Update: We now have a solid release date, for Japan at least: June 11th. That's tomorrow, you guys! Bury with me my money, indeed.
Original Story [Thu 19th Mar, 2020 12:15 GMT]: Fans of six-shooters and saddlebags will be pleased to learn that Konami's seminal arcade shooter Sunset Riders is heading to the Nintendo Switch in the near future.
Released in arcades in 1991, this side-scrolling shooter takes place in the Wild West and was ported to the Mega Drive / Genesis and SNES in 1992 and 1993 respectively.
It's coming as part of Hamster's excellent Arcade Archives series, which already includes other Konami hits such as Bells & Whistles, Life Force and Mr.Goemon.
It has also been confirmed that vertically-scrolling shooter Trigon (also known as Lightning Fighters) is coming to the Switch as well, alongside Gradius.

Sunset riders is a great game. It's like contra but with cowboys:)
Amazing. Truly amazing. Can't wait for Sunset Riders.
Fantastic news, will be a day 1 purchase for me.
Sweet, this is really cool, thanks Konami.
Great game, I just wish they would add online play to these rereleases.
as long as they price it more sensibly than Lion King/Aladdin was priced (I know it's not Konami)
Sweet, always wanted to play it but its a bit too expensive for me on console lol. Would have been nice if it got a remastered version as well like with Wild Guns Reloaded, but ah well. I'll be picking it up anyway!
I am willing to pay money for konami classics, but not these. Please bring your arcade Beat en Ups so I can further expand my Capcom + SNK+Sega retro beat em up collection on the Switch.
@bigcalsworld just what I was about to comment. Great, yes, but MUCH better if handled in the same way as recent Wild Guns and Ninja Saviours remasters.
Can this get a physical release?
Day one for me!!
Oh hell yes!
Give us Turtles in Time please.
Now this is a classic! I can't wait to have it on my Switch!
@quinnyboy58 This is part of Hamster's Arcade Archives, so the price should be more or less the same as all their previous releases.
Fantastic. Nothing else to say NL
Yes Sunset riders brilliant game have arcade, Megadrive, Snes version. So may pick this up for portability use.
I remember playing it in the arcade, it was fun.
Holy crap, I got a nosebleed when I read this. Still got my Sunset Riders SNES cartridge.
Come on, TMNT! You can do it!
I'm beyond excited for this. I loved sunset riders growing up and I haven't played it in years. Day 1.
Outstanding news!
Never played the arcade version. Interesting.
Greatest day ever. The SNES version was amazing, the arcade was perfect!
Nice! Still own this on SNES, it's an incredibly rare cartridge these days.
HOWDY! Hope it's the 4-player version, really hype up for this.

This gives me hope for the other Konami arcades that are licensed (sorry 1Up Arcades, but I just can't pay $400 bucks for the TMNT arcade).
Loved this game as a kid! Definitely a must buy!
@KingBowser86 Alright! We got another TMNT supporter. Wouldn't be cool if they somehow combined the two arcade games so that they follow one storyline!
Never playing the arcade version, still got the snes version on my shelf. Excited to get this ASAP.
Oh my yes! Please let it be online multiplayer as well...
Great news. Especially as the Genesis/Megadrive and Super Nintendo versions cost a lot !
Sunset Riders at last!
But please don't push VS Wrecking Crew even further because of this announcement as usually happens.
Oh awesome! This game was great, not only on the Arcades, but both the SNES and MegaDrive ports were great fun too, despite only giving a 2 player mode rather than the 4 player mode in the arcade version.
Played Sunset Riders with my younger brother, fun game! Will be purchasing it.
Would rather Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa
Cool to see.
Too bad there is almost zero chance its cartoon-license pseudo-sequel Wild Cowboys of Moo Mesa will come as well.
Gradius, finally. Hope they bring 2 and 3 soon as well.
Would love Blood Brothers up there to,
One of my favourite arcades games of the time and similar to Sunset Riders, don't know if Data East could help with that,
And when (fingers crossed) are we going to get both Sin and Punishment games
I’ll get Sunset Riders day one! And I hope it’s the 4 player version!
Nice, I always wanted to play this. And it’s another game from the 90’s.
Superb! I played it a few times in the arcade back in the day, I don't think I ever got very far.
I think this might be Hamster's most 'modern' release yet?
I haven’t got any Arcade Archives releases in a bit, but Sunset Riders will be a day one purchase.
If they could put out some of the licensed beat’em ups, like The Simpsons, TMNT or Aliens vs Predator, I’d be all over those as well.
@skrax Have you ever considered that perhaps those who are happy to see games from their youth come back and those who complain about the price of remakes, are not the same people? Or that perhaps, those who do enjoy playing old games, enjoy playing modern games too? Doesn't have to be one or the other!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been begging for this for 2 decades!
Everybody buy this! Its a great arcade game if you're a fan of 90s Konami, Contra, and/or their 4 player games like TMNT, Simpsons, etc.
Aleluya! I love the Snes version and this one is better, I'll get it for sure!
@OorWullie Not even close. They releases some of the King of Fighters games from the early 2000s.
@ss213 Sunset Riders is like those games, only cowboys and guns instead of punching.
@Angelic_Lapras_King I was meaning from the Arcade Archives line, I should have mentioned that. Most of the games are from the 80's, with a few very early 90's. I just skimmed the article, I'm surprised to see it released in 91. I would have said around 93.
@OorWullie Yeah, that would be when I was playing it when my local swimming pool centre had it. Was so bummed that the MD/SNES version skyrocketed in cost even though they were censored so its been a long 25+ years waiting to play it again.
They won't run short of arcade games from that era thats for sure. Not to mention they don't really do that many if any 3D graphics releases and 2D arcade games really died down in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I'm not a huge fan of this game personally, but it does give me hope for Switch ports of other Konami arcade games such as Mystic Warriors, Violent Storm, and Metamorphic Force even though they're much more obscure. I technically have access to those titles but would rather play them 100% legally.
Of course I also want licensed games like TMNT, Turtles In Time, The Simpsons, and X-Men, but realistically I don't see that happening, at least for $8 a pop. Three of those games and a remake of TIT were released for PS3 and Xbox 360 so I wouldn't rule them out completely, but licenses are expensive, and the likelihood of them being ported again anytime soon is too low to get my hopes up.
@MysteryCupofJoe Cheapskate! 😉
I’d love a Sunset Riders HD remake!
This is amazing news. TMNT next please.
Yes, definitely getting this day one. I still own the Genesis and Super NES ports but to have an arcade accurate version is fantastic.
Bury me with my money.
@MysteryCupofJoe @KingBowser86 @Torakaka Arcade1Up did made a arcade cabinet for TMNT and Turtles in Time.
@Kanbei Only downside to the Hamster's releases... still at least Konami remembered this game at last
Maybe there is a god!
At least somebody heard me..
Day 1 buy.
Next, somebody please port Cadillacs & Dinosaurs for the Switch, too!
@LaytonPuzzle27
Tiny Arcade is also planning on releasing one of their tiny cabinets with the first TMNT, if you want a portable version.
Yessssss Awesome!!! Sunset Riders finally!!! Day 1 obviously!!!
6/10/20 update!! Oh yea! Immediate Switch purchase and I’ll grab it on PS4 as well!!! Thank you Hamster!! Keep em coming!!
The SNES port was excellent and did a good job replicating the arcade, but it is good to see the arcade version of the game released like this.
@LaytonPuzzle27 Unless I want to shell out $370.00 for something I could get on a home console for $20.00 I would rather download it.
@LaytonPuzzle27 Yeah, that's what I was saying. It is not practical to buy an arcade cabinet for $400 to play two 15-30 minute games. I want those games on the e-shop. I admit the arcades look nice but not practical for most to have in the house.
@Toy_Link I just looked at that. Really? Would someone really enjoy playing the whole game like that?
Cherrio Ol' Chap!
I hate Konami so much. They re-release everything but Suikoden. C’mon man, throw us a freaking bone.
@LaytonPuzzle27 Very true! Although I find myself pining for gamepad controls over loosey-goosey arcade sticks (and game mechanics, for that matter). TMNT II NES and TMNT IV SNES have more precision to its timings and hitboxes whereas the arcade games feature movement and timings that feel like they've hit the Vacation Juice a bit too hard.
@KingBowser86 I think TMNT 2 on NES loses too much from the arcade game, but that's me. You are correct that home versions were often more fair. Most obvious is that Konami arcade games would increase the size of the enemy waves the longer the player lasted, and it could be quite ridiculous. But more sinister than that, I've played enough X-Men arcade to know that when bosses are nearly defeated, their collision detection will be disabled for an attack so that the boss does not take damage and will likely get a cheap hit on the player(often taking a life/credit). I have tested it and repeated it many times. I still love the game, though.
@skrax They wouldn't make them if they didn't sell (to people like me) so your perspective is kind of redundant.
Terrific news.
Now I know what I'll be using my gold coins on.
@sdelfin Oh for sure, the NES TMNT2 and TMNT3 lose some animation frames and are blocky (yet the gameplay is still very serviceable even if the games go on a bit too long). TMNT IV SNES is a masterpiece port, though. Cuts back on the need for spamming the instakill moves, has just the right length of playtime, and flows better than the arcade game with its added detours.
@KingBowser86 I did have and enjoy TMNT 2 on NES in its time and I did beat it back then, so it's not like I didn't have fun with it. I didn't enjoy it as much going back to it, but I still love the arcade game. I pretty much agree about Turtles in Time. For a while, I didn't like the arcade version much, though I've come to enjoy it. They did make a lot of improvements and add some nice creative touches and it's an excellent games. There are a few minor things I'd change, but those would mostly be small things.
Holy crap! I played this in a arcade every night when I was on holiday as a kid but could never remember the name of it. Day one for sure!
Day 1 purchase for me. So thrilled.
This was one of the rootin'est, tootin'est hum-dingers of an arcade game that ever was.
Day 1 (if the price is right).
Most aca announcements have a handful of comments. This announcement 77+ comments. Please release better games and we will support them through our wallets.
You got me! I have been wanting them to move onto this era.
Sunset Riders is one of Konami's best! I'm thrilled by this announcement.
Gradius is already on the Switch though in Konami's Arcade Classics Collection.
Yes! Punches the air! This is my fav game of all time!
Day one! Now tell us when.......?
@Angelic_Lapras_King I get your point, and I can agree with it to some degree, although I see it more as a walk n gun than a beat em up, so it doesn really give me the spice that I look for when I feel like playing a 2d or 2.5d beat em up. I've tried some of the indie beat em ups on the switch, and they feel like they are missing something that made the retro ones so addictive. That's why whenever a listen that publishers are bringing back their retro catalog I get pumped for beat em ups (because having them on the go makes them even more playable).
PD: I am very hyped and at the same time afraid for streets of rage 4. I really hope Sega gets it right (algthough I dont really like the art of the game) and the game sets the new standard for modern "classik" beat em ups.
This and Turtles in Time are easily my favorite arcade games of all time. Can't wait to BURY ME WITH ME...MONEY some more. It never gets old.
Finally, after almost 30 years, I'm gonna try to 1CC this!
Ooh sweeeet! Do want. 👍👍👍
No release date?
i hope it's like the other releases, which means it's a port of the original Arcade, and not the SNES or MD versions (great too but the arcade much better), does anyone know if that will be the case? I mean they always release the Arcade version?
I am aghast this game isn't already part of the Switch Online SNES selection.
It would be nice if Konami carried on with the retro releases (I don’t expect much quality from their new offerings). Turtles in Time and Batman Returns are unlikely due to licensing, but would love to see Mystical Ninja, Suikoden, Vandal Hearts, and Azure Dreams.
Saying that, this is Konami so I hold out no hope.
Fingers crossed for the rest of the world too. Loved this game back in the day!
@MrGawain Gosh, I'd love to see Suikoden 2 on Switch...
I'd say I want a new Suikoden, but as long as the IP belongs to Konami, I don't have any hope lol
Now we just need Turtles in time, not much chance though.
@Pod This will be the arcade version, not the SNES port.
Surely Gradius was the headline release?
Yes!
Awesome arcade game!
Better than red dead redemption =D
@Torakaka For that matter, give us a TMNT Classics Collection: 1. TMNT (NES). 2. TMNT II: The Arcade Game (NES), 3. TMNT III: The Manhattan Project (NES), 4. TMNT II (Arcade). 5. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (SNES), 6. TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan (Gameboy), 7. TMNT: Tournament Fighters (SNES), 8. TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist (Genesis)
Just a terrific side scrolling action game.
Now I know what I'll be using my gold coins on.
I betcha the Super NES version will be available many months after the HAMSTER version release just to say yeah you either get arcade perfect or online play. You can't have both.
Doesn't everyone already have this game??? It was released both on the Sega Mega Drive and the SNES. Konami should release the sequel, "Wild West Coyboys of Moo Mesa", an excellent game which has never been ported to a home system.
Maybe not a great time to release a game with certain outmoded themes.
That’s awesome, but I wish someone other than Hamster was publishing it. Needs online multiplayer.
Best music ever!
Let's hope they add online multiplayer!
Fantastic.
Instant buy, love this game
.
I want this game, hopefully it’s soon.
I was certain this one wouldn't have been rated before the CERO closure. Glad it has been cleared.
Now I can use 40 euros of eShop currency plus gold points to get 6 games I really want. Not knowing when (because it's a when, not an if) Arcade Archives Bubble Bobble will be released, I pick Sunset Riders, In the Hunt, Pooyan, Vs Wrecking Crew, Vs Balloon Fight and Twinbee.
@Damo
Oh I am aware. ^^
Just wanted to point out that the SNES game ought still be a priority!
@TheWingedAvenger And that was a licensed game, based on the cartoon of the same name, so you'll never see it anywhere.
@TheWingedAvenger Neither the MD/Gen or SNES Sunsetriders was a 100% faithful arcade port, though the SNES version is the closest (and is actually slightly harder than the arcade). That's the big attraction for people who look forward to these arcade releases. We either got a not-100%/reworked/disappointing home port in the past or none at all, outside of emulation.
@Pod If it is being worked on, I'd reckon it'd be either in Nintendo's (the team working on the NSO releases), or M2's care (if another Konami Collection comes out).
Will the Japanese game have an English option or should I wait for its release on the NA eshop?
@technotreegrass Go for it if you want to. As long as you start the game with your NA profile, the Arcade Archive launcher screen will default to english. The launcher typically lets you choose to play the worldwide (english) release or the Japanese release.
@technotreegrass according to Wikipedia, it is releasing in all regions tomorrow. Hopefully it’s reliable
One of my all-time favorite games!
@Gerald according to GoNintendo site, it should be a worldwide release tomorrow! Yes indeed! 😊👍 standard $8 price!
Please let it release soon
@technotreegrass wait it should be tomorrow for North America too 😊
@NinChocolate give it a rest, it’s a goddam video game
arcade version is day one for me !!
I still remember seeing that animated intro in the arcade. I was hooked.
Brilliant game fortunately I have SNES, MEGADRIVE, ARCADE.
@masterLEON That would be the Nintendo European Research and Development team in Paris, formerly known as Actimagine, the company who created the Mobiclip video codec for mobiles and game consoles. Now specialising in middleware and retro system emulation for Nintendo systems.
@OorWullie The most modern Arcade Archives release is IREM's In the Hunt, released in 1993.
@antster1983 Cheers for that. I was wondering about that again just yesterday.
So where is it!?
The one Konami property I'd most love to see revived. (Sorry, Castlevania.)
Getting it as soon as it becomes available.
@ricklongo It's available!
Was playing this on my groovymame only last night, weirdly enough!
Great little game to be fair.
