In today's episode of 'gaming mashups we never expected to see', we share the news that Atari classic Pong is headed to Nintendo Switch in the form of an RPG.
PONG Quest is "a humorous new RPG reimagining of the flagship arcade classic" that's set to launch on Switch and other platforms this spring. The game has you exploring a fantasy world where you'll encounter a variety of paddle opponents and take them on in heated "RPG-esque" battles. There are even special, unlockable balls and costumes to unlock, the former of which are said to add more strategy into the mix.
Here's an official description:
It’s PONG like you’ve never thought it could be! Immerse yourself in a whole new world of PONG-inspired fun where you’ll adventure as a brave young paddle traversing a variety of treacherous dungeons, all loosely based on classic Atari hits, including Asteroids, Centipede, and more. Your journey will dictate the fate of PONG World as you reveal the mysteries of… the Spooky Door!
We don't have an exact release date yet, but we do know that it's planned to launch for $14.99 when it arrives this spring.
We certainly never would have expected to see a Pong RPG way back when. Will you be keeping an eye on this one? Let us know with a comment.

'Pong is so yesterday... "
Broke: "...the Spooky Door!"
Woke: The Scary Door
This looks awful.
But the thumbnail reminded me of Mr. Domino. Man, that was a great game.
Pong without rotary controls doesn't work.
Plus, do we need a Pong game that has RPG elements?
Heh, this looks pretty fun actually. I'll keep an eye on it.
O hell no. This has zero appeal. Looks like PONG boss separated everyone into teams for ideals on a new game. After all had failed to make anything good, said Boss then threw it all together to recover his losses.
I was down with the concept but the visuals are extremely off-putting. I know they're not important if the game is fun but...yeesh. Some of it looks debug still.
Expanding the world of Pong with actual characters sounds like an awful idea on paper, but then again the same could be said about Pac-Man and that turned out well, so I'll keep my eyes peeled.
A Centipede RPG was one of the canceled Jaguar games I've heard rumored.
I will wait to see more. Atari right now does not have the best of reputations. But I also enjoy strange games.
Between this and their new hotel, it sounds like Atari is getting desperate to remain even remotely relevant.
At first I thought the idea was dumb. Seeing it in action still has me a bit skeptical, but it looks pretty cool.
ATARI! BRING BACK ASTEROIDS, YOU SWINE!
This looks like something and old dude, whose last video game was Pong, would think 'humorous' looks like.
Atari got into the crazy pills again. Depending on the price, it might pass as an interesting novelty.
@KingMike I've got a Jaguar, but I missed that rumor. The Jag was sorely missing the RPG genre, so it would have been interesting to see. The only ones it had came out during it's death throws, plus I'm not sure Towers II and Highlander are really what most people expect when you say "RPG."
I was excited at first but my god that is ugly AF.
I'll stick with the Bit.Trip series!
We might need to call Caddicaurus for this one
On paper, this sounds absolutely bloody amazing!!!
On paper.
I don't even know what to say. I don't really know how you could make a full modern game out of pong, but they somehow, somewhat did?
What even?
Hopefully they’ll release some paddle controllers to go along with it.
Dang it, I was hoping for Pong Quest to be Battle Royale!
I guess I'm in the minority here on this one, because I think this looks like it could actually be fun. Its obviously a budget title, and the price shown above of $15 verifies that. If the dialogue between pong characters is good, this could be a fun little diversion title for me. (Although with tax time, my backlog is massive now with new games bought but not played yet.)
Isn't Atari supposed to be competing against Nintendo in the console Market. I know they haven't released their new system yet but why are they releasing games on their competition. Atari is silly they don't know if they want to actually compete against Nintendo or put software on Nintendo systems
@Highlar I was just about to say the same thing, lol. I think I am the only one (other than you now) who actually think this looks like fun! I am willing to toss $15 for a fresh idea that kills some time.
It looks crazy. At least they are trying to innovate. It might be fun but I think it will appeal more to those that have some nostalgia for old Pong.
This would just confuse my father who loved pong on the atari.
I just realized that this could be a disaster with the wonky Left Joycon that Nintendo still has not fixed correctly.
Those sure are...visuals...
No normal Pong included? Pass.
Looks lame. It will be one of those games that is always on sale under a dollar.
This looks kind of fun.... But ok
Can't say that I ever found these Pong spinoff games to be any good. Pong is one of those things where it only works on the most basic level as a competitive game. Go beyond that and you are better off with a tennis game.
Funny... Just last night I saw a Watch Mojo piece on the Top 10 biggest Atari flops. Would this be #11?
@Amin_Parker Releasing games like this is essentially a safe bet for Atari. It probably won't bring in a ton of money but it will almost certainly make a profit. The new Atari VCS is probably at best a very high risk gamble. It will probably loose money, but if it somehow becomes successful, it could make a lot of money. But if they bet it all on the VCS, they'd probably go out of business. And releasing games on competitors' consoles isn't a new idea. Mattel released games for Atari even though they had their own Intellivision system, and Sega licensed it's games to be released for the TurboGrafX.
I’ll stick with Yoku’s Island Express and Creature in the Well for now.
But never say never...
I mean 15 years ago if you would of told me “Bejeweled meets Final Fantasy” and “it’s going to be critically acclaimed and ported to everything” it would of seemed “crazy”.
Maybe Atari is on to something here?
Kind of reminds me of Pinball Quest on the NES.
So outrageous it might just work.
Reminds me of Pong Kombat
I feel like I've seen this before on PC.
Well what do you know, for once they're not asking for money on Kickstarter to make this game.
I’ll wait for a review, but I am interested.
I'll get it in a sale
Yuck.
Atari's probably trying to make the industry crash again with gutter-tier garbage like this.
Leave Pong in 1972 where it belongs.
Considering the quality and quantity of superlatively superior games available nowadays, who would setting for the likes of this?
I thought it sounded like a terrible idea ... and then I saw the trailer, and I gotta say, it looks kinda fun. Hopefully there’s some Warlords in there
If I wanted to play a RPG with blocks in it, I'd play Adventure or 3D Dot Heroes.
That looks alright, I've been wanting a more substantial pong game for ages now. The only thing is the knob really made that a good game on the Atari, and I hope we get motion controls or LABO support since the analog joystick isn't going to do this game justice.
Did anyone else play Pong: The Next Level on the Playstation? I actually really enjoyed that game, and hoped that this was something in the same vein (though it doesn't look like it).
@Blarglemeister This exactly! I loved some of those PS1 Atari remakes, including Pong, Asteroids, Frogger, etc. The Pong one was great, especially the multiplayer. I wish they'd bring those to the Switch (or any other contemporary console, for that matter).
@kirbygirl I don't think I even realized that they made an Asteroids game during that time, but I loved Frogger and Pong. I would buy both of them off the eShop, immediately if they re-released them.
