Re: Random: Turns Out Nintendo Might Be Right, You Can Have Too Much Super Mario Bros.

cleveland124

If we have too many versions of Mario Bros, then why release it at all? There obviously is demand for the product or it wouldn't be sold out everywhere. So the question doesn't make sense as people obviously want more Mario and appreciate the new way to play.

Nintendo is just playing the artificial scarcity game to drum up a bunch of sales in before their annual financials come out. They delayed most of their games and need people to buy the Mario collection and the Mario game and watch so their investors will still be impressed even with a relatively dry 4th quarter release schedule.

Re: Watch Out, Europe - Importing Consoles From The U.S. Just Got A Lot More Expensive

cleveland124

I don't really understand this. Anologue builds their machines in China which seems like it shouldn't have extra vat tax for tax applied directly to American goods. Unless you are saying they ship all the consoles to the US then send them to other countries. I know Analogue is small, but that seems insanely inefficient.

Also, don't all imports get hit with 15% vat tax normally? The extra 10% would stink but it doesn't seem as egregious as this article is making it out to be.

Re: Hardware Classics: The Super Famicom Is 30 Today

cleveland124

@Munchlax

Snes and Gba were the peak of 2d gaming. Modern retro games like Shovel Knight are great but it doesn't really do anything better. 3d games have come along way but not 2d games. If you are someone who likes 2d games then many of them are still very playable today.

Re: Video: Does Cloud Gaming Work On The Nintendo Switch?

cleveland124

@westman98

Two big problems with the 3ds were that it was a huge price increase. The DS was obtainable for $100 at the end of its life and the 3ds was $250. The other big issue is very few people cared about its biggest feature 3d. And quite honestly the 3d was very disorienting until the new 3ds came along.

To me I just don't care what the future holds. I have games I enjoy and my backlog is long so I don't need a subscription service if that's the future.

@Donkey-Kong-Fan

You clearly don't understand what I was saying as I said one use case was proof of nothing.

Are you saying Nintendolife is lying? Because it would seem so as I just gave a link to their article and I didn't give an opinion. How about you take it back a step instead of calling anybody who experiences issues or has a different opinion a liar. It makes me think you don't know how to form an argument and just focus on trying to bully people.

A sample size of 1 is the ultimate proof. Don't let people tell you differently.

Here is Nintendolifes guide to fixing pro controller drift if yours ever starts drifting. But I'm sure you'll never have that issue and they created that guide for the sole purpose of upsetting you.

Re: Switch Can Break The Traditional Hardware Cycle And Become Nintendo's iPhone, Says Analyst

cleveland124

An intruiging idea. But I think it's too consumer friendly for Nintendo. Consumers could decide when to upgrade without losing access to their games. Ipad sales peaked in 2014 and have been steadily declining. I'm a graphics guy and I'd be tempted to skip gens if it didnt mean losing access to Nintendo games in the interim. Nintendo makes the most $ when they can sell 20 million consoles a year. I don't think they'll jeopardize their hardware sales like that.

Re: Feature: No More Robots Boss On How Switch eShop Is Pushing Publishers To Game The System

cleveland124

I'm not naive enough to think that good games equal sales. We live in an era where there are so many good games that it's hard to stand out. But the developer is responsible for marketing to maximize sales. It's not Nintendo's job to sell the game for you. If you think the game is good then spend money to get it out there so people know about it. I pretty much only buy indie games if they are on a huge sale or if its a game like Hades that has multiple glowing reviews and got a perfect score here. I just dont have enough time to play all the good games out there.

Re: Nintendo Reinstates Pikmin 3 On The Wii U eShop Ahead Of The Switch Release

cleveland124

Too bad they didn't put the DLC back on. That's what I need to finish the game. I never understood why they pulled in the first place. The Wii U failed hard. If people that payed $350 for that system (only for Nintendo to send it to an early death) want that version over the Switch version they should have that choice. Those few people can't really affect the total sales of the switch version.

Re: Nintendo Announces Super Mario Remasters And Much More In Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct

cleveland124

@JasmineDragon

To be fair on Wii U, Mario 64 was $8, Galaxy was $20. So essentially it's $32 for Sunshine. Which seems high.

Mario 3D World was $20 on Wii U. So it's $40 for a download expansion.

Compared to other collections, it seems like $40 would have been a more fair price for each game. I'm the guy who has like a dozen versions of the original Mario because I rebuy it everytime it's packaged. But I just can't get behind this pricing.

Re: Nintendo Announces Super Mario Remasters And Much More In Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct

cleveland124

I guess I just must be the only person who has old systems available to me that I actually play. I just beat Sunshine, 3D world, Galaxy in the last year. My kids are getting older and I wanted to play some of the games with them. I haven't beaten Mario 64 in a while but I have so many ports of that and I actually prefer the DS version the best because of the extra stars. Even as a collector it's hard for me to get that excited about this.

Re: Nintendo Announces Super Mario Remasters And Much More In Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct

cleveland124

@Giygas_95
Sunshine is definitely the weakest. I forced myself to get all the challenge shines. Couldn't force myself to do the coin collectathons to get all the shines. This seems like a direct port. But if they actually reworked the camera it could do wonders for that game. Too often there would be precise platforming and the camera would suddenly shift obscuring my vision and basically leaving me to do the hardest part of the challenge blind.

Re: Image & Form's New Game Is "Permanently Exclusive" To Xbox And Windows

cleveland124

I'm surprised at how many people are complaining about this article on a Nintendo site. This wasn't clickbait. The article was very clear on what you were going to read. If you weren't interested in reading about something that wasn't going to appear on the Switch it took less than a second to scan to the next article. But you took the time to not only click on the article but to comment.

Re: Nintendo Is "A Jewel" In The Industry And Has The Best First-Party Pedigree, Says Xbox Boss

cleveland124

@Anti-Matter

That's hard to read and understand. It appears you are trying to rephrase this into a Nintendo=Japanese Culture vs. Microsoft =American culture. That argument just isn't worth my time. Microsoft is a good developer but they are very limited with their development capability and haven't been in the game as long as Nintendo. So what they have or haven't done isn't going to necessarily represent American Culture. Microsoft is also focused on a wider gamut of games for everyone while Nintendo focuses on a more narrow games for families.

Just to go back to your original question, "I was wondering if Western peoples able to create their cute games like Animal Crossing."

Yes. The company Disney exists. They specialize in cute and often do it much better than Nintendo. So many different worlds and franchises they've created. It's the American version of Nintendo. The difference is their focal point has been on movies and theme parks while Nintendo's have been in video games. Not to say the two haven't overlapped. There have been many games based on the Disney franchises and Nintendo is going into legos and working on getting into theme parks. It's just ignorant to think that if Microsoft hasn't done it than Americans can't do it.

Re: Nintendo Is "A Jewel" In The Industry And Has The Best First-Party Pedigree, Says Xbox Boss

cleveland124

@Anti-Matter

You are overthinking it. Nintendo and Playstation teams are both Japanese developers. They are the antithesis of each other. At different points either of them has controlled the Japanese market. The Nintendo difference is due to a few of the leaders they've had. Iwata/Miyamoto being the two biggest influences. With Iwata gone and Miyamoto in his later stages we could see a very different Nintendo in 5-10 years.

It's also pretty ignorant to think that Western cultures never invent cute things. So why don't we knock off the ridiculous stereotypes, eh?

Re: Hori Reveals Three New Colours For Its Split Pad Pro Switch Controller

cleveland124

@NullPointerExcep

"Anyway, I wonder if the bigger analog sticks actually compensate for the lack of gyro 🤔 that's the biggest bummer for me, it won't totally replace the joy-cons, as besides no gyro, some games that use motion like Mario Odyssey (cap tricks) and Zelda (tilt puzzles) would be slightly impacted"

Ironically, I was trying to play handheld odyssey with the original joycons. Because the ergonomics are so poor I wasn't able to pull off some of the more difficult maneuvers. I ended up going back to docked with a pro controller to beat those moons. Extremely frustrating to me and joycons in difficult games in handheld mode are a no go for me. I can see instances where the split pads wouldn't work great but it would still be that or docked with pro controller to me.

Re: Hori Reveals Three New Colours For Its Split Pad Pro Switch Controller

cleveland124

@Heavyarms55

Most the time I agree. First party controllers are generally way better. But the joycons suck all around. They aren't comfortable, don't have a dpad, and are an ergonomic nightmare. I wouldn't play my switch in handheld mode nearly as much if I had to use joycons. Side benefit the dpad registers correctly unlike the pro controller.

@Averagewriter

Cost very obviously. I bought my pair of split grips for $32, which is less than half the cost of a pair of joycons. I probably wouldn't have taken the chance on them if they had gyro/full wireless/rumble and were $80.

Re: Analogue Is Retiring Its Amazing Nt Mini After One Final Production Run

cleveland124

@Gamesurfer

If you are going to play a SNES on a modern TV you'll need the $150 OSSC. It converts the SNES signal into a digital signal so it doesn't have the lag that you'll have if you attach a SNES via composite (assuming your flat panel even has composite). If you have a CRT you are good. But hooking old systems to new TVs is expensive if you want it to play well.

@VmprHntrD

I'd say $225 for the aluminum, $25 for the wireless controller, and $50 for the analog scaler that the other systems don't have. But yes, I think the reality is that it is highly likely that Analogue produces an FGPA NES that is plastic, w/o a controller, and w/o analog out for $200 within the next few years. Just seems like easy money to do it. The cores were initially a big sell, but between the mega sg and pocket most of the cores are already available.

Re: Nintendo Has Removed Pikmin 3 From The Wii U eShop Ahead Of The Switch Release

cleveland124

I don't know how I missed the DLC. I'm normally all over that stuff. $6 for 12 levels seems like a good deal. Oh well. If I do purchase the Switch version I'll make sure to purchase a used copy so Nintendo doesn't give any more. They made a billion dollars this quarter and they can't toss us guys who supported them through a failed console a bone? Maybe I'll just start making all my Nintendo software purchases used.

Re: Analogue Pocket Pre-Orders Have Sold Out, But More Are On The Way

cleveland124

Well looks like I made a rookie mistake. I was thinking 8 PST was 12 EST. I actually did log in 9 minutes after the sale started and had it in my cart but it went OOS while picking shipping. So it took 9 minutes to sell out. Their tweet just went up 15 minutes after the clock. Hopefully I'll get one eventually. I kind of wish they didn't announce when they were going to go live because my guess is that a bunch of scalpers picked up orders. Would be easier to miss out if I knew a bunch of people that would enjoy the device had gotten in there orders.

Re: Analogue Pocket Delayed Until Next Year, But There's Some Good News, Too

cleveland124

@RupeeClock

I think it's great value. If you were to buy a GBA with AGS 101 screen you are looking at paying $120. Add an Everdrive X5 and that's another $110. Assuming the highly likely jailbreak happens you get both of those in this device. And that's just one system.

A Game Gear with a McWill screen costs about $270. Then add in a GG Everdrive for $80.

A Lynx Everdrive with McWill with cost about $330. Add a flashcart for $70.

A backlit Neo Geo runs around $230.

If you are interested in any system with mods or flashcarts this system will be better value. It's also right around where the competition is. The RetroUSB AVS is an FPGA NES which will cost less than an NES and RGB mod and you'll still need an OSSC or Frameister to output great picture and it's $200 and doesn't have a screen and has a smaller FPGA chip.

Value is subjective, but I think the value here is a slam dunk and will be purchasing immediately. I actually have many ways to play most of the systems and have already heavily invested in modded systems but I still want to grab this.

Re: Analogue Pocket Delayed Until Next Year, But There's Some Good News, Too

cleveland124

@RupeeClock

This will have two fpga cores with one open for development. That said I'm not sure that it's powerful enough for Snes/Gen and I'm not sure how much that feature will be used by the community (IE if other cores will come). Based on previous launches this will sell out fairly quickly. They'll have additional runs of it though so it's likely you'll be able to pick one up sometime.

Re: Analogue Pocket Delayed Until Next Year, But There's Some Good News, Too

cleveland124

@RupeeClock

Kevtris builds those jailbreak firmwares. Yeah it seems his agreement with Analogue is to post it in a non-official capacity but it's as good as it gets and they do bug fixes on it. The one issue that analogue has is their roll out of products. They will likely not have cartridge adapters day 1 so jailbreaking is likely going to be the only way to play non gba/gc/gb games initially.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

cleveland124

This is why I long have wished for Nintendo to increase their development capability. You shouldn't have droughts when things are selling like hot cakes. It's been an okay year for third parties but most of the games are really late coming to the Switch. I've used this year mainly to catch up on backlog and to pick up deals on third party Switch games.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Prepared To Spend $70 On The Latest Games?

cleveland124

@Heavyarms55

Almost all the cost is fixed and in the case of digital, all the cost is fixed. But the market continues to grow allowing for a lower cost/case. For instance mario kart double dash sold 7 million copies at $50 each. So it brought in $350 million in revenue. Mario kart 8 deluxe sold 24 million at $60 bringing in $1.4 billion in revenue. Do you think mario kart deluxe cost $1.1 billion more to develop than double dash? If not then this isn't about cost at all but driving more profits to shareholders.
