They had their best financial year ever in 2018. If you believe their full release they are cutting non-developer positions with a plan to increase developer positions so they can increase their software releases. They say explicitly than they plan to increase developer positions by 20% in 2019.
I don't know their management structure so they may be top heavy, but I think this is every workers fear. You go and work hard and your company is doing great and they still let you go because they didn't make enough. It also doesn't make a lot of sense in a vacuum as I'm guessing the non-developer positions support the developer positions. So it seems if one group was increasing the other would as well or at least wouldn't shrink.
The length of time and average age are impressive. They are getting young workers and keeping them.
I think it's impossible to actually get any useful information about the salary and work week. Being a salaried employee, my employer would likely say I work 40 hours a week when I work more than that typically. And we also have part time people. So if you take a part time person who works 20 hours a week and combine with my 40 you'd end up with 30 hours a week average which would not be a realistic expectation for somebody starting full time at my job.
I like my psvr. Yeah it's the budget vr but it just has enough realism to get immersion. I'd say that most psvr games look like they are ps2 games up to ps3 games with the blockbusters being in the latter category. I know nintendo has an art style that looks good in lower res but I don't think they can pull this off and have it be a good experience. Switch 2 is a possibility though.
Overall the lineup hasn't been terrible. But as a multi console gamer, the mid/lower games are everywhere and not a reason to buy a Switch in my opinion.
You are right about the terrible pace of VC content. Initially Wii had a pace of 3-5 games a week with multiple platforms supported. That would probably be appropriate today. But I think Nintendo will eventually spin off their retro catalog from Nintendo Online. For as bad as the value is now, an online retro catalog of 300+ games for $20/year would be crazy too good to be true value.
"Reggie, you're a cool guy, and honestly I think you are a good businessman overall. But this is a poor choice."
I honestly think he's just a PR person for Nintendo American. Nintendo of Japan makes all the decisions and he has to try to make them sound good to consumers whether they work well with our culture or not. I think that's why he's always acting surprised when people ask him about things like he didn't know people were interested in that. Because his orders from Japan is that it's not coming. So he tries to soften the blow rather than take up the cause. Because he likes his 6 figure job and all. I just can't honestly believe he is that detached from the fans desires.
"Unless Nintendo has been wildly misleading us for years, they should have the resources to do do more than this, either themselves or contracting another studio they trust. And are able to do it without harming their ability to produce new content."
This really does drive me crazy with Nintendo. Like the Switch, they come out the gates with Zelda/Mario, amazing games. But year 2 was basically Smash and year 3 is Metroid Prime 4. I get it, the Switch is cool hardware and people are excited about playing games on the go, but I hate dealing with the inevitable droughts Nintendo always has.
1. Poor Aspect Ratio 2. No Dpad 3. Poor start/select placement (for games like Punchout that are used within the game) 4. Poor A/B placement (I've always much preferred using Y/B on the Snes controller rather than B/A because your thumb rolls naturally) 5. Reversed A/B. Nintendo controllers always have had B first then A, but this has the other way.
I'm a retro lover, and I get why these things exist. But this seems like it was designed by someone who doesn't actually play games but just thought it would be a quick cash grab to make something retro.
Its not really a glitch. It was overscanned or in the area that our old tvs didn't show. Now our modern tvs do show it. Doesn't affect the game either way.
I don't really understand what this means. I mean Nintendo fans typically overloads any online support surveys and none of that matters. How do you show support for a product that doesn't and won't exist?
Not forever, just like the wii all digital content becomes innaccessible at some point. And these files are so small I can't imagine they'd take up any real server space.
That said this is a physical device. Another super easy implementation would be to put a tiny amount of flash memory (like amiibo) and at time of registering lock the generated stats down and tie to the nintendo account so you can't use to cheat or give to multiple people.
I guess I think the solution to people trying to get better stats is simple with our modern tech. Activate the code online and at that time tie the character and generated stats to the online activation. Thus if you delete and redownload you always get the same stats and would gain no benefit in regenerating stats.
There is not lack of common sense today compared to the past. A combination of internet anonymity with unprecedented access to share and post things results in people often sharing the worse things about humanity. Had the internet been around 50 years ago, I have no doubt that posts would be similar.
Admittedly not a Pokemon player so I wasn't aware that Nintendo had issued one time download codes in the past. But the idea is still shocking to me as someone who has downloaded alot and it seems its only been used by Nintendo. So I still hate it and hope it doesn't get supported because I buy many Nintendo items and don't want to see this model pushed to other games. Price is always subjective I guess, though the Pokeball seems way more limited than a standard joycon to me.
As mentioned above, redeemed once yes. But I've never seen DLC that I couldn't redownload at a later date. It's also really expensive for DLC. It's really anti-consumer and shouldn't be accepted and I hope it's not accepted by the community because one time download DLC should not become the norm. Is whining about the whiners the good part of the internet?
I thought gaming magazines were already dead. I did like the few magazines I got in the 90s. My parents would rarely buy me magazines so I would generally try to look at them quickly while they were shopping. In the mid-late 90s we got internet and I was amazed at what was all out there.
I know I like to harp on Nintendo for their pricing, but this is the downfall of big quick sales. I picked up Rabbids at launch and loved it. But it quickly dropped to 1/2 price with DLC. I emwant this game but I expect a similar fate. Will buy when $30.
Doesn't look usable in that case. I actually just got the hori dpad and I've been thinking how it makes the Switch feel more like a true 3ds replacement.
Did you see the C64 mini that is releasing soon? I have this feeling that it will probably suck, but yet I can't stop myself from getting irrationally excited about it.
That's kind of an extreme take. In the US, Amazon represents 5% of all sales. On their website, third parties result in 68% of the sales. So typically they have been great to small businesses by giving them a more beneficial model to reach straight to consumers.
No market is a true free market or capital market. An example of a monopoly is Microsoft and Apple. Those two companies have been fined and sanctioned by many governments for their practice. In theory this keeps them honest in regards to how they treat consumers. I'd worry more about companies that own technology than a retail marketplace. Amazon does some impressive stuff with their delivery system, but their sales of other peoples products isn't going to put everyone out of business. I'd be much more worried about their individual product offerings like Alexa, digital music, digital movies, and all their tech products. If you get invested in that ecosystem, it will be much harder to break. But really all their competitors like Apple are doing the same things on that front.
And honestly there has to be an inbetween. Amazon does alot of great things with their consumer benefits. Yeah, I'd like to see small businesses make strides to be more competitive. But I'm not willing to pay 50% more and not be able to return things or be forced to accept whatever terms they give out. It reminds me of healthcare (being in the US). Yeah, our society is out of shape, doesn't take care of ourselves, overuses healthcare. And I think that our health care companies are doing their best to keep costs down and give great health care. But the model isn't working. There needs to be innovation so things will improve. Amazon is a disrupter in the commerce market showing that people need to do better. And as a consumer I think it's gotten better to an extent as companies realize they need to compete with Amazon or go out of business. Could the scale tip too far and Amazon be the only place to shop? Maybe it does. But usually there are other innovative companies that come along and challenge and rarely does a company stay on top forever. Plus, maybe we as consumers will realize that 95% of the stuff we buy is crap and just stop buying as much.
Yeah, it was around 20 years ago. But it was terrible, extremely low poly stuff. I'm pretty sure I tried something at Cedar Point around then. And it wasn't good.
With the Nes, the buttons were side by side. Snes starting the diamond button layout. In the Snes re-release of Mario All-Stars, they let you use Y and B (Y acting as B, and B acting as A). This was a good deal more comfortable as you can use your thumb joint to roll on the buttons. I don't have Nintendo online so I can't try the use x button. But it seems like it's an oversight that the buttons are un-customizable as the button placement is pretty high on the Switch and might not feel ideal.
I didn't see it mentioned here. You can't use the dpad on the pro controller can you? To me that's a big oversight and unfortunate. There is no way I'm buying $60 controllers for 20 NES games. But I do have a pro controller and would prefer to play that way. Otherwise, my life in gaming is great. And this video shows quality emulation was created here.
Makes sense they would start coming out with VC now. Their big push to get people to get people online. If you haven't been interested by NES games, it's unlikely that a few more will convince you to get it. Plus, it's just unrealistic to think that Wii ($20), N64 ($10), Gamecube ($15?) games would be given with the online service. Also they are likely to take an approach similar to Sony/Microsoft where games roll off if you don't subscribe all the time. I just can't see this service in 3-4 years offering 200-300 games for free. I think it will be more limited to that. Online VC will be a flavor rather than an actual VC. This would also allow them to release full games if they'd like to go that route.
"Within NSO, there is no hardware to own. You're borrowing software. You don't own it. It's NOT the same thing."
What if I make a legal backup copy of the NES game I own and load that software onto the Switch, hardware that I legally own? One could side load emulators that don't use Nintendo's official emulators at all. A dumb idea either way unless you don't care on getting the Switch banned. But long term Nintendo will shut down the Switch online program anyway opening up opportunities to use the Switch hardware in ways it wasn't designed.
Of known games, ff7 is 1.36 gb, wild arms 300 mb, ridge racer 4 is 331 mb. Those are totals off ps3 psn. So those 3 games come to about 2 gb. It looks like there could be many rpgs and many of them were multi disc. Or they could come with smaller games.
I don't think the value is there and I'm not going to get it. But I think getting really upset is an overreaction too. It's a price increase for games simply.
Surprisingly, Switch is Nintendo's first console where the MSRP standard is $60. But Sony/Microsoft have had that standard since 2006. Instead of Sony/Microsoft raising the price of games to $70, they've locked features behind a membership paywall getting you to pay more than $60 for your games. Nintendo is now doing the same thing. So depending on how many games you buy, the actual cost is a small amount greater than $60. And if that is really such a big deal to you, then buy used games and hurt Nintendo alot more than boycotting this online program.
I've had trouble connecting my Switch to some wifi networks and to my hotspot phone. Vacation and cruises are times I could see the 7 day thing being difficult. But overall not huge as I don't really need to have access to Urban Champion to make a vacation enjoyable.
"Doesnt matter how its done elsewhere. That's elsewhere. If you stop paying for a service you cant expect services rendered to continue. Otherwise everyone would wait 6 months between re-subbing because hey, why not, they're gonna store my saves even when Im not paying, and if something happens, THEN I'll sub again. Like stop paying insurance and expect to still have coverage if something happens."
It may be minor in the grand scheme of things, but I'm not sure why you are attacking members who point out the competitors provide better service. Providing a longer term is just great for the customer and may be good for business. I mean if something (though unlikely) happened to my PS4 in the 6 month window, you can guarantee I'm re-upping my sub to get my save data. And save data takes up almost no space on a server anyway.
I think it's funny you used insurance as an example. Because I've had great customer service with my insurance company. I've called and let them know I've gone to potentially buy a vehicle. They said thanks for letting us know. Call back within a couple days if you purchase and give us the vin # and we'll do the documentation. In the meantime you are covered. Did they have to do that? No, they didn't. But that's great and it builds customer loyalty. Most services don't actually cut you off immediately. If you are late on a utility bill, cell phone, or credit card bill all will still work on day 1 after you miss payment.
Just so we are clear though, the price of the game has always included the online component before. Nobody ever got anything free. Some games now are online only and many have a big online component and you can't just buy the single player campaign. Nintendo is a business and they've decided the way to maximize profits is to charge $20 for online. Nothing more, nothing less.
Nintendo has Gamecube and Wii games emulated on the Shield in China. The Shield shares the basic architecture of the Switch. The Switch is slightly downclocked which may give a little trouble with the Wii games, but I'd expect the Gamecube games would be easy to get running on the Switch.
I can't really say I love the layout of the Switch controller in general. But making it portable required some concessions to the form factor. If you hold a Switch next to a 3DS the layout is pretty similar. I've had no problem using a dpad in tough games like Megaman on the 3DS.
Directional buttons are fine for slow games like picross. In games that require quick response, a dpad has a nub in the middle which prevents all 4 directions getting pressed at once. A technique I use alot is to roll from left to right on a dpad. It allows a very small movement to output from left to right on the game. If you do this with the buttons you are likely to hit both directions and maybe all 4 directions. Games don't like this and it either doesn't respond at all or responds in a funky matter. Same with diagonals. Alot of time my thumb is in the middle, not edges of the dpad. As such, it requires alot more motion to hit diagonals with buttons and it requires alot more precision since with a dpad I can put pressure on the middle and just more pressure to the side I want to move. With buttons pressure in the middle means hitting 4 buttons.
Making a prediction 25% over Nintendo's? I mean I'd think manufacturing would be an issue for that target. Nintendo has to make 25 million this year to be able to sell that many. The original DS and Wii are the only products Nintendo made that surpassed 25 million a year. It looks like from wiki that it was year 3 for each of them to hit that target.
He seemed to know Switch sales would miss target. He missed that profit would be up because of strong software sales. The stock market in general has been a bit of a roller coaster ride recently and I think he has 30 days or so to pay up on this bet. So he may yet do okay.

"*** Cloud backups for 99.95% of my games"
You have 2000 Switch games and only 1 doesn't have cloud saves? That is pretty solid.

Wow, you deleted all your comments except the first one that got a bunch of likes?
Re: NES Games On Switch Playable For Up To Seven Days Without Internet Connection

Interesting that the 3 gamecube games you've listed have all been rereleased.

They are emulation, not remasters.

Nintendo has Gamecube and Wii games emulated on the Shield in China. The Shield shares the basic architecture of the Switch. The Switch is slightly downclocked which may give a little trouble with the Wii games, but I'd expect the Gamecube games would be easy to get running on the Switch.

Re: Video: Can Homemade Wireless Hacks Work On Hori's D-Pad Joy-Con Controller?
@paihia
I can't really say I love the layout of the Switch controller in general. But making it portable required some concessions to the form factor. If you hold a Switch next to a 3DS the layout is pretty similar. I've had no problem using a dpad in tough games like Megaman on the 3DS.
Re: Video: Can Homemade Wireless Hacks Work On Hori's D-Pad Joy-Con Controller?
@thesilverbrick
Re: Japanese Analyst Predicts Switch Sales To Surpass Nintendo's Forecast
