Nintendo consoles have been privy to some incredibly unusual controllers in their time, most of which are a bit rubbish and don't really improve gameplay in any way. However these previous blunders haven't deterred Grendel Games from designing a Wii U eShop game called Underground and an accompanying controller to accurately replicate necessary skills for keyhole surgery.
The device requires two Wii Remotes and Nunchuks and allows the user to move the arms in-game so that their movements are immediately replicated on screen. We've even managed to get our hands on one such controller in order to be able to show it to you today, so make sure you cast your eyes over the video below to see this peculiar and specialist device in action.
You can learn more about Underground and its ludicrous input device by checking out the game's website.

LOVE the Scrubs reference. Subtle, hilarious, perfect.
I want that controller so badly. I'm taking medical classes at the moment, but laproscopic surgery on my Wii U would be so cool.
This was featured on a Horizon special about video games the other day. The idea is that it replicates the skill set needed (which Alex, my lovely, you just don't have!) to perform keyhole surgery. The background has a lot going on so that teaches the brain to be more focussed and the controllers mimick the level of precision needed etc. Students have said it really helps and frankly, yes, I would prefer someone didn't have to practise on real people if Alex's skill set is anything to go on. No offence intended, mate!
lol..."robutts", or however you would spell that. xp
@ninty4thewin The game came out in January but the controller was released publically much later.
@BarryDunne Fancy seeing you here xD The cube-life mario amiibo turned out great!
I don't need this. I beat Skyward Sword with a Wii controller and I'm left handed, which in my book makes me qualified to perform brain surgery.
"It's Hfuhruhurr. It's spelled exactly like it sounds. H-F-U-H-R-U-H-U-R-R".
Well, that certainly looked uncomfartably awkward. I had never heard of this game before... is it any good? Tbh it didn't look like much fun and I had no idea what was going on most of the time. That may just be me, though. XD
Anything to do with the Wii U is awesome!
I witnessed laparoscopic surgery live just yesterday. Always pretty awesome to see. Not so sure about the controller.
When did Alex become an OBGYN?
Best photo in my Twitter feed today.
well, thats nice
wat. That's hilarious.

Looks broken to me, maybe the controller peripheral can be adapted into a Mech Assault game for Wii U?
@AshFoxX Mech Assault? That makes me cry, just as much as the way MS also ruined Shadowrun.
However I was still surprised that MS actually put a Mech Warrior game on a NIntendo console, I actually forgot that it had happened, so it does mean that a Minecraft version on Wii U is definitely not out of the question.
I just wish we could get a proper remake of Activisions Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, or my next favourite Mech game, a new Front Mission game but in the style of Front Mission 3.
I'm kind of interested in this game and will probably pick it up if it ever gets on sale.
Last week Horizon did a video game episode and they had surgeons training by playing games with a controller set up very close to this.
@MadAdam81 agreed, sir. I'm not even a mech fan but we are long overdue for a new Front Mission. I was just making a mech assault joke about the expensive complicated controller for the one game. Never played mech assault myself, but anyone who mentions Front Mission 3 is a darn hero in my book.
Oh yeah, I am so spending 250 euros in a controller! For a single game!
It's a neat idea, I just hope the game and hardware is functionally rock solid.
I don't think I want Alex preforming my surgery...
I completed Underground 100% with Wii U GamePad controls. It was quite good if you're out for something different. It's a little rough around the edges though. I'd replay it if I had access to that other controller.
When I read about this game after it came out, I was really intrigued. I looked at their website and was interested in buying the special controller. Then I saw how much it cost
Since I couldn't afford the 250 Euro, getting to see it in action in this video, at least I can get an idea of what it is like to play the game with it.
Did you guys have to buy the controller or did Grendel Games send you one for the review ?
