Ever Oasis was going to have a tough go of it from the beginning. RPGs on the 3DS have been plentiful. Think of the hours players still have to put into some of the latest titles.
It seems that some thought should have went into putting EO on the Switch. Most people are slowing down on BotW. Arms is a fighting game so it wouldn't have competed. I just think it was a bad decision to go with the 3DS.
I know that development had begun on the 3DS, and it is difficult to change in the middle, but in the end, it probably would have found a longer life on Switch.
I am dating myself, but my first intro to the gaming world centered on the 2600. I remember we first received the 5200, but their controller had issues so it was taken back for the 2600.
While the 2600 introduced me to video games, it didn't really mesmerize me the way the NES did, but there were still some gems I really enjoyed. Jungle Hunt, Empire Strikes Back, and Pitfall to name a few.
I will approach this with guarded optimism, I guess. I am really going to need to see what the go-to-market strategy is though.
Next to Nintendo, Wayforward makes the best platformers. I am looking forward to this quite a bit. I could care less about the movie, but I'm all over the game.
Maybe it was because I was burned by Mighty No. 9, but I think I'm going to hold off on this one. The entire development process behind this has me feeling the same way No. 9 made me feel.
I think this is finally the year Mother 3 comes to the US. Animal Crossing for the Switch is a possibility. I don't think Metroid will be there. Luigi's Mansion or Skyward Sword HD.
My off the wall prediction would be a new Kid Icarus for the Switch. With Mario Odyssey already announced, I just don't see another big game.
My Nintendo Rewards is so incredibly disappointing. If you are a fan of Nintendo, they give you nothing new. I have all of the wallpapers, videos, etc. I lose coins every month. Last month was the first month I actually lost gold coins. It is a little irritating.
The more this drags on the more I think the NES Classic was a stop gap for the Wii U short fall. The Switch wasn't ready for the holidays. Nintendo needed something so they manufactured this.
It is the only way you can explain not making anymore. They were making a huge profit on this, I imagine.
If what he says is true, I can't imagine there will be an SNES Classic. You know, got to think about the future.
I don't think that they should waste resources on this product. I'm not talking about the helardware either. At some point, it would be in Nintendo's best interest to focus on a single system.
We talk about lack of software for Wii U. What if the 3DS and Wii U would have been one and the same? You would have had a great gaming at least a couple of times a quarter.
Ultimately, I think the Switch is going to run into the same problem the Wii U had. Let's just hope it is popular enough for some third parties to pick up the slack.
The Switch is doing a solid job of leveling the playing field because of its portability. I have listened to plenty of podcasts with people who have two systems saying they wished they could take that Xbox or PlayStation game with them. That is a huge difference over past Nintendo hardware.
The rub though comes back to the hardware, and I think there is plenty of blame to go around.
Nintendo makes amazing first party software. It can be intimidating to third parties, and Nintendo hasn't always been the best partner.
Likewise, third parties very rarely have brought their 'A' game. They have relied on past generation ports or mediocre games. Why would anyone support that?
Does the Switch need third parties? For breakout success, the answer would be no. It can enjoy success and profit with just third parties though.
I'm torn on this. Mario Kart 8 was my favorite Wii U game. I find it hard to pay full price for a game with only one more additional mode. After all, considering I paid full price the first time and bought the DLC, I have a lot invested in the game.
I don't doubt that it will be amazing to have a good number of people to race against online. I just don't know if will buy it.
@Darius_Truxton Jordan's name and likeness actually demand more money now then when he played. It's a little ridiculous, but I guess you have to protect the brand.
Maybe him and some of the others mention will come to DLC. As single player downloads, it could allow you to pick who you wanted without having to break the bank.
I don't disagree with his answer to the question that was posed to him. I agree with many on here that the price tag will hinder it through the first year, but that won't become apparent until they get production ramped up.
E3 will go a long way in determining the short term success of the Switch. I know Nintendo is preaching the two pillars of Switch and 3DS, but I think it's smoke and mirrors.
I do believe Switch or at least the Switch family is the successor to 3DS. Once the first Pokémon game hits, I think the Switch will bring in the 50-60 million units sold.
Nintendo needs to just stay the course until they can get there.
I'm not saying they will hit the 16 million mark. However, the idea they are not going to have enough titles leaves me scratching my head.
I don't think Mario Kart will have a huge impact. A lot of the people who swear by Nintendo purchased 8, and listening to some of them, they aren't going to buy it again just for the battle mode. It will still move systems because of so few of Wii U's sold.
That said. Splatoon 2 will go over huge. If nothing else, Japan will move a ton of this title. This should help sustain sales until November until Odyssey comes out.
As great as Breath of the Wild has been tought to be (don't own the Switch yet), Zelda is not necessarily for everyone. Mario. Appeals to the masses. The promise of an open world Mario game should really push holiday demand.
If the Switch can manage to keep the indies and a few third parties releasing titles in between big releases. It has a shot. Not to mention, Nintendo usually has some sort of surprise game around E3 that will ship prior to the end of the year.
@gatorboi352 Minecraft is more of a console PC game than an iPad. We have Minecraft on both, and my kids hate the iPad version. They are strictly console with it. Makes me wish I hadn't dropped the $7.99, but it was our first version.
@Tempestryke My first thought as well. It doesn't make a lot of sense to waste all that packaging space on such a small case. In the scheme of things it doesn't make a difference, but it is odd.
If someone has already mentioned this, I apologize for the repeat. I imagine that the internal battery will not matter.
The technology inside the Joy-Cons seem to be a good deal ahead of the technology of the Switch itself. I think you are going to see Switch upgrades similar to what Apple does with the iPad.
The Joy-Cons will just slide into the newer more advanced Switch. I'm betting they upgrade this thing every 3 years at the most.
This is the kind of thing. Intense should have been doing for years. If they would have taken the same approach to marketing, we may still be playing the Wii U for at least another year.
At first, I was a little irritated at the lack of storage, but it's actually a better set up than the Xbox ONE. I hate having to load the whole game just to play it.
Plus, on the 500gb system you can only load 8 games. I know that is still quite a lot, but I like the idea of just popping the game card in.
I'll deal with it. It won't be a system killer for me.
If the rumor mill had not continuously predicted that the system would come in at $250, this would all be a non-issue. I have heard the argument that the Switch is more expensive than Xbox ONE and PlayStation 4, but it isn't compared to what they retailed for at launch.
This is two systems in one. I know they have the 3DS, but that is going away in a year or two. I believe Switch is the next Nintendo portable as well.
You have to consider the fact that the Joy-Cons are the most sophisticated piece of technology on the Switch. I believe they are designed to go out multiple generations of the Switch. I would not be a bit surprised if Nintendo brought out an upgraded Switch two years from now, and you used the Joy-Cons you already have.
It is weird how we all want Nintendo to do different things, but we don't want to pay for different things. If Nintendo had brought out a home console with the same power as the PS4 or XBONE, people would have been irritated that it wasn't innovative enough even if was cheaper or at the same price.
Bless their hearts! Nintendo just stinks at messaging. At least, this is the case in the Western part of the world.
I'll admit. I was left a little empty after the initial Switch presentation. They emphasized the wrong things.
Then, they turn around and give a pretty major Direct with Fire Emblem, today. I mean a mainline FE game on a home console next year. That's good news.
They just stink when it comes to messaging. That's about the best I can come up with.
This is probably the most disappointing of the new announcements. There is no way I'm buying this game. I bought MK8 and the DLC. It is not worth $60 for me to add Battle Mode.
Give me eight new Grand Prix tracks and maybe. Without them though, I could care less about this game. This is definitely a miss for Nintendo.
I don't think anyone will question the quality of Nintendo Systems. They do a wonderful job. They put so much thought and innovation in them. In fact, one could say they put almost too much thought and innovation in them.
The system is expensive. That's the elephant in the room. I was in at $250. It's just $50, but that is me who loves video games and Nintendo. Where is the public in general going to be at on the $300 price tag.
The jury is out on whether or not I preorder this right now. Now, if this had launched with Mario Odyssey, I would have been all over it.
First impressions of the presentation for me were not great. It was pretty avaerage overall. I think they would have benefited from letting the respected regional heads lead a specific presentation for their regions.
I think the launch lineup is pretty weak. If one were to give and impulsive forecast, I'd say this will sell more systems than the Wii U because of portability. However, this won't come close to touching total sales for systems like PS4.
Things could change. A Pokémon Stars would go along way in selling systems.
@ollyander I know where you are coming from. They are putting a lot of stock in Zelda, and as great as it looks, everyone is not a fantasy fan. Mario Kart being left out was really dumb considering it seems to be fixing the battle mode.
I don't know. The marketing department still needs help. It's like they didn't do a good enough job with Wii U differentiating it from the Wii, and they decided taat this time they'd try to focus on that.
As for the games, it was very Japan oriented, and that is fine. I completely get it. I wish the respective regions would have been allowed to do their own thing after the initial presentation of the hardware.
This was one presentation that should have been region specific. I understand why it wasn't, but it left me feeling a little empty. There just wasn't enough to it. I know it is weird since it was an hour.
I'm a little put off by the $300 in the US. Day One, Zelda seems to be the only game right now worth looking at. Mario Kart in April will help, but I have played the heck out of that game on the Wii U.
Mario looks amazing, but it is a holiday release (maybe). I can probably wait until then, but we will see. Splatoon 2 is something my son will just love so we will see.
@Bunkerneath You are so correct in talking about the Wii U marketing. I think they started showing commercials in front of family movies two weeks before release.
@mike_intv I completely agree with you in why this is coming out in March. The rabid fans will be highly irritated if they don't get it day one, but most will wait for their preorder because it will not be needed for the holidays. I love Nintendo, but I would be happy to take odds that they will not have enough supply in March.
@KiWiiU_Freek There were no preorders in the United States. Some stores tried, but they ended up canceling them when Nintendo opted not to go that route.
Another thread mentioned the length of time production takes. From announcement to launch was around four months. That's not long.
It makes you wonder if this was some sort of stop gap to get them through the holiday season since they effectively had nothing outside of Sun and Moon. Market research should have done a better job, but this is Nintendo MO.
I think I heard it on NVC, and it holds true again. Every great Nintendo innovation comes with an apology attached to it. This seems to be the case again.
@Wolfgabe While I agree the production process takes time. Market Research should have done a better job at forecasting sales. There is not a soul in any marketing department that would think this would fail. People have been clamouring for this since they started releasing the Flashback series (Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision).
I know a lot of people have been saying to wait until Black Friday, but if you have looked at any of the leaked ads, this isn't in them. It's in the Holiday catalogs but not the ads. I'm thinking the next shipment doesn't come until December.
I think there are two more rounds and that's it until after the holidays.
@TheLZdragon Definitely, we get irritated. We say mean and horrible things about their family members. Then, we buy one any ways. I know I'll pick one up as long as it is before Christmas. However, their marketing department leaves me scratching my head constantly.
Amazon couldn't have gotten many. I was early and had it timed to refresh at the second. Didn't get one.
As for Nintendo, they have had the date set for some time now. They knew the demand was there. They could have easily manufactured twice the amount, and every one of them would have sold before Black Friday.
Again, I could almost be accused of being a Nintendo apologist, but there should have been skids of these sitting out. My Walmart received just 6. GameStop did get 12, but 0 extra controllers.
No excuse for this considering amiibos should have been a dry run. As far as I can tell, they look to be doing the same thing with Switch.
Klonoa was a solid game. I really enjoyed it and I wish I hadn't been at that stage of my life where I traded games in after I had beat them. I'm not sure if it has legs beyond the game, but I'll support it.
I hear what he is saying, but I dont see it happening. I think the 3DS Hans around another year. By 2018, they will have developed a gamepad that has a better battery life.
I think they release it on its own as a successor to 3DS that is compatible with the Switch.
What third party developers were doing with 3DS is going to go away fast? Nintendo will be left as the only developer for 3DS, and I don't think that fits with the merger of the two sides of the business.
A successful showing by Super Mario Run would just add to the fact that if they are seriously going to develop for two systems, Switch and mobile will be the two systems.
I think Nintendo is just a few changes away with Splatoon to having a very good eSports title. If you add in voice chat, and actually allow teams to be put together, the game itself is different enough from other shooters to find a niche. There is strategy beyond just taking the other team out, and it would be very interesting to see some of these teams work through that. Good article!
@capitalism Then, you can go ahead and own one console. I'm okay with that. I'll buy the Switch, the PlayStation 4, and the Scorpio. I'll be happy, and you'll be happy. I'll be in the 24% and consider myself an elitist.😁
@capitalism I'm not out to argue with anyone, but 48% is still almost half the population polled. This doesn't take into the fact the margin of error (which could go either way). And, if you consider this number as it compares to some of us old guys who owned the NES when it first came out, 48% is a lot larger number than what would have owned two consoles in those days.
I would go as far to say, that dual consoles are becoming more of the norm. This should continue if the Scorpio truly is designed to be for PC gamers. Plus, Microsoft and Sony are realizing what Nintendo has been doing for years. If you develop quality first party software, people will buy your system no matter what other system they have.

Re: Limited Stock Brings Out the Inevitable NES Mini Scalpers
@Wolfgabe While I agree the production process takes time. Market Research should have done a better job at forecasting sales. There is not a soul in any marketing department that would think this would fail. People have been clamouring for this since they started releasing the Flashback series (Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision).
I know a lot of people have been saying to wait until Black Friday, but if you have looked at any of the leaked ads, this isn't in them. It's in the Holiday catalogs but not the ads. I'm thinking the next shipment doesn't come until December.
I think there are two more rounds and that's it until after the holidays.
Re: Nintendo of America Promises 'Steady Flow' of NES Classic Edition Units Through Holiday Period
@TheLZdragon Definitely, we get irritated. We say mean and horrible things about their family members. Then, we buy one any ways. I know I'll pick one up as long as it is before Christmas. However, their marketing department leaves me scratching my head constantly.
Re: Nintendo of America Promises 'Steady Flow' of NES Classic Edition Units Through Holiday Period
Wow Twitter is harsh to Nintendo. As much as I love Nintendo and their products, they deserve everything they get today.
Re: Nintendo of America Promises 'Steady Flow' of NES Classic Edition Units Through Holiday Period
Amazon couldn't have gotten many. I was early and had it timed to refresh at the second. Didn't get one.
As for Nintendo, they have had the date set for some time now. They knew the demand was there. They could have easily manufactured twice the amount, and every one of them would have sold before Black Friday.
This is their holiday marketing plan.
Re: Limited Stock Brings Out the Inevitable NES Mini Scalpers
Again, I could almost be accused of being a Nintendo apologist, but there should have been skids of these sitting out. My Walmart received just 6. GameStop did get 12, but 0 extra controllers.
No excuse for this considering amiibos should have been a dry run. As far as I can tell, they look to be doing the same thing with Switch.
Re: Klonoa IP to be Turned Into an Animated Movie
Klonoa was a solid game. I really enjoyed it and I wish I hadn't been at that stage of my life where I traded games in after I had beat them. I'm not sure if it has legs beyond the game, but I'll support it.
Re: Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima Feels The 3DS Can "Continue In Its Own Form"
Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch and eSports - Targeting A Lucrative but Tricky Market
Re: Talking Point: Imagining a Future Nintendo Switch Budget Spin-Off - A Non-Switching Microconsole
@capitalism As long as we are both happy that's all that matters!👍
Re: Talking Point: Imagining a Future Nintendo Switch Budget Spin-Off - A Non-Switching Microconsole
@capitalism Then, you can go ahead and own one console. I'm okay with that. I'll buy the Switch, the PlayStation 4, and the Scorpio. I'll be happy, and you'll be happy. I'll be in the 24% and consider myself an elitist.😁
Re: Talking Point: Imagining a Future Nintendo Switch Budget Spin-Off - A Non-Switching Microconsole
