Pretty hard to get a good performing reasonable sized BVM at a reasonable price. It's not really a mainstream solution as the super nt could potentially be.
It's pretty clear you don't understand what an FGPA is or the benefit of it. It's not even remotely close to your idea that they remake the exact chip in the Snes (because accoding to you that was the only way to ensure it reacts the same) shrink it, add 21 games (on a cartridge none-the-less), 2 original controllers, and an hdmi scaler and sell for no more than $70 in 2017. An FGPA solution shows up in 2018 for $230 with 2 games and no controllers and it proves you are right? The joke was on your unrealistic cost, not that it couldn't be done. Now please stop taking up real estate unless you have something to add about the FGPA Snes discussed in the article.
When a standalone computer with a cartridge slot and two snes controller ports with lag free free software emulation hits for under $200 I'll be interested. Until then I'm going to continue to be amazed by the value of FGPA and the lagfree benefits that the article you linked mentioned isn't possible on current PCs.
I do wish it was easier to get ahold of too. I hate seeing people scalp these. I just think it's hard for a small company with limited capital making a niche product to hit demand. I'm leaning towards buying an nt mini too but I'm in the waiting boat with you there. Such is life.
I don't think they know and they probably get asked this a ton. They are a really small company and can only do batch runs of these when they are able to get manufacturing time and when they have enough demand to say sell 5,000 right away. They don't seem to have the capital to sit on inventory or pay a manufacturer upfront. Their development team is literally Kevtris, so 1 person.
It be nice if they had better communication. Maybe I'm just used to the typical poor communication you get from niche companies like the company that makes the Everdrive. Bought mine on black Friday sale, and didn't get any communication until it shipped 3 months later. So maybe my expectations are low. But if I get a world class product, it's okay with me. I can wait.
I'm not a technical person, but I was a believer when I got my AVS. Software emulation that exists always adds lag. Maybe its possible as technology advances to get rid of it but I've never been able to beat Mike Tyson's Punchout in an emulator. It wasn't even close with the nes classic. Then the AVS comes and I can beat it handily on most tvs (with the HDTV lag being the limiting factor). It's awesome it feels so good to play because everything is so responsive. The games truly feel different and I don't think people would rag on retro controls as much if they experienced this rather than cheaper emulation.
It also interacts with the cartridge in real time. So if a game saves you can just pull it out and plop it in another system and it'll work perfectly. No playing around will extra saves.
Also if you look at somewhere emulation, most emulators have a bunch of workarounds for different games. Nintendo's solution for the virtual console was to create a different emulator for each game. Hardware emulation is different in that as long as the mapper is correct, all games for the mapper should work perfectly. The biggest issues the Original NT mini had was with games with custom hardware such as the Everdrive. So day 1, it didn't work with an FGPA piggybacked into it. But it does now.
He was clearly very good at playing games and honestly I think he's a lot better person than presented in King of Kong. I think the movie decided they needed a villain and he played the part. There was one article where it was basically brought up that they asked him a question and he gave an answer. And they were like, let's try something else. And again. And again. And he finally says something like Billy always has a plan and they are like that's the one. And then people are all like what an overconfident jerk. I think it's unfair.
Either way, maybe true, maybe not, I don't really care. I'm also not sure the benefit of these witch hunts since he's not even close to record holder anymore.
It still feels it's too expensive. The parts look pretty intricate. I could see many having difficulty implementing these designs even with the drawings due to miscuts or the material not having enough support. Also need calrification on if $80 is for these 5 labos and future labos will need another $80 purchase or if the software will be updated and it's a 1 time cost. I'm still interested because it looks unique, but I'll need to see more to convince me it's worth buying at this price.
I expected to hate it, but I don't. Pretty creative but I'll hold off until I can get it onsale. I'm sure software is involved, but looks like $70 is too much for what it offers.
"With 4k you're betting a foreign technology will be successful that's the difference. " Nintendo didn't invent motion control. Nintendo didn't invent touch screens. Nintendo didn't invent portable devices. Heck the Switch is basically a Sheild2. Nintendo always bets on themselves with the ways they use foreign technologies.
"You claim in your above post, that once it becomes standard Nintendo will take part in 4k. And that's what I've been saying all along, so what's your point?" I've agreed that they'll do it but disagree with the way they said it. My point is it's dumb to condemn technology that will become standard. From a marketing position it just solidifies you as the cheap system.
"I don't see anything elitist about saying"
Customers expect games to graphically improve over time and you just told them you aren't interested in improving the graphical content of games. What does that accomplish for Nintendo? How does it sell the Switch? It doesn't and becomes fodder for websites like this. A PR answer about Switch features or nothing to announce is better because nobody can twist that into your company being cheap or inferior compared to competitors.
"And that's my exact point, why would you invest in something people are purposefully turning off because it decreases their enjoyment of your product?" Framerate improvements don't decrease the enjoyment of a product. And it gives the consumer the chance to pick what they enjoy more. It's simply options and in no way decreases enjoyment of a product. Again, if the Xbox One is terrible tech for gaming you might as well not own any console because the Switch has many compromises. The Xbox One X still has some. That's reality of technology. Just like the N64 was a great step towards 3D gaming, but terribly compromised because of the tech of the time. It doesn't mean the N64 was a terrible console though.
I'm sure some people would line up for a 4K Switch the way some people lined up for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. That wasn't my point though. It's stupid to say that Nintendo isn't looking into these things because there isn't enough market penetration. Because A, that's exactly what Nintendo does as an innovative company. And B, we all know that 4K is quickly becoming the standard and some Nintendo console will have 4K support. It's also likely VR won't go away and some Nintendo console will have VR.
Just say the PR thing, "We are really excited about the Switch and all the features it brings to the market." No elitist we are smarter than everyone wasting their time on 4K and VR BS. Nobody is saying Nintendo needs to release a 4K Switch tomorrow, but when they say things like this I get the feeling they still don't understand the market at all.
Also, if you like frame rates you should love the Xbox One X. Many games are giving you the option of solid frame rate 1080p rather than 4K.
It may not be adopted by the majority of people in the US, but what about the majority of gamers? It seems to me that someone willing to spend $300+ on a console is much more likely to have upgraded their TV already. I mean if the Switch sells 100 million that's like a global attach rate of 1%. So they shouldn't have bothered with it right?
It's the wrong question though. The question should be can Nintendo make a product that would make money in that market. Lots of companies do well in Niche markets.
The key is to get people attached to the nintendo universe by getting a my nintendo account and getting information for targeted marketing. They could also include accessories from Nintendo games like a link outfit for your dog, a kirby ball for your sog to chase, ect. I mean they made mitomo which didn't connect to any console game and was a complete waste of time so this idea is certainly better than that.
Don't see the downside really. I think it's normal to take a step back and look at how I'm gaming and if it's healthy for me. And if someone feels they are gaming too much and need help it's good to have additional support avenues for them to get help. I just don't see the downside. Normal healthy people aren't going to freak out about the potential of some video gamers have the "addiction" label applied.
Mario Odyssey and Zelda BotW were both two of the best games of the generation. Hopefully Metroid 4 and something else will be great to carry this momentum through 2018. Splat and Arms are fine games, but they aren't must play Switch sales driving games like Mario/Zelda.
"They are always about future sales, and never about past sales.
Economically, rewards, sales, coupons, and the like are all the same from the producer's point of view."
Let's take a step back here. Yes, good rewards should lead to future sales and should lead to more revenue. A good rewards program should get people to say dang, I'm only 10 coins away from a really cool reward what can I buy to get there? If the big joke is that everyone has all their coins expiring then it's not changing consumer behavior towards purchasing more items and it is not a good rewards program.
Are you familiar with the concept of price skimming? Price skimming is the idea that a product such as a game starts at $60 and sells to all the people willing to buy at $60. Then the price lowers to say $50. And the game sells to all willing to pay $50 and then drops etc. Sales increase revenue.
I misread disastrous financial decision as disastrous financial situation. But I still think you're wrong. Good sales programs increase sales. Good rewards programs reward the most loyal. If your intent is to add new consumers you do that by lowering the cost of entry (price of a switch), sales of games when the games slow down, and bundling items with the purchase. These items mostly exclude existing customers because they have the systems/accessories and big games.
A rewards program that doesn't encourage participation (only being good to new users) is a rewards program setup to fail. Because in 6 months to a year all those new users will be existing users and won't be able to find anything new in the program for them. And quite frankly I'd like an example of a rewards program that only encourages new users to use it. PS Plus and Xbox LIve have tons of goodies for existing users.
Additionally, I think you are under the false assumption that a new user is more valuable than an existing user. For some industries that may be true. But in video games if you are willing to buy systems and games day 1 with no discount you are likely to spend a lot more with your continued loyalty than someone who needs sales and discounts before they'll purchase. I mean look at a user like JasonH for example. The guy buys everything video games. He has a PS4, Xbox One, and a Switch. He has to have over 50 Switch games by now. So you are competing for his future dollars and he spends a lot more on video games than 99.9% of the other people that own a Switch. Sure new users are important for growth, but you need to keep your core happy with your product and choosing you over the competition.
I think you missed that with the Switch Nintendo is printing money again. Last quarterly statement says they are projecting 120 billion yen in operating profit which if I'm doing my math correctly is more than a billion USD in profit this year. So they certainly aren't in dire straights as you suggested.
And a good rewards program does both incentivize new customers and reward existing customers to inspire loyalty to them so you spend your future dollars here. Anyways most of their discounts are a measly 20%. If that added Switch games with that discount for gold coins they'd simply be matching the market (amazon/best buy discount). Not too much to ask I think since they'd profit more on selling you a digital game at 20% instead of best buy selling you the same game for 20% and them taking their cut.
I've dabbled in nintendos smartphone games and they're decent. Thus far the only smartphone game that's had staying power with me is plants vs. Zombies 2. It's free to play but i don't actually spend any money on it.
I'm so glad that Nintendo decided to not allow us to move or backup saves because that could be an opening for hackers. Nintendo is always ahead of them hackers.
Most would say it qualifies as fair use. Those terms are really meant to prevent someone from loading their entire movie collection to youtube, not to prevent a video game playthrough. Almost nobody who does playthroughs gets written authorizations from the game producer.
All new game services have the opportunity for the games on those services to do well. Overtime as the system gets more games (as you're starting to see) it gets harder and harder for games to stand out. So while I could see the argument for no VC in the first 18 months of the systems life to help early supporters, after that it doesn't seem as effective. At some point it there will be a critical mass on the eshop and just being on there won't guarantee sales. At that point there should also be a large diverse market of gamers for the system so having a program like VC is important to reach to those gamers that don't necessarily like to focus on modern games, but would love a way to play older games on the go.
The Switch will be hacked. Using a catridge slot ensures that there will be a flash cart at some point. This gimping the O/S so it doesn't get hacked is nonsense. I mean I get wanting it fast and the focus to be on gaming. But I don't understand why official apps for some of the more popular things like Netflix aren't there yet.
I guess it's all about kevtris. Hes the software genius. If he wants to release it he will. I don't think analogue really has a say in it. He's long talked of his project the zimba 3000 which is what this seems to fulfill. I guess I'd be surprised if he'd hold back features from essentially his dream product. But if the nes is the only core that doesnt make it over, I'll still be as happy as a clam.
Politics in a discussion about retro gaming serve no purpose. And I've already answered your question many times about the underlying logic being false. Most retro gamers are also modern gamers. There is no call for them to go back to how things were 25 years ago. They just like games and want to have fun. Sometimes that means playing games from a different era. Sometimes that means playing games from todays era. Also, I meantioned my buddies kids who are 9/11 who have a switch/xbox one and now a super Nintendo classic that they love. They have no nastolgia to fall back onto. It's all new games to them. Literally no one here and no retro gamer I know made the argument I play retro games because I wish it was like 1990 again. You seem to ignore the points in this thread so you can keep falling back on your flawed analogy. I mean if you have no desire to play retro games that's fine. But let's not pretend there aren't good reasons to play some of those games today that don't deal with hating the way life is today.
No I didn't, why would I 'hide' an insult behind a simple and logical argument?
Why do you suspect everything to be an insult, can't it just be an argument without any hidden agendas?
Because it's not very logical. You are comparing a preference such as what ice cream flavor someone likes to an ideology. Politics in general are of limits because they are very provocative and in general illicit strong reactions which you are now acting surprised off. You really couldn't think of one other comparison that could be better?
My grandparents are older and long for the days when they had better health, but I wouldn't go around comparing them to brexit. Your argument has always been fundamentally flawed because many retro gamers are also modern gamers. It's not an either or. Also, unless you played all 1,000 NES games, 1,000 Super gamers, 1,000 genesis games, etc, there is a great deal of new things that can be found there.
Sure they'd make more if they sold both. If I'm reading correctly though, the nes and super both use the Altera Cyclone V chip. So I wonder if it's possible to get super games on the NES. Maybe the inputs would make it unfeasible.
I think Kevtris would release the NES core assuming he releases all the others. I think this analogue super is priced to be a mass market product whereas the analogue nes is priced to be niche. So I think they will go out in trying to push the super sales. I mean I'm not privy to inside info, but with the aluminum case, included 8bitdo controller, all the outputs, I'm not sure they'd really make more on an nes sale anyway.
You claimed victimization by retro gamers habits in response #60 so it would seem you do care how retro gamers spend their money.
"But i find this retro trend highly annoying because it affects me as a player. Tons of indie and even AAA games are nowadays trying to replicate the retro feeling with terrible graphics and outdated mechanics and these games do sell pretty well, better than new games even."
I guess I don't know why you have to be so insultive which is where I grab your attitude of superiority. I mean your post #43 is basically a bunch of insults to support your point. Comparing retro gaming to "backwards", "ignoring progress", you could enjoy it if you were 10. Tell me those aren't insultive and you love Trump, Brexit and see no reason for progress. Learn how to make a point without relying on insults.
I'll just make an honest comparison then.
When did you decide your beliefs were superior to others and feel the need to group people you admittedly don't understand into groups than you can then discriminate against. It's very reminiscent of Naziism. Why do you hate people you don't know? Do you have a skinhead? It seems based on your arguments you have alot more in common with extremist groups than those you are trying to pigeonhole into beliefs they don't have.
Hate groups are built on selfishness and superiority complexes which you are exhibiting with your argument. They are not built on everything is better in the past nor is that the argument of people that play those games. It's a strawman argument. In fact it's a poor assumption to make that if nobody played retro games that more modern games would be available.
If you don't understand something and want to know more about it, then ask a question genuinely. Saying I don't understand something then comparing that to an extremist view is being intentionally ignorant and simply a trolling post looking for a fight.
To answer the question which I'm not sure you're asking. Games are supposed to be fun. I try all kinds of games and genres because I want to have fun. When a game was made does not determine if it was fun or not. Sure some old games are rough to go back to, but many games released today are stinkers too. You're viewpoint also ignores people like my friend at work that bought a SNES classic when he never owned one just because he wanted to see what some of the best SNES games were like. He loves it. It's full of great games. His kids (9,11) also love it.
Your reality is you are trying to make a statement with a very weak comparison. Do you take pictures? That is a form of remembering the past. Wanting to remember the past isn't a bad thing. Making the jump from say someone enjoying the past to wanting to relive the past is a big jump for which you've provided no evidence other than your ignorance.
It was obvious before what your opinion was. If you want to rag on things other people enjoy because you don't that's your prerogative. Let's keep politics out of this though. Retro games = support for Trump is illogical and is likely to derail this thread.
To each his own. Retro gaming isn't for everyone, but you'd easily spend more than this trying to get the same picture out of an original SNES. For retro gamers who have dealt with lag in the past this is an amazing solution. It's another huge bonus that Kevtris is involved and has already demonstrated that he will likely release the cores for the 8 bit and 16 bit machines so this will likely turn into a way to play over a dozen systems in glorious lag free 1080p.
Kevtris released a bunch of 8 bit cores for the anaolgue nt mini. I think there is a reasonable expectation that he'll release pce and genesis cores for this.

@JimmySpades
Re: Nintendo of America Adds Nindie Game Rewards 'Volume 2' to My Nintendo
@JimmySpades
Re: Nintendo of America Adds Nindie Game Rewards 'Volume 2' to My Nintendo
@JimmySpades
Re: Soapbox: It Took Nintendo To Turn Me Into A Smartphone Gamer
I've dabbled in nintendos smartphone games and they're decent. Thus far the only smartphone game that's had staying power with me is plants vs. Zombies 2. It's free to play but i don't actually spend any money on it.
Re: Naughty Hackers Have Homebrew Running On Switch Now
I'm so glad that Nintendo decided to not allow us to move or backup saves because that could be an opening for hackers. Nintendo is always ahead of them hackers.
Re: YouTuber Gets Banned From Site For Streaming Super Mario Odyssey
@BLP_Software
Most would say it qualifies as fair use. Those terms are really meant to prevent someone from loading their entire movie collection to youtube, not to prevent a video game playthrough. Almost nobody who does playthroughs gets written authorizations from the game producer.
Re: Nintendo Switch v4.0.0 Update Brought Surprise GameCube Controller Adapter Support
Good news. Hopefully they still release analogue joycons for vc on the go goodness.
Re: Talking Point: The Nintendo Switch is Modernising, But Has a Long Way to Go
@PanurgeJr
Re: Talking Point: The Nintendo Switch is Modernising, But Has a Long Way to Go
The Switch will be hacked.
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@roadrunner343
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@roadrunner343
Sure they'd make more if they sold both. If I'm reading correctly though, the nes and super both use the Altera Cyclone V chip. So I wonder if it's possible to get super games on the NES. Maybe the inputs would make it unfeasible.
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
So when you compared it to Trump/Brexit, you didn't mean that to be insulting? You do love Trump/Brexit?
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@roadrunner343
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
It was obvious before what your opinion was. If you want to rag on things other people enjoy because you don't that's your prerogative. Let's keep politics out of this though. Retro games = support for Trump is illogical and is likely to derail this thread.
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@shani
Re: The Analogue Super Nt Is The Ultimate SNES Clone, And You Can Pre-Order Now
@NinChocolate
Kevtris released a bunch of 8 bit cores for the anaolgue nt mini. I think there is a reasonable expectation that he'll release pce and genesis cores for this.

Re: Digital Foundry Does a Deep Dive on the Super NES Classic / SNES Mini Emulation
@liveswired
If you use rgb with xrgb or ossc you can get that quality out of an original Super Nintendo.
Re: Digital Foundry Does a Deep Dive on the Super NES Classic / SNES Mini Emulation
@MsgBoardGamer
Nice to see you still won't let that go.
Re: Digital Foundry Does a Deep Dive on the Super NES Classic / SNES Mini Emulation
@BlueOcean
The Nes classic was quite a bit more powerful than the Wii according to teardowns. The Wii did N64 emulation pretty well.
