I really enjoyed the first game on Wii U and Dig 2 is a great sequel. It'll be interesting to what the developers will do next with the Steam World universe.
I played the original Star Wing on the SNES but this will still be the first game I play on the SNES mini as all the others I've experienced more recently through the Virtual Console. The SNES was my brothers and I had the Megadrive.
My favourites of the series are N64, Wii, 7 and 8. F-Zero has done all it can do without being the same thing over and over again. That's why it hasn't been done since the GameCube entry. I think the best they could do is an HD remaster, featuring tracks from the SNES and N64 games. With all the racers from GX.
My first experience with Nintendo was with the original Gameboy bundled with Tetris. First games I finished were Turtles: Fall of the foot clan and super Mario land. Never thought I'd be completing Super Mario Land again on the 3DS many years later and playing Tetris. No Turtles game though.
I see how the price increases on products like smart phones and laptops when the capacity goes from 32 gb to 64, to 128 and beyond. A higher capacity hard drive would have pushed the Switch over the £300 mark. Nintendo try, as with past generations to be cheaper than PS and XBOX. Maybe the best solution would have been to have 2 models at launch. 32 gb and 64 or 128 gb model. I've seen the PS and XBOX have choices of different hard drive capacities.
Choosing a winner sounds a little ridiculous given the Mega Drive was doing better at one point but only in some territories along with other ups and downs between the two platforms. Surely the event would serve much better as purely a celebration of the consoles. A look back at the highlights etc. With interesting discussions from people who worked in the industry at the time.
It would be quite expensive to get another joy-con just for a d-pad. An alternative accessory could be the d-pad by itself that can be stuck onto the buttons. The same inputs can still be made, even for beat em ups like Street Fighter.
It would be difficult for me to say if a particular console generation was a golden age. From 8-bit to present day there have been some great gameplay experiences. I love how gaming has evolved over time and how I still enjoy it, even with titles from the same developers and IPs. If anything makes this a golden age for gaming, I agree it's because of the variety. The vast amount of content available.
I played through the first zone last night after work. The graphics, sounds and animations are brilliantly done. I've encountered both special zones. It's a great tribute to the Megadrive games.
I hope the quality of the emulation is on par with the Virtual console service. The Mega Drive and SNES consoles will more than make up for the service not being present on the Switch.
I picked this up at launch. It's like SSF2 Turbo Revival on the GBA which I enjoyed. It's nice to have a version like that to play on the big screen. I'll give this secret character a try. I like the retro way of unlocking him. I still remember some of the button inputs from older games.
I chose the smaller model over the XL as I've read the games look better on the smaller screen. I have a good selection of cover plates which is also why I preferred the smaller model. I thought the cover plates would have been a strong selling point, resulting in the most sales. I get the impression that people love to customise by switching between different looks / designs. Especially when it comes to cool tech. But even with smart phones it seems people want bigger screens.
I bought the smaller model for the face plates. There were some really nice designs. I read some games don't transition so well to the XL screen as they weren't intended for the bigger display. Curious to know if many later games were affected by this, or if what distortion there was, wasn't that big a deal.
It seems the Switch already has a lot of third party support. Already it is performing better than Wii U. He shouldn't count the console out so early. It's as if he's ignoring the good progress and news that's already been announced.
@Mortenb there are some great examples of dual screen gameplay. Zombie U, Arkham City, Affordable Space Adventures, Wonderful 101 and the divisive Star Fox Zero. Too few that that functionality fell below the radar. Not everyone will be familiar with that concept or associate the Wii U with that. Its a shame given it's potential, but looking forward, good to see the Switch is faring better.
It sounds like the interviewer had the wrong idea about the Wii U gamepad. As if the off TV play was its main functionality. I think it was more about using both screens to give the gamer a more immersive experience. A reminder that the Wii U concept wasn't as clearly communicated as it could have been.
I love the sounds of these games. It's when I hear the music and sounds that I'm taken back to the good old days. I highly recommend Secret of Mana. It features 2 player co-op. Will be good to play Star Wing after it's absence from the VC service.
I managed to pre order one from GAME last night. It took a while as the site kept returning error messages but eventually I placed the order. Hopefully Nintendo have plenty of stock and continue to restock on their own store.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I know it shouldn't matter which store you order from. A pre-order should be fulfilled. But I wouldn't have picked Zavvi as they don't specialise in games. I've always pre-ordered from GAME and Nintendo UK and never had a cancellation. There may be some who have, but you'll definitley have better chances with the specialist retailers.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE mine to. Also Jet Force Gemini and Shadow Man deserve honourable mentions. I highly recommend the Nintendo 64 Anthology book. It's a fascinating read.
Those are some awesome ideas. I'd love to see the final game take that kind of form. My copy of Switch Player 4 is on the way. I'd recommend it to readers of NL.
While the Switch is an interesting concept and therefore good alternative, let's not forget it can still do incredible HD graphics. The console can deliver on that front. Breath of The Wild alone is proof of that.
I agree that a touch screen on a smart device isn't the ideal way to experience these past gems. A traditional controller will serve them better. I hope Sega games come to Switch VC.
Lots to be excited about. I thought Kid Icarus was a long shot but maybe they'll return to it one day. It's a very interesting world with good possibilities for gameplay and story.
What I'm most looking forward to is Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Zelda DLC and Metroid Samus Return. Mercury Steam did an amazing job with Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate.
I hope this is only being made because the developers have fresh and interesting ideas about what to do with the gameplay and story line. Fan demand alone is not a good reason. Ideally Nintendo or a third party, new to the IP, is handling development. I'd rather see something different from Retro Studios.
I'll be listening to the audio during my last hour at work. Hoping for more on Xenoblade 2. A Kid Icarus game would be a nice surprise along with the Retro Studios title. With lots of 3rd party support shown already, I think this will be a brilliant E3 for Nintendo.
I'm looking forward to the presentation. The Switch clearly has a lot of good things going for it. Lots more third party support has already been shown and I think here will be plenty more to come. The Switch is an amazing piece of hardware like nothing that has come before it. At least when you look at all the features it provides in one package. I think this is why third party support is, and will continue to be stronger. Along with the console being easy to develop for.
I already have console neon red/blue and another red/blue reverse pair. They yellow joy cons look nice but I don't want too many. I would rather hold out for a special edition set that hopefully will be done with certain big releases like Mario Odyssey.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I get where you're coming from. Don't want too many Wii U ports but I don't blame Nintendo for releasing them. The Wii U had some absolute gems, but not as big an install base to enjoy them. As Switch is appearing to be the comeback with more sales, they want more people to experience them who missed out previously.
@King_Johobo Thanks. It's exciting to think about what will come next. You can guarantee Nintendo will make the most of such a fantasy world with all kinds of ideas possible.
If the next Zelda game has an open world the same size as BOTW, I'd love to see it densely populated with towns and even a city or two. Or maybe they could also explore the alternate / parallel reality where what happens in one world affects the other. For another open air world they'll need to make it fresh and new.
After Brawl and the 4th entry, it may be difficult for developers to decide what to do for the next entry. The amount of time and content involved may also be a factor for not creating a new entry for now. In which case a deluxe version with DLC and other minor additions would be the best way to go to bring a Smash game to the Switch. If this is done then I would like to see new characters, stages and a new game mode.
@gp993 that's interesting. I think what made them on par with one another is that they were both 16-bit cartridge consoles where multi format titles were more or less the same. Some titles shone more on one than on the other. E.g. It was the Mega Drive for Mortal Kombat and the SNES for Street Fighter.
When I was in primary school there were no arguments over which console was better. Both SNES and Mega Drive were great consoles and it was ideal to have both. With kids who had siblings if one had the Mega Drive then the other had the SNES. It was good to grow up with both. The 90s were all about Sonic and Mario.
@mateq I tried round 2 and as the hour was coming to an end there were 2/3 more matches than expected before the connection was stopped. I felt I wanted it to end there. It was enjoyable and has depth but there were just the same modes played over and over. The final product may have more reply value. With more to unlock and more modes, before the additional updates are rolled out.
Lots of good choices there. Skull kid would be welcome as another villain from the Zelda universe. It would be great to have a Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter character in the same game. New character's aside, I'd like to see Kirby with a Robobot mech final smash.
I used the screen capture button on the MK 8 title screen before the "press L and R" text appeared. Copied it from SD card to PC for the wallpaper. I'd like the mobile version for my phone though.
@oatmealwarrior92 the games do look good on the portable but I to prefer playing on a T.V. I think it's the ultimate way to experience games on a bigger, more detailed display. Especially cinematic games like BOTW.
@Sidon_ZoraPrince Alien invasion crossed my mind to. Something from another world that isn't steeped in hyrule lore would be an interesting direction. That idea makes me think of games like Earthbound.
@Agent721 I agree, it can be done. All the more promising given what we've seen so far. And bearing in mind all the planning that has gone into this console and its games lineup throughout the year. There's reason to be optimistic.
Good review. Wasn't planning on buying this but I'll be ordering a copy now. There'll be plenty to keep me interested with all the different game modes.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE good call on Terranigma. Amazing game. Never played DKC 3 but played the second. Not sure which is rated best of the 3. I also played TMNT tournament fighters. Only once. Not sure how well it performed but would be good to revisit.
