Thank Zeus! I have no idea why this collection arrives half a year later than on the other consoles (it's not like they couldn't finish 25 year-old games for the Switch ), but I'm happy it will come because Sega Ages is not for me.
Finally, a decent retro collection for a decent price!
@MasterJay Just because I play a variety of games doesn't make me a retro gamer. If I want to play retro games, I have multiple opportunities without this one. Most of my play time does not consist of retro gaming.
@MasterJay
I've played them in the 80s. And in the 90s. Some of them on Wii, 3DS and Wii U, too.
I really think it would be time for Nintendo to move on. They've monetized everything in the 8-bit era, on multiple contemporary and stand-alone consoles.
Even SNES games would be a lot better and I didn't even say GameCube which would really be something.
Not to mention they need millions of subscribers in a very short time unless they want to see interest fade in their traditional online titles like Splatoon or Mario Kart.
If there aren't enough subscribers, people won't be able to play online or at least would have to wait for opponents longer. And that would be a downward spiral as the more people would be bored with that, the more would leave the service.
And that would pretty much hurt Nintendo.
I can't see how they want to achieve necessary numbers with NES games...
@MasterJay Retro gamers are a minority of gamers. I can't imagine why Nintendo would create a contemporary online subscription service for the majority and use these old games that will only interest a minority of them...
I would rather pay 40 bucks more for 24 Switch titles to play in a year...
Remember when Sony and Microsoft gave you 30 years old games with their online subscriptions? Haha, of course not because it never happened! They give you contemporary games you might actually want to play!
Gimme a 16-bit NHL game, any one, with online play and I'll be set for LIFE!
Seriously, I had a Megadrive in the 90s and one game cost a third of a monthly wage where I live so I didn't have a lot of games on it. That's why sports games were awesome back then, because they were never the same. I spent summer holiday months to play whole hockey seasons with 80+ games... I enjoyed it so much but my friends couldn't always join in. Playing it online would probably make me feel like 15 again.
Bought it! Great news! Keep publishing the good strategy games for the Switch!
For me, the Nintendo DS era was the console Golden Age - because of the many strategy games on it that were never available in handheld format before. But now we have both modes!
Heroes of Might & Magic, you're up next! (Please please please, Ubisoft!)
So, 40+ SMD games on other consoles cost 20 bucks. 40 SMD games won't even be present on Switch but when they will, they will cost 280 bucks. HAHAHA, LOL, NO THANKS!
I can buy PS1 games on the Vita for 3.99. I can buy Xbox Classic games on the One X for 3.50.
I still have my Sega Megadrive machine from the '90s but no way I'm gonna buy these games separately for that much.
Give me a collection for a fair price. I'm done buying 20 year old games apiece for the umpteenth time for ridiculously inflated prices.
I wonder if there's a huge graphical difference between this and the first game. I think I'll probably start with the first if that's not too ugly on the Switch.
@justin233 Thank you for clearing this up for me. I can have a bad temper when I feel that a publisher wants to take more money from Switch owners than other console owners just because the Switch is a table+handheld combo and they know we like this control freedom so much, we will likely pay more.
Basically the only way Sega could convince me not to hate them for this, if they release the same games for approx. the same price on Switch. Or if they throw us some Sega CD / Saturn / Dreamcast goodies in their retro section. Or both.
What on Earth is Sega AGES and why is it so awful?!
PS4 and Xbox One just got a Sega Collection on disc with 40+ retro games.
Switch owners didn't, specifically because of this AGES nonsense.
Why can't we just have a normal collection like everybody else?
I wanna play a lot of Retro Sega games on the Switch but I sure as hell won't do it if it's gonna be some subscribing "service"...
@Don
Thankfully really, really slow.
After 6-7 hours of sleep, battery percentage goes down on mine only 1-2%. And that with Wi-Fi left on as I rarely feel the need to put the machine to airplane mode ( which would probably save more battery).
For the first few years that I had my 3DS, I've always switched it off after gaming. Since I realized how little sleep mode drains its battery, I've always left it in sleep mode after a gaming session.
I do the same thing now with the Switch. I literally never turn it off.
I honestly just decided yesterday not to buy World Conqueror X on sale because I'd rather wait for a Civ game to come out on the Switch - which I thought was impossible!
I still can't handle myself, sorry folks, this is probably news of the year for me.
@Frendo
HoMM 3 HD has long been available on iOS and Android. I have the iOS version.
The touch controls work well but (and that is a big but for me) to properly play the game, you constantly need the "right click" but unfortunately, it was very inconvenient for me on the iPad Mini. I did the gesture that was supposed to be the right click and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't and I usually couldn't see anything from my finger...
If I could use a proper mouse pointer with buttons and analogue stick control, I would be happy to buy HoMM 3 HD again on the Switch! (And any other HoMM entries as it is one of my all-time favorite game series!)
As for AoE, yes, an RTS is harder to control with an analogue stick. But since the Switch owners are probably not the hardcore fans of the series, I don't think that would be a big problem.
You can easily win on the lower difficulties without clicking on 8 places in 3 seconds.
Edit: Oh yeah, I just remembered: Age of Empires II was actually released on the PlayStation 2!
So it surely wouldn't be impossible to bring it on the Switch!
I guess two ways are possible: one is a touch screen control with tap and double tap (to simulate the left and right mouse click).
I don't have the iPad Civ VI but I'm pretty sure that's how it should work.
The other is physical controls where one of the analogue sticks works as a mouse cursor and the two bumpers are the left and right mouse buttons. I'm pretty sure this will get implemented as it would be impossible to play the game docked otherwise.
I used similar controls on the GPD Win to play Civ and it worked pretty well. (Not as convenient and fast as a mouse, though, of course. But it was never a problem for me.)
Please please please please bring Heroes of Might & Magic, Settlers, Age of Empires and any other decent TBS or RTS series on the Switch, too!
I would pay for all entries of Civilization on the Switch, even though I have most of them boxed or digital on PC/Steam (including the beautiful Civilization Chronicles compendium) because I really would like to have them on the go!
I bought all sorts of Windows tablets and UMPCs during the years (including the GPD Win and GPD Pocket) just to play my favorite strategies - but something was always missing (e.g. the resolution of the game couldn't fit into the resolution of the machine, or older entries weren't compatible with the newer Windows etc.) so I was unable to play them in their deserved glory.
I actually skipped Civ VI because Civ V looked way better to me (and I didn't want to learn yet another whole new strategy ) - but maybe that's the reason they could make it run on the Switch! Yaaay!
(If that's not the case, please bring us Civ V, too. Along with Civ IV, Civ III, Civ II and for the fun of it, the original Civilization! One can never have too much Civ anyway! Thank you!!)
I didn't buy them on 3DS because I've been waiting for a Switch release. I have the trilogy on iPad but somehow, I never felt the need to play games on that machine...
@Don I don't know the answer to this but you don't really need quicksaves on the Switch. You can just pause the game and put it into Sleep mode. The next time you want to use it, you'll continue exactly where you left off, without any waiting. No home console can do that. That is Switch magic.
I've played the first game on Xbox360 maybe and have the second on 3DS but abandoned it a long time ago. This might be the ultimate collection for me, HD, handheld/TV, however I want. That's why Switch is the greatest of the current consoles. At least, that's what I think.
I bought around 45 boxed games for 3DS and approx. 70 digital.
I have ~20 games (boxed+digital) on Switch already. (I didn't count free-to-play in those numbers.)
I think I'm supporting developers just fine.
New ideas are good but if the realization is on a subpar quality level, why should I care? I'll rather wait for a developer to make it in good quality instead. There are too many games already to have time for half-baked ones.
It's like you want people to see independent art movies because Hollywood can only repeat itself.
Regardless if that's true or not, Hollywood movies are still the most popular ones for a reason.
In this manner, I just want the most popular games to come out for Switch and those are (mostly) not the indie ones.
For those who want to play indies, there is no better place than on a Switch anyway.
As for the reviews, scores or not, since they put and end to user scores for eShop games, it's impossible for me to distinguish games I've never heard of. Even a thumbs up/down system would be a big help.
With 20+ new releases per week, it's now almost impossible to find games on Switch for yourself...
@aaronsullivan
Generally I'm not into indie games. I think there would be so much potential in normal and AAA third party games on Switch from Assassin's Creeds to CODs, GTAs and hundreds of others that are very popular on other consoles but we were never able to play them on the go before.
The Switch could (and hopefully can) revolutionize the way we play video games. It has such high potential.
I bought the machine because of FIFA 18. I played the series before on other consoles but never wanted to go back to those after playing it on the Switch. I have more than 1500 hours in it now.
I think it's a good thing that there are a lot of options to buy on the console. But that also means a lot of garbage games. And just like on Steam, it will be impossible to keep them separated after a while.
A couple of days ago, I bought a puzzle game for the Switch. You have to move different colored balls in it.
And that's it. That's the whole game.
It has a score of 7 on this site.

People may think a 3 dollar game can be an 8 but let's face it, it can't, compared to AAA games.

AAA titles, normal titles and indie titles are three different categories. And on Switch, we have countless of indie games from 0.99 to 14.99 and those are definitely different categories in terms of quality, too.
Great news, they just spared me 40 bucks! I have too many games on Switch already anyway. If I wanted one with motion controls only, I would just pick up one of my old Wii games and there's a reason why I don't do that anymore.
Fans here really take the news well that they'll have to pay 20 bucks per year for a service they are getting now for free. I haven't heard about dedicated online servers and I couldn't care less about NES games. Cloud save is free on other platforms. I've played FIFA 18 online on Switch for a year without a problem.
Basically, Nintendo saw how other consoles have millions of paying online users and they wanted some extra money, too. They won't do anything for it - but at least it's cheap?! Come on!
And let's not forget that people on PlayStation and Xbox have hundreds of online games to choose from. I couldn't name a dozen on Switch.

By the way: the control system of many activities gets more complex the more you play it. The game eases you in it, then let you master it. If you decide to want that.
