make the splatoon games? The same team I mean.
I don‘t know. But I hope for an new Animal Crossing in the Future 🙏
I think I'm finally ready to retire my NL town for good now.
2 fairly small things that I wanted in NH was villagers visiting your house and the ability to get a "log cabin" look outside for your own....was pleasantly surprised to see both yesterday.
While I think Nintendo has dropped the ball on things more often than not lately, and while most of this should have been included from the start (or with previous updates), have to say I'm quite happy with it and the DLC.
There was a way to force a trash pond and I missed it?
Boy... there goes my chance at completing the trash DIY collection easily... gotta continue looking for that boot I'm missing.
You guys i need help!! I downloaded the update 20 minutes ago. i even double checked that is was up to date. i started the game and explored the new features. there are no island ordinances, no customizing my house shape, nothing on harvs island, no kappn, no new nook miles items, no cooking items. i looked at a guide for how to get the cafe and it said i had to talk to blathers. i talked to him and it was just normal. so no cafe either. my nooks cranny is currently in construction for the full building, does that have anything to do with it? how do i get the full update? help!!!
@jordyn340 You have to have at least a 3 star island and there's also other requisites to access the new content, like for example having stuff in the museum (I think at least one of each category) and I might have even seen that you need K.K ublocked too.
