WayForward has made quite a name for itself in the 2D action platformer space, with on titles such as Contra 4, Ducktales: Remastered, and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero as just some highlights on the studio’s impressive résumé. While it has done plenty of original work, the studio has also never shied away from producing licensed titles for other franchises, and the latest licensed game it’s been working on has just been announced.
The Mummy Demastered—a companion game to the new movie coming out this week—has been announced for a multiplatform release in late August, with the Switch being included on the list of platforms. Not much is known about the game other than a single screenshot, but it looks to be another retro inspired Metroidvania with some gorgeous artwork. Regardless of how the movie itself turns out, this will likely be a game to keep an eye on.
What do you think? What’s your favorite WayForward game? Do you think this’ll be any good? Drop us a comment in the section below.

That screenshot looks promising. Hopefully it's for the switch/3ds too as I'll love to play this on the go.
Wayforward never ceases to amaze with its pixel artwork. On my radar!
If It plays like aliens: infestation for the DS it should be good.
Knowing WayForward, I'm sure it'll be great.
I certainly didn't see this one coming. But I ain't complaining.
Does demastered mean its worse than the movie?
Why is Wayforward doing a game on The Mummy starring Brandon Fraser?
@Jasonmd I highly doubt it, its tanking really hard in Rotten Tomatoes
@BenAV They do good stuff, but they also made the Regular Show game (along with the plethora of Adventure Time games) as well as Bloodstained. They're not perfect, but they will at least churn out a quality product
I think this is great news
I NEED this in my PS VITA
Showing me the Wayforward on my Switch.
How can something be "demastered" if the source film wasn't mastered to begin with?
@MetaRyan I think that they just want to take a pun to those Master Games coming out as lately. Since it is a pixel-based game it seems like a step down in graphics from today's standards, thus the "demastered" moniker.
Yes yes and yes, Wayforward are the Way forward. Never played a game of theirs i didnt like.
That's actually a really interesting screenshot - the map screams Metroidvania, but open-air locations like that forest present special challenges in a genre that demand some degree of verticality.
On top of that, the movie tie-in demands a sizable degree of narrative progression and venue shifts, which complicates the necessities of exploration and backtracking to make a Metroidvania work.
Finally, while a semi-limited ammo system is hardly provocative, the choice of a weapon as responsive and impressive as a machine gun for the fallback infinite-ammo weapon is at least interesting. I'll be curious to see what arms are worth using limited ammo on, though I guess if nothing else they could just do missles like Metroid itself and call it a day.
@maceng (I was trying to make a "The Mummy sucks" joke, but it wasn't very well thought out.)
The screenshot looks nice, but I probably won't buy it since its a movie-based game. Besides the movie seems to be utter pants!
Looks similar to the Castlevania games on PSX, DS and GBA. Very interesting. WayForward has a solid record on high-quality side-scrolling platformers. This could be really good. It certainly looks amazing, visually.
Lovely Neo Geo aesthetic. I've played a fair few of WayForwards sidescrollers, and I'd be up for this.
They resurrected a mummy AND the Super Metroid HUD map..
First impression is good (heaps better than the movie's impression), hopefully it'll be as good a Metroidvania as it can be (the atmosphere seems right in the pic)..
It's nice to see that Way Forward hasn't given up on their wonderful sprite work.
Odd choice of licensed title from both sides, but if the game is good I'm not complaining. I hear the movie is pants though.
Hard to tell much from one screenshot but WayForward are very talented. The reason very often that movie tie-in games are bad is because the developer has spent a large part of their budget on securing the rights to the license leaving little for developing the game itself. I hope that isn't the case here.
That a very pretty screenshot. Sounds like it won't have to be great to be better than the film.
Metroidvanias FTW - and I remember enjoying the one WayForward did for Hotel Transylvania (not to mention the amazingly charming Shantae series). Between these, Sigma Star Saga, Silent Hill: Book of Memories, Duck Tales Remastered... WayForward is one notable studio. They excel at 2D graphics, too. Oh if they would ever get to do an MLPFiM game like they've expressed the wish to.
Hmm, we'll see how it turns out. Looks intriguing though
Top notch pixel work, licensed or not, I'm interested.
I'd take this over Super Meat Boy any day of the week. Looks promising.
Ooo. Call me interested.
sounds promissing
If it reviews well, I can definitely be persuaded. Since it's licensed o do have to wonder if it'll be done by what appears in the last to be a less talented B-Team there, but the license certainly isn't enough to keep me away!
Looks like a Contra/Metal Slug/Castlevania kind of game. I'll definitely looking forward to this one.
What's with the remastered/demastered confusion?? The movie is made. It's not remastered or demastered. At this state you can then either remaster it or demaster it. They are doing the latter.
Anyway, I really really like the idea of this-- reminds me of Aladdin for SNES! I hope this becomes a trend.
I usually don't do too many movie / TV / cartoon / Etc to video game conversions, but considering Wayforward's pedigree, I do admit this looks interesting.
Hmm. Never heard of that movie before, but that first screenshot looks interesting.
Will be tracking this one like a bloodhound. Wayforward does great work.
That screenshot is beautiful. Makes me want to play it but if it is as hard as Contra I know I won't be able to finish it. I loved watching my older brother play games like this when we were younger.
Oh yes! 🤤
Next to Nintendo, Wayforward makes the best platformers. I am looking forward to this quite a bit. I could care less about the movie, but I'm all over the game.
@YANDMAN They've made a few games for small children which had compromised gameplay...I can't deny that their games always exude quality, but I just can't get into the ones aimed at younger audiences.
I would definitely buy this if it came out on 3DS, though.
Not sure how I feel about the franchise. If they have creative freedom to steer the game however they see fit then I have confidence in Wayforward. Haven't played too many of their games - including shantae. But Contra 4 and Alien: Infestation were brilliant, although I felt alien ended a little too soon.
@Asaki well they're like you say for a younger audience, so why would you bother?
Was interested until I saw it was a movie tie in.
I hope it's better than the movie at least.
No interest in the movie.
This game, on the other hand...
