Square Enix has announced a sequel to the Nintendo DS classic, The World Ends With You.
Titled Neo: The World Ends with You, the game will launch on both Nintendo Switch and PS4 in summer 2021. The release window was revealed alongside debut gameplay footage in an announcement trailer for the title, which you can see above.
The game follows The World Ends with You: Final Remix, an enhanced port of the original game which launched on Switch back in 2018. Earlier today, the publisher also announced that the upcoming anime based on the series would be airing in Japan starting from April 2021.
NEO: The World Ends with You transports players to the streets of the Shibuya, where they will take part in the “Reapers’ Game,” a life-or-death battle for survival. Players will take on the role of Rindo as they explore the heart of Tokyo to uncover the mysteries behind the sinister Game in which they have been forced to take part.
NEO: The World Ends with You brings a re-creation of modern Shibuya to life in a unique and comic-inspired style. Players can explore and enjoy the sights, sounds, and culture of this bustling city, fight monsters alongside their ally companions in fast-paced action battles, and complete missions as they seek to change the fate they’ve been handed.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!
Oh sick! I’m ready for this
Let's foking GOOOOOOOO!!! I don't even mind the change to 3D it still looks recognizable and sick af
So stoked! Can't wait for it to come out!
FINALLY!!! Ahhhhh it looks amazing!!!
Nice! Here's hopping for a better control scheme than the weird mobile port of the first game we got on Switch.
I’m in! That’s awesome! Looks different but still great. Been hoping for a sequel for years.
How strange, it's coming to the PS4 in Summer of 2021?
Square Enix listened and gave us a TWEWY sequel.
Capcom listened and gave us 2 Monster Hunters, made for the switch.
EA listened, reheated a few PS3 games.
@RupeeClock I'm guessing they'll rely on the PS5's backwards compatibility.
The art style isn't going to benefit much from 4K or Ray Tracing.
@RupeeClock how come you think that's strange? The ps4 will carry on getting new games for atleast 2 more years
YEEEESSSSSS!!!!
Never played the original, but loved the look of the art style and as a KH fan, was super curious when they appeared in Dream Drop Distance.
This looks neat. Got a bit too hyped seeing spots I've been to IRL like Harajuku xD
Im really happy for those who connected with the first game story wise and gameplay wise. I bought and played the DS version back in the day. And I gave it an earnest try. I know I put a significant amount of time into it. But for whatever reason, I just could never connect with it on any level to finish the game. Just goes to show you no matter how well made a game is, sometimes it just doesn't land with everyone.
But as I said, I'm excited for those who loved the first one. I know from experience the pain of a game or series you love just being discarded or ignored by a developer for whatever reason. Especially when you know in your heart the quality of the concept and execution warrants it to continue
Yes finally, it's about time I relent getting the original after seeing the main character in Dream drop distance and I wanted to know who they were.
I do NOT regret that purchase.
This is fantastic news! I always thought the original game was really underrated. Glad it's getting the recognition it deserves! I'm all for this but I really hope they fix the gameplay mechanics for the sequel. The Switch port was so hard to control compared to the DS.
AAAAAAAAA yes yes yes yes yes. I've been wanting this for ages. And it looks fantastic, they translated the style to 3D wonderfully. The battle system looks intense, (but also very different, thankfully, since the original does NOT translate well to devices other than the DS). I wonder what the deal is with all this...
Also, I'm quite glad to see that the main characters appear to be quite different rather than expies of the originals. Seen that pitfall too many times in RPG sequels.
Suprised it's taking place in Shibuya again, kinda expected Akihabara or something. Though, given the move to 3D and the fact that the world map seems much bigger (there's tons of new locations shown), that shouldn't be a problem.
Really, really excited. I've just finished playing the Final Remix a few days ago, I love this coincidence.
@Cevil Play the DS original. They're much better.
Yay, one game I can definitely look forward to in 2021. Sweet.
@RupeeClock
Even Horizon Forbidden West will be published for PS4.
@Cevil but it came out on ds first - that's the version people love lol
@Perryg92 Yeah man it's pretty boss seeing tower records in this trailer then I was like EYYYY I BEEN TO YOU TWICE
I cannot believe this is real, they actually did it! FINALLY
Can it be?!? A real sequel to TWEWY?! YEEESSSSS
I hope the controls are better than the one on the Switch. I loved the original but the Final Remix's control aren't the best especially docked.
@Cevil the controls aren't terrible on the DS.
Part of what made the original game so good were the game mechanics/controls and how well it utilised the DS's dual screens. It'll be hard to make something that stands out so much with more traditional controls but I'm still super keen to see what they can do with it. It's been a long time coming. Really could have done with a sequel on 3DS but better late than never. Easily favourite IP of Square Enix's.
Amazing, Very nice!... this should be great on Switch.
Bravely and now this - 2021 on Switch already looking better. Year 4, lets get this going.
I died when I saw this, I need it so badly
Whoa whoa whoa... say what?????!!!!!!!
Well color me shocked! I guess 2021 isn’t gonna be cheaper than 2020.
On one hand, I loved the original and I'm glad there's a sequel (also, Minamimoto returns, he's this game's Axel).
On the other, it's the final nail on the coffin for the Kingdom Hearts ports for Switch, I guess.
Also also, this should get Atlus their $#it in check for a Persona 5 port, as the "urban JRPG with cell-shaded graphics" one is no longer uncharted territory for the sequel.
I might have to dust off the original and okay it again, I loved that game. I hope the second one isn't a disappointment.
As a great fan of the original, I actually don't think this was needed at all.
The first TWEWY was an amazing game that had everything resolved and was perfect as a stand alone experience.
I'm more worried than anything to be honest; the Switch Port already "ruined" the story of the original by adding stuff that forced it to continue.
Oooooh yeah. Loved the DS 1st game & liked the flawed but decently playable Switch remake. Can't wait for this.
Yeah okay GOTY 2010 contender coming through
To be honest, I find it difficult to get hyped for this as much as I would have when I was younger, waiting for over ten years for this to happen kind of does that. But I'm happy to see it looking and sounding this cool. Minamimoto making a return as a player earns a huge amount of fanboy points from me.
FINALLY
After all of the sequel teasing over what feels like an eternity, we are finally getting it!!!
Good timing, I'm giving a Switch, some of my games, and enough controllers to a mother of 4 so they can have a Christmas, and I was concerned about one of the games being TWEWY 1. Now there'll be relevance!
So zetta slow! They did great job keeping the same art style while switching from 2D to 3D. Excited to see how it turns out. I hope we get some music samples along the way.
I beat the original back in the day but never touched the extra day or the extra content in the Switch version. Should I? My original intent was to 100% earlier days before I moved onto the final day but I ended up doing about half before dropping the game altogether. Then way later I started a new game so I don't have an easy way to access the extra content now.
I just love how they kept the artstyle of the original game even when the sequel is in 3D ...amazing work!
@Late yeah, that is what I basically said!
@UmbreonsPapa This looks like it'll play differently than the original so I'd recommend giving it a chance.
No offense I did see this game but I do want sora or riku in it sorry..
now thats what im talking about
Welp, I guess the Switch really is going to be a crazy good platform for JRPG's in 2021. Can't wait for this!
Edit: Also, it's pretty hilarious how NL mentions PS4 and Pushsquare doesn't mention Switch in their announcement article. It's almost like Sony fanboys get away with being biased when Nintendo fanboys don't.
Yeeeeesssss this made my day! It looks great!
SE - best third party on Switch.
Switch handheld is the way to go!
@Cevil The controls aren't bad, you just need to play in handheld mode.
I'm yet to finish the DS game, but this is awesome news!
The original DS version is one of my all-time favourites. I'd lost all hope of actually getting a sequel, but this is a guaranteed day 1 purchase for me.
Loving how the game looks in 3D too. Combat looks a little more basic than the original but I guess that was very tailored to the DS... and the map looks so much more fleshed out than the original's static screens!
I’m so freaking excited!!! I never thought I’d see the day! I’m so hyped I’m going to go replay through the ds and switch games!
Very cool! Definitely going to have to pick this up when it launches! Hopefully there will be a physical release (and a special edition) on Switch and not just digital.
This is all just a big dream, right? Nobody wake me if so!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaayyy!!!
persona 5 fans so funny right now lol.
Where do I pre-order? Don't think the cash I'm shooting at my computer screen will work until I find a decent landing page.
Well dang, there we go. Absolutely buzzing for this... until I remember the Switch controls. The DS controls were perfect.
Is it possible for me to jump into this without having played the first game or should I at least watch a playthrough? The Switch's controls were awful and I don't have a DS.
it lost some feeling.
An interesting thing: next year we'll get sequels from typical portable JRPG sagas. Bravely Default, Monster Hunter Stories, and now TWEWY.
Are there any chances we'll get a new Golden Sun as well? XD
I hope we can still 100% this game on ultimate lvl 1 and they keep that core the same.
Also in the press statement doesnt say sequel, this looks more like a prequel, we saw kariya but not the girl.
We know kariya was the senior in twewy
Edit: idk why everyone is crying for the switch controls, they work perfectly fine, can easily do a 100% lvl 1 run on ultimate.
HEAVY BREATHING...... I have been waiting for this moment my whole life!
One of the best games ever, that surprised entirely out of nowhere....I really can not wait for this sequel, that is simply amazing.
@Cevil The game is well regarded for it's theme, story, mystery, characters, world etc. Mainly as a graphic novel. The gameplay was good at one time, but it was a game very designed explicitly for the DS, and its control scheme was designed to show off the unique play of the DS.
Gameplay-wise, no the mobile port and Switch port (based on the mobile port) don't really hold up at all, and you tend to fight the gameplay simply experience the world and story. But there's little that can be done about that...it was a game designed around a bespoke Nintendo device that no longer is sold, and it was either hack the wonky controls into something "functional" or let the fantastic game languish in the past.
I'm hoping the sequel, now designed for conventional consoles will have more enjoyable gameplay rather than shoehorning dual screen touch screens onto tapping or gyro controls.
@Tyranexx Just go with the Playstation port. Sony can siphon the $85 straight from your wallet.
@IronMan30 Sony fans are too busy waging war against the Game Pass bogyman taking all their games to notice Nintendo still exists and is actually taking all their games....
@NEStalgia Yeah, they do have a bizarre obsession with Game Pass.
@RupeeClock The PS5 plays PS4 games, and not everyone has a PS5 yet. So, it seems reasonable that if a game doesn't require the PS5 hardware, it's released on the PS4. Same thing happens on the XBOX, but most new games will have "smart delivery" there for the Series.
I am no longer an emo teen to be playing this game. I’ve got a mortgage and IBS.
Oh my god, finally, i dream about it in years!!!!!!!
I tried this on the DS and then again the demo on Switch but for some reason I didn't enjoy the controls, I might actually buy it and try to play longer. sometimes I only start to enjoy games a longer bit into them but Idk. what makes me want to is all the great reviews.
Never played the first one but it sound like this game Is amazing day one for me, I have to get the first game though.
@the_beaver Don't forget Capcom! Monster Hunter Stories 2 is also slated for summer 2021, and I'll bet anything on a Megaman Battle Network Collection as well. Not to mention Monster Hunter Rise, and even BOTW2... 2021 is going to be crazy for the Switch.
Completed the first game but wasn't a huge fan. Am still interested in the sequel though.
@Ulysses Capcom will be nice next year, but so far, they haven't done much XD, apart from rereleasing some old titles. SE have already released tons of great new games on Switch (and old ones as well) such as DQXI, Octopath Traveler or Trials of Mana, and next year we'll get Bravely Default 2 and this TWEWY 2.
I agree next year will be CRAZY on Switch.
@Otherboard with that avatar, I know you know the better DS games.
@Kabloop The Switch port of the first game has bad controls (so I've heard - I haven't played it). The original version for the Nintendo DS has controls that I'd call "bonkers but surprisingly intuitive" - you control the main character on the bottom screen with touch controls and his partner on the top screen with the D-pad or buttons.
@NEStalgia Think I'll stick with the Switch port for now, thanks.
Nice, another switch game to look forward to next year
Is the MC one of those people that always wear their face mask on their chin? Maybe that's why he's playing the reapers game.
Best gaming news I've heard in months. This is a case where I'll preorder a special edition if it looks anything like decent. Holding hope it comes with a soundtrack CD.
Whooooooaaaaaaa! This was the teaser!? Hol-eee crap!
Apparently the world didn't actually end with you.
I'll keep my eyes open for this. Need to try the first though.
I’ve never played the original, but I’ve always meant to try and give it a go based on the big love from it’s fans.
I am mostly surprised in the trailer by the accuracy of how certain parts of Shibuya (and a bit of Harajuku) are represented. I also enjoy how one of the last scenes shows the Parco building where the Nintendo (and other gaming related) stores are.
Looks like the characters moved slightly away from 2000s fashion.
@Cevil It became popular on the DS, where the controls made sense.
CALLING, A NEW CALLING
Let me go gravity
What's on my shoulder?
"Little by little, I feel a bit better"
Let me know
Set me free
I feel a bit older
Just once more unto the breach
"Dear friend, once more"
Wake up
Time for us to realize.
Oh hell yes! I have been waiting for a long time to jump back into this world!
