Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Will Require a 3GB Install on Wii U

ccanfield1

@Slim1999 That's not what my post was meant to imply. What I was saying is based on the information I have, I am happy playing Zelda on my Wii U and waiting to purchase Switch until a new exclusive game, like Mario Odyssey, comes out to purchase the system.
Now if after the games come out on March 3rd, I find out there are more significant benefits to the Switch version of the game versus the Wii U version than we know of now, I might reconsider. If it is just the resolution difference between the two, that isn't enough reason for me to buy an entire new system now. Since I will really only be playing this at home, the portability factor for this game doesn't really matter to me either.
I'm not letting other people make decisions for me. I just like to make informed decisions.

Re: Feature: Xenoblade Chronicles X - One Year Later

ccanfield1

I loved Xenoblade Chronicles X. While it had certainly had some flaws, the world was gorgeous, each different areas environments were distinct and the creatures were all so unique. Sometimes I would just stop to stare at beautiful vista and watch the huge alien dinosaurs walk by. Mira was definitely the star of the game. I do feel that releasing the game so late last year hurt it's sales. I almost think waiting to release in the spring might have helped it get some more attention. Ultimately, the end of the WiiU was looking pretty obvious by the time this game came out, so I am glad to hear that this will likely find a second life on the Switch. I loved the world and was so happy when I finally earned my mech. I need to get back to Mira and finish the story. I agree with others that the music was annoyingly repetitive music. Hopefully, they can fix some of the flaws for the Switch version.

Re: Poll: The Wii U is Four Years Old, But What Is Its Legacy?

ccanfield1

@Dr_Corndog Tha's funny because that is exactly how I felt. In my opinion, the game library is both the strength and weakness of the WiiU. There is some great software on the system but ultimately there wasn't enough of it to sell systems. Plus a game like Mario Maker that finally showed the value of the gamepad came too late.

Re: Talking Point: What Approach Should Nintendo Take With Its NX Reveal?

ccanfield1

Like others have said, really I just want Nintendo to finally announce the system so that we can stop guessing as to what it is!

I didn't vote because I think Nintendo should us all the available means of clearly informing consumers what this next console is. They should do a press conference to announce the hardware, keep that tight to an hour, immediately follow it with an E3 Treehouse style stream to highlight the games they are launching with and show the console in action. Then in the following months have game specific Nintendo Directs each month that goes into detail for each major exclusive title.

Re: Reaction: The NX Release in March 2017 and How It Changes the Game

ccanfield1

I think this might have something to do with AMD also making parts for 2 other consoles being released in 2016, according to their recent press release. I think Nintendo might have got a better price for their NX parts from AMD by delaying until 2017. Plus it gives them time to make sure they have the software ready for the NX release too.

Re: Editorial: Miitomo is Surprisingly Strange and Compelling

ccanfield1

The only reason I am using Miitomo is because of it's connection to the new My Nintendo rewards. I lost interest in the app pretty quickly but the Miitomo coins can be used for discounts on downloadable games or to get the Zelda Picross game for 3DS. I can go on once a day for a few minutes and earn those coins.

Re: Editorial: Xenoblade Chronicles X Has Tiny Text - Time for an Update?

ccanfield1

While the size of the text is an annoyance, I think the music is more bothersome to me. It is so repetitive and annoying. As much time as I spend running around in this beautiful world, I only wish the music was as good. Along with an option to increase the text size, they should also allow you to turn down the volume on the music.

Re: Poll: Are You Optimistic About Nintendo's 2016?

ccanfield1

Everything hinges on E3 and the NX announcement. While there are games that I'm excited for coming to WiiU this year, the fact is Nintendo's future depends on the NX and the strength of it's smartphone offerings. I for one am rooting for the big N.

Re: Review: Guitar Hero Live (Wii U)

ccanfield1

With the limited number of games being released for Wii U this holiday, I'm really surprised Nintendo didn't market this more. Although, I'm guessing some of that has to do with agreements with Sony and/or Microsoft. I didn't even see it on Nintendo's website in the 'Coming Soon' section. It's finally on there now under Wii U games but you have to search for it. Just seems like Nintendo could do more themselves to help advertise some of these releases.

Re: Editorial: It's Far Too Soon to Go Download-Only, and Physical Retail Still Matters

ccanfield1

I buy both physical and digital. I weight the pros and cons of each before deciding.
The cost is the main deciding factor for me, I have Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked ($30 for 2 years) and save %20 on any new game ($12 off a $60 game). So based off that fact alone, a digital new release has to have some sort of discount.
Next, is how confident I am that the game will be good enough that I won't want to resell it. If I'm uncertain, then I will probably get a physical copy so if need be, I can trade it in towards another game.
Lastly, are the extras that come with a physical release. I only care about certain ones, like steelbook cases but I could care less about statues. So it isn't always that important to me. I take it on a game by game basis. Like the article mentioned, Witcher 3 had a great release and I got a steelbook case for preordering.
Lastly, my big concern with digital purchases is the problem with licensing issues. If you don't keep a game downloaded on your hard drive and delete it to make space for a new game, with the expectation you can download it again in the future, that may not be the case. There have been several games that get removed from the digital store because of licensing issues. Many come back after the issues are resolved but some never do. With a physical copy, I will always have it and while I may lose some of the multiplayer function if servers are shut down, I should still be able to play the base game forever.
So for me there are pros and cons to both.
So I agree with the article that both need to make changes. Reduce console digital download prices to fall in line with PC game pricing and quicker discounts. Also, improving physical game releases with better manuals and including a map, like Witcher 3 did, would help to keep physical sales healthy.

Re: Poll: The Tricky Issue of Retail Games as Download-Only Releases

ccanfield1

My issue with digital download titles is the price they charge is usually too high (the saving of not making a physical game doesn't come back to the consumer most of the time and consoles are slow to put digital items on sale, compared to PC). Also, with licensing issues, if you delete a game from your hard drive because you need to the space, expecting to be able to redownload it later, that is not always the case. Most of all, since there is no way to sell a digital game I purchase, the resale value for it is essentially zero. Therefore, for those reasons, I prefer physical. The only exception is if a game is so good, I know I will never sell it. Otherwise, I only buy retail games when they have a significant sales price.

Re: Video: This Laparoscopic Wii U Controller is Teaching Medical Students to Perform Keyhole Surgery

ccanfield1

When I read about this game after it came out, I was really intrigued. I looked at their website and was interested in buying the special controller. Then I saw how much it cost

Since I couldn't afford the 250 Euro, getting to see it in action in this video, at least I can get an idea of what it is like to play the game with it.

Did you guys have to buy the controller or did Grendel Games send you one for the review ?

Re: The Club Nintendo Goodbye Coin Has, Well, Said Goodbye

ccanfield1

Being in the US and our Club Nintendo closing down quite a while ago, there was no chance for us to get this. I almost wish that they would have given this out to long time Club Nintendo members. I have gotten Platinum status every year that they had the program. It would have been cool if they sent these out to people who got Gold or Platinum every year. None of these really cool items, like the lamps, ever came to the US Club Nintendo

Re: Some Western Splatoon Players Would Prefer Not To Compete With Japan

ccanfield1

Plenty of people are better than me but I would never blame it on lag. My only frustration is that none of my friends with a Wii U play Splatoon; so I am always playing with random people. I am only level 10 but I'm usually top 1 or 2 in scoring for my team, even when the rest of the team is made up of level 20 or higher players.

Re: Poll: Is Pokkén Tournament The Wii U Release You've Been Waiting For?

ccanfield1

I hadn't heard of this game until now. As someone who never really understood the whole Pokemon craze but is a fan of Tekken, I would definitely be interested in this game. This might be a Pokemon game I can get excited for and would probably bring in others like me, who never really were interested in Pokemon before. Could be a big success, especially from an eSports standpoint, like Smash Bros and Splatoon.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Acknowledges Nintendo as a 'Beacon' for First-Party Games

ccanfield1

I like the love that all the gaming companies are showing each other. I have a Wii U, PS4 and Xbox 360. Each of them offer something different that I enjoy. After Microsoft's E3 presentation this year I decided I'm going to pick up a Xbox One this fall also. I feel if you are only gaming on one system you are limiting yourself. It's like people that only listen to one type of music, I don't understand. I like many different styles of music; I also like many different types of games. Nintendo is great for pure family fun, PS is great for Uncharted and unique games like Journey, and Xbox does console entertainment and shooters well. I can afford to get all 3 and I just wait for the best deals possible to get the most for my money.

Re: Mighty No. 9 Producer Shares Regret Over Delay, and Clarifies the Reasoning Behind RED Ash Campaign

ccanfield1

My only problem with the 2 RED Ash Kickstarters is the same problem I have with most the campaigns that I like but don't end up supporting, I don't like the backer rewards they are offering. So many times I want to support a project but they do such a poor job of organizing their backer rewards. Either they don't have any rewards I am really interested in or more often they don't have the ones I'm interested at a price I can afford. For example the RED Ash game kickstarter originally began only as a PC game but I am a console gamer, so not interested in PC only. Later they added a stretch goal for PS4 that they didn't end up reaching and there was no way I could see on the Kickstarter page how to support at the price level to get a digital copy of the game for PS4. It still only offered a PC digital copy that I am not interested in. Some times I would be willing to support a Kickstarter to get a tshirt for the game but too often physical items are only included in a bundle that is priced way out of my range. Why can't they just offer a $25-30 option that just includes a shirt, that way I could get something, support above the $5 amount that doesn't really give me anything as a backer and barely helps achieve a funding goal. Plus if you did reach stretch goals that allow you to offer console digital downloads, you could probably get another $30 out of me when that happens.

I don't know if I explained my example well enough, but ultimately I feel that many of these Kickstarters are failing, not because people don't like the actual campaign concept but because the backer rewards aren't thought out well enough to get people to be able to support at many different levels for many different options. The more backer rewards you offer, or variations of ways to get the same rewards you are making anyway just at different price points, the more likely you are to be successful.

Last example to stress my point, I supported the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter. They allowed me the option of a PS4 digital copy instead of PC, so I supported at that level. However, had they offered a t-shirt by itself at $30 that I could have just added on top they would have got more money from me. Since they only included the t-shirt in a bundle that you had to pay $150 for, they only got the me to pay for the digital copy. This is why I think they need to spend more time thinking about the backer rewards and providing as many options as they can at different price points to help potential backers find an item at a price point they just have to have.

Re: Video: Summing Up The Good And Bad Of Devil's Third

ccanfield1

I'm just going to wait until the final game get's released. All this negative press isn't helping a game that I was excited to play because it filled a void in the Wii U game library. It may be justified but I'll take the wait and see approach. I'll read all the reviews of the final product and then determine wether I'll buy it first thing or wait until it goes on sale based upon that. Until the final game is released I think it is premature to say what type of game it is going to be. Especially if there is a multiplayer component to the game.

Re: Devil's Third Will Be Released In North America, Just Not By Nintendo

ccanfield1

I hope that the game isn't really that bad and the only reason Nintendo doesn't want to publish it is because of mature content concerns affecting Nintendo's image.

The speculation has given me enough concern that I'll wait to see what the reviews say before making my purchase. I was really excited for this game but the lack of info at E3 got me worried. I'm glad to here it's coming to North America though. I don't really care how it gets here, just that a more mature action game offering is coming to Wii U consoles.

Re: Happy Independence Day / 4th of July / Random Saturday!

ccanfield1

Thanks for the well wishes. I enjoyed the annual neighborhood parade we have where I live in Tucson, Arizona. I'll probably barbeque this evening with the family. Who doesn't love an excuse to set off some fireworks ? I hope everyone has a good weekend wherever they are. Maybe I'll see you online in Splatoon.

Re: Talking Point: The Mystery of Devil's Third and Its Drift Away from the Spotlight

ccanfield1

I hope nothing is wrong that would prevent it from being released in the US. Next time Nintendo needs to design it's E3 Digital Event around the games it has coming out, instead of coming up with an idea, like muppets, and shaping the event around the idea. All it did was prevent the company from showcasing mature games like Devil's Third and Fatal Frame because their mature content didn't fall in line with a kid friendly theme.

They did finally showcase Fatal Frame on Treehouse Live @E3 but a lot less people probably watched that than the Digital Event. The fact that they never showed Devil's Third does give me pause for concern. If it is coming out in the US this year, why not at least show during Treehouse Live ? Even if they plan to have a Nintendo Direct for it in the near future, it's complete absence from E3 was a mistake, in my opinion.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Tackles Metroid Prime: Federation Force and amiibo Criticism

ccanfield1

Nintendo needs to fix the amiibo supply issues before releasing a whole new batch of amiibo that will mostly be bought and sold by scalpers. I'm a consumer trying to get one of each for myself but gave up during this 4th wave because it was absolutely impossible to do it without paying a ridiculous price on ebay from a reseller.

I will cut Nintendo some slack on Metroid Federation Force. It did look better during the Treehouse Live coverage but they probably should have expected some backlash by using the Prime name.

Re: Editorial: Cheer Up, There Are Some Exciting Games on the Way

ccanfield1

I too think the big picture looks much better after watching a lot of Treehouse Live @E3 coverage. However, I really think it's sad they didn't highlight games like Devil's Third and Fatal Frame during the Digital Event but because of their mature content didn't fit with the muppet theme.

What gets me is that I agree with you, the content is there for the most part, however, where Nintendo really failed to show that is during the event that most people watch, the Digital Event. It goes to show that the press conferences are still important, from a press coverage standpoint, and whether Nintendo decides to go viral with theirs it still is crucial to get it right.

I feel like they had an idea for the Digital Event and forced the content to fit around that, instead of fitting the event around the content. I also think they should have included details about the program replacing Club Nintendo and show us why we should get excited for features that will bring.

Re: Feature: Our Impressions of the Full Nindies@Home Line-Up

ccanfield1

Nindies @Home and the Treehouse Live @E3 coverage are the best things Nintendo did this year by far. I hope Sony and Microsoft do something similar next year for E3 demo downloads because it is a great idea. Plus, including a purchase discount for downloading the demos is brilliant.
