Nintendo has released a major Switch update, bumping the system's firmware up to version 11.0.0.
A Nintendo Switch Online icon has been added to the HOME Menu, you can now transfer screenshots to mobile devices and PC, there's the ability to choose which game to download first if you have multiple downloads pending, there's additional language support and much more.
Several issues have also been fixed, and of course, the overall usability and stability of the system has been improved. Below are the full patch notes, courtesy of the official Nintendo support page:
Ver. 11.0.0 (Released November 30, 2020)
Nintendo Switch Online was added to the HOME Menu.
- Access all Nintendo Switch Online services, from getting the latest information to checking your membership status. *This feature is not available in some countries/regions.
A new feature that automatically downloads backed up save data was added to the Save Data Cloud.
- When using software with the same Nintendo Account linked to multiple systems, save data backed up from one console will automatically be downloaded to your other system(s).
*To use this feature, it must be enabled under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
*Save data will not be downloaded automatically unless save data for that software exists on the console. The first time only, users must download the save data manually.
*A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the Save Data Cloud service.
A new Trending feature was added to the User Page.
- Users can check what software their friends are playing or have started playing recently.
Information will not be displayed for friends who have their online status set to display to no one.
Users can now transfer screenshots and videos from Album to their smart devices.
- Users can wirelessly connect their smart devices to Nintendo Switch to transfer the screenshots and videos saved within their Album.
- For screenshots, users can transfer a maximum of 10 screenshots and 1 video capture at once.
*To connect, users must use their smart device to scan the QR Code displayed on the Nintendo Switch screen.
For more information, please refer to the Nintendo Support website.
*“QR Code” is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.
A new Copy to a Computer via USB Connection feature was added under System Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos.
- Users can use a USB cable to connect Nintendo Switch to their computers to copy the screenshots and videos saved under Album.
* A USB charging cable [model HAC-010] or a USB-IF certified USB cable that supports data transfer is required to connect to a computer.
For more information, please refer to the Nintendo Support website.
* Connection via the Nintendo Switch dock is not supported. Please connect the Nintendo Switch system directly to the computer.
Users can now select what download to prioritize when there are multiple downloads in progress.
- When there are multiple software, update data, or downloadable content downloads in progress, users can now select which they want to download first.
- You can set this under Download Options by selecting the icon for the software you want to download first on the HOME Menu.
User icons were added.
- 12 user icons that commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series were added.
Users can now name preset button mappings with the Change Button Mapping feature.
Brazilian Portuguese was added as a supported language.

Wow, so they actually added some features. At this rate, maybe we'll have folders in five years or so!
Obligatory comment about no folders or organization features
Finally I can play in Brazilian Portuguese.
😏
In all seriousness though, this is a good update. Especially the save updates syncing since I have a Switch and Switch Lite.
So many additions, but I doubt they'll affect my Switch experience.
-But new User Icons are always appreciated
Finally brazilian portuguese! Also, NL (understandably) didn't report on it, but Nintendo confirmed that the eshop is coming to the Switch in Brazil! No need for external websites anymore. I don't know about other south american countries that have the same lame site as well, worth checking it out!
Next Gen update right here...
Will the Mario anniversary icons also disappear after the 31st of March, 2021?
I use a regular switch and a lite together so the automatic backup downloads are great!
All of these new features are great! Let's be honest though, would this have been a GOOD system update without usability and stability improvements? No, I don't think it would be.
That Online app would have been perfect for showing play times and comparing them with friends. C’est la vie.
Came straight to the comments just to read the stability jokes only to find that I have to go back and read what they've updated
When are we getting Wallpaper!?
"Users can wirelessly connect their smart devices to Nintendo Switch to transfer the screenshots and videos saved within their Album"
Game changer.
Fiiiinally a way to export photos. Easily my biggest annoyance with the system.
Still no way for us to make our own themes and folders. It's been 3 and a half year Nintendo.
@Whatdidyousay : Neigh-ry a stability pun around these parts, I'm afraid, but, hay, it's a good source of nutrition.
sobbing in excitement due to the Brazilian Portuguese support sorry Portugal, I like you and all but your words for modern things are WEIRD.
Also, a proper eShop for Brazil! With more than 30 or so titles! The ability to aend photos to phones, so I can actually crop them before posting! I love all of it, yes!
Wow this is an update that is worth it. Made it easier. Also nice icons
I literally just delete all my screenshots and videos because I go sick of not being able to transfer them....oh well.
Is it bad that expected the icons to be gone after March 31st? Also there's not A SINGLE NEW LUIGI ICON WHYYYY???????????????
@SwitchVogel Who knows, maybe 4 and 3/4 years if we're lucky!
D-d-did we reach the peak of stability? Is this our reward for getting literally nothing for years?
The zelda botw logo also changed, at least in my console. Kinda aleatory.
But i like the update, specially finally being able to send my screenshots directly to my phone.
@Tulio517 The site and on Switch Eshop for Brazil have been there for a long while, if you are Brazilian they also have the best prices.
Being able to transfer screenshots and the videos is really awesome, the built-in Twitter client is pretty limited and is still stuck using the old character limit so being able to just send stuff to my phone will be much better.
Wow, an update that actually does something. Not gonna lie, the ability to save photos/vids to my phone is very cool with all the funny things my sister and i capture in animal crossing.
I know a lot of people wants folders, and so do I. But new theme would be really nice!
Chunky update with some nice additions. Well done Nintendo. NES/SNES updates this month too perchance?
Being able to name the button mapping profiles is very handy.
Great wee update.
@Silly_G Hopefully not-
@Sva Really? Did the icon actually change?
Wow, what's this!? An actually cool update!?
@Silly_G It doesn't even change the profile picture once March 31st ends, it just makes it blank.
Damn that's actually a decent update, especially the extra connectivity for getting screenshots off the console. Almost makes me feel bad for still wanting folders so I can bung all them free qubic games into one!
I like the NSO hub... Nothing major, but still an improvement.
I see a lot of people wishing for themes and folders for the Switch, for a frame of reference the 3DS got themes with Ver. 9.0.0-20U which released October 6th 2014. So it's a little over 3 years into the 3DS's life that it got that feature. The 3DS got folders with Ver. 4.0.0-7U which released April 24th 2012. The Switch might get themes soon if that's anything to go by, this is just speculation on my part so it's not definitive information. (Dates used were for the U.S.)
@ok1 Yep, it used to be based on the European box art and now it is based on the American/Japanese one.
The 3DS' UI is still the best by far (and most stable too)!
Nintendo forgot the most important new added feature, the switch now doubles as a paperweight when you're not playing it.
I wonder how does the transfer of screenshots from Switch to other smart devices works.. is it by bluetooth or through other means..
Wish they can add support and eshop for South East Asian region too!
People are ragging on it, but I'm only seeing the future.
NSO is about to be a whole lot better judging by the way it's organized.
Finally, an update that actually has something useful. Yeah, still no folders or themes, but...
🦀 WE 👏CAN 👏 FINALLY 👏 SEND 👏 SCREENSHOTS 👏 TO 👏 OTHER 👏 DEVICES! 🦀
@Charinzardon there was a website in a browser, not a proper eShop like the 3DS and WiiU have. Starting December 7th you can buy directly from your system. This wasn't possible before, you needed a web browser in a phone or computer to buy digital games.
Well, that's progress I guess.
we did it, system stability is no more
@Sun_wukong has to be via WiFi. Bluetooth wouldn't need a QR code (which it requires you scan with your mobile device).
@Sva Huh, so no changes to America right? Although, this probably isn´t related to the update
Careful! This update ruined my switch, there is no volume now when in handheld mode even when connecting headphones. Volume only works in tv mode after the update
@Moonlessky Still works fine for me.
@ok1 It probably was because the update turned my switch to Brazilian Portuguese, it was on European Portuguese before.
Just in time too😆. But hmm the whole personal theme thing needs to be a thing. I came from ps4 pc and xbox. They all had personalization. But keep dreaming 🙄😆.
@Moonlessky Have you tried a full shutdown? (hold power button for 10+ seconds) If not it may help. I discovered anytime i changed sd cards I would get issues even if I turned off my switch. Only a full shutdown would resolve the issue.
stability
Oh, whew, good, I was afraid it was going to be unstable!
@Chowdaire can you do me a favor? I noticed after the update the tv settings on my switch are available even in handheld mode. Im guessing my switch thinks its connected to the dock, can you check if those settings are available on your switch undocked as well?
@Chowdaire full shutdown didn't work
Nice! But still no folders.........
Maybe now Nintendo will come massage my Brazilian crank
Save auto download is going to be very nice.
I'm glad that Nintendo keeps focuses on adding features that are actually useful in these system updates rather than pointless stuff like themes and folders. Being able to send screenshots to my phone in particular is great.
@Doofenshmirtz Who's Luigi?
Playing the original Paper Mario, and this one bird boss... can I really just skip him by telling him Luigi, and he won't care to fight? (or is he going to come back later and be mad I tried to pull a fast one on him)
I don't know, because I fought him anyways.
Still no folders 🤦♂️
Not bad. Although the new icon for online services doesnt fit in with all the other ones.
@Moonlessky ...uh-oh. We’ve run out of stability updates, so now Nintendo’s sending out INstability updates!
Try powering off your console again, and leave it off for a little while longer.
Just a matter of time when we get folders, maybe
Brazilian portuguese, finally!
@dux they don't leave Portuguese (Portugal) support. If you choose america region, it'll be PT-BR, if you choose Europe region it'll be PT-PT. If you're missing "consola", "alcunha" or "ecrã" you can see it again 😅
Cool. Nothing I'm too excited about but at least this is an actual update.
Still more Mario icons? Where are Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and Xenoblade!? They are static images dude! How hard could it be?
Now if they would create a PC system transfer without having to use the Cloud when one gets another Switch to use while selling the old one.
This was a big one! Not even gonna make a stability joke.
Nice little update
And now everyone trying to update is crashing the server, and you have to update to check on Cyber-Monday deals. Not the best timing to release a major update.
@Moonlessky Hmm. That is weird. Sorry to hear that didn't work and also confused to hear that your switch thinks its docked when it isn't. Well, this sounds like a job for the professionals or at the very least other internet peoples.
None of this crap matters without folders.
Auto synch of cloud saves between consoles is a huge deal for me.
But the red button on the homescreen drives me already mad.
Finally!
NOW WHERE'S MY ***** FOLDERS, NINTENDO.
This is exciting. The Nintendo Online system's functionality seems to be on it's way! I like the 'My Stuff' folder, it seems to be hinting at a possible addition of achievements or something similar in the future.
I'd say Netflix is a bigger deal than folders. Why hide away the already nice menu icons for the games you have? I just want to stream stuff on my Switch, and be able to maybe message/invite friends to games.
More stability! Thanks!
@Ronwantread "Several issues were fixed, and usability and stability were improved." Stability is listed at the bottom of the update notes. It graces our systems still.
@smh I'm sure it's up to Netflix to bring their service to the Switch not Nintendo. Most people want the folders so they can organize their games, one folder for racing games, another for RPGs etc. Once you get a lot of games it can be hard to find the one you want quickly.
@RCGamer yeah which is the right way to do it, they shouldn't erase the other version to support a new one.
Actually, tying the type of Portuguese to the continent is quite clever of them, are any other languages similarly separated like that? English and French, possibly? Spanish? I get so used to seeing "Português (Brasil)" and "Português (Europeu)" always that a more elegant solution like this actually stands out
I just installed the new update 20 minutes ago, and I think besides all of the QOL improvements, I love the new icons the best! Some of them are very eye catching, especially since my love of Mario is going strong lately. I also think that the one update I am truly waiting for besides folders is custom color choices for the theme of our Nintendo Switch backgrounds. Only being able to choose between black and white is so incredibly limiting.
These are features I would 100% choose over system slowing folders or music. Thanks Nintendo.
Especially being able to auto update save games, and the option to transfer screenshots and screen recordings to your mobile or PC without having to remove the microSD card are VERY welcome!
What the Switch needs:
-A VC library to the standard of the Wii, Wii U and 3DS
-Home menu customization to the standard of the 3DS
-Internet Browser, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, iPlayer (just like the Wii) and Disney+
-Twitch streaming integration that uses the Switch App as the camera (this isn't too much to ask because Twitch streaming is a standard across other consoles)
What the Switch gets
-An NSO hub
-Showing what your friends are playing
Y I K E S
I'm happy for options to be able to put videos and pictures on my phone so I can share them with who I want when I want. Not just a broad twitter/Facebook post for all to see.
I think this’ll mean a direct is imminent.
Nintendo did good this time
@SwitchVogel how would be this utilities?
It wasn’t very intuitive for the 3DS.
I would welcome a quick search... it is 2020. 😝
@Scrubicius Man, that would definately make life easier!
@Scrubicius Also an excellent idea! Really though, I don't understand how they've gotten nearly four years into the Switch and the UI is still this barebones. I totally get the focus on making it lightweight and fast (less than 200kb truly is impressive), but would a few lines of code allowing you to search your library really move the needle at all? Why did it take until the last month of 2020 for them to finally let us prioritize downloads!?
Stoked about being able to transfer my screenshots to my phone or pc...and just to join in ...rabble rabble.. no folders or themes ...rabble rabble
@BenAV In what world are folders pointless? It's literally organization features to keep the library less cluttered and more usable.
@Friendly I think there will be one in January. A mini Direct, or a full one if they are going to announce a Switch Pro.
I’ve been meaning to clear up space by transferring all my screenshots to my laptop. Turns out I couldn’t have - but now can - but will I?
So no more stability? I am frankly disappointed :/
@PoeTheLizard With a large library of games, it's easiest to find what you're looking for if they're just sorted alphabetically. I think folders would make it look messier and ultimately just make it harder to find things. I do hope they continue to improve the UI and experience over time but folders would be right down the bottom of the list for me.
Interesting features, I think the Brazilian Portuguese is the big one. It's a signal that Nintendo is taking more markets seriously. Eastern European languages when?
All this and still no themes or folders?
@smh what do you mean with "my stuff folder"?
I dunno about this, I think what we really needed was a nice stability update...
The pictures and videos transfer thing will be helpful. I mean, not having to remove the microSD card every time and knowing exactly what files you transfer is a welcome addition.
About what people is playing, well, you can see it already, maybe not so easily as with the new feature, but it's not been very useful to me: whenever I say something about the games people play they usually react as if I was spying on them instead of finding a way to start a conversation LOL
The new connectivity and the NSO roundup can come in handy, but the "download first" option is the most welcome, especially since I may actually end up with a new Switch today. Besides, as someone who likes to have his "all software" section literal, I fearfully suspect the account transfer will NOT include the archived game icons and thus leave me briefly starting several hundred downloads from eShop profile just to bring all this stuff back to home menu instead.🙀😅
And not gonna lie, I sure wish this update had introduced something like "transfer memory card signatures" and spare me gradually redownloading some 500 Gb of the currently downloaded items to begin with. Warframe, Observer, BotW and FEW and their DLCs, two Xenoblades, Skyrim, TMS... yikes, and that's just some of the biggest stuff. But "this is the way"© [back to faster loading times and no constant gambling with potential software/download crashes], I suppose.
And to bitch about something (I don't care enough for themes and folders, after all)... I've kinda given up on expecting Xenoblade icons, but a new Super Mario anniversary update, during the same period as Galaxy's limited anniversary-tied run, and STILL no Rosalina icon???!!!111 😤😆
It sounds like this makes having multiple switches a viable option?
I hit the screen shot limits ages ago so that's a great update for me.
Seriously though, without mentioning that F word again, having to scroll through every icon to find that cool indie game I think I downloaded a year ago is really tiresome and shouldn't have been a thing even in 2017.
So not neflix or other media apps ha? Why Nintendo? Why?
The sending screenshots to my phone worked the first couple of times, but now doesn't work at all.
After I scan the second code, the link is Not Found.
Frustrating.
@smh There already is an invite-system, for games that supports it
@JokerCK
Nintendo don't want to pay for it. For some reason, Netflix wants payment from the console makers to add their app on the system, which is a bit of a strange business concept.
" you can now transfer screenshots to mobile devices and PC" COOL
I'm not sure how much this will enhance my Switch experience but it's a nice update. New icons are always appreciated. I would love it if they put some sonic the hedgehog icons on the list. I know it's not Nintendo's IP but I would love it if they did.
Everybody gangsta until they see the Nintendo Switch Online icon.
Has anyone tried to copy pictures/ videos to the Switch via PC? I’m just wondering if now that the functionality has been implemented if we can also reverse the process (legitimately) and use the Switch as a media player?
Some welcome changes indeed. Enough that I'll dump my "Folders and Themes!" sign back into storage anyway.
For now.
@JohnnyC That was actually my first thought. Hoping for some more nes/snes games this month.
@Bearzilla823 Looks promising. Just turned on the Switch to update the firmware and it auto-updated the NES app too. I only used it a couple of days ago so this is a new update, hopefully laying the ground for more games.
For me, the real story about this firmware update is that following the update, and the Nintendo Switch Online stuff becoming centralised via the hub icon, it also means that users with a UK Nintendo Switch Online membership are no longer able to access the different US and Japanese NES/SNES titles in the respective apps as before if they created a US or Japanese user account on the same Switch.
All these quality of life improvements but we still cannot use the all software layout as default still 🙄🙄🙄
Priorities and all that smh
🎵All I want for Christmas is a theme for my switch...🎵
@AC-Rob Basically Nintendo's "One Switch Per Person"-idea instead of a "family"-Switch. For instance this makes it easier to have a "personal" Switch lite and a "family" Switch docked to the TV.
@superderper
Well to be fair, why worry about an update that affects so few people? 😉 The fact of the matter is that even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic where people are losing their jobs, pennies are being pinched and everything else, they've still been killing it. Clearly tons of people are playing games, so no need to cater an update for so few of you lol
Finally a way to send screenshots to your phone!
Just played borderlands some more, but the gyro aim no longer works... The Switch has become TOO stable.
OH MY GOD YES!!! NOW I CAN FINALLY USE VIDEO CLIPS AND PHOTOS FROM MY SWITCH ON MY PHONE!!! This is amazing!
The other updates are awesome too! I’m particularily excited about... ALL OF THEM!
Now we just need folders and backgrounds and my life is complete!
@Tourtus Just drawing lines in the sand. I agree, I would love folders too. I'm just willing to trade one thing I want for the other. The Switch is such a baffling console. So trailblazing in some aspects, so elementary and 'not any different than 2004' in other aspects, specifically it's apps.
@RasandeRose Is that true? It's baffling because the 3DS and Wii U had Netflix. Could it possibly be due to the fact that Nintendo wanted offline streaming, eg. downloads, and that's what Netflix wanted money for as creating an infrastructure for that costs extra money. Maybe Nintendo wanted to work on their own infrastructure before making any such deal. And if it costs money for users to download stuff on Netflix, collecting the subscription fee could be just what Nintendo needs to close that deal. In all honesty, I think Nintendo just wants to milk people's interests in games before they put Netflix on the Switch.
@Yanina I have to correct myself, I mean the little section on the profile section on the new NSO app on the home screen called 'Your Stuff'. Right now, it just includes the user's cloud saves but has room for more rectangle shaped additions. I suspect that Nintendo might be starting their own achievement system! If not, other online stuff will be put in the 'Your Stuff' category IMO. Hope that clears up what I was thinking.
@RasandeRose No games support it, funnily enough!
@smh
Thats what I heard, but its years ago so I wont take poison on it. But it fits, as Nintendo hasn't tried to oppose streaming services, several US and Japan-exclusive services exists. The reason a system like Wii U had Netflix could very well be that Nintendo paid Netflix to get their service up and running on the system, as Nintendo early on tried to make the Wii U as more of a TV-multimedia system with TVii and such stuff, so it would be natural that they would be ready to pay for the market leading streaming service. With Switch, they are obviously not interested in multimedia any more, so streaming services is a hit or miss for them. It will be there the day Netflix are ready to put it on there and cover the costs in doing so.
Ofc. No one of us deadly really knows how Netflix conduct their business towards the Console manufacturers, but with their business-model it wouldn't surprise me if they implements some kind of reversed- licensing model, that is Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo actually pays some kind of royalty towards Netflix to get the app on their system.
@smh
Yepp, and its odd. Switch also supports native voice chat, it just doesn't have a built-in software for it. But there is third party solutions up and running, and I really don't understand why games like Vigor, Zombi Army and such doesn't support it on Switch.
Does anyone know if it’s also possible to send videos from your Switch to a PC or phone? Also, why do I have a feeling that the sending photos to PC thing is going to lead to some sort of vulnerability that leads to hacking/modding the Switch from that one thing? I don’t have a negative view on that sort of thing, but I just have a feeling that it’ll happen.
@dux probably they have the same, at least with English and French. I really appreciated the solution but it could be a bit confusing. Imagine a Brazilian living in Portugal (almost anyone here know someone). They naturally put the region "Europe" and probably should prefer to choose PT-BR if they see the option. This way, unless they know they need to choose "America" they won't have the option. For me it's works fine and elegant, but it's not "newbie friendly"
ok, I'm excited! this is awesome, thanks Nintendo!
(some people in the comments are being ungrateful little kids, bruh, stop complaining, you got it, now your instantly looking for the next, just like a bratty little kid, gets a great toy, only looks for the next.)
@smh ah yeah! Thank you!
The save data would be cool if every big game supported it.
@JohnnyC Here in America they tend to drop new games in the Nes/Snes apps on Wednesdays. Maybe we will be getting something over the next couple of weeks for the holidays. We can only hope and wait.
@RasandeRose maybe because Nintendo think if Switch reach 100 milions consoles sold at the first half of 2021, and i allow Netflix in my most sucefull console yet, i will have to pay half of total Switch current software and hardware sale.
considering this Switch update have some major QOL improvement, give me hope that in version 12.0.0 or in version 13.0.0, Nintendo finaly add the Folders and Themes, we have been asking them since the launch of Switch in march of 2017.
@Kirby_Girl
You always could transfer to pc by way of putting the memory card into one.
@Devlind
While I agree, the only ones that don't are the ones where exploits or hacks could work as a gain, so Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, DBZ world mission. It is a pain but you can transfer the save data to another console then to a new one.
@TheAwesomeBowser you could always do before with twitter and facebook, though videos where more of a hassle as you had to use a downloader to rip. well, for twitter at least. never used it with facebook
I wonder why there are no icons from other Nintendo franchises like Xenoblade or Pokemon...
heres an idea new background for the menu..
