Fatigued is probably a good word for it. Gamers are getting more sophisticated. This includes the kids at the toys-to-life level. I think Disney and Activision have done a poor job of understanding this.
The games they have presented have been very simplistic. Disney has counted on the Toy Box to drive its sales. They have completely ignored the adventure portion of the game.
As much as we have hated the scarcity of Amiibos, it has probably gone a long way to extending the life of the product. Now that the supply is there, Nintendo needs to focus on doing something interesting with this line.
This game was not on my radar until the cooperative element was introduced. My son and I flying around and shooting really has me excited for this one. Friday can't get here fast enough.
@sandman89 Technically, it is not too late for the NX. Products are constantly released under the notion of "patent pending." This is why you see so many cases go to court. I even think that the Wii fell into this.
It seems like the Wii U is just now coming into its own as a Indie developers platform. The last few of the releases have picked up great scores, and I'd have to agree with most of them. Pill Cross is great, U Host looks pretty fun, and now, this one.
Hopefully, these creators can take titles like these mentioned to the NX with ease.
I actually jumped over to the Game Store, and I don't think I would pay $13 US for this one. i paid $6 US for Pixl Cross and it is a fine game full of content. I can at least play single player with that one. If U Host goes below $10, I'll revisit it.
While I completely understand the thought and reasoning behind the ports, some I would agree with, and some I would not. In the end, this is going to sound hypocritical, but hey, who's not a hypocrite in some way.
Zelda Wii U is a given. The likelihood of this selling the number that Nintendo wants it to sell is minuscule. The low install base just makes it a have to considering how much money that has most likely been spent on the game.
Super Smash Bros. is set up easily for a GOY edition. The content was huge, and you are not going to get another of these games any time soon. I'm okay with that.
Super Mario Maker might has well be a port. I mean just keep updating it with new content, and that is just fine. There is no need to reinvent the wheel on this one. I doubt I would repurchase this one. I like the functionality of the Wii U Gamepad.
Here is the hypocritical part. I don't think we need a port of Splatoon. I think a sequel would be great. This is basically there Call of Duty, and if you had the three previous games lined up to ship day one, why not announce the Splatoon Sequel for the Spring. I don't think I'd buy it again.
It is interesting to see how all of the Star Fox drama is coming out. People have been dead set against the controls, the graphics, and the delays. However, most of the reviews are coming in pretty good. I guess Nintendo does know what they are doing. Now, if we could only get a little more information on the NX.
This is a great game. As far as the indie games go, it was one of my favorites. I'm definitely looking forward to the update.
I have to say though prior to the last update, the glitch due to the game being on an external hard drive was killing me. I stepped away from it for a few months. I wonder if this had anything to do with the online slowing down.
I picked this up last night. I have become quite the Picross junkie as of late. I found 3D for $4 at GameStop so needless to say I was hooked.
This game is certainly worth the $6. It has a solid amount of content. The fact that you can create your own to share is an added bonus. Not to mention, you pick up 10 gold My Nintendo points for just $6.
The only real issues I have with the game are somewhat minor, but they can be frustrating to Picross veterans. It's definitely not a game breaker, but it is mildly annoying.
First, the zoom feature will mess you up if you don't pay attention. While it opens up the opportunity for larger puzzles, I found myself especially at first having to reset the puzzle because of a inadvertent mistake.
The final annoyance is in fact trying to finish these puzzles under time to get the full achievements. I agree with most on here that the only way to get it under time is to already know the puzzle. This game is still enjoyable despite these minor setbacks.
I am so incredibly over the argument of gender. I think the world has come has become ridiculous. I just want the game to come out. Link has been male for 30 years. Why not make a new IP with a female hero. Of course, Samus has been a female hero for 30 years. Let's make her male.
Personally, I like My Nintendo quite a bit. I picked up Mutan Mudds Super Challenge, and the download was on the way to my Wii U and the coins were in the account almost instantly.
I'd push those coins out to a 2 year expiration like Club Nintendo had, but it is so easy to pick up coins. You should be able to pick up in the neighborhood of 200 per week pretty easy.that is just Miitomo alone.
I think it is a great start. It's only been out a week so I think I will give them a little longer before I get too mad.
The Wii Remote was innovative for its time. When used correctly, it enhanced gameplay. I think the knock came because it did not need to be used in every game, and a lot of times made the game harder than it should have been for all of the wrong reasons.
That said. I like the options that it gives a studio, and if the NX could look for a way to use motion when it warranted while still retaining a button configuration for more traditional games, I could support it.
I wonder if the report means ceasing production of this model. What if they come back with a slimmed down version like they did the Wii. They might take out the Wii backwards compatibility, take out the online version, and maybe do something different with the gamepad. If they could take enough stuff out to get it around the $199 price point, it might give it some new life.
I really have enjoyed the Wii U. Just yesterday, I checked our playtime as it compares to when we first got it, and it's pretty much the same. I'd be interested to know how many games people own on their Playstions or Xboxes as it compares to the Wii U.
I have around 30 Wii U games. Are they more in line with the demographic of my children? Naturally, they are, but that is what I am looking for from Nintendo. I understand if some are not, but my Wii U has served me well.
The guy most likely got his stuff yanked because of the income he makes off of Nintendo. He says 90% of his income comes from the viewing of Mario Maker videos. Nintendo is within their right to restrict people without licensing agreements from making income off of their IP's.
As much as most will disagree with me, Nintendo has to do things like this. There are companies that pay licensing agreements to them that demand them to respond to situations like this. Not to mention, if they do not respond, it could set a legal precedent.
As much as people want to just do whatever they want and expect no one to say anything, it is not at all something a responsible company should do.
Like it or not, I think this is the way Nintendo is wanting to go. Apple and Android are already doing this and no one complains. Now, Nintendo will need to give us a system that is more than 32gb if this is their plans.
@alasdair91 I see where you are coming from, but I have grown to literally hate Facebook. If Nintendo can keep politics off of it, I will gladly use it.
I know it has been mention already, but the lack of physical rewards is disappointing. One of my favorites pieces in my collection is the figurine with all of the Super Mario characters on them.
I love Nintendo. I love the IP's. I think they make some of the best video games in the world, but the question this article asks can't be answered at the time.
As much as I would love to think it is vital, we have know idea what the long term plan is with the core of what Nintendo does. How will it interact with the Wii U, 3DS, or NX? We've no clue to that answer.
I'd wager to say we won't be able to answer this until after the NX announcement. Until then, Miitomo is a cool app, and My Nintendo is nothing more than Club Nintendo 2.0.
There is a lot of talk about the PSVR preorders selling out. However, you get theirs with early adopters (Wii U excluded). I think the real question is what does it look like in a year. They talked moving 8 million units in the first two years. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but it will be interesting to watch.
I think I will be sitting it out, but I'd be sitting out a Nintendo VR system. I really just game to relax. That was one of the frustrating things about the Wii and its motion controls.
Of course, I'm an old man so that explains a lot. 😀
I really think the NX will live or die on its own. I don't think the PS VR will have any bearing on its sales. There is a lot of hype in the VR market, but ultimately, it is not a mainstream gaming device.
I echo somes sentiments that a big worry is that Sony in developing this. They have a very bad track record when it comes to supporting peripherals. They are quick to pull the plug when things go south.
I think the pricing of the PS VR will be another concern. The goggles are $400. To use the PS VR to its fullest you need the Move nunchucks and camera. This puts the full experience North of $500 if you didn't save yours from a previous generation, and sales of the move have been less than stellar.
Staying on point with the pricing, very few average gamers will be able to even afford to spend that much on something that really isn't needed. If a gamer does have that much disposable income, they are likely a high-end PC gamer that would most likely just purchase Occulus or Hive.
I digress I suppose. In the end, Nintendo will be the biggest factor in determining the success of NX. Any other reason the NX would fail is nothing but an excuse.
I just read the story on the pricing of the PlayStation VR. $399 for the headset, but you still need to buy the PlayStation camera and the Move nunchucks. That is pushing $500.
I don't think Nintendo takes this kind of leap. That is too much for me. Who has ever heard of an add on being more than the console? If Nintendo tried this, Patcher would have a corinary. He'd throw them under the bus so fast...
I see Nintendo doing something more with Augmented Reality. I think the rumors have said as much when talking about the social experience on the NX. The rumor said to look towards Pokemon GO. There have been all kinds of rumors about a Nintendo-based IP that is a lot like GO. Personally, I think I fit more in line with AR, but I understand why the "hardcore" would want VR.
Going eShop only, makes me wonder if Nintendo is using this as a precursor to how the NX will be going the go-to-market. I still hold fast to the idea the NX may be designed to compete more with the likes of Apple or Fire TV.
If this is indeed the case, My Nintendo may be the attempt to get their customers used to purchasing via online. I'm not saying I like it necessarily, but this could be the method to the madness.
As an aside and completely off subject, if the NX has a handheld aspect to it, it is my hope that they introduce cover plates similar to what the New 3DS has. Just a thought.
I hate to be a politician on this subject, but it easy to understand where some are coming from on both sides. Nintendo I think has experimented with pricing, and they continue to do so. They just so happen to get FE Fates right. They missed on Tennis.
In hindsight, I think the only reason we even got Tennis is because Star Fox wash pushed out. Remember though, many people thought Splatoon was over priced at first, but through the DLC, it has become a tremendous value.
In the end, we all have to realize they will hit and miss on this. This problem is not solely Nintendo's either. The digital age has a lot of companies experimenting.
Wario Land: Shake It was a great platform for the Wii. I am a little at a loss as to why they have left that series alone. If you can get your hands on Shake It, it is definitely worth the money. I actually sold it back to Gamestop after I beat it and regretted it. I have since picked it up again, and used, it was less than $10.
Oh, I'll probably get it. Just for the simple fact, my kids and I will have fun with it. I have a couple of old iPhones we basically use as iPod Touchs. This will give me a fun way to communicate with them back and forth while I am traveling...which I do...a lot.
Well, if you are going to create a day, it's good to give everyone a little heads up. This seems like something of an afterthought. Should have built it around an announcement or at least dropping the Mario Mini game.
@zool Good luck with that. The Special Edition sold out so quick over here in the States. Of course, the eShop for all of the games are the same. You just don't get the swag which isn't much, but still. It would have been nice to had it all on one cart.
I know it's not the same, but I enjoy reading Nintendo Force and Pure Nintendo Magazine every month still. Nintendo Force still does some pretty amazing posters.
I think there is a huge leak in Nintendo of Europe. Most all of the real information we have has come from there. Of course, the days of keeping secrets for very long are over. Nintendo may need to rethink the idea of only talking about games that are close to release.
I have played a Nintendo the better part of thirty years, now. Amazingly enough, I picked up Yellow, and it is the first Pokemon game I have ever played of the core series. I thought I was too old for it when it first came out.
Kids helped change all of that. They are crazy into it, and now, so am I. I love retro gaming, and this is a real gem. It was enough to make me go out and preorder moon.
@Xenocity I agree with what you have to say about Western Gamers. The sad things is we also beat our chest for new IP that with few exceptions end up being successful. In fact the most successful new IP's in the last few years have been games designed with the "hardcore" gamer not in mind.
In the last five years, Sklander, Disney Infinity, Lego Dimensions, and Splatoon have been huge new IP's. Fire Emblem Fates has made a strong push in the West as well as Japan. Interesting thing, two of those are Nintendo exclusives. I know Fire Emblem is not supposed to be a new IP, but Awakenings was largely overlooked (30,000 copies). Fates is being introduced as a game that needs no history.

Re: Talking Point: The Latest Nintendo Direct Showed a Renewed - Albeit Temporary - Focus on the Current Generation
