Re: Review: FIFA 23 - The Final Whistle Blows On A Legacy Of Disappointment

construx

FIFA is a live game. We don't just pay for a kit and roster upgrade. We pay for all the events that are happening for a year.

What are those?

  • Live forms (players' ratings change every week in certain game modes depending on their performance in real life)
  • Ultimate Team cards: we get Squad Based Challenges all the time, new, boosted Team of the Week cards every week, Team of the Year cards in January, updated new player cards in February, Team of the Season cards from lots of leagues in May and, should a European Championship or World Cup occur (like this winter), we will get a whole new event (with new cards, SBCs etc.) covering it. (The last World Cup event was a completely new game mode, completely free for the game owners - even in the Switch version.)

Oh, and for anyone who already has FIFA 22, the digital price of 23 is only 20 Euros instead of 40. That's a 50% discount.

Sure, for those who aren't very good at this game and won't play it online, this might sound like just a kit and roster upgrade. I personally put in 1000+ hours every year and can confirm that it's not.

What are the owners of the new generation consoles getting in a new FIFA game?
A broken, hot mess where speed is everything and you almost need a pilot license just to defend now. It's borderline unplayable and the built-in cheating system decides the results of the online Ultimate Team matches anyway.

Sure, it looks shiny, sure it has tons of features that the Switch version doesn't (for 70 Euros instead of 20/40).
But if the gameplay isn't there, the game is just not fun to play.

I've been playing the online part since FIFA 13 on PS3.
I would've stopped around 17, if not for the Switch version.
The Switch version, fortunately, has a balanced gameplay. You can actually learn and master it and they won't completely change it by the next iteration.

I rarely say that but in case of FIFA, the unchanged gameplay of the Switch version is a blessing.

I try the other versions every year. I return to the Switch version every year.

It's only a 2 point game for those who don't play it competitively. I agree, for them, any version of it will do fine on the Switch.

Re: Soapbox: It's The Summer Of Visual Novels On Switch, And It's Just The Beginning

construx

I'm 40.
Visual novel is currently my favorite game genre because I've been doing all the others since I was 9.
Those others don't excite me anymore. They've been done to death.
But I still have time for books and good stories.
I really liked DDLC and wished it was a VN about literature, poetry and how to improve ourselves.

I wish developers started to make games for a more mature audience.
The average gamer is above 30.
Jumping, killing and stuff like that grows old after a time.

Re: EA Is Considering Bringing EA Play And "More Great Experiences" To Switch

construx

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know, EA Play is a subscription service, not a streaming service.

Its cost is pretty low on other platforms where there are plenty of EA games available.

But... I mean... what would they sell subscriptions for on the Switch?
They have, like, half a dozen games here (most of which are the same FIFAs)..

I've heard that GamePass will soon include EA Play, too, on Xbox.
I wish they'd bring GP to the Switch!
Then we'd have all current generation games (minus PS4 exclusives).

Re: FIFA 21 Costs £45 On Switch, Despite Being Another 'Legacy' Reskin

construx

There are 3 things to consider here:

  • Switch FIFA sales contribute to less than 5% towards total FIFA sales. Why should EA put more effort in it? It's not worth it for them. We are lucky they didn't abandon FIFA altogether after one or two iterations, so people at least have the choice to buy it for the Switch.
  • FIFA on the Switch compares to ~FIFA 15 on other consoles. It doesn't look pretty. And it's barebones, compared to current iterations.
But it has more fun gameplay than on any other console.
I've been playing FIFA online for 7 years now. I started on PS3, then on the Xbox One, then I abandoned it after FIFA 17. Unfortunately, the online part of Ultimate Team (the most popular game mode) has a built-in handicap system, and it became stronger and stronger every year.
In the end, I felt like I didn't play anymore but the cheating handicap system decided the results of every second-third game. It was way too much.
(Before anyone says that I simply sucked at it, I didn't. I won the highest tier Online Cup/Championship every year.)
In my opinion, the Switch version isn't plagued that much by that system (it's present, I can tell when I score/concede a goal that was assisted by it, but it doesn't happen that often than on the other consoles).
  • FIFA is a live game. So it wouldn't probably work as a DLC.
It changes players attributes weekly (in certain game modes), to represent the performance of the real players.
In Ultimate Team, there are new tasks/cards every week, too.
So it's not like we don't get a completely new experience every year. We get all that.
We just don't get new graphics, gameplay or game modes.

In my opinion, FIFA offers a lot.
Which other game lets you choose from 15.000 characters? It has that many real players!
It has hundreds of real teams!
It has many real competitions, it lets you be players, goalkeepers or even managers throughout whole careers!

I put 1500+ hours in it every year.

So we can badmouth it and support Pokemon instead (which looks like an ugly game from the PS2 era) - or buy FIFA, so maybe, in the future we can get NHL or Madden, too, on the Switch - which would be a dream come true (to me, at least).

Re: Nintendo Download: 21st May (North America)

construx

Umm.. Where is Europe?

For me, the weekly store update with the sales is the most important part of this site.
If you don't get a PR email in time, why not just do it by hand?

It's bad enough that sometimes we don't get the mid-week updates here (not every publisher starts a sale or publishes a game on Thursday) - but not getting the 'big' weekly update is just ridiculous for a dedicated site this big.

Thank God for DekuDeals.
Manually browsing through the hundreds of sales on the console's hardly functioning eShop page literally takes an hour. Every time.

Re: EA Play Live Goes Digital This June - Expect World Premieres, News And Much More

"they are never going to release relative new games for the Switch. The best they can do is port over PS3 / XBOX 360 era games"

I hate to break this to you, but other companies do the exact same thing.

The AA/AAA games we have from the current generation (from 2014) are a Doom, a Wolfenstein, a Dragon Ball, a Mortal Kombat, a Witcher and maybe a couple else.

We don't have any CODs, none from this gen's Assassin's Creeds, GTA, Red Dead Redemption II, Mafia, Just Cause, Far Cry, Jurassic Park, Devil May Cry 5, Kingdom Hearts, Dying Light, Tomb Raider, Prey, Hitman, Deus Ex, Resident Evil VII, Batman Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, Dishonored 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Dark Souls 3, Metal Gear Solid V - just to name a few, or 30 if you count all of these current third party games/series.

It's clear as day that it's not EA's fault.
It's Nintendo's.

Re: Random: Switch Fans React To EA's Partnership With Google Stadia

construx

To those who still don't understand why EA supports one platform and not the other:
Money.

Nintendo doesn't pay companies to publish games on their platform. (As you can see from the lack of third party AA/AAA support.)
Microsoft and Sony do.
And now Google, too, probably.

Besides, it's only a streaming service.
It's not like they have to make a game from scratch (as they would have to, for the Switch).

Re: Mini Review: Mystic Vale - Green-Fingered Players Take Note

construx

Is this one anything like Green Thumb Cards?
I loved that game!
But since the developer went under, it can't even be played on new PCs now (program wants an 16 bit environment and cannot run on 64 bit Windows)..

I would give money to anybody who either makes a similar game (it was very simple, yet a lot of fun) on a modern PC - or, even better, on the Switch.

Re: Burnout Paradise Remastered Finally Pulls Up On Nintendo Switch This Year

construx

@NullPointerExcep

  • There will be no other HD Burnout game ports. There aren't any on other consoles, either. The only existing HD Burnout beside Paradise is Revenge - but that's also only 720p, and a very early HD game (Xbox 360, from 2006, when PS3 hadn't existed yet...). Still, it's my favorite - but EA won't bother with the remasters of the other SD entries because there isn't a gazillion dollars in it for them.
  • Everybody should know about Dangerous Driving!
They're made by the same guys (now independently), so the series are basically the heart and soul of Burnout, finding a new life!
Please support the developers and buy their game when it comes out on Switch (or right now on any other console, where their games are already available)! They deserve it so much!

Re: Burnout Paradise Remastered Finally Pulls Up On Nintendo Switch This Year

construx

I wish it was.. literally any other entry of the series.
This may be the worst one (minus the first), I may have it in 4K on X1X - but I'm still pretty sure I'm gonna buy it on the Switch.

Meanwhile, the guys who created Burnouts will release their own game on the Switch, too.
They make the Dangerous Driving games now that they're free from EA.
Of course, EA kept the Burnout name.
But there probably never will be another one.
Thanks, EA..

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Strategy Games

construx

I love strategy games but only 1 is on Switch of my all-time favorites (Civ 6).
What else would we need on the Switch?

  • Heroes of Might&Magic series (literally any of them - III HD had been published on phones and tablets anyway)
  • King's Bounty (a bit similar to HoMM, an obvious second choice)
  • Age of Empires (Nintendo DS had a turn-based version, PS2 had the good old II, they're remaking them now anyway)
  • Majesty (this has been available for mobiles beside the PC versions, too)
  • Settlers series (the classic DS version was fun, too)
  • Anno series (it was also available for the DS)
  • SimCity series (detto)
  • Advance Wars (yep)
  • Disciples (DS port was in the works but never had been published)
  • Warlords Battlecry series (the best RTS you've never played)
  • Tropico series (it's available on other consoles, so why not on the Switch yet?)

The list could go on but it's obvious how lacking Switch's strategy library is compared to PC, mobiles, other consoles or, well, even the Nintendo DS...

Re: Review: Murder By Numbers - Ace Attorney Meets Picross In This Engaging Detective Adventure

construx

I like it when they combine a puzzle game with a story!
I liked the Puzzle Quest games, I liked Hunie Pop and Kotodama, too.

So I bought this game instantly, even though I didn't know anything about it or its publisher.
But I have to say, it's a lot of fun! If you liked the trailer, you'll like the game!

Now I wish somebody made a Sudoku game with a story!

PS: I only have one technical problem so far: when there is more than one screen of text, sometimes it doesn't stop after the first screen but it vanishes and continues with the second screen of text. When this happens, it's almost impossible to read the whole text in the first screen.
I hope they'll release a patch for that.

Other than that, I really like this game!

Re: Nintendo Download: 5th March (Europe)

construx

I bought Murder By Numbers and already played it for hours.
It's a bit like Ace Attorney mixed with picross.
I'm having tons of fun with it!
It's a quality game. I don't know how long it is but it has already exceeded my expectations based on its price tag.
