One of the shock announcements from Nintendo's Digital Event yesterday was the news that Skylanders Superchargers on Wii U would be getting two brand-new amiibo figures.
Donkey Kong and Bowser are both joining the cast of Activision's forthcoming toys-to-life sequel, complete with special vehicles to ride. Interestingly, the Wii version - which is called Skylanders Superchargers Racing and is slightly different from the other versions - will also be getting one of these figures in its starter pack - despite the fact that the Wii doesn't support amiibo. Naturally the figure will still work in Skylanders mode, but you won't be able to take advantage of the amiibo connectivity unless you also own a Wii U. Perhaps this is Nintendo's way of getting people to upgrade their consoles?
You can take a look at these figures - as well as artwork and box art - below. Don't forget to check out our game page for screenshots from the title as well.

Well, I already had decided to buy this new Skylanders anyway, so...yeahy!
why is bowser ony in the wii version...
@A01 - All good questions. But more importantly, do we have to buy both sets to get them? I think this DK puts the amiibo to shame, but my kid really wants Bowser. And DK's car is very cool, Bowsers ride not so much.
I hope these get stocked and don't go straight to eBay.
Oh, and you just know if Ninteod made that DK he would have a big ugly white stand holding him up, no amiibo is that active looking. Bowser just looks like fire Bowser, but at least no stick for him either, though I don't think either Bowser amiibo version has a stick.
Oh very important note to everyone - maybe want to point this out in the article @Damo ?
Wii version says Skylanders Superchargers RACING on the box. It's not even the real game of Skylanders (probably the 3DS or app version).They had mentioned that in one of the videos but I think it bears mentioning for those on the fence of which box to get since Wii U will play the disc version - it's NOT the same game.
I want that Donkey Kong now
I'm not really a fan of Skylanders, but if I end up getting this game, Bowser's the only character I'll be using.
DK and Bowser have officially infiltrated Spyro's world... I bet Insomniac's pissed...
Why not LEGO dimensions? Why not Disney Infinity? Wht the most generic and boring toys-to-life franchise outside of amiibo?
Skylanders was fun when it was the only toys-to-life game...Now we have so much more with better characters.
As much as I love DK - he looks silly.
@AyeHaley
Not sure everyone agrees with your take on Skylanders. I never bought in, but the latest installment looks pretty impressive. Also, who says Nintendo didn't try with Disney Infinity or LEGO dimensions first? Plus, Nintendo is licensed with LEGO competitors and I'm guessing LEGO is a licensing nightmare. Not that any of these deals aren't.
So, there's some reasons. Also, notice that it's DK and Bowser. That tells me there could be other deals in place that will role out later. I think Mario and Link would be better fits in Disney Infinity, for instance.
I think I see where they are going with this, too. Skylanders collectors are going to collect some Amiibo. That's opening a door.
@rjejr Good point, this has been added to the news item.
When the game was first revealed it was stated that the Wii would get a slightly different version of the game. We've got some guys over in LA now and will try and find out exactly how.
@rjejr @something17
I think the look of these figures are spot on in that they are silly looking and over the top in Skylanders fashion and they don't look like Amiibo or iconic representations of the characters but a unique take on them as they fit into this different world. Seems to me it's as it should be.
I'm not a fan of those plastic sticks to hold up amiibo but they do disappear to my eye after awhile. Bowsers skylander pose is very inert and boring even compared to the amiibo, but especially to that dynamic take on DK. Love that pose.
I don't have bowser or DK, so if I ever did buy into skylanders this would be a nice way to save money.
@rjejr I agree. DK and Bowser look great! So what's up Ninty? Why with the generic Amiibo poses? Seriously, they really gonna let themselves get outdone on their own IP? Ugh... Ninty, what were you thinking?
@Platypus101 The Nintendo Amiibo are possed to look like their Smash emblem counterparts. Future Amiibo could look very different.
Hopefully Bowser will be sold separately and not for $30-$40 on eBay. I don't know if I want both Wii and Wii U versions of the game unless Racers offers unique and fun gameplay.
@Damo - "slightly different version of the game"
Yeah, I remember that comment, but the big "RACING" on the box makes me think that their idea and my idea of "slightly different" is well, different.
You remember Jak X? The original Jak and Daxter is my favorite game, Jak X not so much.
I'm going to be spending a lot of time watching Skylanderboyandgirl vids to see whats what. They get everything early, I think Activision loves them.
For those who are interested - ok just @aaronsullivan then - DK and Bowser in the game. And Diddy Kong if you look closely.
DK

Bowser

Supposedly Bowser and DK are only playable on Nitnedo consoles, therefore the above footage must be on Wii U. Do not watch any Starfox footage after these or you will cry. Oh, and it ahs online, salt in the wound adnall that.
Skylander Dad is the man. Loads of info on the game here.

@Captain_Gonru who knew this would start up a discussion on eschatology? lol
And actually it has been done before with Link in Soul Calibur 2 for the GameCube. Clearly a better option than heihachi for ps2 or spawn for the Xbox.
That being said, I have no interest in skylanders and I'm intrigued by this too. I guess I'm a marketeer at heart but this seems genius. I hope bowser is sold separately from the pack so I can have this one as a smash bros. partner.
@Captain_Gonru - From what I understand they are only usable in the Nitneod console versions - see my long previous post right above yours 5 minutes earlier Wii U, Wii Racing? and 3DS which I'm guessing will be a 2D platformer like Chibi Robo. jk 3DS will probably be racing like the Wii version. Or maybe compeltley different like iPad? I swear there are so many different version of this game, and they all look better than Starfox.
Oh, saw your 1st post on AC:aF, so no longer a Day 1 I presume? Did you tell your wife, I got the feeling she was into the series.
Every day is Ragnarok, but only the last 1 matters, and I don't know when that is.
If the Wii version is drastically different, I'll be getting both. This seems like an encouraging step up for the franchise, some of water and flight footage looking truly compelling rather than just some nice but shallow gaming on offer. I don't doubt it will still be relatively easy, and primarily still aimed at younger audiences, but this looks by far the most fleshed out experience and I'm looking forward to it. Glad Nintendo are seeking out these customed versions, it's a good way to bridge the gap left by having so few 3rd party exclusives, and they should totally do more of it in the future, because in my opinion, just like that, they have made the Wii u version the must have version.
Amiibo look far better than Skylanders. If Nintendo dropped the quality to get more stock like Skylanders, then Amiibo wouldn't sell as well.
@Platypus101 I am not a fan - Bowser and DK don't dress at all, let alone in those hideous garments and the colours are so drab for the figures that I will have to hold the packaging in my hand to see if I will buy them.
@Damo The 3DS version is also Skylanders SuperChargers Racing, which you can see right here...
http://n-club.dk/nyheder/446380-skylanders-superchargers-fr-nintendo-eksklusivt-indhold
Also, according to the press release starter packs are the only way to get those figures..
Does that mean thses 2 characters will have the same shortages that all the best Amiibo have?
I am not a fan of the vehicles - DK without a mine cart? It feels like these are other characters that merely look similar or are cos playing.
Looks straight out of a happy meal box. Enough with the damn toys already, seriously.....
@KJ85 - Thanks for that. Had a feeling the 3DS and Wii versions would be the same. Just realized the front of the box is even different w/ a checkered finish line on them. So "Skylanders: Karting" it is.
On the bright side the 3DS version is uaslly cheaper, so we can pick that up instead of the Wii, if need be, will have to wait on reviews, or at the very least previews.
@Captain_Gonru - So that's a "no" for her too then I reckon.
Here's a thought, maybe Ntinedo should group test their NDs, b/c I'm not even sure who that was aimed at yesterday. Not potential Wii U owners, thats for sure. Or gamers. Or kids. hmm, I need to think on this one some more.
So will they be sold without the game or only in a pack with the game?
@AyeHaley
Skylanders is still atop of the toy-to-life gaming bandwagon and its action figure sales are #1. That makes it a pretty good choice especially since Activision has been active in keeping the brand alive across all Nintendo platformers.
@Captain_Gonru - You left off the "ever". Kids are going to think you aren't "hip"
These look...average, but without the standardized base these are hardly amiibo and would look really out of place among other amiibo figures. If they're only available as part of that bundle its not even an alternative to existing DK or Bowser amiibo (though these are common anyway), so really, they're just Skylanders that work on the gamepad as I see it. Disappointing.
Why do Wii owners get the Bowser Amiibo?
@Kingrat - "but without the standardized base these are hardly amiibo "
The Yoshi(s?) say hi.
@Captain_Gonru - Hep Cat Gonru the zen master chillin' in Big Sur w/ the Beats.
Want the Bowser now... NIce
These "Amiibo" will be common as dirt like every other starter pack figure or item.
Probably the only Skylanders characters I will ever own. Smart they are including it in the starter pack because otherwise I would just buy the seperate characters. I don't really care about the game but really want the amiibo.
