As you're no doubt aware, press events are currently taking place to showcase the Nintendo Switch, with some also open to the public this weekend. We attended the London event and took the opportunity to put the hardware through its paces, testing out its varied control options and functions. We'll be previewing a whole lot of games, while a number of our writers will be sharing their personal opinions on the Switch, but we thought we'd kick off with impressions on the actual hardware. Nintendo, after all, puts a lot of focus on its concepts and how they are realised.
We're splitting this into two sections. Anthony Dickens is going to focus on the build quality of the system, considering aspects like screen resolution / quality, ergonomics and so on. Tom Whitehead will then focus on key aspects of playing the system, looking into its various configurations and tricks; we'll then wrap-up with a conclusion of our early thoughts.
We think you'll be slightly surprised; this is certainly a different approach from Nintendo, in a good way.
The Build and Quality of the Nintendo Switch Hardware
In lots of ways the Nintendo Switch perhaps seems slightly more of a handheld than it does a home console, and because of that the final form factor of the device itself is critical to its success. Nintendo has also decided to ditch its successful handheld "clamshell" design to make way for the marriage of its 30 years of console evolution. Handheld technology has advanced exponentially in the past decade, and you would be right to instantly think about the Nintendo Switch as a small to medium-sized tablet with mini controllers attached on the end - but is it a good quality tablet, or one of those nasty cheap ones that currently flood the market?
Having finally had the device in our hands we can answer some of our burning questions about weight, general feel and the quality of the screen. Even though we only had our preview with the device in a rather low-light environment the overall quality felt good; not as slick as an iPad Pro, obviously, but well finished and well constructed. It's a much thicker device than an iPad, but the extra "chunk" gives you something for your hands to grip onto, and it does not feel so thin that you could accidentally bend or break it. It's robust.
Weight wise it's slightly heavier than a Wii U GamePad - unsurprising as it's a console with plenty of innards - but also feels much more solid. With Joy-Con controllers plugged in the left/right analogue sticks and general button configuration is smaller and more compact across the board, and it took a couple of seconds to get used to the new layout. It's also worth noting that the sticks are nevertheless bigger than those on the PS Vita, as a point of comparison. The lack of real analogue triggers may be a disappointment to some, but the digital trigger buttons feel responsive and satisfying during a power slide in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Interestingly the shoulder buttons, whilst relatively thin and sleek compared to the rather chunky variants on the Wii U GamePad, feel like an improvement and 'click' nicely when needed.
To give you an idea of scale, when holding the Switch your hands are almost double the distance apart compared with a standard New Nintendo 3DS. For an adult gamer, like most of us, this should be a far more comfortable position to play your games. Naturally this extra space between your hands is now filled with a lovely bright and colourful 720p screen, just over 6 inches in size. The resolution seems absolutely perfect for the screen size on offer, and gone are the pixelated memories of your 3DS or DS. As mentioned earlier the Switch preview was held in a relatively low-light environment so we were unable to test the screen in a well-lit area, however we felt the screen performed excellently in the dark room, with vibrant colour simply dripping from the screen after a quick Turf War battle in Splatoon 2.
Using the Switch in "Tabletop" mode - in which its little stand is used to prop it up - was also a pleasant experience, providing you don't place the screen too far away from the players. There's a sweet spot of around 0.5m to 1m between player eyeballs and screen before things start to get too small, depending on the game, of course. This setup worked great on a coffee table with both of us sitting forward clutching our Joy-Cons. Unfortunately, we were unable to slide the controllers off the console ourselves, but we gave the neon miniature controllers a good fondle. They do feel small, of course, but they do not feel flimsy or cheap; they feel modern, well built and should be easily held by players of all shapes and sizes.
Playing the Switch in Various Ways
The Nintendo event, somewhat typically of the company, seeks to control the experience rather tightly. Demo units were configured in specific ways in London, so we worked around various available options to really test out the controllers and configurations for playing games on the system. The only thing we didn't physically do was clip and unclip Joy-Con controllers to the console, but we managed to cover pretty much every other angle.
First of all, let's talk about the Joy-Con controllers. Multiple demos utilised them on their own, either as a tiny individual unit on its side - for a simple platformer like Sonic Mania - or as a showcase motion-based marvel, like a much flashier Wii Remote.
The key showcase of the Joy-Con was 1-2-Switch, with 6 minigames available to play. The most impressive was a simple game utilising the force feedback in a remarkable way, as you try to guess how many virtual marbles are 'in' the controller. It's incredibly tactile and effective at its best, though in a safe cracking minigame one of our controllers did lose its calibration temporarily; there were a lot of signals bouncing around the room. None of the game demos utilised the hand gesture sensor, but a few did put the motion controls to work - they function just fine, as expected. The real eye-opener, though, is the 'HD' force feedback - it's hugely impressive, and could add a lot to games in the future.
Anthony's already covered the Switch + Joy-Con configuration - it feels like a fairly sizeable but nevertheless satisfying portable device. In fact, it was easy to get blase about the fact we were playing games like Splatoon 2 on a portable screen, but it's a pleasurable experience. The screen does the games justice, and it's easy to imagine eager owners falling in love with the freedom to play a game on the TV, then decide to go portable and finish a level while snuggled up in bed or in a comfortable chair elsewhere in the house. Another fun note is that we played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe each with a Joy-Con in a mini wheel, bringing back memories of Mario Kart Wii in particular.
Of course, the Pro Controller will be a big purchasing decision, especially for those eager to play the Switch a lot at home on the TV. The major switch-up is the right analogue stick dropping below the face buttons, making the layout more similar to Xbox One / PC pads. The general feel is excellent, matching its Wii U predecessor for comfort, and it has a legitimate sense of quality. The big change, though, is that it has full motion control support. We played Splatoon 2 with a Pro Controller and the combination of analogue sticks and motion inputs felt as smooth as on the Wii U GamePad. The shooter handles the map differently, of course, due to the lack of a second screen - you now view it with a press of X, and when catapulting to a location on a respawn you select a spot with the D-Pad. Overall, the addition of motion controls to the Pro Controller is well implemented.
Finally, let's consider the console's screen and the 'Switch' mechanism between handheld and TV. Demos for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had that option, so naturally we put it to the test. Starting on the TV using a Pro Controller, we simply undocked the console and its attached Joy-Cons and it switched to the portable mode almost instantaneously; it then asks you to hold two shoulder buttons and press A to confirm the change. Doing the reverse and putting the console into the dock is a little slower, with 2-3 seconds between docking and the image popping up on the TV; when you do this it then asks you to register a Pro Controller or, of course, you could use the Joy-Con options with the Grip. It's seamless, all told, albeit with that minor delay going from portable to TV.
As for performance docked and undocked, we'd ideally like to test much more comprehensively before making a call on that. Considering the portable screen, though, the Breath of the Wild visuals suited the handheld well. Though you can soak in greater detail and see smaller features more clearly on a TV, we could easily envisage many hours adventuring with Link on the tablet-like system.
Conclusion
When discussing the look, feel and functionality of the Switch and its controllers, we ended up rather impressed with the console; we have other concerns for other articles, relating to price, launch line-up and so on, but the hardware itself is on solid ground. At its price and with its target audience in mind, it even feels relatively premium, especially the core console. It is a slicker bit of kit than a 3DS or Wii U GamePad - not a high bar, admittedly, as those systems are chunky plastic toys in design, even though we love 'em. Nevertheless, it's a design that suggests Nintendo has recognised that it needs its systems to be sleeker and more desirable; less child-like. Children nowadays are accustomed to smartphones and tablets, in many cases, and grown-ups typically prefer tech that looks presentable and classy. The Switch certainly delivers in respect to this, even with its liberal use of plastic materials for the Joy-Con controllers in particular.
Overall, we left our preview event pleased with the design of the hardware. Beyond superficial aspects, too, it's a smartly implemented and clever piece of technology. The Joy-Cons are little marvels when put through their paces, and even simple games like Snipperclips feel extra fun when gathered over the console's screen with a Joy-Con apiece.
We're looking forward to spending more time with Nintendo's new vision for console gaming.

Hoping so bad Nintendo doesn't drop the ball. They really need to keep the games coming this time.
Nice to hear that the switching feature is pretty fast and painless. There are a lot of things I'm iffy about, but if the core functionality of the system is robust, then I'm really excited to have it in my life.
" The shooter handles the map differently, of course, due to the lack of a second screen - you now view it with a press of X, and when catapulting to a location on a respawn you select a spot with the D-Pad."
LOL literally every time someone would tell me how games like Splatoon wouldn't have been possible without the 2 screen experience of Wii U, this is EXACTLY how I would detail getting around having to use 2 screens.
"Weight wise it's slightly heavier than a Wii U GamePad"
Pretty sure that doesn't sound like a VR-friendly weight, but I guess I could be surprised.
@gatorboi352 it's how I would imagine they could do it, but there are still a couple of downsides since it will probably be a little bit slower and it looks like squid beakons maybe gone which I like to use a lot on the Wii U.
What I believe Nintendo is severely overestimating is the perceived value of the portable aspect of this console.
I really don't see people lining up in droves to purchase a switch because you can also play it on the go.
Still can't believe they aren't packing in 1,2 Switch the 6 mini-game collection. It's not a system seller by any means, worse than Nintnedo Land by a lot, but they have to bundle something. Or bundle if w/ a pair of $80 Joycon. So many high prices for hardware and software, haven't seen a money saving bundle yet. That's just wrong.
And they aren't opposed to bundling, Zelda BotW has 3 different price points for the software and stuff.
Oh well, we'll see what the holidays bring.
@yokokazuo I'm just happy I won't have to pull my eyes away from the TV screen while playing anymore. Not just with Spla2oon, but in general. Two screen gaming was not meant to be on a home console.
Their accessory prices are atrocious.
"we have other concerns for other articles, relating to price, launch line-up and so on"
grabs popcorn
Can. Not. Wait to read those.
At this point in my gaming life, I know the console will be fun and perfect for my needs. I know there will be lots of games to fall in love with. But dear lord, Nintendo you really make it hard with your messaging.
It's like trying to explain the plot of Game Of Thrones in the medium of Charades.
Nintendo could just release updated Wii U. Cheaper, with redesigned gamepad, more light, better battery life. Market it another way, just before SB or MK8 releases. But they decided just drop it into trash can, wii u owners alongside.
@Xaessya I mean really, the more info that keeps coming to light on Switch, the less appealing it appears to be. The accessory pricing is simply one aspect of this.
I don't think anyone will question the quality of Nintendo Systems. They do a wonderful job. They put so much thought and innovation in them. In fact, one could say they put almost too much thought and innovation in them.
The system is expensive. That's the elephant in the room. I was in at $250. It's just $50, but that is me who loves video games and Nintendo. Where is the public in general going to be at on the $300 price tag.
The jury is out on whether or not I preorder this right now. Now, if this had launched with Mario Odyssey, I would have been all over it.
Sorry to be a negative Nancy but I'm not sold. I'm maybe a bit biased because the portable part is wasted on me but it's all very meh so far.....
I need more games and features I think to get all fanboy about it. I assume pikmin didn't get a mention and the new 3d Mario needs to wow me a bit more yet. I'll probably buy Zelda on Wii U and get a switch at Xmas to see how it plays out?
Well, we can kiss GameCube Virtual Console games goodbye if there are no analog triggers.
I'm hoping mostly that the price of the games comes down. £59.99 for BOTW?
Overall the launch line up of games is better than Wii U, but purely because of BOTW which is a killer app on its own. There is very little else to write home about.
After rumours pointed towards Mario being a launch game I was ready to believe this to be the case. I'm beginning to wonder about what exactly Nintendo have been working on since these final days of Wii U. I was under the impression they had little to show in recent times because they were effectively porting titles over to Switch ready for a robust launch with plenty of games. Lots of promise in summer, holiday and beyond but right now for launch window there's precious little. This is something that has disappointed me slightly. I would have been down for Mario and Zelda at launch. It's not great that I'll basically be playing BOTW alone. And I'm not convinced about double dipping a month later on MK8.
@gatorboi352 "What I believe Nintendo is severely overestimating is the perceived value of the portable aspect of this console."
Well, since the get go, sometime last summer, I assumed the point of having a hyrbid was making it sell as a handheld in Japan, where the deader than Wii U Vita still sells, and a home console in the west, where the X1 still sells even though that never stood a chance in Japan. So I don't think it's so much a matter of every person has to use it both ways, as it's 1 console and consumers get to choose if its a portable or home console. It will be used mostly as a portable in Japan, mostly as a home console in the west.
The problem of it being too expensive for a portable and too under-powered for a home, well them's the breaks.
And then of course there's software. Some games are better played in small bites on the go, some on a big screen tv. So any one person can choose based on what game they want to play. And supporting 1 platform, after the 3DS is done getting games, means more games for Switch from Nintnedo, they proved w/ Wii U and 3DS they can't handle 2 platforms.
So it's not so much everything to everybody, it's to each ones own. Could work. Maybe.
@thesilverbrick What about the pro controller? Wii virtual console made you use the classic controller for SNES and N64 games, so isn't it possible the pro controller may be required to play GameCube VC?
Switch will be a success. Already ordered mine and can't wait.
@BranJ0 I can only hope that the pro controller has analog shoulder buttons. I'm really tired of the whole generation of GameCube software being absent on Nintendo consoles. Though now it won't seem so glaring, since it's unlikely that Wii and Wii U games will be downloadable on this console, given the hardware setup.
@gatorboi352 perhaps not in the west where home gaming is king but in Japan people will appreciate more the portable factor.
@Xaessya Do you know if the Switch comes w/ the "Grip"? If so, that $299 = $90 dock, $80 Joycons and $30 Grip = $200, meaning the Switch tablet itself is only worth $100. Seems like Nintendo put it's money in the wrong spot.
@ULTRA-64 Pretty much, Mario could be big at Christmas, but where's Pikmn 4, that Miyamoto said was "almost complete" way back in Sept 2015? Once the dust settles its back to wondering if Pikmin 3DS is indeed Pikmin 4, b/c they never denied it. Always something.
I'll keep my 'kiddy' designed 3DS with its lovely pixelated screen and stay away from this overpriced monstrosity, thank you.
@ottospooky BOTW is 49.99 at smyths toys. Pays to look around. They have Mario Kart 8 deluxe listed as 39.99 too
@Kmno problem for Nintendo is that the Japanese market is like a 10th the size of the western market.
Oh boy, if it is heavier than the gamepad cue the complaints about the weight.
@gatorboi352 I know but they are still very much a japanese company. Now setting that aside I don't see a problem with the concept of portability and why it is so frowned upon here in the west.
Did you guys get a chance to see the cartridge and microsd slots?
I ask because if the microSD is housed like the game cartridge, it would be even easier to switch out internal storage.
@Grawlog I just went over all of that in another thread here, funny timing
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/01/soapbox_the_switch_presentation_was_good_but_not_perfect
As to answer your question, um, I don't know, sorry.
This should have been a straight up handheld. As it isn't Nintendo are making a huge mistake marketing this as a home console.
@Kmno Ah, but see Sony is also a Japanese company. They westernized however and are now the market leader.
Nintendo is kinda dropping the ball on their pricing. Not so much on the console itself, but the games and controllers. $70 for a Pro Controller and $50 for a Joy-Con? $50 for 1-2 Switch and $60 for Arms? Those are major barriers. What makes them think people will pay the same price for something like Arms as Zelda?
Thank heavens all those "It is as powerful as the PS4" people have gone away. Hopefully never to come back again.
The other reality is that this is going to be an uphill battle for Nintendo when the fanb sunglasses are taken off.
I wish them all the best and by preordering my support.
@kobashi100
I fully expect Nintendo to some day remove the dock and HDMI cable from the Switch and sell that package at a significantly reduced price sometime in the next 2-3 years. Eventually, Nintendo is going to have to go after the handheld/mobile audience with a cheaper product.
Even without the dock, the Switch could still be played in "tabletop" and "handheld" mode, so it's not like it completely loses out on its hybrid approach.
I don't think I'll be bothering with the Switch. £280 (without a game) is way too expensive. I have a Wii U and will probably get BotW on that, but then I'm done with Nintendo; there are far too many decent games due on PS4 that are clamouring for my money (Mass Effect Andromeda, Torment: Tides of Numenara, Persona 5, FF7 remake...) And the sad thing is all those 4 together will cost less than the Switch. I can't see why anyone with a Wii U and a second console for their 3rd party games would bother with the Switch until at least Mario Oddysey is released?
@gatorboi352 yup no one wants it cause of portability of course besides every person I've talked to about dark souls or skyrim being on a tablet
@rjejr well the 'new pikmin' game being the 3ds version was my worst Nintendo fear over this saga of a game drought. It has to be the most delayed Nintendo franchise!?! (Article idea Nintendo life?😉)
The whole thing has me so confused and I'm the sort of geek that always buys into their hype, I don't know what I'm supposed to be excited about here tbh? The games aren't for me except Mario and the overpriced accessory options are going to inflate the price allot. I'm going to watch the full presentation soon as I've been working so just read up so far. Maybe seeing it run will get me going more!?!
@rjejr The lack of varied bundles for the Switch is huge mistake on Nintendo's part.
@shinpaku k yeah sure thing. I guess we'll wait and see how the sales numbers perform for this then, with all those big talkers lol
@gatorboi352 that I know, but on the otherside Sony went to the pooper after getting so westernized, not taking into account the PS brand.
Looks like Wii U may have been Nintendo's Saturn, and Switch will be their Dreamcast. RIP Nintendo
My lingering question you guys could probably answer: Did the system's screen look better quality-wise to the gamepad's screen? The off tv play on Wii U was always kind of blurry and washed out. Hopefully this is crisper!
@rjejr That is my only gripe with all the announcements, 1,2 Switch should have been a pack-in, even if only digital. I don't see many people buying it solo, it would have been a great way so that you have a playable system with a single purchase, just like the Wii was.
@ULTRA-64 OH NO! If you haven't watched it yet don't watch it now, it's a horrible hour of a mess. Amatuer hour. Mykids are watching it now - we always rewatch Directs together when they get home from school - but I refuse to rewatch this. If you can find it on line watch the last 3 minutes. Better yet go find the zelda trailer, it was awesome. And maybe a Mario trailer. Besides that? XC2. But don't watch the whole hour unless maybe you are unwinding after work w/ a beer or 3. I can't imagine that hour talking anybody into a Switch purchase. Probably cost them a few pre-orders.
@invictus4000 the screen is high quality. Not like that Fisher Price toy Wii U gamepad
@Kmno well, yeah. When I say Sony I really just mean the PlayStation brand, which they've done wonders with.
Nice article. Gives some good feeling about the hardware.
@invictus4000 I have no special information but I'm guessing it's waaaay better due to the fact that there will be no compression for streaming going on.
@rjejr Switch is packed with a grip but I don't think it can plug in to charge. The $30 is a charging grip (battery? or just plug in, I'm not sure). The reason I pre-ordered one is because I figured without the extra joy cons hooked up to the Switch you'd want them charging without thinking too much about it. I'm starting to wonder though.
If the Switch has the same charging grip, it makes the idea of swinging my options towards a second Switch much more appealing. (And in fact, I've hovered over the pre-order button a couple times when they became — surprise — intermittently available throughout the day... on and off at the same source. Kinda weird.)
And, of course, the accessories have the big margins because they have to be so thin on the console. But you know that.
@ACrate81 more like Atari's Jaguar don't think it will be as good as the Dreamcast unfortunately. It would have been a decent handheld if it wasn't over priced but £279.99 + £59.99 for a game is ridiculous it's certainly not a home console or hybrid as the dock is just there for ease of use for connecting to tv and gaining power to increase cpu/gpu speed which could have been achieved by using a tv cable and ac adapter. Also the 3rd party support is severely lacking I think the only people that will buy this are hardcore Nintendo fans.
Everyone saying 1, 2, Switch (Fail) should have been a pack in game didn't see it in action on the Treehouse stream... To put it bluntly... it is not a game that Nintendo should want to be associated with it's name. It's an unbelievable embarrassment. Even porting Wii Sports Resort or Nintendo Land with an online mode as a pack-in game would have been an exceptionally superior alternative by comparison.
But look on the bright side. At least now we have plenty of memes, and video footage of Alex being taught how to vigorously milk various living organisms that include cows!
@wizzgamer Fair point; I had both a Dreamcast and a Jaguar, and whilst I fondly remember most of the games on the Dreamcast, I'd be hard pressed to tell you one I had on the Jaguar...
By pricing the games at £60 Ninty are putting themselves in the same market space as the PS4/Xbone. They'd be better to go for £30 a game and make themselves a value proposition, an alternative. How many copies of 1, 2, Switch do you envisage selling at £60? Tbh I doubt they'd shift them at £30...
@gatorboi352 if you discount flops like the Vita, yeah kinda. They market to "casuals" too, just a different kind, the ones which feel like the annual Fifa, CoD, and the like are like super hardcore titles, oh and also they have Netflix, "4K" and many other buzzwords which mostly go under-utilised because many of them frankly don't know how to use them.
People like us, which are more interested in a wide variety of games are no match in numbers to those consumers.
Is the lack of analogue triggers confirmed by a Nintendo rep or just an assumption on the author's part? Even if a trigger feels digital there could still be some give in the trigger that would allow for analogue.
@ACrste81 I agree 1 2 Switch should have probably been a pack in game as it shows off the joy cons there also selling Skyrim at £59.99 which is ridiculous as it is a straight port of a game from 2011 so it should be priced as a budget title around £19.99-£24.99.
@MetaRyan @thesilverbrick Someone will have to cull the info from the recording, but I'm pretty sure that during the Treehouse livestream, it was confirmed that the ZL and ZR shoulder triggers on the Joy-Cons are indeed analogue, while the L and R shoulder buttons are digital. Hard to find info on that right now, so that will be something to double check.
welp: https://twitter.com/BadMiiversePost/status/820013942261026819
@aaronsullivan I'd say go for the 2nd Switch, that's how insane those accessory prices are. $600 is a lot, way too much for my blood, but for $480 it's still a lot. I still think w/ those myriad of accessories they should be selling a $229 Switch w/o a dock or a grip for people who only want it as a portable. If we get 3 Switch we don't need 3 docks, we only have 2 TVs.
Of course if you don't need a dock, just an $80 set of Joycon for 2 player, well $380 is much less than $600. Can the Joycon be charged via cable or do they have to be attached to the tablet or the Grip charger? I'm still trying to figure out what those 2 USB ports on the dock are for.
Good news, I did go ahead and buy a Dualshock 4 for my PS4, at $39.99 no tax on NewEgg it looked like such a bargain today. Also bought Rocket League for $17.99, seemed like a good deal as well. Switch is going to need a lot of good deals for all of their stuff, and not after 3 years like Lego City Undercover. Skyrim will be $9.99 on X1/PS4 by the time Switch gets it.
This is going to be crazy. Each joycon has its own transceiver, L-ion battery.
This must communicate with the tablet, and also not get messed up when there are eight other tablets hooked up via Wi-Fi and all their small transceivers.
I feel like that this is going to be a technological nightmare when it comes to service and repair.
@gatorboi352 Thanks for the Miiverse is dead link. I thought they really killed it long ago when they changed the format.
Bigger question, are Miis dead? Miis are ugly and outdated, but I like them in Mario Kart, and I think they would work in ARMS. I'd like to see them stick around.
@rjejr I beg to differ. I greatly enjoyed the presentation. Sure it was a little bit dull at times, but it was better than most live E3 presentations I've seen. I really liked the style that they went with as well. The snapping transition when switching speakers, though kind of campy, was still cool. The videos in between introducing certain games and the joycons really reminded me of the Wii advertising. I lovely blend of western and Japanese style.
As for convincing me to buy, well it was never a question so I guess that didn't matter...
@ACrate81 I am worried that Nintendo will shut off the online play in support of the Wii U early just to piss off its loyal customers. Thereby trying to force me to buy a switch.
Happy I have my Wii U and 3DS XL.
The Switch is just not for me. Maybe next time Nintendo, if there is a next time.
@gatorboi352 Though I liked Miiverse and I am sad to see it go, I will be ok without it (still think it seems unreasonable, but whatever).
But Streetpass?! They better change their minds on that one! I...I...I don't know what I'll do without Streetpass.
@gatorboi352 If you are right, I have a feeling its fate will be sealed. Why else would someone choose it over a PS4, unless they have an existing loyalty to Nintendo?
@Danrenfroe2016 I just traded in my copy of Splatoon for exactly that reason, before it becomes worthless.
Amazon gave me $25
@rjejr just the latest in a along line of baffling Nintendo decisions. Like, after everything it took internally to make Miiverse a thing, one generation in they just dump it? So puzzling.
More of them just throwing darts at a wall and seeing what sticks. I guess they felt Miiverse didn't stick.
I can't help they missed the boat by not releasing a screen/joycon/USB cable/16gb bundle for £170.
Snipperclips for Switch looks awesome by the way:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phs1pDpCYL8
@Danrenfroe2016 funny you should mention the technical and repair issues; I had a problem with my Wii U gamepad early December whereby the screen got stuck and wouldn't recognise any input. I tried phoning Nintendo customer service, and after waiting in a queue for 20 minutes on 3 separate occasions without getting through, I emailed them asking about a repair, and pointing out it was fairly urgent as my Son was getting some games for Xmas and wanted to be able to play them. I heard nothing back from Nintendo and it was looking like I might need to buy a new Wii U just to get the pad... In the end, I found an independent repairer that did the job for a reasonable £40 and we had the pad back in time for Xmas. Early January Nintendo finally emailled back suggesting that I might want to send them the pad for a repair assessment, and that a repair was likely to cost £80... Anyway the point I'm trying to make is, if the Wii U only has the console and gamepad to go wrong, imagine the inconvenience and hassle of having a dock, two joycons and a tablet to go wrong, not to mention the cost of repairs if they're out of warranty...
I believe this console will fail.
Sad to see how such a considerably positive (p)review is once again tainted by so much hate and negativity...
Apparently it takes a hands-on to get convinced, because just watching it seems to cause only whiny drivel and lamentations. I guess it takes too much effort to listen to people that have actually tried the hardware out and consider the possibility that it could actually be good. But no, let's focus on all the things that weren't good and form an opinion based upon plain text and video material instead of actually waiting to try it out for yourself.
Just imagine the horror if you find yourself coming to the exact same positive conclusion as the NLife team; how would you ever be able to recover from that shock? NÃ h, better stay negative, so much easier...
And for such an insignificant thing as a hobby. Better get your underwear in a knot about stuff that is actually important, like having a moron for a president of a part of the globe that is for all intents and purposes the world's leading nation...
#goldenshowers
@rjejr
Comes with dock, grip, 2 joycons, 2 wrist strap thingies. Oh and type c charger so you can charge undocked (plus ac adapter, hdmi etc)
Don't get why people are complaining about the price, my white xbox one cost £329 with sunset overdrive, and if the switch is at least equal to the xbone paying £280+£40 for a game seems pretty normal to me for a new console. I guess some people want to be super cheap.
Personally I am excited. The two color SKU have me hoping that in time Nintendo will pull a few IP branded Joy Cons out of the design bag. I would love to have to green Luigi joycons. I am pretty impressed with the amount of tech going into the system as a whole. Even adding the nfc reader into the Pro is a very neat design even if it likely added to the price. The screen looks sharp and crisp, yet the system is still small enough to fit in my purse or bookbag. I think the games shown on offer give an adequate preview of the system's power. Bethesda is pretty whiny as a dev about power and if they are willing to port Skyrim I am not very worried about future parity.
I have a few nit-picks about the Switch, but the games look awesome and that's all I care about.
If you're not buying it and are just going to complain about it for the next 5+ years, here's an idea. Don't waste everyone's time.
still no analogue triggers? sigh.
Well, here's my own thoughts on the system based on what I've seen and heard thus far:
http://www.inceptional.com/2017/01/13/my-thoughts-on-nintendo-switch-and-the-jan-13th-presentation/
I'd definitely like to get my hands on it though and see what I think after that.
Things like absurd accessory pricing and a lack of launch games are definite stumbling blocks, but I remain optimistic that Nintendo will pull through with this device. After all, now that the 3DS' lifespan is nearing its end, they can't afford to sit back and let it fail like the Wii U.
If I was sensible, I'd wait for a year and nab the console for a lower price, but I really, really want this device in my life.
"we have other concerns for other articles, relating to price, launch line-up and so on"
"Can. Not. Wait to read those"
What a Moby
Any Aussies here? I heard the Switch is $470 in Australia, way more expensive than the PS4.
If true that is madness.
My goodness, people here draw such insane conclusions. Yeah, the presentation could have definitely been a lot better, for sure. We don't know much about a lot of things, and they focused too much on stuff that doesn't really matter that much, like Arms. The fact of the matter is that the presentation really doesn't matter, aside from first impressions. What matters is the games and the hardware. Hardware looks solid, games...from what we saw look pretty good. It's hard to say, since they barely showed us anything in regard to the games, and nothing about the virtual console, but rest assured games will come. They couldn't show everything with E3 coming in June. If the full lineup of games in the first year ends up sucking, then yeah, the system might not pull through. If it doesn't suck, we could still have a great system on our hands, bad presentation or not. As had been the case for a long time with the Switch, we just need to wait and see. It's far too early to draw conclusions.
The most common complaint about the Wii U: an obligatory second screen that was underused/unjustified.
And what do we get with the joy cons? HD Rumble, put to such compelling experiences as counting marbles in a bag and playing quick draw. Which you have to buy separately.
SMH.
What have they been doing for all this time?
@Syrek24 I have to say I hope you are right.
I'm watching the response and it is a bit a of a Wii U Deja Vu.
E3 is closing in on the horizon. If they show a better lineup there, I'll bite.
Played all Nintendo Consoles, own all of them still. Got a Wii U at launch, and I didn't like any new and exclusive Switch game they showed. Super Mario Odyssey being a particular low point in my opinion.
@invictus4000 it's infinitely better than the GamePad screen
They need a games direct soon with some general direction of release dates and a couple announcements like Pokémon Stars. Save a few surprises for E3 though. Pokémon would get it selling faster then anything....full HD on the go and on your TV. $249.99 was probably the sweet spot too.....but by all reports it's pretty remarkable tech
@Dakt So right. I enjoyed what was announced because I didn't buy into all the rumors and kept my expectations fairly low. Now I just can't wait until March 3.
Do not like their pricing. I'm stuck with the equivalent of 400 USD as the price, and with Zelda it'll be more like 470. And their accessory pricing is just a complete joke. However, I actually loved the presentation.
Any news about Wii u pro con compatibility with NS?
@gatorboi352......dude your are always like the most cynical Nintendo fan........
I have to fully disagree on portable........and so do 60mil+ 3DS users and another 12mil with Vita.
You may not like portable gaming or feel a phone is sufficient and I get that but many gamers want portable gaming and phones/tablets are still not ideal gaming devices.
This Xmas Switch will be the only handheld in the market and as long as the library is filled in it will sell like mad.
Homestly, maybe you are over valuing home or TV based gaming? Word is that market is shrinkng but PS4/xb1 sales would not back that up.....I think there is still room for both and cool think is Switch gives us both in one device.
The line up of titles that are confirmed so far looks okayish as far as the number of them is concerned, but I'm pretty confident that there will be a few more announced in the next few weeks.
They can't have 80 games in development and only release so few, methinks...
I was pretty excited for the Switch after seeing the presentation. I thought 1 2 Switch looked like it could be a fun pack-in game and ARMS looked fun as well. But I also thought that ARMS should be part of a cheaper price point like Toads Treasure Tracker or something like that. Some of the features seemed pretty cool as well and there were quite a few games I definitely want to play.
Then I saw the Australian RRP this morning of $469.95 and now I'm not keen at all. They're going to have to take about AU$100 of that price before I even consider it. I can see the launch being like the 3DS where they're going to have to drop the price within 6months to a year.
@ThanosReXXX That's Nintendolife and much of the internet for you no positivity allowed
I think Switch looks great. All the negativity here is well, the Internet I suppose.
@thesewoodenideas
Mario Kart 8 is 49.99 at Smyths
http://metro.co.uk/2017/01/13/nintendo-switch-hands-on-verdict-too-little-too-early-6380163/
Above article is spot on how I feel. Great device, but a launch lineup worse than the Wii U's, and they want us to pay for online, which in the past has always been a weaker offering than on the other platforms.
It just doesn't inspire confidence.
I really felt Nintendo needed to do everything they could to make this a mass market device and win back some market share and confidence. They haven't.
@Wolfgabe True, that. Although it's not so much NLife itself but the "fans".
@BiasedSonyFan Yeah, guess you're right. And all in all, it's 23 titles confirmed so far, which is almost 2 a month. More than enough for most of us. And I'm pretty sure more announcements will follow. I'm still busy with my Wii U backlog anyways, so I couldn't care less either way...
just my 2 cents: lower the price of the switch for 60-70 euro.
Hmm, I've pre-ordered of course. But it's not going to sell to the casual audience, let's be honest, the price of the system is about €320 with no game. I know it can do portable too bit that doesn't matter to the casual at all. 250 tops and it would sell. But again those accessories are CRAZY. Prices. What are they thinking?
Either go all in with Sony and Microsoft or go 3rd party.
Usual 'I'm a fan of Nintendo. I buy everything Nintendo'. But, my god, prices guys, that's all that matters.
@gcunit
The response to the launch games from the media is very underwhelming, as it should be. It is bad.
I have just seen the prices of the accessories. Diabolical.
The internet is now turning against the Switch.
@gcunit Up til the (recent) past, the online was taken care of by Nintendo themselves, but now they have the experienced pros at DeNA to handle that for them, so I would say that it's fair to wait and see how that pans out instead of already judging them based on past grievances.
And since it was free, we could hardly complain. Quality comes at a cost, but a few bucks a month shouldn't be a problem for most of us, even if you don't have a lot of money to spare.
The presentation was a bit of a mess, but the Treehouse was solid and gave WAY more information on the games and the hardware, so I'm actually a bit more confident in them succeeding now. And we have one more Treehouse session to go, and more will probably be revealed in the weeks leading up to the release, and towards the E3. Kimishima said 80 titles in development, so that should contain something for everyone, at the very least...
@Hotfusion only the idiots, who unfortunately, are the majority of the online dwellers. Factually, the prices are just normal. Look at Xbox One or PS4 controllers/peripherals: also between $45 - $60 a piece, so not that much of a difference, really.
no zelda bundle with switch at launch, no included game for it, no lessons learned, storage joke, accessory prices high, i'm going to say this ceo wants money than more affordable accessory's, sorry not near launch day buy, ony xb2, fe warriors, maybe otho from sony, can get breath on wii u than dust for a change. maketing needs overhaul like blah blah lets get 5 mill for 300, maybe 1 m for high priced accessory , right man system with game makes sense, Zelda bundle switch with pro controllar 400 lets get 10 mill for 400 prints money only losing 30 dollars each but its zelda. we can get 5 mil for reasonbly price accessorys. 60
CEO i like 300 no games included, 80 joy con, joy in my wallet, 3.700 bil don't want, wants 150 mil now sounds good for investors not players, players will buy games at 60 so thats like 180 mil genius and give that guy a raise again.
needless to say not getting one any time soon after launch. and they could get a NewSwitch in 1 or 2 years of course needs all new stuff again.
Trying to wrangle with the cynicals is like a lone fireman with a single fire extinguisher trying to go up against a big house fire. Not going to waste too much of my time with this comment section.....
What I seen is fine and all but CLEARLY they did not show everything and could've done a better job with the first impression.
I suggest you guys wait un...... th.......(static noises)
@Xaessya With enough backlash, they have to give in to reducing those prices. Who do they think they are, Apple? XD
@gcunit I feel the same. It's coming out in march but seems there's not many games to play. I've waited long and now I have to wait another year for Mario. Nintendo should've released this Christmas 2017.
@ULTRA-64 You and me both, Ult. It'll likely be Zelda for the U and a decent wait for the Switch. I'll no doubt buy one eventually, but they need a mess of good games first.
Been a fan for decades, but the Big N has become pretty tonedeaf and intransigent.
@gcunit yeah that article pretty much nails it
@Al_Godoy
I don't think so.
It's too early to say Switch will Failed like Wii U.
Better wait and see after Switch released.
@mikegamer
Apple :/
@ThanosReXXX
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, that doesn't make them all idiots but I get your point.
The major complaints are the games. If you think that is a great launch lineup you need to .. whatever.
The major launch game is Zelda and that's on the WiiU. No need to get a Switch until Christmas when I am betting the price will drop drastically like it did with the 3DS after its launch. They can't afford to keep the price high like they did with the WiiU after its poor launch.
As for accessories you gotta be joking. A standard XboxOne controller is £35 and a PS4 £40. The Pro controller is £70.
Yeah there is a lot of tech in it but it is twice the cost of a XboxOne controller. That piece of plastic steering wheel is £30.
Polygon, The Verge and others consider the accessories prices to be a ridiculous joke. They are idiots too I suppose.
@ThanosReXXX
Don't worry. There are some people keep positive thinking about Switch despite of some flaws. Switch maybe a little bit overpriced at first but i'm sure Nintendo will cut the price eventually. Let's spread out Positive Aura to heal those complainers.
@Link777_ Really?
I love Nintendo but I'm not blind. And I will get it, maybe in the Holidays, or if I can get a really good bargain.
@gatorboi352 are you salty because there's no poo cod on it? Nintendo is Nintendo if you want the clones/mainstream like that then there are other consoles and pc
@gcunit i think that is why there's a trial til fall so people will know if it's worth paying for online
@Hotfusion No, I don't think it's a great line-up, I'm a realist, not wearing any pink shades. But the games individually are great, for the most part, and some of the third party announcements inspire hopeful feelings for the future.
The presentation was a bit of a mess, and some of the translators should be fired, but the games was what mattered to me, not so much how they were presented. And after having watched the Treehouse with a more in-depth look at quite a few of these games, and having read the first hands-on review of the NLife crew, I can only be positively inclined. Cautiously so, but positive nonetheless...
And opinions are everyone's right, but everybody jumping on the same bandwagon or beating the same dead horse isn't. Not by a long shot. Just because people thought that the price was going to be as rumored and it turned out that wasn't true, a whole hell of a lot of them were outright furious, but for no reason, because that price point was never more than a rumor, and it should have been taken as such, instead of people now accusing Nintendo of making the Switch too expensive...
That's just completely crazy.
@rjejr
I think Pikmin 4 and Pokémon Stars are coming this year.
Keep in mind e3 is just 90 days after Switch launch. And they can't not have anything to show at E3. They probably just gave us the highlights of the games coming and still have some surprises waiting to announce at E3. Remember when Wii U launched- we had no idea all the games that were in development and on the way until after the system released. This will be no different.
What Nintendo needs is an adaptor to be able to plug/play 3DS games into switch.
Nintendo should have made a second slot for 3ds games. I guess either the nature of switch/Android vs. whatever 3ds is running on are incompatible or they didn't want to kill 3ds hardware so obviously.
@KilleyMC original 3ds was $250 but was price cut down to $170 honestly just for a 3D gimmick you end up paying a ton for a relatively weak system and then the new 3ds is $200 ($250 XL) again not a huge improvement in tech but it's still expensive. The Wii U is still $250 and you think the switch is expensive at $300 even though it's more powerful than a Wii U and is portable?
@ThanosReXXX Are you kidding? Same prices for the controls?
How can you compare a dualshock at 45 with a 60 Switch pro controller? Factor in that you need to buy 2 or 3.
@Hotfusion Oh, and Polygon ARE idiots...
The peripheral prices are more or less the same as on the other two consoles, and the Joy-Cons contain far more tech inside of them than an Xbox One and PS4 controller combined, so they are priced accordingly. Are they cheap? No, they aren't, but tech comes at a cost, and this is the current rate it's going for. Simple as that. And most of us will only need that pro controller, seeing as you already have two Joy-Cons in the bundle, so unless you lose or break them, you don't need any extra ones...
@maceng
Where I live an Xbox One or PS4 controller is $75. There are wired 3rd party controllers that sell for $35 but not official ones.
I'm not very excited by the launch lineup, but the Joy-cons look awesome.
@maceng I was talking about on average. Xbox One controllers are also $60, so modern day controllers are almost always in that price range between $40 - $60.
And the Switch controllers contain more tech/functionality so that actually warrants them to be slightly more expensive.
@Setery10 As it should be. Remember that they were selling a New 3DS for a 100 bucks back in Black Friday. Also, remember how the Wii went from 250 to a 150 fairly quickly.
But yes, you are buying a console that also acts like a handheld. If Nintendo can only stress this point hard enough, then yes, it is worth it. So far they haven't.
@gatorboi352 You need to go away.
Now before you get mad at what I just said, you should know that I'm not trying to be mean; it's just that you annoy me, and I'm sure that you annoy a lot of the other readers here.
I guess I owe you an explanation. We'll, everything you say seems to have a forced negative undertone. Don't get me wrong, I understand that you have every right to an opinion, but you kind of come off as a troll. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you're just hard to satisfy. If that's the case, disregard what I said.
Guess I won't be selling my Wii U just yet then.
@ThanosReXXX I'll give you that. When they showed what they could do I was really impressed. Still, for the average Joe it means squat. Unless Nintendo really shows everyone what they can do.
Look, I like the Switch. A lot. Specially since I'm a handheld kind of guy, but sadly, I feel that the console isn't priced properly (at 250 or less), nor the controls (set of joycons at 60, one joycon at 40, pro controller at 50) and the games (1, 2 switch at 50, really!!?).
Sorry, I've been buying consoles for the last 36 years, with my own money, and I see that the Switch will fail. Badly. I expect no more than 25 million sold, unless they come around, do a 3DS-like price cut and develop a robust game library to keep us busy.
@maceng 25 million sold will be the least number, especially since this merges home and handheld, but even if it only hits that number, it will already have done better than two other Nintendo consoles, and that in times when it's harder to sell a dedicated system.
But the Switch will NOT fail, mark my words. Once the initial and unjustified negativity dies off, it will sell more than well enough and it will gain traction, especially with the second wave of games yet to come, a total of 80 now in production, and who knows what third parties still have in store for us?
And have you watched all the Treehouse sessions today? If not, give them a go and find out more about all the games they showed yesterday. I personally found it worth my while and I'm now more positive than I was, might do the same for you too...
@BiasedSonyFan I know, right?
@ThanosReXXX Welcome to the internet where all logic and common sense goes to die
@maceng
You do make good points with the switch pro control, (even here in the uk £60 is nuts) and the DOL games are very meh except LoZ, but you have to remember it is still a new console (also ninty still refuse to sell consoles at a loss) and although it may not be the most powerful it just needs to be powerful enough e.g. PS2 vs original xbox to get the right games on it. Also the switch will likely sell purely on pokemon alone when that's announced so it may not fail at all. I do agree that a launch switch isn't really worth it too much as it doesn't even have mariokart8 on it and that game is already finished (its just a port) but by christmas and after E3 it will likely pick up some pace.
Pokemon is a $58 billion dollar IP btw thats more than mario by nearly $30 billion
More info to consider:
The paid subscription will allow you to download a SNES or NES game which you can play during the month you downloaded the game. After that, the game vanishes from your account, even if you are still subscribed.
No more Miiverse (confirmed) and no Streetpassing from the Switch.
Zelda will take about 14GB of the included 32GB internal memory, so we will be left with how much, 10GB, 12GB?
ARMS (which I really liked) will need a set of extra joycons from the get-go for co-op playing, adding to the cost. Hope we see a 100 bucks bundle for a set of joycons and the game.
@Wolfgabe Yeah, I know. Sometimes I ask myself why I even bother to try...
@Zapazoid Why wouldn't I? If I that skill ceiling is to be believed, and say I play it, oh, 1/10 of the time I played Splatoon, that's over 100 hours. How long is BotW? Most Zeldas are under 30 hours. That's just one way to determine value.
1-2 Switch being anything more than free is beyond me just from a marketing standpoint of how easy it seems to be to get literally anyone to play Switch for a few minutes ala RPS, but again - and I think the price is preposterous - how do you put a value on something you could legitimately bust out to play something with anyone, literally anywhere, for the lifetime of the machine? That's just seems so awesome to me.
(Sidebet: "12S' future free Ambassador title after the panic price drop if Splatoon 2 doesn't move systems)
@CircuitWrangler3 definitely not here to troll but thanks for the reply
@maceng Zelda will take up ZERO GB, seeing as it is on cartridge and far as we know, it has no mandatory extra installs, so the loss of space only counts for the saps that are dumb enough to buy the digital version.
The physical version is always superior and guarantees you more ownership too, so the only reason to go with digital would be a moderate amount of additional comfort, whereas if you'd buy a carry case/pouch, you could easily take up to twelve games with you, along with the console itself.
And you could always buy that 256GB Micro SD card, all storage issues gone, just like that...
PSVR at the very least bundled with LOTS of demos to play with... Switch comes with nothing. And there's only Zelda and 1,2 Switch from Nintendo at launch. There's not much to play... so disappointing. A PS4 Slim with 500gb cost less than Switch with 32gb, this is crazy pricing for people who play games on TV, not to mention the graphics/processing speed...
@JaxonH Hey Jax, was wondering where you'd been keeping yourself.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about what wasn't shown, still have the whole console's life left. My kid does think Pokemon Stars will be on 3DS though, $299 is still too expensive for parents to start replacing all of those $99 and $79 2DS. They'll need a Switch Mini before they can put a kids game on there. I could see them going as far as making a Mini w/ the Joycons permanently connected, basically a New 2DS. That's what parents want, no loose parts to loose when they take it to school. Maybe 2019. So Pokemon Stars will have to be on 3DS, Gen 8 on Switch. Don't worry, you'll get your MH game though, then well never hear from you again.
Best part about today, that extremely overpriced $90 dock and slightly overpriced $70 Pro convinced me to buy a 2nd Dualshock for my PS4 so now I can play w/ my kid. $40 on Newegg, no tax, free shipping, I should have it tomorrow in time for his birthday. So thanks Nintendo, you showed me how good a $40 controller can be.
@ThanosReXXX For me,I need to buy most of my games digitally as it's the cheapest way for me to get them.I bought the majority of my Wii U games through various website that sell digital codes,often up to 30% cheaper than on the Eshop and comparable with Amazon prices.If I order from Amazon,I have to wait up to 2 weeks for delivery,pay shipping costs to Thailand and then custom taxes on top so that's not really the cheapest option.I could have them sent to my parents and have them send them over but I've had mail go missing in the past so prefer not to take the risk.I now have a game shop near me that I'll be picking my Switch up from,I didn't have that option before.But due to the poor exchange of the pound to baht,I'll be paying around 30% more than the official UK price.I'm not quite sure yet how I'll approach my Switch purchases.i think I'll buy the big online games that I play frequently and the major 1st party games digitally,a 256gb card plus the 32gb on board should cover those and all my Eshop/VC purchases with plenty to spare.Then I'll buy everything else physically.3rd party games usually come down in price fairly quick,so I don't mind waiting for them to be shipped over and paying the extra.
@rjejr
That PS4 controller was $60 when it launched though. And still is, as you can see here
upload image online
You got it for less than MSRP, which is good but it's important to realize that that's not the MSRP. Once Switch releases, there will be similar discounts. You couldn't find a PS4 controller that cheap when PS4 launched, and it stands to reason you're not going to get Switch controllers less than MSRP at launch either.
Not to say I like $70 for a Pro controller, but that's what I paid for both of my Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth, and this Switch Pro controller looks like it's way more awesome and packed with way more technology for the same price.
But yeah with that dock price, I would never buy an extra dock. So they can overcharge all they want to for it because I'm just not going to buy an extra.
Oh, I saw GameStop is running trade in specials. Can lock in a Switch preorder and get $150 credit with a New 3DS XL. Can get $130 for an old model XL. That's... surprisingly generous coming from GameStop, and practically cuts the cost of the system in half. I preordered 4 Switches (1 from Walmart, 3 from BestBuy, all black except one red/blue). I'm gonna cancel 2 of them, if no one I know needs one, and maybe use the 2nd for accessories and have an extra Switch to take on the go just to ensure I don't scratch my main one.
The presentation was, to me, better than it could have been. I don't like the price of the unit/console itself, or + even just one accessory. Nintendo needs to properly convey, to gamers that don't actively follow gaming information the tech, & functionality possibilities. I'm interested in the NS. I don't believe in setting expectations "to the moon". Right now, my interest could fall apart, or it could get even stronger, though my feelings are positive. Again, I'm interested in the system.
"I feel that the console isn't priced properly (at 250 or less), nor the controls (set of joycons at 60, one joycon at 40, pro controller at 50)"
I'm willing to bet that you say that because you know so little about the Switch's inner components. And much of the gadgets in its Joy-Cons surpass the gadgets used by the competition's standard controllers, not to mention that there's more versatility and functionality. You get what you pay for.
"1, 2 switch at 50, really!!?."
Yes, really. It may not be for you, but that doesn't have to mean that it doesn't have sales potential, because you see, you don't speak for every gamer. I remember being self centered enough to perceive that Wii Sports wouldn't sell much after the Wii launched. Soon enough, when that game started to sell like hotcakes, I discovered that the gaming landscape was bigger than gamers like me, much bigger. Believe me, those guys at Nintendo know what they're doing.
"I see that the Switch will fail. Badly. I expect no more than 25 million sold, unless they come around, do a 3DS-like price cut and develop a robust game library to keep us busy."
All they'd need is the games. Dude, seriously $299 is not expensive for a brand new next gen console. Especially if it will give us a good five years. For goodness sake, the PS4 Pro is $400 (the Scorpio may cost even more) and technically isn't a new console! Some of the peripherals could use a price cut though, although I do understand why they are a bit costly.
@Honelith You sure that's a good idea? 🤔 There's no telling how long this thing's going to be scarce. And you'll want to sell your Wiiu while it still stands at a good value.😉
@JaxonH "and maybe use the 2nd for accessories"
Not sure how many of my posts you've come across today but I had a long conversation w/ some of the guys about the accessory prices, I think I nearly convinced Aaron Sullivan to buy a 2nd Switch b/c w/ an extra dock for his kids ($90), 2nd set of Joycons for multiplayer ($80), Con Grip ($30 or $15, we can't decide if the one Switch comes w/ is the charger or not) and a set of straps for his kids for the Joycon ($8x2=$16) it will cost him about $200 in accessories, or he can have a 2nd Switch for $300. I think he may skip the dock.
Wouldn't surprise me if you kept the 2nd, you'll find some use for it, there are a lot of parts in that box. You can play on 1 while the other charges every 2-6 hours. Though maybe get 1 now and wait for the SSBComplete or SMO bundle at Christmas? Or a MH bundle, you know you'll want one of those. Man, a Switch in that shiny silver MH model, that would be something.
Too bad Switch doesn't play 3DS carts on the big screen like a Gamecube Gameboy player, NOBODY would be complaining about the price if it played 3DS carts both on the go and on the TV. How w/ only 1 screen I have no idea, but it's the thought that counts.
Good luck getting whatever you decide on, whenever you decide on getting it. We've already decided it will be awhile, maybe Christmas 2018, we'll see how it goes.
@Xaessya DANG. I hope the pro controller is not $70. I know they add some motion sensing tech in it, but I don't think it's worth that much. I perceive ps3 $50 controllers as too expensive as is. What is the dock set for $90? I thought the dock was supposed to be inexpensive/lightweight (in terms of tech and hence, cheap)?
@DeltaPeng
Ya, controllers now are expensive. I paid $70 for my new Xbox One Controller, and $65 for my PS4 controller. I was actually planning on getting a Pro Controller, but the more I think about it the more I question whether I'll even need one. I think people are just conditioned to believe "that's a normal controller, that's how it's supposed to look, and anything that doesn't look like that I don't want to use"
But if you really stop and analyze the Joycons, they're gonna do everything the Pro Controller can do, and more. They'll have that IR technology that can distinguish shapes and judge distance, plus they'll be more comfortable to hold and use. Not attached to that grip, but just raw Joycon. One in each hand.
I'd say at least consider that. Or try it out first and then decide. It may save you some money, and you may end up preferring it
@rjejr
I believe the grip that doesn't charge is made by PowerA. The Comfort Grip. While the one that charges is the one Nintendo makes. Pretty sure cause I was wondering that myself.
Also, it comes with the straps too. Even if you buy a 2nd set of Joycons, it comes with the grey straps (shows them on the packaging box anyways)
@Xaessya
they're banking on you losing joycon all day long when you take it to the dog park and ignore Fido.
Shareholders, rejoice! Nintendo will be in the black thanks to replacement joycon sales!
@JaxonH The dualshock 4 usually retails between 40 and 48 bucks. Look it up at Amazon.
Also, Nintendo controls rarely come down in price. Very rarely. Two weeks ago I was looking to buy a Pro controller: retail is 50, it was at 47.
Xbox One and PS4 accessories go down in price just after 6 months in the market.
Look at the WiiU: still retailing for 350 (at least just before the presentation). That's nuts!
At least we can agree that, yes, controls could be a smidgen less expensive.
Also, I have really big hands so the joycons are not going to be comfortable to use (there is a pic by pic comparison between Wii controllers and Switch's down ta IGN). They are really small (like 67% the size of a motion Wii controller).
@maceng
I know what you can get them for on amazon. Read post #156 I addressed this. You can get it below MSRP on Amazon because the system has been out for several years now, in fact this is in Year 4 we're in. But it wasn't $12 less than MSRP when it launched. That took years to happen and even now it's just 12 bucks cheaper, even in Year 4. When it's summer 2020, I'm sure you can get a Switch Pro controller a tad cheaper too.
Not to say I don't think the accessories arent too expensive. Cause I do. But it's not exactly fair to compare controllers that have been on the market for years to a brand new console controller that obviously is not going to be discounted on day 1.
But about those Joycon, I did actually notice how small they are but even the biggest hands in the world should still be able to use them just fine. I mean it's not like they're the size of a grape or anything lol. I'm not saying I know you better than you do, maybe they will be too small, butt I think there's a difference between being small-ER than we're accustomed to, and actually being too small to function as expected.
Unless you're talking about holding them sideways. That looks a little cramped even for me and I don't have big hands
Unexpectedly bummed out at the digital shoulder pad buttons. Means no effective racing games (other than mariokart) can exist on the system. I understand it may be hard to implement, but a bit of a bummer.
@JaxonH: "Not attached to that grip, but just raw Joycon. One in each hand." - I'm the kind of gamer, who can have his interest piqued, by video demonstrations, like the presentation. But, once I get the actual controller in my hands, then I know for certain whether I like it, or not. I'm really interested in getting my hands on those Joycons, to try how they feel, both connected to, & disconnected from the NS. Right now, I image they will be comfortable for me.
@Capt_N
Oh for sure. Controllers are something you have to try to truly judge.
I used to dismiss the STEAM controller, til I got a PC and discovered it's pure genius. I do mean pure genious. I'm playing games people told me would never work with a controller, like Torchlight 2 and Dragon Age Origins on PC, and it's far better than a controller could ever offer.
I really like the Joycons though. The ultimate evolution of the controller it seems. They just look amazing. I may frame one and pasted it on my walls 😆
@JaxonH May I ask how the Steam controller utilizes the haptic feedback? Just wondering what to expect from the JoyCons in that regard. Also, how often does it get used in games?
Come on guys, nothing about the Joycon in the Grip controller? I wanted to know how that feels.
@Frank-The-Tank I heard someone say it was comfortable. That's all I've got.
@KirbyTheVampire
It's kind of hard to explain without trying it. It's little micro vibrations and soft "clicks" that you can audibly hear along with it.
STEAM controller is super customizable. Can adjust the haptic feedback levels for all buttons and touch pads. There's seriously like 200 adjustments you can make in the config, all the super technical stuff and correction factors for the Radial arc of your thumb when you swipe across to correct it to a straight line, it's absolutely amazing.
But anyways, The steam controller is nowhere near the level of advanced technology these joycons will have, of that I'm sure. Which is why am anxious to experience them for myself and it may take a bit for a game to truly utilize it, but that's OK we've got a long generation ahead of us.
@JaxonH
Nice, man. I'm really intrigued by the whole haptic feedback thing. I actually just noticed that Gamexplain uploaded a video about their hands-on impressions of the Switch, so I'm gonna check that out and see if they got to try out that aspect of the JoyCons. Here's a link if anyone's interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SsvZXLwnEY
I'm pretty pumped for this, man. It's honestly pretty much everything I was expecting (wasn't expecting such pricey accessories though), and everything I was hoping for. Looking forward to another generation of new Nintendo games, especially since I haven't owned a Nintendo system since the Wii, and I've never owned one of their handhelds, or any handheld in general.
I must have missed it somewhere. Was it confirmed that the tablet screen is 720p? I've only seen rumors so far and it wasn't mentioned in the presentation.
@gatorboi352 Really? Aren't you effectively saying that it's a slightly more powerful Wii U without a second screen? Portability is exactly why I'm buying it.
@JaxonH: "STEAM controller is super customizable." - I love it, when a controller is such. It gives a controller a level of ergonomics personalization.
@KirbyTheVampire: Thanks for the link. I like hearing multiple sources give their opinions for an idea, before I have an opportunity myself, to hands-on those Joycons.
@Everyone-Else: Just a month, & a 1/2, then your local game store will have those new NS kiosks. haha
@Crillan
Yup
720p
capacitive multi touch
region free
256gb microSD officially supported
@Miss_Dark 330€ is way to high, as a wiiu owner. I'll play zelda on it and wait for the switch.
While the hardware looks great, the price of the accessories and games is high to very high. And the day 1 games look pretty poor apart from Zelda and 1, 2 Switch really should be bundled. It seems a very similar situation to Wii U - a high price and uninspiring day one games.
Now I feel sad I can't purchase it day 1 lol. Great article, gave me a lot of what to think about. My hands are small and thin so N3DS XL never felt uncomfortable, but it's good to hear the joy cons will fit in hands of any shape and size.
I really love the idea of using the joy cons to play two player on the go, that is fantastic. My major concern is internal storage, if we assume a AAA game is say 6 to 10GB then that s a few games plus maybe a few indies on there. You WILL have to shell out for another SD card and if you want anything meaningful like 256GB then that could be another £100. It's expensive but that's partly due to the weak pound, I'm on the fence as to whether I will get one we'll see.
It's very worrying for Nintendo that a site dedicated to Nintendo! Mostly visited by Nintendo fans, has so much negativity in the comments section. I don't remember this much negativity from the fan base before the wii u. It seems to me that Nintendo have lost half of their fans overnight.
I'm on the fence about Switch TBH, it's pricey like all new hardware, first-party controllers are expensive, no news there, the big-name games look great, but it's the battery life that really gives me pause...
2.5 to 6 hours, with what i know of marketing speak, means that with any decent game (Not the inevitable "Sudoku classics DX"-game), it will be far closer to the 2.5 than the 6 hours, which is quite honestly abysmal for any portable device, the idea of the switch is awesome, but it's hard to push "Play games at home AND on the go!" when it's inevitably followed by a "Just hurry back home before the battery dies", and if you look at it as a portable, the games will get a price hike too (40-45 euros to 55-60, because when game price is concerned, Switch is suddenly 100% home console! :3 )
Well everyone can express their opinions whatsoever and get whiny and yeah, Nintendo's at faults here. Partly. But its still good start of a journey. If you guys thought it was a bit pricey, well don't buy now just wait for price drop or sales. Not enough games? Don't buy it now just wait wait and wait and oh if that time had come where you're satisfied with the libraries, you can buy it. You hate everything Nintendo? Whine a bit and just don't buy it. Easy
Its ok to be a wiener once in a while, but here's hoping everything's fine. Think of the people who just wanna have good fun playing games, it sure kills the mood guys.
@ThanosReXXX
My first point was the weak launch lineup. At least there we agree.
You then carried on ranting to me about stuff I didn't even mention so maybe you have me confused with someone else. Easily done.
My second point was the cost of the accessories.
You just don't get it do you.
The average consumer don't care about the tech in it. They see the price of the accessories and are further turned off from buying the system by it. That's what the publications are saying.
I am a Nintendo fanboy, proudly so and I want the Switch to succeed, but I am not gonna blindly defend and agree with everything they do like a brainless toad.
Edit: I by no means directly refer to you in my last statement.
Jesus, some people here will defend Nintendo no matter what stupid stunts they pull. The pricing of the accessories is a legitimate complaint, not everyone has money pouring out of their pockets. But yeah, we HATE Nintendo because we don't eat every little thing from the palm of their hand! How ungrateful of us.
@3MonthBeef "Regardless of what people are saying now the ultimate result is even people with far out criticisms will buy the console. Maybe not at launch, maybe not even during the holidays but they WILL buy one. Now what is important is software releases, quailty software mind you."
There are people buying WiiU now but it's not going to change its doom.
@OorWullie Well, in your case that's fair enough, but for most of us, the prices will be nearly the same for digital or physical versions.
The thing for me with digital, even if I would have to pay more, is that I'd still go for physical, because I don't trust any company to keep my downloads save or available in case I would ever have to download them again, and them being tied to your device like with the 3DS is also hardly a great thing.
@Hotfusion No, I did not confuse you with someone else. I only responded to your comments #114 and #126, so I honestly have no idea what you are talking about. I don't aimlessly rant. I was trying to make a point.
And I get it all right, but YOU don't. Like I have already said, prices for these controllers are by and large the same. Fortunately, some people like @JaxonH also know this, and come up with proof to show that.
And although I did mention it, it's not even so much about the tech inside, it's about whiny idiots that claim that Nintendo peripherals/controllers are more expensive than those of the competition, and that is just not the case, it's just biased prejudice, PERIOD.
Funny, I watched it with my 3 kids and the two little ones were bored by the series of men in suits. They only watched when the games came on - they loved seeing Splatoon 2, Mario and even the snatches Sonic. The oldest on is aged 10 and he was impressed by the RPGs, but the executives were utterly dull and occasionally cringe worthy. It felt like your uncle dancing at a wedding as he tried to be down with the kids. I can only assume the whole presentation was aimed at people other than those who might buy the system, ie the shareholders. And judging by how Nintendo's share price dipped afterwards, even they weren't impressed. It was a real disappointment after such a great advert in October.
@gatorboi352
I might not need the portability but I am married and need the off TV play for when she wants to binge on Netflix. 😀
@Boxmonkey Nope this is normal behaviour in here. A game could get delayed from the 8th to the 10th and you'd see 200 comments of non-stop crying.
@JaxonH Source? I've been following Switch every day and haven't seen or heard any verified specs. They mentioned the capacitive touch, but not the resolution, from what I've seen.
Question:
What is the point of the removable controllers? Wouldn't it be easier just to leave them on and use a separate controller when in console mode? I think it's over-engineered a bit... or is the screen usable without the controllers? I wonder if production is more expensive because of this functionality or less expensive because there are less parts...
Regarding portability it does not look like something that I would chuck in my bag. It needs a case or bag. I wouldn't take it out on a bus. I feel a bit that it will be underpowered for the living room and not mobile enough for on the road. Underpowered as in it will have less 3rd party games because of its limitations. So far not sold.
Wow no analog triggers in this day and age..........are you f'ing kidding me, For racing junkies this is a big no, I would have to buy a overpriced pro controller, that's one of the reasons I didn't buy a WiiU.
Talk about digging your own grave and throwing yourself in it, I mean you gave yourself the shovel and dug it, you haven't even waited for the public to throw you in it, you threw yourself in it.
Bye bye Nintendo DOA.
£280 price tag is too much, at that price it should come with a free game.
Only 32gb memory, should have been 500gb or at least 256gb.....make an effort Nintendo.
No launch line up.
3-6 hours battery.
No mention of VC.
No mention of how much the online service will cost.
The price of game is way too expensive.
The extra accessories are overpriced.
Didn't see much 3rd party support.
For a modern console they should at least compete with the big boys. It's like an amateur boxer going up against Mike Tyson or going into war against a tank, just armed with a stone................AGAIN MAKE A BLOODY EFFORT NINTENDO and stop mugging the paying public off.
Prediction is This will fail, like I predicted the WiiU would fail and it did.
Good bye Nintendo my gaming memories with you will live long in my mind and heart.
There's a lot of tech in the switch. Don't get me wrong I'd rather pay less but it doesn't seem crazy overpriced.
@IvanTheMonkey You can leave them on and use a separate controller in console mode. That's what the Pro controller is for. There are different options for everyone. That's the whole idea behind the system.
The Switch cases are pretty form fitting, so if your bag is big enough, it could fit. The total size of the Switch in the case probably isn't much more than the tablet itself.
It's not cutting edge tech, but it doesn't really need to be. We're getting very close to the point where power doesn't even really matter anymore. Games can only get so big. We probably won't get super huge AAA games like Red Dead Redemption 2, but we'll get everything else if the system sells well, plus Nintendo's first party games.
All depends on what you want, man. There's a platform out there for everyone. Just depends on whether you want pure power, which is the PS4/Xbone/PC, or innovation and gaming anywhere and everywhere with multiple control options and ways to play games, which is the Switch.
@3MonthBeef Thanks for the reply, but I don't see any source in that article. Maybe I'm just not seeing it on mobile.
@rjejr Hmm... $600 is too much I think. And yet I keep peeking to see if another pre-order for the console pops up... the other problem is I think I'm going to go Special Edition on Breath of the Wild I spot it on Amazon when its available. That 20% off pre-ordered games really helps. We will probably do 1, 2, Switch though it wasn't as good looking as I hoped in the Treehouse presentation. It should be $20 tops... it's $50, but at 20% off: $40... but it will get people to play at gatherings and they'll have fun. Then, maybe transition a few to Mario Kart for some more serious fun.
That's where a second Switch gets really nice though. Four player on the spot, no set up time or TV hogging. I'm already enjoying when I play MP:FF with my son that it's so easy to play instantly on the two devices. Anyway, my brother is getting one too, so many gatherings will be covered. But hey, 3 Switches and it's an instant LAN party with no setup.
I think people who play multiplayer online either never experienced how fun a LAN party is with actual people in the same room or have forgotten. This is where I see potential for the Switch to get some real marketshare. In college, during lunch, etc. it's a real possibility. Especially when Smash drops.
Anyway, I keep forgetting how soon I have to pay for it and Zelda is going to be the big reason for early on with a shared experience and one player, so it's more likely we are sticking with one until Splatoon really tempts us and then we'll also know exactly what we are getting into.
@rjejr USB ports are for Ethernet adapter and Skylanders portals and other accessories like that.
@ThanosReXXX
I get the complaints about it being expensive though.. because the accessories are expensive.
I don't think it's worth screaming bloody murder but they're definitely expensive
@JaxonH I also love the hands-at-sides control that the Wii offered and I was glad to see that shown in the presentation. I'm a little worried about keeping those things charged during gameplay at home though. Have you seen whether the grip that comes with the Switch can charge them? I know you can buy one that way separately but I'm pretty sure the included one can't.
@JaxonH I wasn't screaming bloody murder over any prices, just doing math. I'm assuming if your talking to Thanos I'm involved somehow.
@aaronsullivan "Ethernet adapter and Skylanders portals"
Oh, good points, thank you Mr. Sullivan, I feel better now. And a bit of a derp since we need a 4-port USB hub for our Wii U w/ Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions portals all hooked up at once. And the LAN adaptor. And an external HDD. Not sure whats ging to hapen w/ PS4 eventually, so far only SKylanders portal.
@Crillan
Let me find it for you quick, just give me a second. Think I sought on the treehouse which is a very long video lol, but maybe it was somewhere else I'll see if a Google search doesn't turn it up
@rjejr
Lol that wasn't directed at you buddy. Just a general statement.
@Crillan
Was verified in the switch presentation itself and later confirmed in the treehouse video so if you want to go watch those videos again feel free. Tendo has always used single touch resistive touch screens but now they are switching to the multitouch capacitive
This article was written right after the presentation
http://www.zeldainformer.com/nintendo-switch-screen-to-have-capacitive-touch-screen/
@aaronsullivan Yeah, just buy 1 Switch now for yourself, another for the kids for Christmas. I feel really good about a bundle, probably SSB Complete, for $329. Maybe $279 BF weekend. I'd really like a Mario O bundle for $299 on sale for $249 but that's just wishful thinking.
Switch should sell out March, April and May for Zelda and MK8D, and Spla2oon, but I see a summer lull, enough to make them plan a holiday bundle, if they aren't planning it already. I also wonder how soon before stores offer 1,2 Switch free, even though it isn't packed in. Not for a few weeks as all consoles will towards pre-orders, but maybe around Easter as store promotions?
@aaronsullivan
I know PowerA makes a comfort grip for $15 that doesn't charge, and Nintendo makes a charge grip for $30 that does charge.
I thought the pack in grip was charging, but in Treehouse vid he showed it off and said " you can also buy ones that charge the Joycon" so now I'm thinking the one that comes with the system does not
@rjejr
So @rjejr what are your thoughts on 1-2 Switch
@PlywoodStick doesn't think too highly of it, but I'm curious to know your thoughts because you really liked Wii Sports and might play with your kids.
@BertoFlyingFox The microsd card slot is located just under the kick stand and can be easily accessed without removing any screws.
@WiltonRoots
As opposed to your constant crying about comments on a website. If it troubles you that much, find another site. Save yourself the stress.
@ThanosReXXX
At launch the PS4 pad was £54.99. The XB1 pad was £44.99. The Switch Pro Controller is £69.99.
That's a lot more. 23% or 55%.
@electrolite77 I find it funny but hey. It's like car crash tv.
Nintendo direct will shortly be announced for damage limitation on all the negativity.
They will put in a free game with it, probably 1-2 switch as that game won't sell 10 copies.
Free online.
Bigger storage, probably 128gb.
VC with a 1 free game from every generation up to the GameCube.
Cheaper games.
Blah blah blah
i find it a little concerning that no one got the opportunity to clip/unclip the controllers themselves.
@JaxonH 1,2 Switch
Well, I've been saying for a week now that Ninteod should pack in a multiplayer game that showed off the Joycon, the equivalent of Wii Sorts and Nintnedo Land, and 1,2 Switch is that game, so I can't knock what I've been asking for.
On the other hand, 2 days ago I said Nintneod should not spend a lot of time in the event talking about the Joy-con accessorizes, b/c the people watching this thing are the die-hard, not the soccer mom's, so I think 1,2 Switch should have gotten as much exposure as ZipperSnipper or whatever that puzzle game is. Well maybe more than that, but in the middle, they should have opened w/ a heavy hitter like Skyrim or Zelda or Mario Odysessy to get people excited, the entire show was sort of backwards.
I've also read that 1,2 Switch is a $50 game? That can't be right. The only way Nintneod can be listing that as a $50 game is that they are planing on announcing March 1st that's it's free in every box, so then they can say you get a free $50 game in every $250 bundle. The other option is they include it w/ every $80 2-pack of Joy-Con, like Wii Play was a $50 game that came w/ a "free" Wiimote when Wii launched. Saying it's a $50 game now would make a nice plug for the $80 Joy-con pair. Or Nintneod really is planning on selling it fo r$50 bc/ there ar eonly 5, FIVE, games at launch - Zelda, 1,2 Switch, Skylanders, Just Dance and 1 other I forget - so if they say it's a $50 disc game they get to count it, otherwise Switch only has 4 games at a lunch, and you can't launch a console w/ 4 games. The reason they held back the launch until March was so they'd have games ready, that's what Kimishimi told us.
As for the game itself, price and pack in aside ,well I haven't really paid that much attention to it, but it's not something we would play. I bought Spin the Bottle for Wii U and it was fun for 8 or 9 minutes. If 1,2 Switch was a pack in w/ either the Switch or Joy-Con we' dplay it, but probably not for long.
You didn't ask, but ARMS looks really good, it's like a fun version of Pokken. If they make a VR version it could be really fun. I still wouldn't pay $60 for that, but bundled w/ the $80 Joy-Con pack we'd get it. By itself $40 maybe. I still think they spend too much time on it Thursday night, after they spent too much time on 1,2 Switch, but it looked fun in the Treehouse. Where they also spent too much time w/ it, but whatever.
Know what would have been better than 1,2 Switch or ARMs? Well ok probably 20 different games, but Rocket League looks like fun and has been well received. It is 2 years old but Minecraft is about 10. I got it for my kid today for his birthday on PS4, he was very excited to get it. IT also would give Switch another online game to justify the cost of paid online. Charging for MK8D alone seems a bit excessive if you ask me, Nintneod shoudln't charge for online until they have at least 5 online games - MK8D, Splatoon, SSB, Minecraft, FIFA. That could be when it happens, but the service needs to seem robust before they charge.
@JaxonH Oh, BTW, I think plywood stick is only half serious half the time. I get along pretty well w/ him, but I dont think he's always taking this stuff too seriously, so if he goes off the deep end, he may just be messing w you. I don't think he's a troll, I try to warn you when I see you going back and forth w/ them, you probably know who they are by now. They all seem to hate seeing you positive and happy, misery loves company and all that.
@Syrek24 wow, double standards much? someone else didn't like the presentation and you unleash a stream of insults while criticizing their negativity.
@rjejr
It does seem like people are bothered by the notion of someone actually being excited for Switch. It's not enough that they aren't happy with it, they want everyone else to not be happy with it too.
There definitely could be more launch games, but there is also Bomberman R, which looks excellent and has a single player campaign. People aren't giving this game the attention and excitement it deserves. We have two good launch games coming with Zelda and Bomberman R (well, plus 1-2 Switch but I'm guessing most will skip that one, even though I think it's a perfect game to get my family involved for some fun). But it seems like people don't want anything aside from big-name third-party. As if those are the only good games made anymore.
Arms looks fantastic, in the motion controls in that game look like what I always imagined Wii should have been. I think the technology just wasn't there yet at the time of the Wii. Now technology has caught up with us and were able to see games with normal controls that have motion integrated along with them to great precision. It's an exciting time to be a gamer that's for sure. The stuff that one guy was saying about how Zelda lets you aim the crossbow with the right Joycon... that's exactly the type of stuff I want to see.
But admittedly the launch lineup is pretty thin but there's a really strong first party line up coming these first nine months after launch. If Wii U had got a Zelda, 3D Mario, Splatoon, Xenoblade, new IP, Mario Kart and Hyrule Warriors all by August 2013 9 months later, it might not be in the situation it's in today. Also a lot of other games coming that we had to wait years for on the Wii U. Fast Racing Neo strung us along year after year until it finally just now released at the end of its lifespan. But here we get a new remixed FAST RMX just months after launch, and Redout which I was gonna buy on STEAM. Minecraft right away. It's like all these games that took years to come on Wii U, games that a lot of people wanted, we're getting right off the bat.
People expect so much nowadays though. I'm just looking at the console objectively and, I see a dope handheld that's sleek and sexy, with some amazing games coming (even if it is just 2 good launch games, more are coming shortly after- DQ Heroes and DQ Heroes 2 releases just weeks after launch, Mario Kart Deluxe the very next month, Arms and DQXI in the spring window leading up to e3, and lots of other games peppered throughout that nobody's giving any attention to. Now we don't have to look at games such as Sonic Mania or Tales or Assassins Creed (leaked on retailer website) and ignore it because it's not coming to Nintendo, now we can get excited for it! Not that I couldn't play them already cause I literally own everything, but if I can get the game on the go I'll choose that version every time.
It's no PS4, but it's not really the point. I've always looked to Nintendo for an alternative gaming experience. For games and ways of playing and features that I simply can't find anywhere else. I appreciate games of all magnitude and genre, and you won't see me writing off games like Sonic Mania and Bomberman R and Has Been Heroes and SMT and No More Heroes sequel and Octopath Travelers... especially when all these games can be played on the go as well.
FYI
Pikmin World sighted on retailer website. I'm telling you they've got more games they're going to show at e3 or maybe even in the lead up to launch (although I don't think any will be launch games, that's kind of written in stone at this point)
@rjejr How'd you know that!?
I mean... uh... good eye!
But seriously, Snipperclips completely stole the show. It legit looks fun, and everyone in the NL chat watching the stream was raving about it. As soon as I (eventually) get an NS, that's going to be the first game I download! It's looking to be one of the first NS eShop fan favorites.
@JaxonH Seriously, the (finally!) return of Bomberman, and it's based on the venerable Super Bomberman series! Yet there's almost no talk of it! Bomberman used to be a pretty big deal... That's how you know you're aging, the old favorites don't get the attention they used to.
And yeah, I think the negativity directed towards the NS as a whole is overblown from where it should be. There's really only a few points of contention, which may or may not become defining issues. Those potential issues aside, as an RPG fan, there's no way I can pass up the NS once 2018 rolls around. For all we know, this could be the next PS2-level Mecca for console RPG's.
@PlywoodStick
I know, it truly saddens me because the day is coming these franchises will die off. And it seems that day is closer than I thought. I was just hoping that it wouldn't happen in my lifetime. OG gamers like us are the only ones keeping them alive- this new breed of gamer only cares about one thing and one thing only- graphics. And to that end, big budget Western AAA.
And it's been that way for several years now, but at least there was a separate group of gamers out there that had a broader appreciation of video games rather than such a narrow focus. But now that mentality is even penetrating the Nintendo fan base. Now we're seeing more and more where those games are all people want and without them they have absolutely no interest. I think about these old consoles I used to own and there weren't more than 10 or 15 great games on them that I truly consider must have games. People would buy a console just for one game, and only end up playing three or four different games the entire generation. And that was OK because they were great games. But now with the third-party industry ballooning and funneling all into other systems, people expect the exact same thing with Nintendo. And lineups which years ago would've more than sufficed are now ridiculed and mocked and spat upon.
Of course there are some legitimate shortcomings of the system and it would be nice to have a rational conversation that addresses them. But when so many people take those shortcomings, overblow them and make it their sole focus, using it to advance an agenda of painting a picture as bleak as possible to sway others it's some kind of disaster... it does a great injustice to us as gamers, and certainly to Nintendo who no doubt has worked tirelessly for years to bring us this new technology and this new platform and these new games. Years of hard work to bring us even one new game, and people write it off in three seconds. Years of toil dismissed in the blink of an eye.
The 3DS is one of my favorite platforms I've ever owned. And I'm confident the Switch will exceed the 3DS both in scope and quality by the time this generation is over. Seeing 3DS developers make the jump to Switch with games like Shin Megami Tensei, that game from Bravely Default developers, surely a new Monster Hunter with XX, rumored Pokémon game (granted some of these need confirmation) is more than enough to assure me that we're going to have nice, long and satisfying generation of great games.
@JaxonH
"I get the complaints about it being expensive though.. because the accessories are expensive."
Yes there are. Only the most deluded can't see that. And they are many.
"I don't think it's worth screaming bloody murder but they're definitely expensive"
Well you should at least complain then shut up about it. Just like the guys from GameXplain.
It is the democratic thing to do.
@Hotfusion
Lol, I'm not worried about an extra $10
I think maybe prices are different from U.K. and US though, some people are really distraught over the accessories, but here in the US X1 controllers are $65 and PS4 controllers are $60, so $70 (while still more expensive) isn't that much of a difference.
But I think I read that over there in the UK it's a much greater disparity between prices? That might explain why some people aren't too bothered by it but others are. It definitely seems like UK gamers are getting the shorter end of the stick here.
@JaxonH I think a lot of the problem is a little bit too much deja vu from the Wii U, so those like myself upset at the Wii U's early demise, and nearly weekly reminder of such, are putting that on the Switch. Deja vu in EA coming out on stage w/ FIFA, at least they didn't say "unprecedented partnership" this time. Wii U owners already have MK8. Wii sold really well at $250 and Wii U bombed at $300 and $350 and here's Switch at $300 after all of those $250 rumours. A lot of deja vu. I think if Nintnedo had said - "We give up on home consoles, handhelds only for us now." - people might be more excited for this, even though $300 is a lot for a handheld so I know why they went w/ the home emphasis, price. And 3DS is still selling ok while Wii U is long gone. Even though it's still getting Zelda in 47 days even Nintedo treats it like it's gone.
And really, there's just no joy left here. All the happy people have gone, so even if Switch was $250 w/ Zelda people would still be complaining about the lack of more launch games, waiting for Mario until Christmas, MK being complete and not 9. There would be a few more happy people, but really this place should be ecstatic, we are finally getting Zelda on Wii U in 47 days, the game we've been waiting 2 1/2 years for since E3 2014, this place should be grinning ear to ear. But no, just whining. All the happy people left, only the whiners remain. The whiners and a few old cranky guys. I knew the place was like this, but I was really really really hoping the new Switch and Switch games would turn things around, but I was wrong. I'm going to go play Uncharted 4 now.
@rjejr
"All the happy people left, only the whiners remain. The whiners and a few old cranky guys. I knew the place was like this, but I was really really really hoping the new Switch and Switch games would turn things around, but I was wrong"
Wow, if even you are turned off by all this complaining then it's gotta be near critical mass.
But ya, maybe it will be like Wii U. Who knows? Then again maybe it'll be like the Wii. Certainly got all the right ingredients. But either way, sink or swim, sell or bust, the Switch will be an absolute joy to play and has to be the sexiest console I have ever laid my eyes upon. Worst case scenario it gets the same support 3DS got. Because you know there is no possible way this thing fails in Japan. Wii U failed in Japan. Switch will not. And because it won't fail in Japan it's going to get all those same games 3DS got.
So there's absolutely no possible way this thing will be any worse than the 3DS was, and 3DS was fantastic! I just don't understand why people can't see that.
@JaxonH Oh yeah, one more thing- I'm definitely going to wait for an Illumishield Screen Protector or the like for the NS before using it. I didn't wait before using it on my New 3DS, and BAM! I have no idea how, but within 2 weeks, it got a tiny permanent scratch on the bottom left somehow. Really noticeable when using the 3D. All I could do was apply a screen protector and prevent any more scratches. Contemplating replacing the top screen myself in the future.
@PlywoodStick
That sucks. I scratched my Vita screen bringing it to work, and bought a brand new Vita as a result. I've never scratched any other screen though, and I never use protectors (can't stand losing the luster of the image and having bubbles and stuff). I'm just really careful with it. I think Switch I won't have to worry about just because it'll be in the dock most the time anyways, and when I do take it I'll have it in a case inside that Switch backpack.
Might be cheaper to just buy a new 3DS, at least, it would have been during that $100 Black Friday deal (I grabbed an extra and modded it just for future proofing my collection, put it back in the box and into the closet)
"Weight wise it's slightly heavier than a Wii U GamePad"
That's bad to hear, since the Wii u gamepad is already quite heavy. Maybe lots of tabletop gaming for me.
By the way: What about the graphics? I surely don't think it comes anywhere near a PS4 or Xboxone. Its just around Wii u power. Wich is excellent for a portable, but not for a console to follow-up the wii u!
I'm starting to get quite a bad feeling about this. It's a complicated console compared to PS4 and Xbox One. This won't fly off the shelves like the Wii did.
@PlywoodStick "Seriously, the (finally!) return of Bomberman, and it's based on the venerable Super Bomberman series! Yet there's almost no talk of it!"
Tell me about it. I can't help but think this could open the doors for other dormant Japanese licences and genres to be revitalised on the Switch. The variety of game types we could possibly see from this...
@JaxonH "And because it won't fail in Japan it's going to get all those same games 3DS got.
So there's absolutely no possible way this thing will be any worse than the 3DS was, and 3DS was fantastic! I just don't understand why people can't see that."
They've got the Dragon Quest games. Once the Pokemon, Monster Hunter and Yo Kai Watch games rear their heads...
@ChosenOne25 Thank you so much, it was bugging me that no one was focusing on what slots the NS has and where they are placed.
This is great news! Hopefully the NS was designed with the idea to easily switch out microSD cards...it would make internal storage so much easier to handle.
@BertoFlyingFox No problem . I agree that most likely NS was designed with switching micro SD cards in mind, since I saw a carry case that offered space to store not only game cartidges but also micro sd cards, so they are probably preparing for that. I'd expect big games to take up to around 25GB of space, so even a 128GB card might be full quite quickly. That's a bummer for the folks who'd like to go all digital, but hey flash storage is significantly more expensive than harddrives, so I making a 500GB switch would have skyrocketed the price . At least now we have a choice I guess.
@electrolite77 Then the British prices are apparently different. I have no idea how your tax system works or what the VAT is for importing stuff, but over here in the Netherlands, the Euro price was the same as the dollar price, so a $60 controller became a €60 controller. And all these controllers were roughly the same price.
To this day, Xbox One controllers STILL cost €59,99, so what I said earlier still stands from my perspective and situation, because those are the actual prices I have to deal with over here.
@JaxonH True, but console accessories are expensive across the board, especially at launch, and DEFINITELY not just with Nintendo.
@ThanosReXXX
Yeah fair enough. Our VAT is really high at 20 per cent. Though that's the same for everyone of course so doesn't explain any difference.
@ChosenOne25
SD Cards will only get cheaper. As long as it's easy to swap cards over I think it's a good choice.
@electrolite77
I grabbed a 256gb yesterday for $149.99 which was the highest one, but they had 200gb for $75 and 128gb for $35. There was talk of a 512gb coming to market last year, but obviously never happened. It'll come though, hopefully within another year or so. That would be sweet there. Half a terabyte? Ya I might have to sell a kidney to afford it but that's the way to go really.
Seems like, cost-wise, the 128gb are the best bang for your buck, although the 200gb are only a slightly less better deal (because it's twice the cost but not exactly twice the storage) but it does give a little more wiggle room if you can afford it. I would say go with the 256 but only to those who can swing it. Nintendo said the dock is capable of external hard drive's connecting, but they're not sure if they want to activate that feature because the whole point of the system is being able to take your games on the go. I say they need to activate that feature and let gamers manage their own games. Can swap data back and forth between hard drive and SD. Worst case scenario is using multiple SD cards, but only for those going digital only. For me, 256gb should last all gen if it's just updates and DLC. And if not, I'll grab a 512gb in a year or two or whenever they finally release.
@ThanosReXXX
Well ya, as I was telling someone yesterday, I think the U.K. has different pricing cause here in the US PS4/X1 controllers are $60 and even $65 in some cases, so while $70 is high it's not like it's some drastic difference or anything. As I said I have no issue with it because the tech inside seems (surprisingly) more advanced than either of the other 2 platform's controllers. It's the dock that seems overpriced. Although I discovered it comes with an AC cord and HDMI cable, which is like $35-40 MSRP so maybe it's not quite as bad as I originally thought.
@JaxonH Yeah, that dock does seem to be a bit on the pricey side, but maybe they'll have additional bundles in the future with two docks at a reduced price or something like that.
@JaxonH Well, I think a lot of people don't see it as a 3DS replacement b/c 3DS is still going strong - DQ8, Poochy&Yoshi, Mario Sports - and it's the Wii U that needs replacing, but w/ that 5 game launch line-up of a Zelda port, 2 old games in Skylanders and Just Dance, Bomberman and whatever, it's not exactly blowing anybodys doors off. And $299 w/ no game is a buzz kill, that's just stupid, pack in 1 2 Switch, or AMRS b/c then EVERYBODY will spend the extra $80 for more Joycon. But don't sell a $300 console w/o a game after your last home console failed miserably. A lot of hurt Wii U owners and non-owners thought Switch would have sort of an apology or thank you attached, a little humble pie, but $300 and no game isn't that.
And paid online, when you are a company that doesn't really have a lot of online games, is well, kind of a stupid out of touch w/ reality move. Show the online games first - CoD, Destiny, Madden, SW Battlefront, SSB - THEN announce you have to pay for online. Don't announce the paid online first and then tell people you only have 5 games at launch. That's not winning any love.
As for the negativity on here, well it's not the negativity per se that bothers me, there is a lot to be negative about, but it's the way people go about it. I criticize Nintnedo for what I perceive to be their missteps, and I try to explain how I think they could do it differently. But a lot of people just get upset and then blast other people for being happy. I was just talking to my wife about how much abuse you get just for liking to play games regardless of console or price, you like fun games, you're a gamer. But mean people need to pull everybody down w/ them. That's what bothers me, not the attacks on Nintendo, but on everybody else's happiness. Way too much of that. I think a lot of people are sick of it, and were pinning hope on Nintendo blowing us away - $249 Switch bundled w/ Zelda, and Mario Odyseesy and Pikmin 4 as other launch titles. We didn't get that. Expectations were too high of course, but Nintendo barely met the bare minimum. I can only imagine what this place would have been like if Zelda was "summer" or "August". We're getting Zelda in 47 days, where's the excitement. Zelda. 47 days. Wii U and Switch. Let's party.
@rjejr
There's more launch games than listed- Redout and Binding of Isaac and some games coming in March like Has Been Heroes and I Am Setsuna. But ya, the launch is thin. But so was the 3DS launch which basically had just Street Fighter IV
And paid online, when you are a company that doesn't really have a lot of online games, is well, kind of a stupid out of touch w/ reality
It's also a reason not to really be that upset. There's not that many online games and there's really no reason to pay and if there's really no reason to pay then there's really no reason to be all that upset about it.
But yeah I get that you know people were hoping for some more games but at the same time it's not as bad as people are making it sound. If Wii U had Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade, Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Splatoon and a new IP (like Arms) all within the first 9 months people would have gone ape **** Instead we had to wait 9 months just to get one more 1st party title... Pikmin. Here we get 7
That aside I do think there are more games coming that will be announced over the next few weeks and certainly e3. No way they're going to e3 empty handed after a brand new console launch
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy I agree i have no idea why anyone who hates Nintendo would even have an account on this site makes zero sense
The Switch's getting a 3D Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade, multiple new IPs, Splatoon, and Mario Kart within the first 9 months.
If you don't like the launch line-up, then don't get it then. Wait until Christmas.
@Miss_Dark same I'll buy it when the price is right new or second handed but right now 400€ for the switch with zelda or 60€ for zelda wiiu, it's not an hard choice. nintendo didn't learn for their mistakes no third parties because they wanted to keep the concept secret they didn't gave dev kit to only a really few studios, even ubisoft didn't tried this time. their was more third parties games for the wiiu launch.
@JaxonH "There's not that many online games "
I was just thinking about this and decided they should have waited to announce paid online until September, after kids are back in school. I think it will be free until then, so that's good, but the timing of it was still bad. As you say, there aren't that many games, but that pretty much means you are paying to play MK8D online, and you can play it online for free on Wii U. Same for Spaltoon. I think people will pay to play Splatoon online, but you need to sell the console first, not give people a reason not to buy one.
Here's my real problem - Wii U had MK8, bundled in for awhile for $300, Spaltoon, SSB, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 1 & 2, W101 - so it had it's share of games, but it still only sold 13.5 million. So how does Nintneod sell more than that, say 30mil or 50mil, w/ basically the same line-up of games and a $300 console w/ no game bundled in and paid online? I know you don't care, you'll buy 1 and you don't care who else does, but it's the question that's in my head. I know portability for $300 is a big selling factor, cheaper than buying a PS4 and Vita or Wii U and 3DS, but is it enough? Skyrim is probably good or 1 or 2 mil, FIFA another 3 or 4 mil, so that's up to 20mil. How do they sell much more than that when they've had 4 years w/ Wii U to get to 13.5m?
@rjejr
Look at it this way. Mario and Zelda was on Wii U and it didn't sell. Does that mean they should never use Mario to sell another console then? Or that they should never use Zelda to sell another console then? If you go by the logic "oh well those games didn't sell Wii U, they won't work for Switch" they'd have to abandon every single franchise they released on Wii U because it "didn't sell the system"
The truth is, people didn't want Splatoon on Wii U. They didn't want it on a system with clunky UI. They didn't want it on a system that looked cheap. Didn't want it on a system where the gamepad couldn't go more than 20 feet. It wasn't enough to get them to buy that particular system because of a whole bunch of other factors that turned them off.
But that doesn't mean people don't want to buy Splatoon. It just means they weren't willing to buy that particular console for it with those particular features given those factors and capabilities and aesthetics and price. But they very well may be willing to buy a Switch for Splatoon.
The game sold millions and people loved it. So they know it's a game with appeal. And whenever you release a new console you want to release games that have appeal. Just because the Vita didn't sell with Uncharted on it, doesn't mean Uncharted can't sell another system.
Get what I'm saying? Otherwise you'd have to logically conclude Mario and Zelda has no selling power. After all, they weren't enough to sell Wii U.
@JaxonH I get what you are saying, and I think you get what I am saying, but we aren't getting each other.
Obviously Nintnod needs Link and Mario. I'm not saying scrap them and come up w/ new stuff to sell the system, but they still need to look at what's worked for them in the past and what hasn't.
What worked - $250 Wii w/ bundled Wii Sports
What didn't work at all - $300 Wii U no game
What didn't work as badly - $350 Wii U w/ Nintendo Land
So what do they do? $300 system and no game. That's not logical. The logical thing is to make a $250 system and bundle a game w/ it.
Know what else didn't work - $249 3DS launched w/ a pathetic launch line-up in March. It needed a whopping 33% price cut in 4 months and a bunch of games at Christmas. And a bigger screen for adults and a non-3D screen for kids.
So what do they do - $300 Switch launch w/ only a few games in March. That's not logical either. For a company that is constantly saying they keep learning from their mistakes they tend to keep making the same ones over and over again.
I think $299 is a good price, but they needed to bundle it w/ a game. Even a lame tech demo one like 1 2 Switch. But for a company that has the Wii U failure hanging over them, Spla2oon or Zelda or MK8D would have been a much better choice. How much do they need to make on MK8D to make a profit? They already sold 7 SEVEN million copies on Wii U. Just bundle it, then make the profit from all the people paying to play it online. It's a win-win all around.
And Nintneod needs to get over the whole "sell the hardware at a profit" idea. No, you can't sell game hardware at a profit and be a successful gaming company. Especially f you are planning on charging for online. Make the profit on the $90 docks and $80 extra Joy-cons. and the games. But they can't sell games or accessories or paid online if people don't buy the Switch first, and it's probably going to be hard to sell the Switch for $299, no bundled game, only 5 games at launch, and paid online.
They don't have to give Switch away, but they need to look at what worked for them in the past - $250 Wii Sports bundle - and what didn't - $300 Wii U no game, $350 Wii U 1 game, $249 3DS no games at launch - and use those facts to plan a successful Switch launch. What I see is them trying to sell a tablet like a naked emperor trying to show off his new clothes.
There's a lot of good w/ the Switch, but they don't seem to understand the western market. Sony couldn't sell Vita or PSPgo in the west, Microsoft can't sell Xbox360 or X1 in Japan. It's not just Nintendo, it's all of them. But this Switch launch could have been presented a lot better. Somebody needs to associate Nitneod w/ drug dealer culture - first hit is free. And razor and blade sales. And printers and ink. After the Wii U failure they need to earn back some good will w/ some losses on free products. All I see from Nitneod is gimme, gimme, gimme, and they are not in a position to do that, PS4 is running away w/ it in the home and smartphones everywhere else.
@rjejr
Here's the thing though.
$350 was always too high. They realized that and dropped Wii U to $300. But I was reading a report today that the gamepad cost $95 to produce. And the rest of the system cost $145 to produce. That's before retailer cuts and shipping and bundled games. Had absolutely no wiggle room to drop the price and since they started the price off to high the lowest they could go still wasn't enough to sell the system ($300 can sell systems, it just couldn't sell Wii U).
Also, Nintendo made virtually no money on Wii U sales due to cost of production being so high.
So I'm reading here that with Switch, it has a lot of technology and functionality that warrants a $300 price. I guess the motion is more on par with HTC Vive Sixsense or Occulus, far better than the seventh gen motion technology we've seen in the past. There's also the fact that you are quite literally getting a handheld as powerful as Wii U, and a home console 3-5X as powerful as Wii U, for $300.
If you were strictly speaking about just a console, even then there would be a good argument to make that it would be worth $300. But the fact you are also getting a handheld which is as powerful as Wii U... it really makes it quite a bit more valuable than the price is asking. Yes, skeptics will argue otherwise, but think about it for a minute. You could spend $500 on a Wii U and 3DS, which many people here have done, and still have to pay $60 for Smash on console and $40 for it on handheld, and even then your save doesn't transfer and there's no seamless transition and the handheld is standard def. Whereas Switch offers all of that, and even just the handheld portion of it is like having a Wii U in the palm of your hand. That's value. The fact this system is giving you a free handheld built in that's as powerful as Wii U is more than worth that extra $50 people think it should cost. Which really is only the case because of the rumors. Before that people were saying $300 would be a great price.
But the most important part, is that Nintendo has given themselves wiggle room if things don't go according to plan. If they priced the system at $250 you and me both know they would not be able to drop any lower than that. No possible way they sell a system more powerful than Wii U, that's a portable system, for 200 bucks. Not gonna happen. So if they priced it there, not only would they yet again not make any money, they would also back themselves into a corner where they have no ace up their sleeve. No backup plan.
Only once you consider this do you begin to understand why they had no choice but to price it at $300, although again I must stress that $300 for a handheld as powerful as Wii U and console 3-5X as powerful as Wii U, all combined into one with crossbuy and cross save permanently eliminated... really is a more than fair price. They have also priced the accessories as such that they can drop the price if needed. That's not to say I don't think the accessories shouldn't be less, I'm just conveying to you the explanation given in the story I was reading
@rjejr
And I don't agree it will be hard to sell. You say $300 like it's a mountain of cash but don't forget PS4 launched at $400 and the Xbox One launched at $500. Considerably more than all the other consoles on the market at the time- consoles that had good libraries and free online, and yet that did not stop them from selling.
Switch is launching for basically the same price as systems that are already in Year 4, granted it doesn't come with the game but it does come with an entirely free handheld as powerful as Wii U. That's worth quite a bit more than a bundled game. And the technology is impressive, and people like impressive technology.
And I don't think it matters if there's just 5 launch games (there's actually more, Redout and Binding of Isaac are apparently also launch games with retail releases, and Redout is amazing- I have it on STEAM... basically like launching with F-Zero, also hear Disgaea 5 is a launch game but we'll see). But regardless of what other games are coming, Zelda will sell systems, period. You could have absolutely nothing else releasing on launch day and I bet you people would still buy a Switch. Games like this do not come around often. It's a game that will literally make people forget about everything else. To the point where all that matters to them is that they want to play that game.
That's not to say having more games wouldn't help, but all the Knacks and Killzones in the world won't make difference with a game like Zelda on store shelves. People don't need a whole bunch of games right away to buy a system, they only need one... one and the promise of more to come. And there is also Mario coming by year's end. An open Mario. One that many are likening to N64 and the impact it had. So people have one game they need to play, and another must-have they need to play coming later in the year. That's really all it takes for a console to sell. Add to Zelda and Mario Odyssey... Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, Bomberman R, Xenoblade 2, Arms, Fire Emblem Warriors, Dragon Quest XI, Skyrim, Dragon Quest Heroes 1 and 2, Minecraft, and lots of other games that will draw people in and will help sell the system... and I don't think they really have much to worry about.
My coworker pre-ordered a Switch just for Skyrim. Just knowing that it's coming later in the year was all he needed to put down $300 for a system. He also got Zelda because obviously you need a game to play right away, and it's the obvious day one buy. Seeing people interested in the system who normally aren't interested in Nintendo systems is what tells me people might be overreacting a bit
@JaxonH The big problem with Zelda is that it's also available on Wii U, and a lot of people bought a Wii U for that Zelda game, then the Wii U got dropped after about 3 1/2 years, so Nintendo has made a lot of enemies among its most loyal fanbase. I wonder if we will ever get Wii U vs. Switch numbers for Zelda?
And PS4 sold well at $400 b/c with it's specs people were expecting $500 or $600 like the PS3. When they saw that PS4 hardware at "only" $400 people were very happy. Then Microsoft handed Sony the keys to the kingdom with the $500 X1 price. With all of the $250 Switch rumours, $300 seemed like a lot. Partly Nintendos fault for waiting so long in silence. And they could have had a $200 system if they really wanted, see my other post. Then it could have been like Apple like Iwata said.
It is funny how peoples mind work. I keep thinking if they had made a $199 SwitchTV -no screen, just in the dock - and a $199 SwitchGo - no dock - they probably could have sold more of those combined that a $300 Switch, even though as you correctly point out $300 is cheaper than $400. But I think people only see Nintendo making them spend $300 for stuff they don't want. Sure, $300 is great for a hybrid, and the hybrid is a great idea, but some people like me only want a home console, and some people like my kids want a portable. $200 + $200 = $400 but only for people who WANT both. For the Japanese who may only want a portable $200 is cheaper, for old guys who like to sit on the couch $200 is cheaper.
And of course, for some people it isn't about the money, it's about the games. Where's Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing and Metroid? And Pikmin 4.
There's a lot for people to complain about, so that's what they're foing. We've already known Switch was a hybrid since October, and we've known about Sky rim and 3D Mario since then too. It's like they used up all their good news with that hipster trailer in October and all they had left was bad news. Maybe they should have held Mario, Spkatoon and Skyrim out of the earlier reveal? There just wasn't enough good Thursday night. ARMS and 1 2 Switch were never going to make the types of people who post on here happy.
@rjejr
Admittedly it really needed one more big a game at launch. One big and unexpected game at launch. Therein lies the crux of the issue I believe. Had Xenoblade 2 been a launch game along with Zelda, would've come off significantly better.
I think it's because there was no big game that we didn't know about that will be available right away. Zelda is the biggest game imaginable but we did already know about it. But it is what it is.
As far as I'm concerned people can either get over it or move on. A lot of people act like they are the sole reason Nintendo still exists and along with that I see a lot of entitlement such as "they better do exactly as I demand or I'm going to rage and doom them to hell, leave and never come back" and to be honest with you these people don't matter. There must be no more than 500 people like that on the Internet. All 500 of them could walk away and it wouldn't make a sniff of a difference tomorrow.
In the end it's the long term game that matters. And Nintendo's ability to draw in normal people to buy their console. Not necessarily casuals like Granny Smith and Soccer Mom Susan, but normal people, younger, who aren't obsessed with video games like we are but who have played video games in the past... maybe owned a console10 years ago or however long. And judging by the people I work with who are exactly these types of people, it's been a really positive response thus far. I'm just waiting to see if this quality engineer is going to be the next to buy one.
@JaxonH "Xbox One launched at $500. Considerably more than all the other consoles on the market at the time- consoles that had good libraries and free online, and yet that did not stop them from selling."
Um, I'm pretty sure $500 DID stop the Xbox One from selling. Stopped MS from even saying how many they've sold. That's why they lowered it to $400 by taking out the Kinect, then lowered it to $350 then $300. All in less than 3 years. Wii U was out for 4 years and it lowered once from $350 to $300. Microsoft was willing to do whatever was necessary to keep the X1 selling. they even built a newer version half the size w/ added 4k, HDR and a 4k blu-ray player, still at $300. Wii U at $300 didn't have a 4k blu ray player, or a blu ray player, or a DVD player. Switch doesn't have any of those things either, which I think is an issue for Nintneod saying it is a "home gaming console". People expect blu-ray drives and 500GB HDD in their "home gaming consoles". Nvidia has Shield TV for $199 w/ none of those things, but when people say "home gaming console" how many people think "Shield TV"? Calling it a "home gaming console" in 2017 that only has 32GB of storage, well that isn't a "home gaming console" amount of storage, it's a tablet or smartphone.
I understand what you are saying, I'm just trying to get you to understand what other people are thinking. Switch may be more like a Vita w/ TV out than a portable PS4. And at least in that regard it has much cheaper storage cards. But then again Vita is now 5 years old, nobody wants to compare Switch to 5 year old hardware. Not even I do, but somebody might. Somebody will. The Switch versions of DQH1&2 may look more like the Vita versions than the PS4 versions, though personally I think it's a port of the PS3 versions, but that's just me.
Earlier today I wrote the Switch should pick up steam once it starts getting some portable games - Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Monster Hunter. Probably at E3. Things should really start for Switch at E3. SSBComplete, BG&E2, Luigi's Mansion 3, Pikmin 4. I think Nintendo is kind of soft launching the SWitch to meet demand and let 3DS wind down w/ Pikmin, Poochy & Yoshi, MHXX and Mario Sports Superstars. Then we'll see.
@rjejr
The thing is, expectations change. People used to expect bluray but that's changing. PS4 Pro didn't even include the 4K BluRay.
I think alot of people take Nintendo and then compare to PS and MS, because that's all they know. That's the only comparison they can link. But Nintendo is clearly not in that camp. If people are looking for 500gb, it's because they're buying a console with hundreds of big AAA games that warrant that space. If people are looking for bluray, again Nintendo isn't gonna be the one.
But theres alot of ppl in this world. 8 billion last I checked. And not everyone is looking for the same thing. Some people, dare I say, just want games. And doesn't necessarily have to be AAA. Some people just want something to entertain them, something cool to show off. And Switch fits that bill.
And about Vita, it may be 5 year tech, but nomatter how you spin it, a handheld device that can actually run current gen games is impressive. Vita couldn't run current gen games in its time. It's why Uncharted trilogy was never ported, they had to make a separate handheld version. Historically handhelds have always been incapable of running what the current consoles can run. That just changed, and had Sony released a handheld that could run current gen games, even if they were scaled down, it would be hailed as a game changer and hyped to no end. Sorry but Vita never did that. It was always a full generation to a generation and a half behind consoles. Switch is like 1/4 a generation behind consoles. Close enough it can actually get console ports.
It's not the same thing as Vita with TV out, because TV out requires plugging a cable in. Now that may seem trivial but it makes all the difference. It's the reason no one hooks their iPad to their tv to play. Sure, it can do it, it can even pair with controllers, but it's a hassle, it's not seamless, and it just wasn't designed with it in mind, and certainly not capable out of the box.
Same with Shield TV. It didn't have a dock for seamless transition. That's the difference. And it only got a handful of token PC games, everything else had to be streamed from your pre-existing rig, so glorified remote play.
And I'm not debating the Wii U price. Yes they should have dropped it when it wasn't selling. But the point remains consoles launch for FAR more than $300 and still can't offer anything more than TV play. So whether or not Xbox sold at $500 is irrelevant, it's the fact it even could that shows just how low $300 for a Wii U / 3DS combo in one, where 3DS is actually strong as Wii U.
And I'm sure they will eventually drop the price. Probably start with a bundled game this Christmas though.
@JaxonH "PS4 Pro didn't even include the 4K BluRay."
And Sony got relentlessly slammed for it, and Slim outsold Pro about 5-1 this holiday (depending on region, I think it was 9-1 in Japan. ) Maybe if Pro had a 4k blu ray player it would have sold better? X1S sold really well for a few months after it launched, maybe b/c it had a 4k blu ray player. So I'm not willing to say it doesn't matter at all for Switch. Probably not a big deal, but its a piece or people to consider when they buy a new console.
"it's the fact it even could that shows just how low $300 for a Wii U / 3DS combo in one"
I think it's a good price, the problem was how long it took Nitneod to announce it, like 3 days after that Nikkie guy said $250. If that Nikkie guy would have said $350, then $300 would have looked good. I think once the dust settles $300 will look good, people just need time to digest things. Really, and I think you'll agree w/ meo n this, it was less about the price and more about the 5 launch games. Wii U had a very light game year in 2016, a lot of people were expecting Pikmin 4 and Mario Odyssey at launch. Maybe SSB too, which Nintendo hasn't even mentioned yet. I'm not sure there really are too many negative coments about the price other than the $90 dock, I think most of the negatitivty is about the lack of launch games, th elack of a bundle, and th eprice of games liek Bomberman, 1 2 Switch and ARMS. I dont think the $300 price of the Switch is realy an issue form all the comments I've read. Of ocurse fo rsom peoel it is, they only would have bene happy at $199, but I don't think $300 is really an issue for a new console. Maybe just in the context of value as you say, do I want to spend $300 on a new console at launch for Zelda or buy it for Wii U and buy a Swtich when Spaltoon releases in "summer" or Mario at Christmas. At $250 more people would have wanted 1 at launch, that would have been a great price, but $300 isn't bad, it just isn't wow good.
@rjejr
I do actually agree with you on that. Had Zelda never been announced, and it was a surprise game launching for Switch, people would be amazed and hyped. It needed 1 major surprise release for launch, and nomatter how good Zelda is, it wasn't a surprise and it's a dual release, and most people here already have Wii U. Doesnt help next major game is Mario Kart, which that too is total hype (battle mode! portable play with 2 controllers built in!) but it's not that surprising new game people want.
Arms as a launch title may have cut it. New IP, surprise announcement, utilizes system features... perfect candidate.
Getting back to PS4, I don't think the Blu-ray had anything to do with it. Xbox cut their prices so low, and with BC and Gears and Forza all in a row it earned it's win.
@JaxonH As I've said several times I like ARMS, whenever it releases in "Spring" but I don't like it enough for $60 plus $80 for a 2nd set of controllers. Or $70 for a Pro since it doesn't need motion. But it does look good, like Pokken Tournament, but funner. Who knows, maybe by the time it releases it will get a bundle.
Still not a system seller though, not even if it was ready at launch. In my head weird new games can't be system sellers, they are the games you buy when you are done w/ the system sellers like Zelda or Mario or Spaltoon. If they release ARMS after MK8D, when everybody buys an extra set of controllers for that, then it will be a nice pick up.
Back in 2015 I told my wife to BUY Nintendo stock, I knew you can never count out Nintendo, she wouldn't agree. =(
