Yesterday we brought you the shock news that Devil's Third has been canned by Nintendo of America in the U.S. due to concerns about the final quality of the product. We noted that an alternative publisher will have to be found if Devil's Third is ever going to see the light of day in America.
It appears that the rumour is true as respected website Siliconera has put it's investigative journalism hat on and has confirmed that another publisher will indeed by picking up duties for releasing the game in the North America. This would protect NoA's reputation from unleashing a potential Devil's Turd on the American gaming public.
Our bets are on Marvelous USA (aka XSEED) to be picking up publishing duties, what do you our faithful readers think?

Huh there goes my respect for Nintendo of America going down the drain. Screw you big N .
Good news. Let's hope for a release date soon.
I have several questions.
I just hope whoever publishes doesn't just put it out to die...assuming it's still a decent game. Not much can be done if it's had as many problems as what's been speculated...
would it be released FOR nintendo consoles though?
I can understand NoA having standards of quality, but I find it funny that they deem the game acceptable for European/Japanese gamers!
Hm....
Well... at least it's coming. But I guess some people will still complain in one way or another. BTW, this looks similar to the case of The Last Story
@linklore It's coming to Wii U in Europe and Japan. I'm pretty sure Ninty has secured the rights to this game.
There was a rumour over two weeks ago that Gamestop would be releasing this as an exclusive in the US. I assumed this rumour was the rumour that started the rumour from the Unseen 64 rumour , that has now become fact in this article about this rumour.
It's good news this game will be released in NA, but it is kinda disrespectful of them to release it everywhere except in NA
yeah, atleast it's coming (in some form)
still kinda odd of NOA not working on the game (it makes less sense of NoE and NoJ approved the game, if the game that bad)
At least it's still happening...is it just me, or has Nintendo basically been on a roll with handing out disappointment since E3? Seriously. Has any good news been delivered since then?
@MightyKrypto
"It's good news this game will be released in NA, but it is kinda disrespectful of them to release it everywhere except in NA"
Er... what now? Contradiction?
NOA are probably not publishing it because a) it's a badly made terrible game or b) they don't want to be associated with the extreme violence within the game. Have NOA ever published a really violent game before ?
Such indignation from people who apparently haven't considered that the game might be total excrement. It's almost like they can't resist yet another chance to criticize Nintendo.
@NintendoFan64 agreed, at least, NoA has been doing everything wrong since E3.. First, Fatal Frame is only available through the eshop and now this? We can only wonder what might be happening in their HQ...
I just don't understand why NOA is getting hate for this can you really blame them for not wanting to get burned by a potentially bad game.
Language.-Morpheel
@NintendoFan64 I've noticed it, too. And it all started after E3. I honestly don't know what's happening...
It was being developed for PS3 and Xbox 360. Maybe it wasn't a good game back then. Now that it's still not good Nintendo doesn't want their name on it.
@VeeFlamesNL Not at all. Just glad it is being released in NA, but it's strange it's not being done by Nintendo ( who'll release the game everywhere else)
@PanurgeJr...Good point. Let's just wait and see what the reviews for it are.
@Luna_110 @VeeFlamsNL I know! It's like E3 was cursed or something!
@MikeW It wasn't NoA who deemed it acceptable for Europe and Japan. It was NoE and NoJ
Another point, since Nintendo appears to own this game, it would have had to have negotiated the rights for release. It may have been the publisher of last resort in Europe. At least it is coming.
Also, Nintendo has not had good luck with M-rated games. The WiiU had more available at launch than the PS4 — and you see how well that did. Meanwhile, a quality M-rated game like Bayonetta 2 sold 400K in the US and less than 750K worldwide (less than half the original did on each of its two platforms). So maybe NoA knows its market and made sure the game got out.
WTF NOA?! Too many games lining up the release schedule or something? Haven't you learned anything from Operation Rainfall?
@NintendoFan64 Too bad that's the case...but be thankful that Wooly World, Star Fox Zero, and Mario Maker exist, right? If it wasn't for those games, it would've been a whole lot worse!
@Jay1984 Bayonetta 2
"This would protect NoA's reputation from unleashing a potential Devil's Turd"
Hahaha, honesty if the whole rumour was true can't see myself buying it combat games like this are horrible with bad framerates.
@Dark-Luigi I'm mostly excited for Xenoblade Chronicles X.
@Jay1984 Does Bayonetta 1&2 count? Despite the comic nature those got pretty bloody & violent.
@Aromaiden Ah yes, that too!
This makes me wonder just how playable will this game be when it releases. Itagaki and Valhalla Studios cant possibly be considering their first game to be a buggy unplayable mess.
I think, less the quality, and more about the content of the game is why NoA is trying to distance itself from the game. Makes no difference who releases it as long as it gets released and it probably saves Nintendo a few headaches. Also strengthens an existing relationship by throwing some free business and money at a gaming partner
I just want a publisher name before we get the pitchforks out.
@Luna_110 I have a feeling DeNA is somehow involved, I mean for example why would you kill off Mario Kart 8 DLC to add extra people to the smartphone division...
Cue operation rainfall ppl complaining and acting like that did anything when xenoblade was already being brought over and the last story and Pandora's tower got released by third party publishers and Nintendo wasn't going to.
As long as it still getting release in NA, I don't see any reason to hate now. Unless you still sore about E3 and have a personal vendetta against Nintendo.
It's weird that it feels like Americans have a much higher standards and allegedly complains more compared to the rest of the world. It's like what's not good enough for NA is good enough for everyone else, or Americans are too picky, it all depends on what side of the coin you look at.
@dariusq did bayonetta involve cutting human beings in two? Or was it just demonic creatures ?
It's a safe and reasonable bet for Nintendo to make. They probably saw the negative reactions to the game from their last showing and decided it was too risky to release on their own. They are a business after all, not a charity. Regardless, there is another publisher helping to get it released so what's the big freaking deal?
I so badly want the reviews for this to start rolling out. Really want to know what the deal here is.
Kind of makes sense. Xseed is seen as being a niche publisher, and they're usually a bit more immune to the criticism Nintendo would take over this game either being poor or having an image that clashes with what people expect of the Big N.
@ultraraichu We're really good at complaining, and then having those complaints turn into an echo chamber that somehow makes opinion into fact. It's fascinating to watch media over here.
Please be good. Please be good. Please be good. Please be good. I need this to be good.
I am wondering whether Nintendo of America's decisions is in any way related to why they did not work on releasing The Last Story and Pandora's Tower, both also supposedly Nintendo games from external developers, in the region either.
@TwilightAngel Yes, come on Nintendo, release a game that is starting to sound like it's going to average a 6! You haven't played the game. They have. My bet is they know it's bad.
If the game is bad, I hope it doesn't see a release. We'll know for sure in a week when the European reviews start coming out.
@Dark-Luigi Oh yeah. I definitely have some games to look forward to (Not just those 3.). Still...things haven't been going too well lately.
What was that about Unseen64 being unreliable?
And I don't get it; if the game is coming afterall, why complain?
@TwilightAngel You've lost your respect for Nintendo... because they worry about quality?
@MikeW Wrong. NOA found it unacceptable. NOE and the others thought it was OK.
DIFFERENT PEOPLE MAKE THE DECISIONS. It's as if they have different opinions?!?! OH MY GOSH PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS! NO WAY! Even on the Internet this is a thing that is allowed! I just blew your mind!
Game is too violent for Nintendo anyway.
@Jay1984 Well it did involve you killing demons and angels in sexually comedic and gruesome ways.
Still good enough for Europe.
@DarthNocturnal Honestly I never thought they were unreliable, rather that it's always best to wait and hear it from the source itself.
... I have a bad feeling about this. And it's not my imagination.
@Mus1cLov3r People lose respect for this company every other week on this site. Give them a few hours and they'll be in a completely different article complaining about something else that makes them "lose respect"
Well geez that's uhh... Really uhh... Wow. Really makes me worried about how the game will actually be. It looked like a fair bit of fun to me, but if Nintendo won't publish THIS due to a lack of quality, then... Wow. I didn't know Nintendo had standards to begin with lol.
@Koopa-King Honestly I've never noticed it until just recently. And by recently I mean after Nintendo's Digital Event. And I don't blame them.
@Gorlokk Well nobody has said anything about the quality. For all we know this could be for simple business reasons. But assuming is what we do here!
@XCWarrior
I understand that NoE and NoJ approved the game in their respective regions, but that still does not make a lot of sense and sends the wrong message to Nintendo fans that the standards for some gamers are different than others, considering the fact that NoA is not publishing the game here because of apparent QUALITY reasons.
My question is, why does Nintendo feel it can shovel a turd game to one segment of its gaming fanbase, while the other segment is protected from spending their hard earned 50 bucks on a bad game?
@TwilightAngel Sorry for coming off as rude as I did. I really should have been more polite. I've just seen the very same thing said for almost every article posted on the site and I wanted to be vocal about it. Once again I apologize for my rudeness.
Funny they're so concerned about quality of the game yet released Metroid: Other M.
@KingofSaiyans how sexual ? It can't be that bad?
Well there goes my respect for NoA. Completely gone. Anysigns of Nintendo actually listening to consumers have just been flushed down the toilet. Thank you XSeed for being there to pick up what Nintendo has repeatedly failed to do. I will buy the gamer even if it's a turd just to slap Nintendo in the face. They are concerned about quality yet they are releasing crappy mario party games for years. They just rehash it when they could actually make something good and fun with Mario Party and now they will put that poopy thumb print on Animal Crossing. They will release nothing but rubbish for the continuation of Wii U's life cycle (with exception of Zelda). Mario Tennis looks like a fun diversion but it is just a distraction. I am glad Splatoon was a success at least because it will be the final one. It is a sad state of affairs for Nintendo right now.
I'd laugh if atlus picked it up and it became their best selling title for a while like demon souls was.
@Jay1984 BAyonetta 2 had no sex per say however much of the humor was sexual and there is partial nudity because her weapon is her hair and her clothes are her hair. You see where this is going. Either way it was a ridiculously good game, and who cares if there is sex and violence, sure it's not for kiddos but there are plenty of grown ups to love the game. I sure did. I bet Devils Third is not nearly as foul as some of Bayonetta...just bloody probably.
@FJOJR Lol, when will people stop bringing up Other M in a negative sense? Other M wasn't a bad game at all, it just had incredibly questionable plot devices. The actual gameplay was everything I'd expect from a 2.5D Metroid game.
And, I don't know about you, but gameplay makes up AT LEAST 50% of a game. Story is merely an afterthought. Not saying games with great stories aren't incredible, because they are.
I'm just saying people should look beyond the whole "You will do what I command" plot device Adam throws around in Other M.
Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, Nintendo of America have always been risky when it comes to publishing 3rd party exclusives. NoE on the other hand published Xenoblade, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower here in the UK.
Also, remember that Disaster: Day of Crisis that never got released in the US? That wasn't as bad as NoA would have you believe.
@garthvader titillation then, I've been tempted to buy it but didn't get on with the demo
@TwilightAngel Where did anyone imply that? Different people have different ideas of what "quality" is; NoA don't think it's good enough, but NoE and NoJ do—they still worry about quality...
@Koopa-King You weren't rude... at all. Telling someone to screw themself is rude.
@Jay1984 You mean you didn't like the demo or just didn't play it? The game is excellent if you like the God of War series action but with a twist of humor and what I call "female James Bond cockiness". I quite honestly think the combat is much better than all of the God of War games when you get down to the subtleties of it and especially after you unlock all the moves and weapons. It's certainly worth a purchase. The story, scripting, and cut scenes are absolutely amazing. The 1st level blew me away and remains the single most impressive graphical achievement on the Wii U in my opinion. The rest of the game looks amazing as well but that 1st impression was unforgettable for me.
Will people still be angry at Nintendo of America is this game ends up with 5 and 6 out of 10 reviews? People will argue that it should be their right to decide and not NoA's, but it's also NoA's right not to spend money on a rubbish game. You might not want to believe it, but NoA's goal is not to make you happy, it's to make money.
@garthvader Mario Party is a mini-game-based series; each new installment has new mini-games (ya know, what the series revolves around). I fail to see how the series rehashes.
On one hand, Nintendo of America sucks but at least they keep their localizations faithful, as of late.
On the other hand, XSEED is a far better publisher and localization team than NoA themselves, so I'm happy that this happened.
That said, NoA needs an overhaul.
@Peach64 Yeah, because Nintendo's fans pout about everything.
@Peach64 I think a lot of it comes from the perception that the money's already been spent. I certainly wouldn't begrudge Nintendo dodging what they consider a dodgy game, and I think the costs involved in localization and publishing aren't really understood by a lot of people.
@garthvader didn't enjoy the demo really, I know it's hard to appreciate a game fully just by playing a demo, but I never got on with action games going all the way back to double dragon, streets of rage etc, for example the free flow combat in the arkham games is always my least favourite part, still on the fence about buying bayonetta , and going back to devil's turd, think I'm gonna wait on reviews
@Mus1cLov3r Because they put little or no effort into making the new releases something special. Mini-game or not they could do something good, solid and new with every iteration, but they do not. For instance, Mario Galaxy compared to Mario Sunshine, both games in a single series, both entirely different and both of them were good games. What about making Mario Party online and local??? they could have a GREAT game with online matches...I mean they are just stuck in their ways. I have played their games since NES and I will not defend their bad decisions anymore.
Can't say I'm surprised at the apparent low quality of this game, given its history. Now, why hasn't NoA taken the same approach with the last several Mario Party games?
Europeans have it nice ^_^
I have heard its Konami publishing in the U.S.
@garthvader People still buy the series—making Nintendo a boat-load of money; I think your definition of "bad decision" is off... As someone posted above, Nintendo's in it for the money; they're making said money, so...
@Jay1984 Did you play God of War or Devil May Cry games? And yea the demo doesn't give much of a sense for how the game is, just the basic fighting mechanic but barely. You really gotta play the game in it's full form to appreciate it, most people who have played it will agree with that I think. It also doesn't hurt that it packs in the first game so you get 2 games for the price of one. There is a lot more to the game and it has some of the best most responsive control in the genre.
@Peach64 For once, I 100% agree with you.
After knowing what a bad shooter and a action game is like, I don't have high hopes for Devil's Third at this point. Itagaki has fallen short before and his games aren't perfect in the slightest.
@Mus1cLov3r I get your point but if they are preaching quality on this game not being released in the US, I think they are being hypocritical because they have released many games of questionable quality. I am not talking sales because we all know sales does not = quality. Also the localisation cost should be minimal as they just need to bring the European voice over like Xenoblade.
@Mus1cLov3r Thank you. I still felt I was a little rude in my words but I appreciate what you said. Once again thanks.
@Peach64 MAny MArio party games get 6/10 reviews and Kirby's Rainbow was not highly rated either. Captain Toad got luke warm reviews. Yoshi's Whooley World was reviewed as a 6-7 at many places (though I would probably review it higher). If they had Xseed do it in all territories I would get it but they did not do that. It makes no sense since EU to NA there is very little localizing to do. PEople talk about the low quality of this game but I have not heard anyone who has actually played it to give solid evidence that it is not good. It is produced by a talented studio. Regardless of the graphics it maybe be a solid playing action game that looks a little dated. Not one editorial site has shown me a hands-on of this proving all the assumptions that the game is bad. All the assumptions have been based on how old the graphics look. Otherwise the gameplay actually looks fun.
@MikeW This! Why is the quality somehow higher for NA than for EUJP? Why are EUJP expected to buy a low quality game, but NA needs a higher standard? Im getting this game, no doubt about it, even though i always questioned the graphics of the game, making it look like a late wii title. But this is kinda just a slap in the face from Nintendo now.
@garthvader
"they have released many games of questionable quality."
Such as? Don't tell me Fed. Force. You haven't played that game. MP10? Not a game I'd classify as one of 'questionable quality.' amiibo Festival? That game doesn't need to exist, but, then again, we haven't played that game.
So... what games of questionable quality are you talking about?
Another gen almost over and another situation where third party niche publishers need to pick up NoA's slack since they're the worst branch. What a bunch of hicks.
I'm just gonna assume NoA won't be publishing Fatal Frame either.
Also, while the graphics are indeed poor, people need to stop comparing it to 6th gen consoles. The character models are all on the same quality as every other realistic Wii U game and the lighting and shading is consistent with every other realistic Wii U game; as in every character looks like plastic. It's just the environment, vehicles, and textures that are bad. He probably could've pulled off better with more time, money, and effort, but Itagaki's focusing more on gameplay than graphics. That said, the game looks to be on an acceptable level for a Wii U game.
@Peach64 That's besides the point, though. The POINT, is that Nintendo is in no position whatsoever to be cherry picking releases at the moment. They are in the tank as far as reputation and relevancy in the market and have no business sitting up on a high horse. They will be knocked down off that horse (further than they already have been, anyways).
Seriously, what is with you defenders these days? What are you honestly defending with this company in 2015?
@VeeFlamesNL Why would I say Federation Force. I have said numerous times it actually looks fun and I just hate the graphical style. Do you want me to link to all the Nintendo made games that were reviewed lowish... remember I would call anything below a 7 not great and there have been games below a 7.
"Hey, guys. Reggie here. I know you think you like video games, but I'm here to tell you that you actually do not. Nope. Not one bit. So we just pulled the plug on our eShop servers and remotely killed every North American Wii U and 3DS system. You're welcome."
I'm just glad it's coming out, I was really looking forward to it. Hopefully there will be a physical release, my fear was that NOA may stick to a digital only similar to all the fearful rumours surrounding Fatal Frame.
@garthvader It's not just the graphics apparently. According to the leak the game had several issues. Terrible voice acting, repetitive gameplay, bad frame rate, and according to the company it failed at being both a good shooter and hack n slash game which made the game very sub par. I'm pretty sure they also mentioned other things but at the moment that's all I can remember.
@garthvader OK. I'd like to see such games.
The people here defending NoAs decision to not publish this game in NA are hilarious. You haven't even played the game ffs. It's also releasing in 2/3rd of the world through Nintendo so it can't be that bad. It can't be worse than Sonic Boom.
@Koopa-King I lost my respect for NOA over the last five months. That's how long I'd been sending in my "new" 3ds in for repairs that I bought at launch. It had a defective sd card that was interrupting my gameplay sessions. NOA kept sending new unit's back to me saying they Fixed the problem. It's even part of the repair procedure to check the sd card for malfunction's. They never checked it. I just kept getting new units with the same defective card in tow. I even had a manager say they couldn't find the problem and asked me to stop calling. I have zero faith in NOA after my whole ordeal.
@Mus1cLov3r I agree. If the game is below the quality benchmark then I don't expect them to release the game. Has anyone played this game in demo form at a show or anywhere?
@garthvader
Dun forget Wii Music....
@VeeFlamesNL MArio Party 10 - 6.5/10, MArio vs. Donkey Kong Tipping stars - 6.8/10, Wii Play Motion - 4/10, Fling Smash - 4/10, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic -4.5/10, Pokemon Channel - 5/10. I can keep going really. There are plenty... These are reviews from IGN who I think has the fairest reviews over a long period of time and they have been there since N64 so you can view the whole catalog.
I have so many questions now. But I guess it's not like I need another game to add to the mounting backlog stack.
And why is Yoshi's Woolly World not coming out until the fall in NA?
@garthvader nailed it. It's due to the mature nature of this game as to why NoA canned it.
@Superryanworld That really is strange...I've always heard good things about Nintendo support services. I've never heard anything like that. I hope you managed to get it fixed!
@gatorboi352
Nintendo can do no wrong. And even if they do, it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. That's the general attitude of these people. Nintendo and their white knights all live in little bubbles, totally oblivious and ignorant of the happenings in the industry and the actual mass market.
@Aromaiden I still have not seen any official proof, and the game was supposed to be rough a year or 2 ago but It seems like it received some polish from the last trailer shown. A few multiplayer modes look goofy but over all it didn't look bad. I would like to see the source if this was recent. If you have it
@Gamecubed said: "And why is Yoshi's Woolly World not coming out until the fall in NA?"
I'm glad you asked...
http://wiiudaily.com/2015/07/nintendo-no-summer-game-release/
@Spectra_Twilight
I am totally serious...
I am talking about Nintendo as a COLLECTIVE COMPANY. They must have international standards for the games they publish, not just regional ones. I can understand them not wanting to publish a game because of content that may not work in certain regions, now when the game is not being released because of POOR QUALITY, then I think it is incredibly short sighted of them, AS A COMPANY, to still publish it in certain regions.
We live in a highly connected world where word about quality gets out rather quickly. How can NINTENDO justify to their WORLDWIDE user base that a bad quality game deserves to be published by them in certain regions, but not in others???
That just generates bad publicity all around for the Nintendo brand and will surely affect the sales of Devil's Third in Europe and Japan, after all, people in those regions who read that the American arm of Nintendo is not publishing the game will surely have doubts about buying the game...
Bahaha that Devil's Turd line made me lose it!
@Gamecubed I wondered that myself. It seems so silly. We have a summer drought and they could release it.
@gatorboi352 I guess that makes some sense lol
@Spectra_Twilight GREAT GAME!!!!!!!!
@Koopa-King Thanks! I got it working again. Just in time for the next batch of 3d classic's!
You know what will be really funny? If this game comes out and ends up getting good review scores(at least a 7.0) and NOA looks like a fool for not bringing this game over.
Which again, would prove how out of touch NOA really is. Maybe this is a quality issue, but lets not forget that NOA is the same company that made the bone-headed decision to not give Xenoblade or The Last Story a shot until the uproar from fans forced them to change their mind. And then their amazing solution was to put Xenoblade out on a very limited release and give up the NA rights to The Last Story to another company.
I don't trust NOA's decision making at this point. Even more so then the rest of Nintendo, NOA has made numerous blunders over the past several years.
@garthvader
Sigh. I just hope for your case thay you've played those games, but anyway...
Sochi 2014 - Developed be Sega. It was just one of the exclusive deals made by Nintendo.
Mario Party 10 - The game isn't perfect, but it isn't bad, either.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong - My personal opinion, but I found the game very good and addictive, and so have many people.
FlingSmash - Not a perfect game by any means, but lemme guess... "the controls were too complicated."
Wii Play Motion - Haven't played this game by any means, but the general consensus is that it improved on it's prequel.
BTW, it would have helped if you made reference to other review sites, and not just negative ones. It's not like IGN's some master referee who gives the final say on whether a game is bad or not, and everone must follow their orders or something.
@Mush123
I dunno, the whole roll to dodge everything and shoot mechanic was pretty bad.
and the switch to first person mode randomly to shoot missiles was also pretty bad.
gameplay wise, it was a bad game.
@garthvader Well my source for all the apparent errors and flaws in the game is the very same video and discussion done by UnSeen64 which was actually listed under the last article on the website about this game.
One thing that really bugs me is that Nintendo had a their hand in a bit of the development for this game and now they are like "Screw it, it's not good enough for us to publish." Like come on... you don't want to publish a game you helped win the development?
@MikeW I fear this is going to have a major impact on Nintendo as well in the sense that if Devil's Third does end up selling poorly, you now have given Tomonobu Itagaki all the ammunition he needs to blame Nintendo for "screwing" him over.
And to be honest, he has a fair point. He can simply point out that Nintendo agreed to publish his game in all regions, and he, working in good faith believed Nintendo would do their part to uphold their end of the deal. But now, due to NOA backing out, it will likely create a ripple effect that will hurt the game's sales in other regions. If I'm hearing NOA is refusing to even touch this game, then why would I buy it even if I live in Europe or Japan?
I hate to say this, but NOA may have screwed up here. Regardless of the quality of Devli's Third, they should have upheld their end of the deal and published it. Standing on a soapbox now only hurts them now, since Itagaki will now blame all the issues with the game not selling on Nintendo.
He's very well known for being outspoken and confrontational. In a time where Nintendo is trying to court third-parties for the NX, do they really need someone like Tomonobu Itagaki telling the world how Nintendo screwed him over?
Even if NOA is in the right here, Itagaki can simply twist things in his favor, telling the world how Nintendo backed out of a publishing deal, refused to help his studio develop the game, etc.
@khaosklub Well, I only ever played it once and that was when it first came out, so I can't quite remember some of the mechanics. What I do remember is that I enjoyed it, from a gameplay standpoint.
Fair enough that you didn't, everyone has their own opinions.
I really need to replay it at some point though.
At least the game will see the light of day here, even though Nintendo not publishing. Kinda getting feed up with NOA, considering the low amounts of virtual console games, damage controlling, overall low confidence, and Reggie's ignorance.
Who the heck is making decisions at NoA?!
The bad news is that this game is not going to get good reviews it seems.
Funny how people will trust one-half of the rumor that turned out to be true, but not the other half.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR Welcome to Internet 2015, it only gets worse from here.
Glad to see that Devil's Third will be coming to North America. I just wonder what's going on in Nintendo of America.
Well, even if the game turns out to be decent it won't sell well. Nintendo is a business after all.
Regarding Yoshi's late release in NA, I guess they really want people to buy Splatoon to tide them over?
Man, I wish we see as many comments as this for a positive news. I also agree with @flux_capacitor, this website is known for sane people with respected opinions, but now it's becoming more like IGN or Gamespot in terms of trolling and harsh comments. What a shame!
Perhaps Nintendo are holding this back in the US because Fatal Frame is coming out over there first , rather than them questioning it's quality ? Perhaps another publisher has expressed an interest in publishing the game in North America ? Remember , Nintendo let another publisher bring The Last Story out on the Wii in the US and that was as far from low quality as you can get. Anyway , I'm in the UK , so I will know soon enough whether Devil's Third is any good or not. It was always going to be a niche game with diversive visuals and combat mechanics. Personally , I'm still looking forward to it. I know people have issues with how the game looks graphically , but the multiplayer alone sounds intriguing. The game also has a level editor , clan battles , single player with boss fights and is a mature rated Wii U exclusive. It just seems to me that there is a sort of smear campaign going on with the game.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR - or maybe Nintendo's BS is finally starting to annoy even their most hardcore fans?
@dariusq
It's one thing to not bring epic games everyone wants and will buy. It's a total other thing to not bring garbage no one wants and no one will buy. Wouldn't you agree?
@JusticeColde: The rumor was "true". The rumor was Nintendo is not publishing the game. Nothing more
Good thing we have NoA and some NoA loyalists here "saving" us from this game. Thank you, thank you for looking out for us. What would we ever do without you?
@FLUX_CAPACITOR They put input into this game and helped shape this game. Now they are saying it is not good enough to release. Do you know what that tells me? That Nintendo's given up and possibly just doesn't care about the Wii U anymore. They could have delayed this game like they have with all these other titles to help improve it but they didn't. They just gave up and said release it anyway but not by us which i find odd because they had no problem with delaying games before to improve upon them.
They must be refusing to release it because its rubbish. The firm that gave us Pokémon Rumble U, Game and Wario, Dk Jr Math and Wii Music wouldn't want their reputation sullied.
Chortle.
@ikki5 While Nintendo may have had input, it is still Itagaki's game. They can't tell him to delay it or force him to do anything really, they can only defund the project.
@Caryslan In response to #118, NoA will be coming under fire here in a few months over Fire Emblem Fates. Why? Either from the fanbase because they butchered the game from censoring it to hell and back, or from very vocal activists for not censoring it.
@gatorboi352 If NoA canned this game over mature content, then why did they release Bayonetta 2? Or NG3 Razor's Edge? Doesn't make any sense.
Nintendolife's ability to convey journalistic writing to video game material has died. They've joined the ranks of the other teenage run crap websites.
Knowing that euro and Japanese publications gave Ninja Gaiden 3 decent scores while US publications gave it weak scores I can see why it might be considered to be a prospective clunker. That being said it still doesn't make fiscal sense to cut themselves out of a larger profit margin if they already spent the development cash. Activision releases garbage all the time so I don't see anythung supporting the idea that releasing a stinker hurts a publishers sales, especially for a console exclusive, and more so when you are NoA and you defend Metroid:FF and Star Fox as if public perception didn't matter at all. Reggie loves insulting his consumer base 16 hours a day so why wouldn't he continue to do so if it meant more money? The only way that this rumor is true is if NoA was offered money almost equal to their development investment for a Third Party to publish. If Euro zone is still NoE and Japan is NoJ then I don't see Xseed (they import Japanese market titles to NA, not NA market titles to NA), or Deep Silver for that matter picking up the tab. Who would pay for those rights unless it gets them Valhalla as an exclusive developer is really the weak part of this rumor. Unless the game has a strong multiplayer section in which case I could see Activision or Ubisoft picking it up strictly for future DLC sales profit.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR - I'd rather list off things that generally suck about Nintendo right now, like going mobile, Amiibo, no non-XL 3DS in NA, embracing DLC and micro-transactions, losing almost all major third party support, failing to make games for certain franchises that aren't deemed profitable enough, rehashing games ad nauseum, releasing an underpowered system with a gimmick that even they can't justify, etc. Ya know, BS that longtime Nintendo fans are fed up with.
@mike_intv Likely this. Could be they felt a different publisher would have more success, could be the game is a giant mess. Could be a lot of people will look silly when the facts come out and like usual people are complaining about Nintendo on things they have not understood or gotten totally wrong.
@VeeFlamesNL I simply used IGN because they have been around for that long and they have decent (though I don't always agree with them) reviews.I said there were a lot more. I was just starting at the bottom. And you are wrong about Sochi. Copied straight from the developer info on the review:
Genre: Sports
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
I can get more if you want me to but as I said Nintendo HAS made many subpar games. There is proof of this. I don't hate Nintendo, they just are not immune to making bad games because everyone does.
Lets add some more: Pokeman Box Ruby and Saffire 5/10, MArio Party 8 - 5.2/10, Kirby Air ride - 5.8/10 HALLabritories, WiiPlay 5.5/10, Yoshi's Story 6/10,
@IceClimbers
None of it makes sense. That won't stop the zealots manning the barricades though. Fanboyism is ruining modern gaming.
@Stargazer So you are upset that Nintendo don't want to go broke? That they don't consult you to ensure every game is as you want it, rather than something they can use to build the company?
Why should Nintendo make losses to please people who would pribably turn their noses up at the final product because they prejudge things from a single picture or idea?
I trust Nintendo more, I've not been let down by them.
@Stargazer Going mobile is far from a bad thing. In reality, it's a very good business decision, considering that the mobile market is prosperous at the moment and offers a way to earn quick and easy money. Which is every company and businesses dream.
@darth2d2 Publishing and marketing can cost more than development. Nintendo maybe thought they'd make a loss for getting a specific US version, publishing it and marketing it. They can't wear too many losses when people seem to hate Nintendo either way.
It also just occurred to me that NoA could be trying to duck "feminists" from starting some NoA hates women campaign. That is actually the more likely reason if they don't publish. I bet game play is fantastic, but their PR team is killing it before it is released especially because Nintendo had their hands in the development piece. That is why NoJ and NoE aren't backing down.
@TwilightAngel its not all of nintendo decision to not publish it just noa, also be glad it even getting published unless you arn't interested in the game.
@Madadam81 Marketing is the largest cost a publisher takes on, but print and distribution are by far the smallest investment. Devil's Third isn't going to get a huge marketing campaign starting now. With NoJ and NoE still backing it isn't a loss cutting move. Fiscally it doesn't make sense. Not to mention the DLC profits they are cutting themselves out of. Even Forbes has a hard time understanding why they wouldn't just make it a DL only title in the NA region. This is a PR move if it is true.
@garthvader Really? Because coming from Wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_%26_Sonic_at_the_Sochi_2014_Olympic_Winter_Games);
"Developer(s) Sega Sports R&D[1]"
"Publisher(s) Nintendo"
Anyway though, I'm well aware that Nintendo doesn't make very good games all the time.
@VeeFlamesNL Well it is listed differently at IGN so maybe it was joint development? I just made that point because if they are dismissing Devils Third for quality in NA, firstly, it is inconsistent with other territories and , secondly, it is probably better than those games I have listed though I cannot speak for sure. Now if they have production issues, they could throw it on the eShop instead of physical distribution. If marketing is the problem, then I sorta get it but still their treatment of possible developers that could be allies later is why they don't have good 3rd party relations.
@IceClimbers Don't forget the original FE players who hate how they've changed the FE franchise. They'll also bombard NoA as well.
The game is still coming out in NA, so it's not worth making a big deal out of the fact that it needed a different publisher.
@Spectra_Twilight awesome game
@MadAdam81
"They can't wear too many losses when people seem to hate Nintendo either way"
Aw....the poor cash rich multinational profit driven corporation. The 'hate' must really hurt.
@garthvader next payday I'm gonna get it
@Aromaiden
Agreed. Going mobile is a good thing and could be great for Nintendo. I wouldn't be surprised to see them doing more and more in that field and less risky hardware development in the future
@electrolite77 #165 That's pretty true to be honest. Companies like Nintendo, which in general refers to almost all companies, really just want to profit. They really don't place much significance on the opinions of their fans or consumers unless they are being negatively affected by it, but other than that they're perfectly fine with being hated.
@Mus1cLov3r They let games like meme run and the letter be released in the Eshop. Yeah NOA really worries about quality.
@jakysnakydx I guess you'd better start your own Nintendo news site then. Let me know how it goes.
Look at all these people willing to shell out $60 for a sub-par just to "Stick it to the man" ya'll are petty and pathetic.
The game is still coming to NA, why are you getting mad?
Itagaki has made a post on his facebook page about these rumors, he said: "The world brims over with lies and rumors. Thanks always, mates.".
@ReallyFeelingIt And your the pinnacle of human evolution I take it?
@Azooooz Would you mind providing a link, please?
@Aromaiden check his Facebook page!
@ReallyFeelingIt Actually to show with your wallet is the only way a company will see things the way you want them to. Buy Devils Third instead of Mario Party 21,000,000 W U 2 LUV U Edition and maybe they will see that a mature game sells and be more inclined to back them. Don't buy these half games that they give us instead of high quality full Nintendo games and they will stop making them. Makes perfect sense.
For people wondering why some people are upset by this, I'm putting a lot of this on NoA's inability to communicate.
There was about 300 comments abut this rumour yesterday, so people were already burning embers about this when today's news broke, and I'm not sure it's even news yet adn still not just more rumours.
But Reggie was at E3 answrring questions, he's the face of NoA all he had ot say back then was "NoA is nto publsihing DT". Would some peopel have bene uypset? Yes. But hten you just get the quick upset. Letting rumours build up over months only fo rpeoel to find out th enews thru even more ruomours just amkes the reaction worse.
We liv ein th eage of social media - Miiverse, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter - when NoE adn NoJ announced they were publishing DT, that's when NoA shouldn 'thave announce dthey weren't. End of story.Don't let the ruomers fester, festering rumours breed even more bad blood. Nip them in th ebid.
That is one of NoA's worse problems, communication. Reggie speaks all the time, but everything he says seems to only be goblydegook corporate speak and only make things worse. He should learn to speak plainly and clearly on things that matter, it would ease the hurt. There's a reason Iwata always says "please understand", he's making the effort. Reggie is just Reggie. That;s why people are always getting so upset, the communication from NoA and NoJ adn NoE is garbage.
@Jay1984
You just gotta play it. Many chuckles and head shaking will ensue. Lol
@garthvader How about I buy neither and keep my money for good games.
@Superryanworld Of course not I'm trash but at least I'm not bickering over something this boring.
If the game is bad, as implied by comments quoted in the Unseen64 video, well, I guess it'll get quickly devaluated in Europe and I'll be able to purchase it without all that much risk.
@ReallyFeelingIt We don't know if it's a bad game yet. It may be really fun. It looked fun to me and the multi player looks great. Yes the graphics are dated but they don't look bad in the single player campaign just a little old.
@rjejr: Nailed it again! Can you please be the spokesmen for those who don't blindly except what the Master NoA doesn't do for its subjects?
What kind of people are running Nintendo? Why did they throw money at this in the first place?
"Worst. Game. Ever."
It's not even been released yet and people have already made their minds up. Jeezus. Can't wait until the actual news articles start again and the clickbait rumours stop.
I hope it is XSEED that publishes this. They do a very good job on Japanese ports.
@WiltonRoots I find the main reason being because of the last article on the game and because of Unseen64's video on it.
@Jay1984 NOA has a history of not releasing some pretty good games because they don't think they are good enough. Just look at Pandora's Tower, Disaster: Day of Crisis, and The Last Story.
I don't play games like this typically, but the story seemed interesting to some degree. Plus... it's been a while since I've played a good shooter. Europeans: lemme know how this game turns out. I do hope it isn't as bad as NoA supposedly thinks it is.
Well I hope we get a release date soon. I'm still going to get it because I often like games that are not as widely received in the US.
@aromaiden I usually reserve my opinion until something comes out. I have noticed a change over the last month on this site, if I just read the comments section in here I'd never want to pick up a game again in my life it's so depressing. But in the meantime I have a backlog of great games to get through, until I get through those (which will take me ages as I rarely spend prolonged periods in the house), I'm not really concerned about what's out there and will happily wait until something good comes along, and it looks like there's still plenty of good stuff out there to look forward to.
@Haiassai I believe this site is European, so no doubt they'll be giving everyone the heads up very quickly. It'd be cool if there was a downloadable demo in the Euro eshop so people can test the water before buying...let's just wait and see.
I think the best policy is whenever you see the word rumour in the heading, is to treat it like it is, just a bit of gossip to increase traffic on someone's website. Seems to be working a treat round here, Unseen64's hit count has probably gone through the roof recently!
@rjejr Yeah, an early NX announcement about specs would probably work great too. I expect by the time Nintendo announce it sometime next year that the damage of the less powerful than PS4 rumour will have already been too much.
Even if it is a "Devil's Turd", I'm excited to get my hands on something different for the Wii U. With it's backstory of development hell, the involvement of Nintendo, and the likelihood that it won't sell well, this game will be a collector's dream in a few years.
Better buy two - one to play and trade-in if it's garbage, and one to resell at a profit ten years from now. Even better if it ends up being a cult hit like W101.
@Grumblevolcano I would imagine that being kind of difficult for Nintendo, considering that they already stated that they weren't going to talk about the NX, specifically its specs. To think that their hand may be forced due to a rumor, sounds like it would be very annoying.
The comments on this article are delicious. DE-licious.
I get that operation Rainfall was certainly a show of NoA's stupidity but this feels so much different. Time has passed since then and I'm fairly certain that the people who thought not publishing it were fired (rightfully so) but at least we had details. Devil's third has been so silent both from Nintendo and Itigaki. I just want some info before I start saying "NoA y u do dis" or "OBVIOUSLY BAD GAME". Assuming doesnt help.
@mike_intv lol at using Bayonetta in this analysis. When the original Bayonetta launched in 2009, the PS3's install base was over 20 million and the 360's over 30 million. That's over 50 million potential customers. The Wii U's install base was under 9 million last fall. The only thing that helped Bayonetta 2 was that there are so few pickings on the Wii U in the first place.
@Koopa-King Same here. It could have had a similar development problem to the infamous Colonial Marines where Nintendo signed up for something and got something completely different. Itagaki did say the game looked completely different now. I personally think the game has some sort of adult content the NoA was too image-conscious to get on board with.
Fatal Frame IV didn't come out in North America because "the controls weren't intuitive enough." Lying is never nice, the ones making these decisions should just admit to being horrible cowards and a waste of the planets resources.
Hopefully NA gets this before the end of the year.
@SetupDisk Well it's clear that the F-Zero "needing a better controller" situation is pretty much identical. Nothing but lies!
So, not news.
@Grumblevolcano
Is that what it is now? Last time I heard it was no new direction for the franchise. I don't know HD with more cars/greater speeds and online seem like a few directions to me. Just say you don't think it will sell for crying out loud.
If the controller is the new line even with just the gamepad they could do some great stuff with custom car skins you could create.
So, NoA hates money? I lost all respect for NoA and I'm happy I'm with PlayStation now, they know what we want! European ppl are lucky to have NoE, cause NoA really sucks
Judging by the comments here, it's quite obvious that the comments in the review of this game will be ridiculous, even if the review goes either way.
I think it would be very funny if this game comes out and is super fun and way better than all of us originally thought... that would make me laugh.
@hYdeks I think that it's mostly just Reggie and the poor Japanese Leaders that don't understand anything about what western gamers want.
@SetupDisk While it's frustrating there's still one huge worse thing they could do, release a new proper F-Zero exclusive to smartphones.
@Grumblevolcano @Aromaiden - "they already stated that they weren't going to talk about the NX"
Yes, but they seem to have talked about it at every opportunity since then. And if they don't want to talk about something, they shouldn't have opened up the E3 ND by saying "NX". And you don't talk about how you dont want to talk about it b/c other companies will steal your secret ideas. Both other companies already have consoles out, if they want to steal your ideas next gen they will. So they shouldn't have said that b/c everybody translated that into "gimmick".
So they should either talk about it or not talk about it. But they've mentioned it on several occasions now, you can't put the genie back in the bottle. Or close the barn doors after the horse is out. Or close Pandora's box.
Also - "we only show games that are coming out in the near future", but they didn't show Zelda U, which means it isn't coming out in the near future, so 2017 then? They just keep saying stupid things over and over and over. "That wasn't an apology" when it was obvious to everyone it was. And even if it wasn't, he didn't make the apology, so it isn't his place to say whether or not it was.
This is Ninteod since E3, throwing gasoline on the fire.
OK, I'm out of cliche's now.
@Ryno - "spokesmen"
I don't do spokesman. If they need a cult leader I can send them my resume. I'll build an altar in my basement to the Wii Mini. Worked for L Ron Hubbard.
@TwilightAngel That's a completely different situation; Meme Run and the Letter (I actually liked the Letter, but whatever) were developed and released by companies other than Nintendo, so the quality of the product(s) has nothing to do with Nintendo; if they were to produce Devil's Third—on the other hand—and it was terrible, it'd be a black mark on Nintendo's record. I mean, X-Seed will still release Devil's Third on the Wii U, I'd imagine, so it'll be no different than Meme Run and the Letter being released; but Nintendo has nothing to do with any of 'em, except for letting the companies release it own their system—but what I mean by "worried about quality" is, they're worried about the quality of their games, not the games of others.
This game smells more like absolute rubbish the more this NoA issue rumbles on.
Does it really matter if Nintendo or someone else sells this game in N.America?
Why all the fuss?
Some Nintendo fans are do damn desperate to have an adult 18+ shooter on the Wii U that they intend to buy this game no matter how bad it can possibly turn out to be. I hope it turns out good but I wouldn't bet my mother in law on it.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR
In the UK the "very young" don't buy Wii Us or really care for Nintendo. Maybe where you are from they do but from my experiences ( and I don't claim them to be scientific ) Nintendo home consoles are generally owned by adults over 30 and thus will most likely be the people frequenting and commenting on this site.
Also, from months of reading comments by the most frequent posters on this forum, many recall playing the N64 and earlier consoles so unless you are like 100 years old and consider people in their 30s "very young" I disagree with you. They may act immature but that's a mental state of being.
@rjejr Not really, all mentions of the NX up to this point have been tiny and unspecific. If anything, they mention the NX once and then never return to it again, they have yet to go into depth and discuss the NX, let alone talk about it at every moment. All these ideas of what the NX is nothing more than people jumping to conclusions based on vague mentionings of it, and creating unnecessary rumors, which in the end have no real effect on anyone.
If people are unable to simply wait and hear the truth and facts from the source itself and allow themselves to be influenced by rumors, then that is their own fault. Nintendo's acknowledgement of the NX doesn't translate to them having to discuss and reveal details that they would rather keep secret. In the end, the idea that Nintendo shouldn't have acknowledged or mentioned the NX if they didn't want rumors spreading, is merely an excuse used by others to justify the spreading of rumors and untrue information, and even before they had acknowledged it, rumors and "information" on it were still plentiful (and probably would have continued, knowing how rumors work). So it makes no difference whether they acknowledged it or not, the situations would be the same.
@darth2d2 well there has been a bunch of aaa games which were very cleverly Marketed even if they turned out crap in the end aka watch dogs, resi6,tomb raider, every call of duty game, even still the effort put into these games are still shown and in comparison still makes nintendo 1st party games look like they should be next to the fisher price toys isle.
@mh1989 By that, do you mean they appear childish?
Huh looking around the web for a while about this. I'm going to wait for reviews cause by the sound it,it's broken as hell. I'll just wait then.
@TwilightAngel That would probably be the best decision.
Hey, remember when Nintendo didn't want to publish The Last Story? Then it became XSeed's best selling title with solid reviews across the board? We'll see if Devil's Third gets bad reviews before leaping to Nintendo's defence.
@binaryfragger people flipflop on here too much. Sometimes it reminds me of kids in the back of the car going "are we there yet? are we there yet???" The same as people who are done with the NX even though there's not going to be any announcement until 2016. And maybe it might get released that year, maybe 2017. But already it stinks before a motherboard's even been finalised. We're living in a me me me, now now now, I know it stinks before I've seen the specs or the finished product era. I skipped a whole generation after the gamecube as none of the 7th gen consoles remotely interested me, and thought I'd get back into gaming via the wii u, but wow. This crowd...
@WiltonRoots Its basically how the world is honestly. People reacting in the heat of the moment and being overly entitled.
@Aromaiden bang on the money. It's the fact people get so wound up over games. We're living in Generation NOW. In fact it's not even that any more. It's Generation One Year From NOW. If you fail to live up to the hype before a soldering iron's even been pulled out, you're in trouble.
Happythe game is finally coming. As usual que the hateful comments for a third party game on a Nintendo console. I wonder why third party games never sell well for Nintendo, with all the " It looks like a PS2 game I won't get it " people but Star Fox Zero looks like a GC game and the same people who bash this game for its visuals say how great it looks.
@BLPs - I'm pretty sure Flux is gonna be mad seeing his name associated w/ mine, just a head's up.
Have a good weekend.
@AVahne Bit of an exaggeration, don't you think?
I hope that the game isn't really that bad and the only reason Nintendo doesn't want to publish it is because of mature content concerns affecting Nintendo's image.
The speculation has given me enough concern that I'll wait to see what the reviews say before making my purchase. I was really excited for this game but the lack of info at E3 got me worried. I'm glad to here it's coming to North America though. I don't really care how it gets here, just that a more mature action game offering is coming to Wii U consoles.
I'm sure somewhere in the 200+ comments it's been mentioned but i'll say it anyway. haha "devil's turd". couldn't ask for a more perfect pun if the game ends up a massive disappointment.
@HotRodimus people who say this looks like Ps2 have a pretty piss poor memory. Ps3/360 yes but nothing earlier.
@garthvader At that point, they're kind of exaggerating. The game's graphics are pretty average, and I don't think that was even one of the main complaints about the game in the other sources.
I wish I were surprised by this news. I really do. But after the past few weeks of bad news Nintendo has been dishing out, it's just another normal weekday. Whoever is in charge of Nintendo's PR department sure has a lot of work to do!
It's kind of good that Nintendo has been flubbing it so badly since E3. It means that Nintendo fans (like myself) are finally forced to open their eyes and see them for the out-of-touch, prideful company they really are.
Change happens through critique and honest feedback, not blindly defending every action as being a good one. Most people on this site have been defending all of Nintendo's questionable decisions this generation (crappy console reveal, crappy third party support, artificial scarcity, amiibo shortages, Youtube Creators Program, locked on-disc DLC that's only accessible through $13+ amiibo, tablet controller that not even Nintendo knows how to make games for, etc.), but now E3 and Nintendo's subsequent mishaps are driving away even the most devoted of Nintendo fans (like myself).
Everyone in the comment section who is complaining about negative reactions needs to a) understand you're in a comment section, where people are (believe it or not) allowed to express positive and negative opinions, and b) understand that Nintendo has no incentive to change things unless its fans speak out with their voices and, most importantly, their wallets. Pretending nothing is wrong is only giving Nintendo further reason to continue in their current direction.
@FlaygletheBagel I don't necessarily defend Nintendo, rather I just dislike the idea of unnecessary hatred and spite. Although I will entirely agree with you. Nintendo is going through a tough time, and I believe most of it is being caused by their own ideals. I honestly think that Nintendo really only manages to survive because of their IPs, which alone carry so much influence,
I think at this point, it's make it or break it for Nintendo, and although they are known to be arrogant, I honestly do believe they can make a comeback. Similar to how Microsoft did, but in my opinion, I feel they have to let go of the past and move on. I honestly believe that if Nintendo could just match the other companies (although I do prefer to remain unbiased) in technology, then that along with their IPs would really push them ahead, but because of their outdated beliefs, they're holding themselves back. In a way, they're their own worst enemy.
I find that although they are arrogant, since they are a company when their actions start affecting their profits, they'll be forced to make changes. Just as Microsoft has done, as I see them to be a perfect example of how much a company can change, with enough incentive.
@Aromaiden @FlaygletheBagel Well said gentlemen.
@Koopa-King Uh, yeah, like what's up with Europe and Japan being so cool with it, if it's the game quality that's supposedly in question? I can't imagine that it's a performance issue, like cruddy framerate, or something.
They could well have faked or exaggerated, but the Treehouse seemed to dig the game, last year, so what gives?
Y'know what? I'll bet it's just because of the "Devil" in the name.
@Aromaiden The thing with Microsoft was thanks to a change in leadership, Don Mattrick damaged the brand a lot with the stupid Xbox One decisions. Don being replaced by Phil Spencer is what really helped the company recover and I'd say he's been very good at bringing the Xbox brand back to a positive view.
@Aromaiden
Exactly. Incentive needs to be there before Nintendo has any chance of changing for the better.
Although at this point, I don't know if even releasing a powerful console will solve their woes. Even if Nintendo does everything else right, they're launching mid-generation when PS4 and Xbox One will likely be hitting their stride. PS4 will probably be fast approaching 40 million sales, and Xbox One will be gaining significant traction too. PS4 and Xbox One will have tons of games to choose from by that point. Nintendo, meanwhile, will be starting from zero. And if the average hardcore gamer has already spent 400 dollars on a machine that plays current gen games, would they really be willing to shell out another 400 just to play half of those games, plus the few extra Nintendo titles? Already Nintendo has to pitch to people who want to (or who are able to) buy a second console, which is hurting their chances as it is.
Not only are they launching mid-generation, but they also have the near-impossible task of winning back third party publishers and developers, and winning back the goodwill of its own dwindling fanbase. That's something that took Sony a whole generation to do with the PS3. And Nintendo hasn't even started doing those things today (especially not with their fanbase)!
I don't know. It's an uphill battle for sure. One I hope they succeed at, but one that I have the sinking feeling they're going to fail at. And if they fail, hopefully they go third party so they can still provide hardcore experiences without the 400 dollar entry point.
@electrolite77 I'm guessing would prefer a profit driven company that doesn't want to accumulate debt and go under? They aren't a charity, and if they were, they would provide more important things than games.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR @DiscoGentleman @WiltonRoots @jakysnakydx
See my above comment (243) on why negative feedback is a good thing.
I'm glad people are finally critiquing Nintendo, because it's been a long time coming, and it breeds positive change. If you only wanted to read positive content, why are you even in a comment section? Why are you even on this journalistic website, which sometimes involves negative opinions? If you want blissfully ignorant positivity, you'd be more satisfied reading promotional materials on Nintendo's official website.
@FlaygletheBagel yet there's a difference between genuine criticism and fan boy hate from jumping to conclusions, it's important to be able to tell the two apart.
@MadAdam81 I'd argue even negative reactions that seem like "fan boy hate" will still help Nintendo in some way. It means even their most faithful fans are starting to get upset with them. It still leads to them changing, but you're right - I personally would rather see more healthy critique and less hate.
I'd also argue the more harmful fanboy reaction of the two extremes is rushing to Nintendo's side to defend their every action, even when their actions make no sense and continually strip away their own fans. Sometimes negativity is needed. With a company like Nintendo, it takes a lot of it to get through their pride.
Do I endorse blind hate? No. But a lot of people here have a right to be upset with them.
@BinaryFragger Except... most of the people already judging this game are the same people who hate Fed Force.
personally, I disagree with the notion that this game looks bad, because I think it looks pretty good for what it is. But alas, the comment section is always ridiculous, so...
@VeeFlamesNL Agreed.
Obviously we need to look at this with an open mind. I don't think this necessarily means that it's a bad game, but perhaps NoA felt it was too violent. Being an American, they can get really weird about what's appropriate for over here. They censor the strangest things sometimes, like with FE: Awakening DLC for example.
Do not take this as i agree with these choices, btw, cause I don't. And yes, I'm aware that Bayonetta still made it over here. I'm just saying NoA gets weird sometimes.
Not saying that's what happened, maybe the game is just buggy, but I feel it's such an open ended comment.
This is the problem with there being three unique divisions of Nintendo in a world with the internet. All they succeed in doing is angering fans in the different regions when one misses out on something because it is deemed, "unacceptable" for the market. Just release the game (even if it is only digitally) and let the market decide. It is stupid crazy that there is a piecemeal distribution of content.
Unless it is a specific licensing issue, then a Virtual Console, eShop or Video Game release should be worldwide for Nintendo at this point.
@FJOJR
Metroid Other M was super fun!! Loved the mechanics of that game way more than Prime!
@MadAdam81
??????
I'm saying you don't need to cry about the 'hate' they receive as you call it. I have no problem with them being a profit driven company. I treat them accordingly I.e.they are there to be criticised if they do not meet my expectations.
@FlaygletheBagel
people have been criticising Nintendo for over 20 years now bud, where've you been!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR
"The problem is that you are an imbecile."
You really expect me to take your points seriously when you use an ad hominem like that? Especially after you go on a noble rant about how you hate trolling? That sure gives validity to your argument.
All of my criticisms of Nintendo have been perfectly reasonable. The rumors turned out to be true and Nintendo is not publishing this game in North America. Just because the game is still coming out in North America does not change that fact.
My underlying point was not even so much about this particular piece of news, but rather the long string of problems Nintendo keeps stepping into post-E3, and how little they seem to care about rectifying those problems. Maybe if you had taken my comment in its context you would've seen that.
No... No, no, no, Nintendo of America CAN'T be this stupid. There HAS to be something going on behind the scenes that we're not privy to.
@FlaygletheBagel Actually I thought the rumor ended up being false, at least according to NoA latest tweet and Unseen64's reaction.
@PlywoodStick You should look at the new article. It'll clear things up.
@Aromaiden Ah, my apologies. I hadn't seen the most recent story from today. Thanks for pointing that out!
Color me surprised.
@FlaygletheBagel Your welcome
@FLUX_CAPACITOR
Nope. I'm not Quorthon. If you look at my post history, I have interacted with him several times. And I was a pretty blind defender of Nintendo pretty early on in my post history too. It took me much longer to get burnt out on Nintendo than it took him, as far as I know.
Yes, as surprising as it is, there's more than one person on this site who takes issue with takes the way Nintendo does things.
@MikeW Good news, Nintendo confirmed they are bringing this possibly bad game here in the U.S. too! People got worked up over a false rumor - SHOCKER!
@XCWarrior
Smart move on Nintendo's part! It wouldn't look good for them to disavow the game in the Americas.
There's another rumor that XSeed might be involved with the publishing duties. We shall see...
@beautifulstrong Can't tell if joking, too young to know any better, or just have bad taste.
Anyway, on Devil's Third, this doesn't paint a good picture, if there really is that kind of quality issue. I still guess that it's more a content thing, than one of quality.
