I’ll be buying this. I wonder if the online community will be like Mario maker for sharing / rating / downloading. Not sure if this has been detailed anywhere.
There was an indie retailer in my home town with 3 stores. One was for rentals. During the 90s there were lots of Mega Drive and SNES games. £2.50 for 3 nights. I’d play them over the weekend and they would go back on Tuesday. I got to play a lot of games that I would have otherwise missed.
I think Demos are the way forward. So long as they provide a reasonable amount of gameplay.
Will be playing Ori and the Blind Forest. There are some awesome desktop / mobile wallpapers on the official Ori site. Also playing Picross 6 and I recently got Saga Ages G-Loc.
I think for the final counts, SNES had around 50 games and NES and Mega Drive had 70 something each. Some good titles that may be lost. More so with MD, as the NES games may still get re-released for Switch Online. Unless they get released through other means. It would be nice to have that whole Mega Drive collection released as a compilation. Or a select few that aren’t on the 50 game compilation that’s already out.
Project Zero: maiden of black water, Zombie U, Arkham City, Deus ex are some great uses of the dual screen setup. Aside from others I’ve missed, I think there are maybe too few examples. It is a rather unique and immersive way to play which is worth experiencing. With games like XCX and the compatibility with Wii games, a stronger case can be made for it. Worth purchasing.
I wouldn’t want F-Zero GX HD, because that would be like GameCube Resident Evil remake to the later HD version. Not enough of a leap. I’d rather have the SNES or N64 F-Zero as HD remakes.
They do need to innovate to some extent or consumers will tire of it. It’s easy to think otherwise when it hasn’t happened or when you haven’t played the other titles to death.
Very interesting read. Looking forward to playing this again. Like Majora’s Mask it offered a fresh take on the series formula that was, I think, well executed.
@AmplifyMJ it’s a good FPS. Something different. Like the template others were following for a while, It has regenerating health and you can only carry two main guns, so you have to swap one for a different one. In addition to the 2 main guns you have inventory slots for duel handguns, a rocket launcher and various grenades / explosives. So you have a bit more of an arsenal to carry around. You fight human soldiers and aliens. You have a tech suit which can cloak predator style, for a limited time and has a shied to reduce damage. You can only use one or the other. It has a good difficulty whereby you can’t rush in guns blazing. It isn’t too hard, but is enough to make engagements more interesting and rewarding. If you need a better idea I refer you to the NL review. It received a good score. It has received a big performance patch since release. That’s when I started playing and it’s ran well throughout.
When there was mention of Outer Worlds DLC I read the NL review of the base game again and bought the physical copy. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve played so far. Excellent game. Will be continuing with that. I’ve finished Horace and think I’m at the last boss with Crysis remastered.
Not sure if it’s changed much in the series but Symphonia has the best real time combat. It’s very satisfying when you rack up a combo and land a unison attack that has one of those compound attacks at the end. If I remember correctly. Symphonia and RE 4 were my GameCube games that got the most repeated plays.
During the N64 years I would buy Official Nintendo and N64(changed name per console release) magazines. They always made for interesting reading which has continued on this site through the same / different authors. With this collection of past magazines, highlights could be opinion pieces on the industry at the time, or future predictions.
Capcom Arcade Stadium is amazing. The virtual arcade aspect makes it the best retro compilation. Plus the wealth of customisation options. I’ve started Crysis remastered as that’s been on the backlog for a while. I’m having trouble with tanks after rescuing a hostage. I want to push on with Horace as well.
Kirby planet robobot would benefit from a Switch release. If the mech gameplay can be expanded upon for a sequel that would be good and they could release both games. Otherwise the N64 titles and Kid Icarus are the games I’d most like to see.
Zelda 2 was my first experience with the series. It was too difficult when playing on the NES but it was one of the first VC games I bought on the Wii and completed it for the first time. The save state did help. Moves it introduced, the down and up thrusts learned from knights would be included in other games like Smash Bros and Soul Caliber 2. I’d recommend Zelda fans give it a go.
@Tandy255 Given the size of the games, an N64 mini is probably the last console of that kind we’ll get and I’d love to see it happen. Both Zelda games would certainly be guaranteed.
As Mario got the all stars N64/GC/Wii game collection they could do the same with Zelda. The Zelda games are also so diverse. Maybe both N64 games, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. This would be the perfect way to bring series highlights on one console along with Skyward Sword. Especially as the NSO service only has NES and SNES games.
I found the controls troublesome only when trying to swipe too quickly, the intended diagonal sword slash would be horizontal instead. It wasn’t a big enough issue to make the game too difficult to play. I still enjoyed it. The new controls of the Switch version will remedy this.
Sometimes I get the impression some fans would have simply made Twilight Princess 2 with a bigger over-world than before. But thanks to creativity we got something different that worked really well. With the new button press controls, I hope more people will give this a try and enjoy it for what it is. Another great adventure game.
Mario Kart is a tricky one. On the one hand it’s been nearly 4 years since 8 deluxe was released. But on the other hand, 8 is still a strong evergreen title. I would love to see something new with this series. I’ve mentioned this before but I think a new Kid Icarus game would be good.
I’d love to see a Zelda collection. There may also be news regarding Sonic’s 30th anniversary.
I played the anniversary collection yesterday after not having played it for a while. I spent time on the first, a couple of the 2s, alpha 3 and then third strike. I like how they evolved over time. The sprites in the last version of SF 3 were very well animated. I just need a Mortal Kombat collection now.
The Wii entry was good but MK 8 is the better game. I didn’t like the stunt half pipes on the Wii so glad those didn’t return in 8. The anti-gravity mode was a welcome change.
I voted for the orange GameCube. It reminds of the orange zonda on the cover of Need for speed. The orange console also appears in the anime film Your Name.
Happy New Year! Not sure about Metroid Prime 4, but Bayonetta 3 and No More Heroes 3 I think are more likely to release this year. The pandemic does make releases harder to guess. Not knowing how things have been hindered and how long they will continue to be. Maybe there will be a Direct this month to give us an idea of what’s to come in Q1.
I’ve been really enjoying Doom Eternal with the new gameplay elements. Well deserved number 1. I ordered both Ori games from iam8bit store. Still waiting for those to be delivered. Hypnospace is on my wish list so I think I’ll finally pick this up tomorrow.
@SpaceboyScreams Robotnik would be a good choice. He’d probably be in one of his end level boss machines. With all the attachments they’ve had over the years there would be lots of possibilities for special moves.
Sephiroth was an excellent choice. Will be using him a lot. I think all the third party characters have another from their world that would be a good fit.
@Danrenfroe2016 @Yanina that’s interesting you mention that. I think they have the physics spot on. Rather than have a disconnect between the car and the road where it feels like an object floating along.
It’s really well done, the cars are anchored to the world you’re driving in, with the weight.
I wouldn’t say it’s too heavy. It makes the driving feel more satisfying when you do it well.
I always get new consoles from Nintendo’s own store (not sure if there is Play station equivalent) or GAME. They use Royal Mail who have a better rep. Argos also use their own deliverers. I don’t know what the price differences are like but would be worth it for the reliability.
Need for Speed(still need to get a hang of the drifting), Age of Calamity and Doom 2. Doom 2 was started but then got left for a while so will be finishing that.
I bought mine on launch day. I think the game pad concept was a great idea when you consider the successful dual screen gaming of the DS, brought to the home console. With it, better immersion in games like Zombie U, Batman Arkham City and Deus Ex through the hacking gameplay. It was easy to think the new hardware concept would result in more clever ideas with more 3rd party support. It’s unfortunate that it didn’t work out that way. Still, the console had some amazing games and it’s good to see some of them ported to Switch for a second chance.
I would like a remake with current gen, modern visuals. I think the fictional world of dead side and supernatural elements warrant it all the more. The updated visuals and previously cut content are still welcome as they are. Day one purchase for me.
My Game & Watch will be arriving in the post today. I’m waiting for a review of Need for Speed. If it scores well, I’ll buy. I passed on Burnout Paradise.

Because of the amount of things you can upgrade there’s more empowerment between runs and far less grinding at the same level to get fewer upgrades that are too distant. I think the game is more generous with permanent upgrades and run specific upgrades and that’s what makes the gameplay loop more addictive and fun.
If you like the Greek mythology side of things, I’d recommend reading Stephen Fry’s Mythos and the follow up Heroes.
