What's that? Did someone say 'Switch Pro'? Oooh, 'New Nintendo Switch', is it!? A more powerful variant with 4K resolution Deep Learning Super Sampling? 60 frames-per-second? Carbon fibre styling? Swiss Army Switch?...
It wasn't long after the Switch launched back in 2017 that rumours of a hardware revision started circling. You name it, it's been proposed by somebody, and while we've done our best to follow our noses and document credible scuttlebutt regarding a potential revised model of Nintendo's handheld hybrid, sorting wild speculation from well-founded theories based on evidence can be tough when Nintendo are so full of surprises.
The release of the handheld-only Switch Lite in 2019 shed some light on SoC revision rumours, but even that caught some onlookers by surprise. A Switch that doesn't switch!? That's the stupidest idea ever! Oh, hang on...
It's clear that Nintendo has something in the pipeline, though, be it a Switch 'Pro' or a 'New Nintendo Switch'. The current console has overtaken several legacy systems in sales terms and is even outpacing the mighty Wii at the time of writing, and Nintendo will want to keep that pace up.
But will we see a new model this year? Well, analysts seem to think so, but some of them were predicting an upgraded version two years ago. As for Team NL, opinion is split. Below we present some of the points we've been discussing, and at the bottom is a poll — we'd love to hear your thoughts!
So, let's take a look at the (Switch) pros and cons for a potential Switch hardware revision sometime in 2021. We begin with the arguments against...
No way!
The naysayers amongst us believe — quite reasonably — that the impetus to introduce a new Switch model this year just isn't there while the regular version is selling by the truckload. Simply put, Nintendo doesn't need a new console to drive interest and anything it does put out would likely cannibalise sales of the current model.
It's an age-old dilemma for successful hardware manufacturers: when is the best time to sacrifice the golden goose and invest in the future?
if the 'old' model continues to sell like hot cakes, there's no reason at all to rush a flashy gateau to market
Given the events of the past year, it's likely that whatever plans Nintendo had have been shifted back by several months, if not due to production issues then by re-evaluating the release schedule after an unforeseeable lockdown-fueled sales boost. Yes, business is booming and a new console (a more powerful one, at least) really needs a new game or two to show it off; a Zelda or a Metroid Prime 4, for example. If they're not ready yet, and if the 'old' model continues to sell like hot cakes, there's no reason at all to rush a flashy gateau to market.
On the topic of those Switches flying off shop shelves right now, all those millions of people who picked up a new console — perhaps a flashy Monster Hunter one or that Red & Blue Super Mario number — might not be too happy if a month later there's a a shiny new variety they could have bought instead.
Nope, even if Nintendo originally planned to release a new Switch this year, there's no chance they'll risk disrupting the sales momentum they've got going right now.
Alternatively...
Yes way!
As we've seen with Nintendo's decades-long history of hardware revisions, a modest upgrade can work wonders by offering tweaks and improvements that give fervent fans an opportunity to buy something new — sometimes multiple times — without deserting a hard-won customer base still buying your Animal Crossings and your Mario Kart 8s. It's this thinking that created the Nintendo DS and 3DS 'families' of systems, and we've already had the first addition to the Switch dynasty with Switch Lite.
a modest upgrade can work wonders by offering tweaks and improvements that give fervent fans an opportunity to buy something new — sometimes multiple times — without deserting a hard-won customer base
If we look back at the 3DS timeline specifically, the XL variant arrived around eighteen months after the original, and the New 3DS launched less than four years after the original. Switch launched in March 2017, Switch Lite arrived eighteen months later in September 2019 and the original console will be four years old in a couple of months. Obviously, we're not quite comparing like for like here thanks to Switch's hybrid nature, but it's hard to argue that the well-loved launch models picked up by early adopters are looking a bit tired and dog-eared these days. The original model is due a spruce up, and something more comprehensive than an internal 'silent' revision.
And as for not wanting to kill the current model's momentum, Nintendo has been in the game long enough to know that you strike while the iron is hot! You turn the flames right up, give people a second to catch their breath and then whack the dial up to eleven! You've got to keep that ball rolling! Letting up because everything's ticking along just fine and dandy isn't the way to sustain growth in the video game... game.
Hot irons, balls rolling — all aboard the Mixed Metaphor Express: next stop, Switch Pro! You see, we've thrown a train in there now, too.
And who exactly are these millions of new Switch owners who'll be mad if a new model appears? That's just how the half-step console cookie crumbles, we're afraid; it's the same with any iterative upgrade in the tech world. For die-hard Nintendo fans, yes, of course it would be disappointing to spend money on a console only to have a new model turn up a matter of weeks later, but those hardcore fans will have bought a Switch long ago and they'll likely be champing at the bit for a Pro model. No self-respecting Apple aficionado would buy a new iPhone at the end of August, would they? Early adopters are hungry for the new flavour, and casual players will happily play the original or Lite variants.
Yep, mark our words, at some point this year — October or November time, we'd wager — there'll be a new Switch on the block. Probably.
For the record, Nintendo has stated that it's not planning to release a new Switch model "any time soon", although this time last year they specified that no new model would be launched "in 2020". Bearing in mind how careful they are with this sort of language, it's not a stretch to deduce that they've got something planned for the latter half of the year. That's not 'any time soon', right?
Either way, it's clear from all the rampant rumours that there's an appetite for a mid-cycle refresh. Last year we asked you what features you'd want to see in a Switch 'Pro', and from a total of nearly 20,000 votes 'a more powerful CPU' came top of the list (followed by 'increased resolution' and 'a thinner bezel' around the screen). The desire is there, then; Nintendo just needs to figure out how to capitalise on fans' hunger for something new in a way that's additive to its current sales momentum.
That, and it'll need a sweet name. 'Pro', 'New' — they've been done. How about "Nintendo Switch Up"? "Switch On"? "Switchin'"...
Quick, let's get to the poll before it gets worse:
Let us know your thoughts on the potential for a new Switch model this year in the usual place.
Comments 132
Thought Nintendo said they weren't focusing on one right now. If anything, it's best to wait since the Switch is still massively popular.
I feel like it's about the right time for a mid-cycle refresh seeing as how it's been 4 years since the original debuted, but I call bs on stuff like "oh it'll be 4K and it'll be basically like a completely overhauled console with the ability to run next gen games like the PS5/Series X|S"
It'll be more like the PS4 Pro and how it compliments the base model but no way in hell they're making any exclusives specifically for the revision.
LMAO y’all - stop trying to make Fetch happen
Unless it's on par with XsX and PS5 I don't really see the point in a revision - we still won't be getting the big AAA cross platform releases and even if we do, they will still be years after the original release.
What are the chances that prognosticators will own up to failed predictions, or even apologize? I remember quite clearly all the skepticism toward the Switch in 2017, including predictions that it would sell more poorly than the GameCube...
i think they absolutely should, and i thought it would be inevitable, but the fact that we are getting so many new limited edition normal switches makes me think otherwise :,)
Unless it's 100x better than the normal switch, i aint buyin
I'd rather be happy if a pro model could handle 1080p 60 fps docked and 720p 60 fps handheld for any game released till 2020. And yes, no drifts please.
I think they were planning on releasing an updated model Q4 2020 or early this year until the shutdowns boosted sales. Now they're probably holding off till next year when sales will need another boost.
It's a matter of when they will do it, and what will they do to improve the existing hardware.
I think it's possible but unlikely. Switch sales are indeed doing really well as is.
I think a price cut might happen this year and a new model next year is far more likely.
Personally I want any new device to be a premium model. To justify the purchase it needs either more internal memory or a second SD card slot. Native wireless audio. A 1080p screen and enough power to run most games in 1080p both portable and docked. And it needs at least 5 solid hours of battery life.
Finally it must not divide the install base. No "Switch Pro exclusive" games. If PC games have been able to develop games that can run on a range of hardware since the 1970s, then consoles can do the same. Let the base model be the minimum requirements and games run nicer on the improved model.
I've been eagerly awaiting an upgrade for a while now honestly. I need my Switch without drift and shell-cracking issues and a better battery. If that's all the improvement the Pro is getting I'll take it honestly.
Slim to none. The Switch is the best selling console for more than two years straight. Why would Nintendo bother releasing either a mid-gen refresh or a successor right now? https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/01/the_switch_has_been_the_top_console_in_the_us_for_25_months_in_a_row
Switch Pro would sound too confusing with PS5 Pro.
I don't plan on upgrading, but I think it would be smart of Nintendo to push out an upgraded Switch that while not making any radical changes, could run games like Astral Chain with smoother frame rate. Oh yeah, and has controllers that work! With with the Switch as successful as it is, I wouldn't push a major change that might split the Switch base like the New 3DS did.
My biggest hope would be that when you play a game on the Switch Pro in Handheld-Mode it automatically uses the Base Switch Docked mode for that game. Cause that way games like XC2, XC DE or TW3 would run in 720p in Handheld-Mode without the need of an update
There will be a new switch. But I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed
2021 is completely plausible for a new Switch revision and I'll buy it at launch. Fwiw, I think it will be akin to New 3DS v 3DS in power. Not PS4 Pro v PS4.
To me I would only get an upgrade if it can make games run at either 60 fps or if they are an unstable framerate on the switch make it run at a stable 30 with no drops.
If they were to add a resolution boost then I would say 1440p docked and 1080p handheld but in turn this would make games that could run at 60 at 1080p dock and 720p handheld run at 30 or have the unstable framerate.
@Averagewriter I agree, and am surprised that I don't encounter this opinion more often.
Disabling the big screen/HDMI-Out function as a cost-savings measure, and a method of shrinking the form factor, was penny-wise and pound-foolish. I am convinced that there are and were other ways to achieve these goals. I am not against the idea of a more portable Switch, but to lose your hardware's best feature...
.....zzzzZzzzzzzzZZZZ.....zzzzzZZzzz...
sorry... but..... i... no. just no. leave me alone.
If they plan to release the new zelda this year then yes. A game this big cant afford to be under 30fps like AoC
All I will say is, some new AAA in house studio games please Nintendo, 2020 was a drought from the in house teams. Not sure what they doing but let’s have a couple of NEW AAA in house big hitters please.
The reason to release a new version isn't to expand the Switch install base, but to ensure existing fans are still playing.
Are the people from 2017 still playing Switch? It's that audience that a new Switch is for
Definitely time for an update. Will help with ports and such. The timing will have to be right. The switch has so much momentum I understand their hesitation. I personally if they don’t release information of a upgrade by mid summer will just mod and overclock.
My switch is falling apart and I desperately need an upgrade. I'll most likely be buying another switch this year whether a pro comes out or not.
I'd be happy with a new model even if it was an incremental upgrade, my Switch isn't anywhere near its last legs but I sure do love me a shiny new toy.
Is is happening? Well, like I said elsewhere, that depends on a number of factors, but the current level of vanilla Switch sales says no (like the chances of Mario Kart 9 any time soon given current sales.of 8 DX).
Will Nintendo do it anyway? Ehh, who knows?
While stock issues are preventing the ps5 and new xbox being much competition now, once available and with a decent new library of games, they will be a real threat.
Knowing that many early 2017 switch buyers will be looking for something new, nintendo will want to stop these customers from jumping ship.
I would have thought we could expect to see something mid year.
New switch on the block,
early adopters need a fix,
Pro switch makes me sick,
And Ill think its fly, when standalone non pro dock drop by
For the summer, for the summer.
Guys I think we got a hit lol.
They’re better off riding the current Switch for a few more years and then come out with a successor, over a potentially more powerful mid life upgrade. Otherwise they’d have a PS4/XB1 - PS5/XBSeX Cyberpunk game development situation on their hands.
The prediction poll is split 50/50 right now, that's amazing.
Yes, to keep the momentum.
If a it had improved battery and a slightly bigger screen that's be enough for me to bite.
It really depends on how long they feel the Switch's life cycle is. If they're only halfway through now it makes sense to release a mid-gen refresh. If they plan on releasing the Switch successor in 2023 as some have speculated, it would make more sense to just ride the current models and put the R&D into that instead. I would feel a little burned if I got a Switch "Pro" this year with mildly upgraded features and then the new successor came out in less than 2 years.
The Switch is going to be 4 years old in a month. I'd rather they spend time looking at how to improve the ergonomics, screen, and power on a Switch 2. I am biased though. I bought a 2nd Switch during the pandemic last year and I don't really want a third Switch.
The Wii was super popular for 5 years before falling off a cliff for the next two years and they didn't have a replacement. I feel like the Switch 2 should be announced before sales of the first Switch fall off a cliff.
nah, I don't think there will be a new switch. Nintendo doesn't really need it anyway.
If there is, I may or may not buy it
Hyrule Warriors BoTW and Immortals Fenyx Rising are two games that need a more powerful console. BoTW 2 and other games in the pipeline are built for the new console. Otherwise what is the point of a new Switch if the games are designed for a four year old machine.
Plan B, is that Nintendo will stick with the Switch as a handheld console and let the gap between the Xbox/PS widen.
I don't think there will be any new switch this year. Who knows they may be working on the next DS.
0% chance would be my bet
Mario themed switch in Feb, Monster Hunter themed switch in March. Probably be a Zelda or Pokemon themed switch at some point this year. No need for a switch revision until 2022, which will probably tie in to showcase BOTW2, which I'm predicting will be a March 2022 game heading, into the 5th year since launch.
Even just a new screen that doesn't have such huge bezels and poor colors would be huge.
Compelling software is all that matters. Blockbuster game=sell millions more vanilla+special edition switches. Switch pro would oversaturate their own ecosystem imo
Switch lite for me, I wonder if they will do a revised clamshell design in a few years that would be sweet xxx
The Pro model will only not bee good for the sales of the current one.
Why wonder which one to buy?
If there is only one option there is only one thing to purchase!!!
Honnestly, it should be a switch 2 with full retro and not a swith+. Already 4 years, it is a while for handled market.
I think it's likely we will have an upgrade this year. It's getting harder and harder to port games to Switch, and that process is already not easy. And like it or not, switch cannot live on exclusive alone (we do have some top notch exclusives, yes, itanjisy not enough to keep the momentum imho)
@Mr-Fuggles777
Portable PS5 for £300? What are you smoking?
The world is waiting with fingers crossed on how this vaccine will hold up. So releasing a new console at the moment is madness. Sony and Microsoft had no option because the production wheels were already in motion but Nintendo have had breathing space to hold it off. The machine is ready to go it just needs the green light for production. If anyone was wondering why its hard to get a PS5 or XBox its because both companies are testing the water. People are losing jobs and with lack of income their consoles could flood the 2nd hand market, which means that nobody will buy them brand new. The next 6 to 8 months will be the turning point. Im not that bothered about a new switch at the moment as I have new games to play for at least a year.
@E1000 have you heard of GPD pocket?
Some sort of upgrade would be good. I feel like we're missing out at this point for those of us who have had their Switch since Day One. But wasn't the 'upgrade' fairly recent? The slightly buffed one that came in a slightly different designed box?
1/2
Oh no, this is going to be a long post.
Nintendo have already told us they are working on their next console. They also mentioned it will be state of the art. Now. For those drooling at the prospect of a PS5 home console docked version of Switch (and have a short memory), Nintendo also said the Switch would be state of the art.
And it was.
For it's form factor. It was state of the art. At the time.
Looking at Nintendo's past and trying to find a pattern usually works out well (/s) lol. The New 3DS was an upgrade sure, but the 3DS' success wasn't easy. A pay cut (RIP MR Iwata, you did the CEO thing right!) and an extra thumb nub kinda helped it, but it was probably the XL and models that folk were mostly interested in. The quality of life upgrades. Bigger screen or the more compact, customisable version. Not really the improved spec which a) Nintendo didn't really make a song and dance about and b) didn't really get taken advantage of much.
The Switch lite was introduced as a handheld option (slightly cheaper) and again, some folk might be thinking a home console version would complete a weird holy trinity they made up in their head lol. Again, there is a reason why they made this, and my gut tells me that a billion dollar company who built their success on a foundation of handhelds, were a little nervous their IP might lose it's spirit on a hybrid. Pokemon is a big enough franchise not to chance. So a Lite was a solution to this. A plan B if you will. One which is finding it's own success.
So a home console SKU? Three SKUs for the same console? Makes me laugh thinking about it. It would be such a waste. And show a complete lack of thought other than 'must.make.money.' which unfortunately most Youtubers seem to deconstruct Nintendo's business to. Maybe they play too much XBox? I don't know.
But there are certainly rumblings of new hardware (and let's face it, we aren't going to be playing Switch for the rest of our lives!). So, for my money, Nintendo's next console will be a new console. They have a partnership with NVidia that I'm sure has nurtured some new ideas for gameplay in the old Nintendo R&D department. Gameplay not profits. It might be a hit, it might be a flop, but it won't replace the Switch. A third pillar, if you will (technically second I suppose.) But one thing is for certain, I dare say it will be a hybrid again. That concept needs to be as cemented as handheld and home console. Which is why I guess folk would think it iterative. But that's just perception. But most importantly, it needs to be compatible with Switch. And maybe improve them on this new console (with DLSS or what have you.)
2/2
Not had a 'your message is too long reply before! OMG!!
See, I get that replacing the Switch is commercial suicide. So they shouldn't try. The Switch had perfect timing because it used a more modern APIs which closed the gap from a tech stand point. A new console, with an NVidia partnership and their DLSS software again presents an opportunity that can close the gap between it's rivals. On a freakin' hybrid! Because even though the PS5 and XBox doesn't have AI fidelity (and it might get added later) the new console can be built with it in mind and be much more efficient. (You can already see the mid generation Sony and Microsoft refreshes hahaha! Sony will be wanting to sell us all 8K TVs next year. Jeez, and folk think Nintendo cynical!)
SO Nintendo will release a new console. With it's own 'gimmick' (and get the heck outta my hobby if you think that word is bad!) but will still play Switch games. And like the original DS, will live and die by it's own merits...and hopefully, we will all be wondering why we are still playing Switch. Although, depending on how they name this new console, it might be more perceived as an upgrade. I'm not into marketing (I would have done a worse job than the Wii U!!!) Would it be a Switch 2, or a new name completely? But still associated with Switch because of compatibility. Noooo idea lol! And in the meantime (maybe back end of this year) we will see a Switch revision with quality of life improvements, but certainly not a powerhouse folk are wanting.
Is how I see it. And because I know Nintendo, they are going to do something that belies rhyme and reason and I'll fall in love with the madness lol.
If you read this, I'm not saying I'm right so if it reads like that, it's just my take. And is equally as in the dark as your own hahah. Have a nice day ^^
@AZD1222 i never said anything about £300.
You expect an upgraded Switch to cost less than £450? I surely don't, which is why I would expect it to deliver the same as the consoles in that price range.
You can already buy a new gen console (XsS) for less money than a standard Switch after all.
I foresaw the Switch Lite arriving right from start. In my IMO it was just a matter of time (and most importantly the tech becoming available) before they released it (there are still a lot of handheld lovers out there and in less than one and a half year more than people 14 million have bought the Lite, it is safe to say IMO).
I don't think there will be a Switch Pro/New; Nintendo will have to keep up with PS5/XBOX S X/S. A Pro would not sell enough to warrent any large amount of ports from those. And the base Switch would not be able run any of the PS5/XBOX third parties.
The 'New' 3DS's had stable 3D effect and C-stick as their many selling points. Only a few third party games (2 Monster Hunter and nothing else really) took advantage of the faster processor. And Nintendo released very few exclusives themselves.
No the Switch will get its successor next year or 2023 at the latest; things are going fast these days, when it comes to tech (and the pandemic will cause even more people to become interested in interactive entertainment.)
The Switch successor will be hybrid too, but with some new inventions/gimmicks to; Nintendo don't want to flush out their handheld customers. I will be on par with PS4 Pro tech wise to make it realistic to port some of the PS5/XBOX S X/S stuff (primarily Nintendo favourites like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter etc.).
I feel like the journalists figure if they keep predicting it, they'll be right one of these years.
Honestly, I'd be much more interested in a Switch Lite Pro. Give me my rumble features and full resolution in an undocked system and I'll upgrade in a heartbeat!
Here we go again...
No.
Less than two weeks and the mario Nintendo switch edition comes out.
They are working on a new Nintendo console which will come out in the next two years
Depends on the new features but probably 2022
2021 is "Pro-mising" for a Switch Pro announcement, unless we don't get it, in which case the year is "Pro-missing."
Nintendo loves to make shots from downtown, so you just never know!
I feel like the plan was to release one in March of 2021, bit COVID put a wrench in production time frames. As this is also affecting Sony & Microsoft, they figure they can wait until late 2021 or March 2022. Sales of the vanilla Switches are amazing. Might as well wait for the cost of production go down a bit.
@Dr_Corndog Good one
Funny how the poll shows that if they do release a new Switch people will buy it, Nintendo fans really have deep pockets no wonder why they release $90 games and they think it’s a discount
0%. and i really don't need a new switch for now. i have it from day 1 and still looks like a new baby. then i hate western games with real graphic. i love japanese games and they don't need a super power
They don’t need to. The Switch is only 4 years old. I know Microsoft & Sony have 4K Consoles, and the BOTW 4K Video looked stunning, but Nintendo aren’t about trying to compete technically, they prefer to innovate.
They should let the current model keep selling like hot cakes & put all their focus on the next gen Console.
I know Microsoft released the Xbox One X, but that came out a year before the Series S & X, so if Nintendo WERE to release a more powerful Switch this year, then it would be stupid to release the next Gen Console until at least 2023 unless it was Backwards Compatible.
Stop. Just... stop.
I think a new Switch will launch with BotW 2 of which I think Nintendo aimed for a holiday 2021 BotW 2 release but the pandemic delays it to around March 2022. Unlike Microsoft, I think Nintendo understands the importance of launching new hardware alongside a strong software lineup (Series X|S should really have been delayed to holiday 2021 with Halo Infinite and Flight Sim being launch titles).
@Mr-Fuggles777
I am talking about it being a portable device. Also do you honestly think Nintendo is going target “hardcore gamers” and away from their previous target audience at pricing their product at £499?
@AZD1222 so if they are not targeting the more "hard-core" gamers and the more "casual" crowd arr still lapping up the original switch who is Nintendo looking to target with upgraded hardware?
Nobody will get a Switch Pro, this year or next. Not for MSRP anyway. Scalpers will be ready.
Dudes and dudettes, we've been having this "new Switch" speculation since roughly four minutes after the Switch launched. Can't we just let it be? It's as if there isn't a TREMENDOUS library of Nintendo games to feature and bring attention to instead of feeding into this endless speculation cycle.
@Octorok385 Gah, I typed paragraphs on this...and you summed it up in one! You win this debate
I'm pretty sure that Nintendo will release this new version this year, but I think it won't be as powerful as many people hope. I think Nintendo isn't thinking about "next gen switch" for this year, only a upgrade. The main goal is to get closer to stable 720p (portable) and 1080p (native in the dock) with the same "standard mode" of the original/lite Switch and may be some new features in the system. Here what I think
The SoC should be "the same", higher clocks and more power efficient, but that's it.
The memory (with higher clocks) may gain some gigas to handle with more features in the system (or even more textures for docking mode)
The Screen should be the same resolution, but with a higher quality
The Storage should double (at least). I would love NVMe support instead of MicroSD for expansion, but I doubt it.
The dock may have a Upscaling tecnology
All upcoming games should work in portable/dock with the new system and the regular one (and the lite, of course) and Nintendo NEED to garantee this for all first party games. But if I was Nintendo, I would let thirdies to put some games only in the new system. This could be useful for some multiplatform ports.
I upgraded to the Lite & I'm very happy with it.... It seems likely the next upgrade would target TV performance more, so I wouldn't want that myself but I know plenty do play games that way
@BruceCM Yes it does seem like its more for TV performance than anything. Which makes me wonder if it would be a simple dock update, and an updated screen on the switch unit itself.
You forgot the question, "What are the odds that this topic will come up every 2-3 months until Nintendo releases an updated Switch/replacement for the Switch?"
I've ordered the Monster Hunter edition, which to me all but guarantees there'll be a significant upgrade right around the corner - it's sod's law.
Put this way the most interview he never explicated said NO instead muddy the waters instead. I read this on another site interview so they never said never. So unless they put out PressRelease infatuating stating No Switch v3.0 then I'll believe that but then. Also I read vague statements means nothing unless PressRelease states no v3 Switch.
Higher than the chance of games coming out, that's for sure.
@Darknyht More like every 2-3 days. Why don't they just say 'we aren't happy with the Switch'.
March 2022 release - bookmark and quote me.
You never know with Nintendo.
Let’s face it, nobody here knows. Anyone who claims they know is lying. My own personal guess is they’ll release an iteration that isn’t actually a huge power leap but sorts some other stuff but it’s just a guess.
Why would they release it this year? Unless the big sales stops, theres no need yet.
Regular consumers are happy with it.
I bet that 2022 is the year of the SwitchU
Since the Nintendo slowdown & pandemic, I no longer put expectations on things. I imagine many people with launch day switches probably need batteries replaced, because of Li-ion battery degradation, or want to replace their console rather than the battery.
New switch model? yeah probably.
the stupid "Pro" rumor? No.
Honestly ... I am playing Skyforge the last two days and it just runs and looks horrible. Anything that makes it easier for Devs to at least port over older games in a proper way is welcome. I don't need the next gen games. But I wish we could at least have last gen without all the problems we have right now.
I'm surprised that there are that many people who think the Pro isn't happening.
I guess the more whom are surprised, the merrier...
This is about 50/50 on a Gamer website. I can only imagine how lopsided these numbers would be for casual consumers. The Christmas holiday was not even 2 months prior, and Nintendo would have a lot of pissed off brand new consumers.
Look, I just don't see this happening this year... or next year lol.
Guys, the Switch is on pace to outsell the Wii. That's not an easy task. Furthermore, nobody predicted this (especially after the disappointing sales of the WiiU). The Switch Lite only happened because it is cheaper. That's all, it really is that simple. This Gen's Killer Apps are Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. Nothing else has come close. There's no reason to upgrade mid-gen. Nintendo doesn't care about competing with Microsoft or Sony. Frankly, they've been proven to perform better when they don't. Third party developers care much more about install base than raw power, imo.
Lastly, Nintendo should nurture and grow this base: Fix the damn joy-con issue, improve the NSO features, and keep delivering on first party software.
Switch 2... Probably Holiday 2023, would be my guess.
New Nintendo SwitcharU!
How does that sound?
Nah. Breath of the Wild 2 and Prime 4 (lol) are confirmed for the basic Switch, so you'll need a different launch title. I recommend Star Fox Grand Prix.
Yeah, they need to quit pre-pending ‘New’ with their updated products. Internet searches for ‘Used New 3DS’ brings all kinds of mixed results.
Or a search for ‘New 3DS grips’ will return search results for 3DS grips that are new (and the wrong size).
I know. First World problems.
@Euler botw played on wii u. That didn’t mean it didn’t run better on switch. Same with botw 2. It’ll play on regular switch at 720p and pro or new switch at 1080p
Hey, didn’t we already get a new fortnite switch and a new Mario switch? My guesses are until it dies out, 2022 in my guess, or at least late December of 2021 if it does.
Things i know for certain:
1) Nintendo is treating the switch as a portable console, and Reggie recently told us why, so assuming a new refresh won't happen just because it is on pace to outsell the Wii doesn't make sense.
The OG model looks old and NEEDS to solve joycon drifts before it becomes a serious problem for Nintendo.
Apparently joycon drifting cannot be solved without a redesign OR has already been solved with a new design we don't know anything about, otherwise I'm pretty sure it would be solved by now.
You make a console refresh for the same price and put to sleep the original, so you continue to have a cheaper switch that doesn't switch and a refined normal one.
Classic portable console scheme by Nintendo.
(Unless they go the "switch that doesn't switch because it stays at home" route, which is counterintuitive but 🤷🏻♂️)
2) I'm not an analyst, but it's safe to say, as other journalists said, that COVID helped sales. So COVID is an unstable variable for Nintendo, as they were forced to reallocate and boost a production that could halt if the virus doesn't mutate much and we get to go out freely by the end of the year. Many videogame journalists are assuming that once this madness ends, the "game bubble" so to speak will decline. Seems logical. Or it could get worse. Who knows? WHO doesn't, so Nintendo is in uncharted waters. They could just wait and see what happens.
Who knows.
3) a revision comes to the market with a big game, a system seller.
On the list of the games we already know to be in development, the one that's likely to explode in sales is Breath of the wild 2.
Is the game ready? Has it gone gold?
Nobody knows, but Aonuma had plenty of time.
My bet is that at this point BOTW2 and a hardware revision are bound to come out together, so if the hardware sees a delay for covid, so will the game.
I think something, whether it is a revision along the lines of a New 3DS or a brand new console, is at some point in the development process, but I doubt it is ready for release, or even announcement any time soon.
Can we start calling it the Switch Deluxe? Would make me happy, the Switch line acknowledging its Wii U heritage.
Honestly, the Switch Pro is like Brexit or Covid-19. It’s inevitable, we have no idea how long it will take and no one can stop talking about it. We don’t need a Switch Pro right about now, we need some good games. Titles like Luigi’s Mansion show the graphical prowess of the switch. Nintendo have now sold 80million consoles. When will we get games designed for Switch and not underpowered ports. It isn’t the Wii, Switch is a gamers console, not a gimmicky toy.
Why do you keep going on about this?
nintendo alrdy stated theres no new models coming out anytime soon since were only a few years away from switch 2.
S*#T man, they haven't even release the games they promised for the original yet....
Release:
MP4
Bayo 3
New Zelda...
then we'll talk.
Good to finally see someone make a correct reference about a "new Switch", not a "Switch Pro". A "Pro" is a radical concept where a seriously beefed model up sells beside a base model for a premium price, whereas a new model or an upgrade is a successor to an existing model and replaces like it (like New 3DS did to 3DS). Nintendo never have or will do a Pro concept, and the only reason we saw it during the PS4/XBO era was the sudden proliferation of 4K and HDR early in their cycle.
I can't see a Switch successor at all in 2021. The Switch still sells like crazy and it's only just gone past its fourth birthday. Console cycles last near 7 years now, and while the Switch shows signs of age, 4 years is too soon. I'd bet any new Switch won't be until March or May in 2022, and expect blockbuster games on launch like Zelda BOTW2 and Mario Kart 9. The fact major software announcements have dried up, it seems Nintendo are pausing to launch something big. If so, perhaps late this year is a chance.
For those still bleeding about a "Pro" model, sorry, we're too late in the cycle. Any new Switch will be a successor, albeit, let's hope it's backwards compatible with all accessories so buying the base console is an option for a cheap upgrade.
I can’t really see what a Switch Pro would offer that would be a must-have feature. It’ll probably have to be roughly the same size anyways to be compatible with the dock and joy cons. If it’s not compatible, that’ll just be another headache for people.
The Switch is still doing amazing in sales, even with the next gen consoles out in the wild. I've concluded that most new gamers, or younger gamers, don't care a lick about graphics. They just want a device where they play Fortnite, Minecraft and Roblox, and adults want a device where they can play Animal Crossing. Graphics really don't matter that much to many gamers anymore. The hybrid portability, with the Nintendo exclusives, really make the Switch a different beast from Sony and Microsoft. As long as Nintendo makes the next Switch fully compatible with the "old" Switch, and more of a continuation rather than a new system, Nintendo could have an iPhone on their hands, where you update it every 4-6 years.
Probably going to be a switch pro in 2022 with BOTW 2 I want BOTW2 now.
I would buy one with a better batter, Bluetooth, slightly faster processor, bigger and better screen. Otherwise I will get the series x and then a Ps5.
The Switch Deluxe will come out when BOTW 2 comes out later this year!
What are the chances we'll see a formal Nintendo Direct?
I believe this will happen for no reason other than Nintendo seems to be holding all new releases until further notice. The only major brand new AAA games we’ve gotten in the last 10 months are Animal Crossing and Mario Kart Live. Clearly they’re holding back a lot of new releases for something. Personally, I think it’s a bit of a slap in the face to fans to intentionally delay releases, but I lived through the Wii U era so nothing will surprise me.
It doesn’t have to be a new model to drive sales. Nintendo has a history of putting out new models to correct design flaws in their original product.
4 years later though and we’ve still no new joycons.
@Averagewriter Agree. My one wish for an "New Switch" would be Lite body, perhaps a better, slightly bigger screen BUT it can link to the TV via a cable.
That's it, perfect for me!
And so, the constant battle of wanting a "Super Switch" continues. I'd rather we take it one step at a time and wait for the Joy Cons fixed first. I feel like it's a more pressing issue than minor performance problems within certain 1st-party games, like Age of Calamity.
However, I'm inclined to believe that Age of Calamity had every reason to run better as good as Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition on the regular Switch. It seems too inexcuseable to warrant a reason to get a "Super Switch" and this applies to other 1st-party titles.
@Crono1973 I am happy for the most part. I was a huge fan of the Wii U, so the number of ports annoys me but there enough other stuff that I haven’t lacked for games. After chasing the latest and greatest since the PlayStation first launched (everything before that my parents bought going back to Intellivision), I am trying to learn to slow down and avoid the hype/envy machine.
I managed to stick with the WiiU until 2019 and my goal is to do the same with the Switch. So a “New Switch XL” might be completely missed by me unless they actually fix Joy-Con drift on it or make the Joy-Cons better fit my giant hands.
A model that can deliver 1080p/60 fps and 720p/60fps on mobile? Yes!
@GTHOLLAND I think it's more because scalpers buy up all the stock before others can get their hands on one
Great article.
Cuts through the BS speculation and builds upon the facts and likely scenarios for both arguments, bravo.
@Mr-Fuggles777 You seem to continue to miss my point. Do you honestly think Nintendo can make a PORTABLE device as powerful as PS5 and make it cost less than £1000?
I wouldn't run out and buy one day one, bht whenever my Switch starts to go kaput, I'd like to be able to buy an upgraded version of some sort. Nothing crazy, just a little beefier, some of the kinks ironed out
@TheFrenchiestFry i agree with the first part of your comment.
however, in regards to making games only compatible with the hardware revision, I also would expect that not to happen. but i didn't expect them make games only compatible with the New 3ds consoles as well, and they did that.
@1ofUs The ps5s technology isn’t 100 times better than the switch docked.
I think it depends if BotW 2 is going to be ready for Christmas. If it isn't then the new version of the Switch will be pushed back. I also wouldn't be surprised if Metroid Prime 4 is a key factor in new Switch hardware as well.
@AZD1222 No I don't, and it looks like you miss my point.
If the next switch isn't on Par with current gen tech then we will still miss out on 3rd part multiplatform releases.
The switch is perfectly capable of banging out amazing games designed for the hardware, look at this year's line up - MHRise, BD2, SMT5 etc.
Everyone keeps saying about BotW2 needing more power but the original was built with the Wii-U architecture in mind
@Incoherent1 They are not actively holding new releases. Stuff like Paper Mario, Age of Calamity, 3D world remaster kept getting announced and then out.
People keep forgetting that Nintendo workforce is really small compared to the biggest names in gaming, even when counting partners studios. Add the coronavirus to this (with reportedly, Japanese work environnement - especially in gaming - were not ready for homeworking at all) and the truth is, more likely than anything, that nothing is actually ready
I have a few thoughts on the matter.
I don't think a new model is on the way, given the record breaking sales and recent statements by Nintendo. But they've lied to us before and of course Nintendo is gonna say no if questioned by some rando journalist, it would pretty bad business practice to announce a new SKU in an interview with The Verge or something.
If there is a new model, I don't think I'd buy it, but that's more of a cost issue than anything. It would probably be close to $500 CAD before taxes and that's something I simply cannot afford. If it's TV-only for the sake of power like a lot of people seem to be clamouring for, that's an instant no from me anyway. I play in handheld mode almost exclusively, so no portable functionality is a total deal breaker.
@Timtomclap thats why i still have a switch.
Nintendo did not say they don't want to bring a better Switch to the market. They said a) they want to keep the form factor (which doesn't mean, a next switch can't be better), and b) they don't PLAN to ANNOUNCE anything anytime soon (with "soon" meaning nothing, as per usual in the business).
I think, we will see something new at the end of this year. A Switch that has an OLED display, capable of 1080p, with smaller bezels. And yes, the difference between a 720p and 1080p is clearly visible - even on such small devices. You either never had the chance to compare, or you honestly need glasses if you think otherwise ... The SoC will only be so powerful to be able to fuel this new display. Meaning it will push games closer to 1080p 30 FPS in handheld mode, and in some cases stabilize them exactly there. The SoC will also be more power efficient. This combined with a slightly better battery, will lead to approx. the same running times, maybe even a little bit more. DLSS would be a thinkable killer feature - one can dream.
The 4k everyone is talking about only really makes any sense inside a new dock. There will be an extra chip that takes over as soon as the Switch is in docked mode. I don't think it will have much power overall, but will blow up the resolution to 4k (maybe 60 FPS). No improved drawing distance, reduced pop in, better shadows or some such. Might even be compatible to the current Switch. Other than that, I think, Nintendo will finally give us proper Bluetooth support, to connect our wireless headsets to the Switch.
All of the above doesn't make the current switch obsolete. It just opens up a new segment. You have the budget friendly Switch Lite, the normal Switch in the middle and a more expensive enthusiast Switch on the top.
I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
I think it's as likely as not at present, to be honest. Let's also be clear that no matter when they'd announce/release any new version, there's probably be some disappointed customers who has just bought the old one.
I'm also holding off on hunting for a PS5 at the moment (not that finding one of those is an easy task at present) whole I await more potential news on a new Switch...which might not come. I can't be the only one, surely. If they wait too long and then announce release though, I'd imagine lots of people well have decided to buy the latest consoles from Sony or Microsoft.
@Dr_Corndog
I was searching for "missing" on the page to see if anybody had already used this joke.
@gergelyv I did the same thing before I used it, haha.
@Bizaster "Guys, I don't need a Switch Pro. Calm down lmao"
There, ... fixed that for you. Don't mention it.
I'm in college sooooo ... 1.5 years before I'm able to afford a new switch. Sadly. So I'm happy with what I have.
But if it came out soon I'd totally try to buy it.
@Bizaster
Tell this kid you need any kind of Switch, or electric windows in cars, or an aircon. It's almost as if different circumstances in life lead to different needs and longings. That was really weak, you see?
Hard truth is: a) for us, it's almost never about things we need, but things we want, and b) you don't speak for everyone in regards to a Switch Pro. In fact, you never speak for everyone else. I'm sorry.
