If you want a very brief summary of the current status of Nintendo's finances, they're extremely healthy. When any company posts profits in the billions of dollars, it's a sign of impressive health and long term stability. It's a boom that rather brings to mind the Wii / DS era, albeit Nintendo has now long-since evolved its business into one line of hardware (with iterations, of course). The Switch era has allowed the company to streamline and focus, and you combine that with a bumper year and you have impressive results.
In this article we're going to break down some key takeaways from Nintendo's financial results, but first of all below are links to our initial coverage as the reports were issued.
- Nintendo Switch Sales Surpass Game Boy Advance As Demand Stays High
- Animal Crossing Was The Best Selling Switch Game This Year, Unsurprisingly
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Retains Its Crown In Nintendo Switch Best-Selling Games List
- Illumination Founder Chris Meledandri Set To Join Nintendo Board - Nintendo Life
- Nintendo's Upcoming Release Schedule For 2021 Looks Positive, With Room For More
- Nintendo eShop Growth Continues With Massive Increase To Digital Sales
- Nintendo Reports Major Increases In Profits, But Anticipates A Drop This Year
So, here are some key aspects of Nintendo's financial reports.
Nintendo spent a record amount on R&D (Research and Development)
Over the course of the last financial year Nintendo spent 93.2 billion Yen on research and development expenses, which is north of $850 million. The key thing to note is that this was an increase of 10.8% over the previous year. Senior Analyst at Niko Partners, Daniel Ahmad, shared an informative graph that shows this is also a record for Nintendo; the orange line shows it was actually a drop in percentage of overall revenue, but as it was such an outstanding year for Nintendo this is no surprise.
The assumption that will be made is that a chunk of this will be on the next notable hardware release, though that's rather like saying Nintendo is actively developing Mario projects. What most fans will really care about is the timing for the next system, and that's still at the mercy of rumours and speculation, with 2 years+ of talk around a Switch 'Pro'. There have been reports it's planned for this year, though many of the same sources said a Pro would arrive last year; right now only Nintendo knows, but no doubt a portion of that R&D will have been devoted to new hardware and related projects.
The figure should excite us for other reasons, though. We've seen Nintendo produce some left-field products in recent years, from cardboard-based toy construction to RV cars blended with Mario Kart. Not every new product has been a major success, but Nintendo is continually experimenting with its technology and ideas, so the more it spends on R&D the more likely we are to be surprised each year.
The Mario movie may just be the beginning
Next year, all going to plan, will bring us a fully fledged Mario movie. It's the first full Mario movie since 'that live action flick', and it's going to be a pretty big cultural event in gaming. Nintendo has made noises about "looking into" more animation projects, and though we've seen some excellent promotional animations over the past decade, it does seem likely that Nintendo will aim to make a greater impact in the movie (and perhaps TV) space.
If there was any doubt about Nintendo's interest in this area, a smaller line in the financial results may settle the matter. It was confirmed that Nintendo is nominating Illumination founder Chris Meledandri as an 'Outside Director', which will likely be ratified in June. To be clear, outside directors are typically brought on board to advise and guide on key topics, which Meledandri can certainly offer. Illumination is the company producing the Mario movie, having developed a number of very successful animated movie brands, included the likes of Despicable Me.
Here's what Nintendo's said about the appointment:
Mr. Meledandri, the founder of Illumination Entertainment, has extensive experience as a film producer. We would like to nominate him as a new Outside Director with the expectation that he will appropriately supervise our companyʼs management from an objective perspective, while providing valuable advice to our organization, based on his broad experience and insight gained as a leader in the field of entertainment.
Our current group of Outside Directors consists of experts such as lawyers and accountants, and as members of the Audit and Supervisory Committee, they contribute to enriching the audit and supervisory system of our company through their broad insight into our corporate management. However, Mr. Meledandri is expected to be nominated as an Outside Director who will not serve as a member of the Audit and Supervisory Committee.
It's clear Nintendo is keen to broaden its role in the entertainment industry, and this board-level move is an indication of that. It also highlights that the company is clearly happy with progress on the Mario movie project.
Evergreen titles outperformed new releases
When reflecting on the last financial year, it's possible that - in between gleefully rolling around in mounds of crisp bank notes - Nintendo will reflect on some minor disappointments with new game releases. Now to be clear, the company had a spectacular year in overall software sales, with the grand total (first- and third-party) being 230.88 million units, a huge 36.8% increase on the previous year. That's a lot of Nintendo Switch game sales.
When you look at the Nintendo game sales, however, the power of evergreen releases shines through. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the best-seller, but it had less than two weeks of sales in the last financial year, so it was pretty fresh for these figures. Other newcomers to do well last year were Super Mario 3D All-Stars with a little over 9 million sales, which had a limited-time release that undoubtedly drove demand to a degree, and then Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury reached 5.59 million sales despite only arriving in February.
After that, however, the upper reaches of the list is full of older titles. Ring Fit Adventure certainly enjoyed the benefits of gamers stuck at home and looking to keep fit, and a range of titles no doubt performed well as new Switch owners scooped up highly regarded and visible titles. Familiar brands that also suited the zeitgeist of 2020's unique circumstances sold millions of copies, ranging from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to Super Mario Party.
Other new releases have had mixed fortunes; 3.7 million sales for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a record for the Musou series of games. Sales a little over 3 million for games like Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics and Paper Mario: The Origami King aren't to be sniffed at, but in the context of a whopping year they were outgunned by various veterans on the Switch scene. 1.5 million copies for Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is likely considered solid considering its a more niche IP, though Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit managed just 1.27 million in that list; we'd love to know what Nintendo thought of that internally. While a neat idea and a lot of fun for the right audience with a convenient space to play, it was quite expensive and never going to get close to recreating the buzz of a full Mario Kart game for the system.
Evergreen software sales have always been key to Nintendo consoles and that's true again with Switch, albeit with some incredible numbers in these boom years.
Those are some of our key thoughts and takeaways from the Nintendo financial information so far; let us know what you think in the comments!

Glad they are doing well, maybe we will soon see Metroid Prime on the system!
NINJA APPROVED
All these profits and so little first party titles being released.
As long as the movie production doesn't get in the way of great games, I'm all for a mario movie.
@SuperCharr Yeah but the money they make on merch and licensing would be absolutely insane. The toy sales and licensing could easily fund a Switch Pro development.
@1ofUs No reason it would.
Nintendo needs to put out 1st part titles for sure! There's no reason that they're not pumping them out. And no reason that there's not more games on the Nintendo Switch online service. They could have their entire library on there.
@K1N6AC3 No new Mario Kart in 7 years is a little nuts.
@jakebrake The Nintendo online thing is infuriating. People pirated the games on roms because there was zero other options. Then Nintendo shut all that down and Nintendo Online is now just a platform for a few good games and 80% games no one has ever heard of.
[record sales, record profits]
Nintendo: "here's 3 NES ROMs for Nintendo Online"
Nintendo could do so much to take on the likes of MS and Sony (not saying they're not already). Imagine this... They have Switch, Switch lite and a Switch Pro. The Pro still has all the same games but more games geared towards the "hardcore" fans. Then you beef up the online capabilities with things like voice chat, party chat, etc. THEN you create a monthly subscription to the "NintendoVault" (aka Gamepass but only for Nintendo titles) where you can play a variety of older games that change monthly. This is the world I one day want to live in...
@pepepopo insane twist: GB/ GBA online announced, Mother 3 included
Iwata warned us about what would happen if Nintendo went down this road(though he was more or less talking about going into the mobile market) and it seems he was right.
Though they seem to have made a fortune in recent years by expanding their business practices into other media , they seem to have forgotten what originally brought them that fortune in the first place, becoming more corporate as years pass.
I wouldn't consider Nintendos 2020 to be spectacular but more lacklustre
Just dawned on me E3 is actually pretty damn close (lockdowns have messed with my sense of time in the world).
Something to look forward to where I hope Nintendo has a few great surprises up its sleeve!
@SeantheDon29 What did Iwata say?
I'm worried Nintendo will spread itself too thinly by moving further into other forms of entertainment. 😕 Unless they're going to massively expand.
Cool?...Does it mean I can get a console that can at least maintain 60 fps? Does this mean I can get games that aren't mario, link, and pokemon?
@AndyC_MK I've bought most Nintendo IPs, 3rd Party and even indies. I am running out of space on my 512GB. I still don't have anything I would like to play. I guess gaming isn't for me anymore unless its games that I want from nintendo. Like Zelda, metroid, bayonetta and the new DMC.
Well deserved, Nintendo. Here's to the next year (omg I can't wait for E3!)
@AndyC_MK If you have nothing good to say, then say nothing at all!
NINJA APPROVED
@AndyC_MK I mean did you see the resolution on No Mores Heroes 3. Looked like burry mess and I am a big NMHs fan.
@AndyC_MK I see your point but if you packaged it differently like the PS4 and PS5 you might be able to make it work.
@BloodNinja I've seen you do this on other posts... I think it's pretty funny. Keep doing you!
@TheFullAndy,
Yes I can't believe how quick this year has gone, not long before some more announcements.
@TDRsuperstar2 Thank you! Just having a good time.
@AndyC_MK You’re right! It’s a valid question, and one that I do not have to answer. Have a good day, let’s try to stay on topic!
NINJA APPROVED
@AndyC_MK,
You are looking at this from a core existing Switch owners point of view, and I will admit I agree with you we need some more first party announcements.
But for the potential Switch customer there are a lot of reasons to buy a system, and even though the pandemic has helped sales it's not the only reason, the console has been selling great numbers since launch with no price cut.
Hey Nintendo, how about if you want to do something new and crazy, how about you actually make some new video games? Maybe create some new characters? Or if you want to be lazy on the creative side, how about a new 2D Metroid? New Kid Icarus? A new 3D Mario that isn't just a rerelease? How about a new puzzle game as good as Tetris or Dr. Mario? Oh what's that? You're going to do stuff like theme parks and movies instead? Rerelease the same games for decades? Ok nevermind then.
@NGNYS
Go take a good long look in the mirror and then...........just stay there and stop being weird.
@AndyC_MK
And yet everything I said remains valid. And me whinging? Aren't you the guy who just whined over and over about the "ninja approved" comment in multiple responses? You're a real character man
@AndyC_MK
Didn't you know all the game developers had to stop for a year to build all those rides at the park?!?
I'm surprised that Mario Kart Life moved so many copies considering the close proximity to Christmas and what seemed like product shortages at the time.
@AndyC_MK Yeah. This last year has been nuts for everyone. I think they did very well despite it. Let's hope this next year has less disruption.
@NGNYS Is it wrong to try to question and understand the motives of a BIG CORP? Why not continue to b*tch and moan and if it means they will change their ways. I mean Sony Fanboys lost it when they were going to close the Vita and PS3 store and sony heard and backtracked. I digress because they are CORP and they like money. They will adjust as long as it makes them money. AND I severely doubt NINTENDO pays attention to this anyways. So it like venting and yelling into the void.
@xxx128 The first Animal Crossing movie never left Japan. Hopefully, a 2nd one would.
@AndyC_MK You approached me first, and belittled me over a comment that wasn’t even directed to you. Feel free to add me to the ignore list and move along with your day.
NINJA APPROVED
@AndyC_MK
The pandemic didn't seem to keep them much from the theme park or the movie stuff or continuing the toy lines, so that point has no validity. The fact that they have different teams working on stuff doesn't matter either, since this is about allocation of resources and attention. You really think I believe game developers are building amusement park rides? I guess Konami isn't distracted from making games either since the pachenko teams aren't their game developers. You got issues man.
And I'm a child for voicing my opinion? Ok Mr. "I've got 67 physical games on Switch". How's that for child. Switch came out in 2016. That's 5 years ago. Have you run 67 miles in the last 5 years? Read 67 books? Went on 67 dates? Created 67 of your own projects? You, sir, have a little man complex. And still, my points about new 1st party characters, a new 2D Metroid, a new Kid Icarus, or a new great puzzle game still remain valid.
I can see you're all worked up about this, but you're not some comment section regulator, genius. You're just some weird Nintendo apologist fanboy who can't take criticism.
NINJA APPROVED
@AndyC_MK I can get behind that response. (Thumbs up)
@screechums
lol Did you just steal BloodNinja's "Ninja Approved" line?
@westman98
hahaha solidarity!
@BloodNinja
@AndyC_MK Sounds like you’re just coming in to be combative, for no apparent reason.
@screechums I approve this usage of NINJA APPROVED
Weird, I didn’t directly comment to this person so I’m not sure why he jumped down my throat.
Alright lads/ladies calm down calm down.
@AndyC_MK
Mate your gonna talk yourself into getting a ban, just let it go.
@TheFullAndy
Careful man, this guy's having a conniption fit. You'll get wrapped up in it, too
@screechums
I agree with pretty much everything Andy is saying regarding Nintendo, but there is no need to get worked up with others here and get banned (I know from experience).
@TheFullAndy
That's fine. You can agree or disagree with whatever you want. It doesn't bother me to have different opinions from someone else, or have someone else have different opinions from me. That guy just has no ability to communicate calmly in a disagreement, plus he jumped all over that blood ninja guy.
@screechums
I'm not getting into any of that.
You should probably just leave it too to be fair.
@AndyC_MK
Trust me I am no mod, been on the bad side of one or two though lol
Ignore button is great, and does no harm to the ignorer or the ignored.
I have no problems with theme parks, movies, TV, toys, etc. They know the value of their games and consoles.
And game development is more complex today than ever before. I understand these things take time.
Even without including the Wii U ports (BOTW is a dual release, not a port), the Switch library is so much better than what we had in the Wii U days.
@AndyC_MK
Cheers, also quite rare for me! Must be in a zen mood today lol
@TheFullAndy
Oh I've left it. The last time I responded to that guy was like 30 minutes ago, despite him calling me multiple things (cu*t included) to which I said nothing in return. And then these obvious comments about ignoring me (when he most certainly hasn't). I was just having a bit of fun.
@Tandy255
I remember waiting months for any worthwhile games to show up on Wii U whether they be by Nintendo or otherwise.
It is night and day with the Switch where some hidden gems are released pretty much every week. Especially if people are willing to try something different.
I mean do people just play games 24/7?! Cause my backlog is ridiculous!
@BloodNinja
That dude just clearly has problems. Don't let some fascist take your tag line away.
@screechums
If you say you have left it, then actually leave it.
@TheFullAndy
Dude I haven't responded to that guy at all. I said that.
@screechums
Aye but you are still talking about him which could start it all up again
Not what I'd call leaving it.
Regardless, I have nothing else to say about it.
Have a good one.
@AndyC_MK
Awk just one of those things.
It's only videogames at the end of the day!
@screechums I’m just trying to have a good time. For the most part, the people on this site are very friendly, not sure why others haven’t caught on. This is a positive place!
NINJA APPROVES POSITIVITY
@AndyC_MK
I think people get too obsessed with what's coming out rather than looking at what is already there.
Between my PS4 and Switch I have hundreds of games I need to play through!
During this past year and lockdown I have not been short on games to play!
@SuperCharr
Welcome to the Nintendolife comment section, where the second you make any comment about the games you'd like to see or criticize Nintendo in any way some rando jumps down your throat and tells you you're entitled and complaining (then deletes his angry comments and says stuff about being "positive"). hahahaha. you can't make this stuff up!
@AndyC_MK
I have decided to play through all the Resident Evil games (0 to 7) before finally playing 8 when I manage to get a PS5. That alone will keep me busy over the summer months!
@AndyC_MK
Completed Remake, 4 and 5 before the rest will be new (completed the original RE2 and 3 but not the remakes which is what I am playing this time) but they are all in my backlog now ready to go.
Resident Evil 4 is my favourite game of all time, I consider it perfect and play through it a few times each year. When I get to it in my run through I will probably play it through about 4 more times before moving on to 5!
The fact that they didn't release many titles in 2020 just means they potentially have a higher budget on the games we're all waiting for, so be glad.
@SuperCharr
hahahaha same here. Everyone pretty much hates everything I ever say on these comment threads, and I'm usually just looking to have a good conversation. But it's pretty easy to bite into the angry ones and stir them up, and when they move to insult me I usually can't help myself . I find the angriest ones like to pretend you don't have any reason to have an opinion and shouldn't say anything at all, but don't give into that. It's nice to read some actual thought-out opinions in these comment threads, even if I don't agree. Especially when a vast majority of hatred seems to be what inevitably takes over.
Awesome, now I just want Metroid Prime 4 and I'll have all my Switch dreams come true.
@TheFullAndy
Oh man RE4 is one of the top 3 greatest games ever made in my opinion. Never get tired of that one. I think RE6 had the best control scheme of all the RE games, even if the game itself wasn't as good as some of the others. Also RE6's merc mode is so much fun I never get tired of it after all these years.
Some notes:
R&D spend is in no way indicative of a desire to bring a new product to market, nor does it tell us anything about the Switch's lifecycle or future. R&D spend is like advertising; it's generally budgeted as a percentage of revenue. As such, a good year means more R&D spend, that's just how it works.
Based on Nintendo's shareholder meeting, the single biggest problem facing the company right now is making Switchs. They STILL can't meet demand, and the global shortage of chips and other tech parts is getting worse. Not only is that a pretty strong sign that they are not trying to build a new system and cannibalise the parts they need to sell the one people already want, but honestly in that type of scenario, where a part shortage is keeping your from meeting demand, even if you HAD a new system ready you wouldn't launch it. You would divert whatever resources you've put to manufacturing it to work on your new system.
Think of it like this; if you know 20 million people already want to buy your current product and you can 't meet that demand, putting out a new system would not only look bad, but sales would be divided between new uses and old users upgrading. Given the ONLY number you care about as a console manufacture is install base (the number of people who own a system), you would be deliberately doing something that would SLOW DOWN your install base growth.
The only option is that you buy a manufacturing process in it's entirety, like how when cell phone screen where in short supply, cell phone makers bought other cell phone makers just to get the parts. This adds a bit of fuel to the far-fetched idea that Nintendo is going to buy Xbox (THE HARDWARE DEVISION THAT HAS NEVER MADE A PROFIT, NOT MS STUDIOS, THE $30 BILLION DOLLOR PUBLISHING POWERHOUSE)
I’d argue that Nintendo would be pleased with Mario Kart Live. It’s not a runaway monster success, but 1.27 million copies at a $100 msrp needs to be kept in perspective. During last Christmas it was hard to find them in stores and I think the max discount I’ve ever seen it selling for is $90. Overall I’d say not too shabby of a profit.
If you can't meet the demand for you current system (released in 2017!) making a new (pro) model will be a HUGE mistake! You will not be able to meet that demand either
Sounds like I missed some pretty entertaining comments. Everyone seems to be responding to someone but the comments they are responding to don't seem to be there for one reason or other. I don't think I have blocked anyone either. Oh well.
I'm glad Nintendo had a great year and people really embraced the Switch. When the Switch was first announced I thought it looked great for me but I wasn't sure if it would just have a cult following or if the wider public would embrace it. Glad to see it's the latter.
Great. Glad to see nintendo is doing so well. Now if only they'd buy platinum games.
@screechums
RE6 will be the one I am most looking forward to trying because of its bad rep funnily enough.
@N8tiveT3ch I know how you feel. I barely play any games anymore. It’s all just ports, cheap indies and JRPGs on Switch. I’d happily pay €100 for a new Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding, PilotWings, F-Zero, Advance Wars or Excitetruck.
I don’t mind indies but they’re all so similar - roguelikes and metroidvanias galore. So many JRPGs - I used to love them but the market is beyond saturated.
Smash Bros. Fans: But Sakurai said Fire Emblem was one of Nintendo's major IPs.
@TheFullAndy
Oh man don't let the bad rep get into your head. It has 4 different campaigns, plus like I said the absolute best control scheme of any game I've played. You can dive backward and shoot while pushing yourself along the ground, jump over railings, slam into the zombies, squish their heads when they're on the ground, and a lot more. So good. Plus it's the first RE game that let you shoot while moving and turning (Rev 1&2 and RE2&3 remakes took that function too). Plus RE6 merc mode has some fantastic levels. The storylines aren't as strong as RE4 or even RE5, but it's at least something different and original for the series even if it's not the best. Have fun man! I still play 6 all the time.
@gokev13
the angry guy deleted and edited some insulting comments and the ones with profanity. but yea it was all pretty funny.
@screechums
Good to hear!
Drought confirmed
@screechums
Oh? I would have guessed a moderator got involved. Oh well, usually when I am feeling angry or frustrated about life video games is one of my tools to relieve and process those feelings. I feel like at this point in time if someone can't find video games they enjoy and feel like they need to lash out about it maybe it's time to find another hobby.
@Thatsalie
Thatsalie
I love the switch but for over a year now there haven’t been many exciting releases for me personally. So I’ve been playing a lot of PlayStation for now. I’d be in the camp of those pleading Nintendo to expand into some new IPs. I am pleased they are doing well however!
@Filth_Element
New IP's or just delve into their massive chest of forgotten IP.
A new Wave Race, F Zero, Star Fox, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong, Eternal Darkness etc would be brilliant.
@xxx128 we already got an amazing Animal Crossing movie
Hopefully they start making games again
@TheFullAndy yes to Eternal Darkness! Agreed doesn't have to be whole new IP just something different would be good now that we have the regulars on the system let’s get crazy! Spend some of this new money on some risks...
@ModdedInkling well covid had something to do with not many games last year.
Funny to see people complain about Nintendo "not making new games" or whatever nonsense when New Pokemon Snap literally just released and was the best-selling game of last month (at UK retail, at least).
@westman98
Results are what counts.
Imagine if Nintendo perfected their online infrastructure, surely their revenue every year will be bigger than PlayStation (around $30 Billion maybe from current $16.6 Billion) & operating profit around $10 Billion from current $6 Billion
@Jemae
~33% of PlayStation's revenue comes from in-game monetization (DLC, MTX, lootboxes, battle passes). That makes sense, given that the most popular PlayStation games each year (Call of Duty, FIFA/Madden/NBA 2K, GTAV) are heavy on MTX or lootboxes.
Enhancing NSO will definitely help Nintendo, but not to the extent where they can nearly double their revenue. What they'll actually need to do is jam MTX, lootboxes, and bi-monthly battle passes into their most popular games, which I'm sure will piss off just about everybody on this website.
@SuperCharr Youre missing the bigger picture. Youve been a Nintendo fan for 25 years so youre prob in your 30s. Youre not gonna be around forever and Nintendos continued success cant solely rely on existing customers. Through animated movies and theme parks future generations buy in to Mario and co and thos can translate into more people buying Nintendo products giving them the resources to keep making the games we like and their success will see a conti ued contribution from 3rd parties who cant ignore successful install base.
@Scoopz
You definitely make a good point about this kind of stuff maybe bringing in new fans, but you ever see the 90's Mario Bros. movie or the 80's Super Mario Bros Super Show? Yikes. The theme park does look cool though, it's just that a theme park from a video game company is just marketing/licensing deals cashing in on something from about 40 years ago. It's like, Game of Thrones/GRRM can come out with all the plushes and pens and cupholders it wants, but what we all really want is the 6th book.
There is nothing I personally have against Nintendo making movies or theme parks or toys or whatever, but Nintendo as a first party developer is really lazy. New characters and new ideas rarely ever come out from them, and so many IP's we've loved for over 3 decades just languish in obscurity. I've been on for years about a new 2D Metroid, and while I love the 3ds one, it's just a (good) remake. They are a video game company and just simply don't put out the steady stream of products anyone would expect from a video game company. 5 different versions of the same system is a cheap money grab. How about a new Wrecking Crew? New DKC? F-Zero, Kid Icarus, Dr. Mario, etc.? Why not Mario Kart 9 instead of a re-release of 8? Why not "Mario World Switched" instead of just a re-release of the Wii U one? The answer is obvious: their customers just accept the same thing and continue to support this rehashed (but admittedly great) stuff. Yet the second you point this out some rude and obsessed fanboy comes to shout you back down, telling you you should have no opinion about it.
So, after all that, my point is how about another 2D Metroid!
Mario don't transfer to movies as well as Pokemon but when there's enough heart and money into the project it may surprise us. Although i would like to see more investments into development of new hardware and software. Also i would like to see more "mature" games, not only for kids
Just grow up, crybaby-babies!
Pathetic fanbase, just whine, whine, whine.
@NGNYS Actually, I'll thank you for not coming in here and insulting the entire audience. Quit while you're ahead.
They need to put their 11B dollar in the bank to work and buy an animation studio and a phone games studio
It will help to the growth of the company tremendously
@RiasGremory
I mean, that was pretty obvious. But they did have the resources like other game developers, but they simply chose not to work so hard on it.
A "spectacular" year? LOL, no.
@K1N6AC3 “so little first party games”
Compared to which other company? Sony? Microsoft?
What a bunch of whiny cry-babies. Reading comments here is always good for a laugh, it's amazing how many people only stick to one particular genre (action-adventure), and then when they put out games for everyone else, they scream "where's all the games?!!?!" Or my favorite, "they're forgetting about their past", while ignoring that they release things like Famicom Detective Club, Game & Watch, and Skyward Sword. They could put out a million games but if they're not action-adventure games a lot of people here will act like they don't even exist.
I'm all for Nintendo expanding their IP's to other mediums as long as it doesn't take away from the main priority of games. One of my fave memories as a kid was coming home from school and catching the Donkey Kong Country show. Even the Kirby & Sonic DX shows on Saturday mornings was cool just to see video game characters in cartoons/anime.
Exploring different mediums could potentially build less popular franchises up like F-Zero, Star Fox, Metroid, Earthbound, Wario, Kid Icarus, Little Mac etc... not only lore wise in which it could help with expanding the scope of each property, but which could also subsequently drive interest in developing, supporting and gaming with those IPs. Not to mention the product, merch & licensing opportunities... as well as potential future attractions now (Super Nintendo World expansions).
Sidenote: The anime shorts Nintendo had Production I.G. make for Star Fox a couple years were amazing and continuing that endeavour along with another series for F-Zero could be dope.
... Wun can only hope.
I've said this before, but...
Obviously and understandably the recent ongoing pandemic has had an effect on some development... but is anyone else curious about Nintendo's seemingly lessened release output during the Switch era after merging it's portable and home consoles into one unit? Wouldn't the assumption be they would be able to put out more varied titles, more frequently now than before given they only have to focus on Switch rather than say DS + Wii or 3DS + Wii U games? Seems like the opposite has happened somehow this gen with the Switch (so far).
I remember reading way back that some of their smaller DS dev teams were merged into the bigger teams, but just curious what their smaller teams are now up to?
Just thinking, not every 1st Party game has to be a major AAA release imo. Sometimes a Rhythm Heaven here or a Super Princess Peach game there helps tide people over in-between the next big release and can be an effective strategy.
I definitely maintain it should always quality over quantity. But Nintendo has rarely had issues with quality before and still maintained higher frequency of output in past portable/home console cycles. And while the Indie support on Switch is great, everyone pays heightened attention and looks forward to whatever Nintendo puts out on their own system.
For instance, I was thinking of Part Time UFO, that's a good recent example. I forgot about and missed Box Boy... and SnipperClips was fun, but a launch title so that was long ago now.
It just seems like we get less of those smaller notable 1st Party titles too this gen with large dearths & gaps between drops which probably makes it seem worse than it is. I'm not complaining about the overall quality of releases we do get, but the frequency and variety in terms of scope between titles leaves something to be desired currently.
But hopefully that changes soon with E3 coming up, so many gaming anniversaries, the Switch selling so well and rumours of an eventual Switch upgrade.
... Wun can only hope.
@jakebrake It's not as simple as uploading them to the store like Google Drive. It takes testing, time, money, people, resources, for each game. If only a small niche group of people want a game they won't put it on. Remember, Nintendo is a for-profit business first. If they can't make money off of it they won't do it.
@wuntyme8 Making games these days takes longer. A group of 20 could make Mario 64, but it could take 150 to make the next Smash Bros. Game. So many gamers just don't seem to understand how the industry works as a whole or how games are made. Because Nintendo values their quality it's going to slow down even more than a 3rd party developer who might rush a game out 6 months early and patch it up. Each 1st party title needs to be a major success before the next one can be made. It takes years to make these games rather than months like it used to 20 years ago.
